Introducing Sedimentology
Sediments and sedimentary rocks are fundamental to our understanding of the Earth and the array of environments that characterise its surface. Since some 70% of the rocks on the Earth's surface are sedimentary in origin and sediments are of great economic importance, there is a very good chance that we encounter a sedimentary rock or an associated sedimentary process at some point every day of our lives. Introducing Sedimentology covers all the rudimentary aspects of sedimentology including different types of sedimentary rocks, sedimentary structures, and environments of deposition of sediments. The application of sedimentology in the search for valuable economic resources is explained and how sedimentary rocks play a key role for subsurface storage of carbon dioxide and hydrogen as part of the low-carbon energy transition. Written for students, amateur enthusiasts and professional geologists, Introducing Sedimentology provides a succinct and accessible introduction to the science of sedimentology. It is generously illustrated with many explanatory line diagrams and colour photographs.
Modeling for Sustainable Management in Agriculture, Food and the Environment
Recent developments in computer science, data mining and big data analytics have resulted in new operational frameworks in agriculture, food and the environment, which in fact, share a strong link between them. A key challenge for researchers is to extract new data patterns and utilize them in decision making. Managers, policy makers, and practitioners have to be aware of these methodologies in order to establish efficient and effective working groups for the tasks to be resolved. The book reviews the complexity of the interrelationship between agriculture, food production and processing, and environmental issues. It also highlights the prospects of modeling in various cases of problem solving in these sectors, and reviews the new and future challenges. Consumer awareness in food production and processing practices is continually increasing and the necessity for advanced behavioural tools follows the same trend. Furthermore, the value chain management challenge is becoming one of the most crucial tasks due to the increased importance of new parameters like the origin of products, its environmental footprint and the enhancement of local production, etc. The book addresses these topics in a holistic approach, merging modeling with advanced marketing practices in a coherent and innovative manner, being an effective tool in a continuously demanding world.

Improvement of Forest Ecosystem Functions in Karst Desertification Control
In the past 20 years, karst desertification control has produced remarkable results, and the South China karst has been a global hotspot for greening. However, in the new stage of karst desertification control, the functional lag of forest ecosystems and the insufficient supply capacity of ecosystem services are gradually becoming prominent. We not only lack systematic research on vulnerability and resilience, structure and stability, ecological assets and services, carrying capacity and ecological security, and service trade-offs/synergies and optimization in controlled ecosystems. There is still a lack of research on the ecological processes of newly constructed forests in improving ecosystem functions and services. Therefore, this reprint mainly focuses on the research improvement of forest ecosystem functions in karst desertification control. This includes the improvement mechanism of ecosystem structure, function, and services, the mechanism of ecosystem service tradeoff/synergy, and function optimization. An optimization model of ecosystem function and an improvement path for eco-product supply are introduced. The role of functional traits in the maintenance of ecological function and services is also established, and social-ecological responses to afforestation in karst desertification control are discussed.

The Dialectics of Ecology
Explores ecological socialism's potential against capitalist environmental degradation Today the fate of the earth as a home for humanity is in question-and yet, contends John Bellamy Foster, the reunification of humanity and the earth remains possible if we are prepared to make revolutionary changes. As with his prior books, The Dialectics of Ecology is grounded in the contention that we are now faced with a concrete choice between ecological socialism and capitalist exterminism, and rooted in insights drawn from the classical historical materialist tradition. In this latest work, Foster explores the complex theoretical debates that have arisen historically with respect to the dialectics of nature and society. He then goes on to examine the current contradictions associated with the confrontation between capitalist extractivism and the financialization of nature, on the one hand, and the radical challenges to these represented by emergent visions of ecological civilization and planned degrowth, on the other. The product of contemporary ecosocialist debates, The Dialectics of Ecology builds on earlier works by Foster, including Marx's Ecology and The Return of Nature, aimed at the development of a dialectical naturalism and the formation of a path to sustainable human development.

Beaver Girl
Praise for Beaver Girl"Clever, soulful, and charming!"-Ben Goldfarb"This book is the antidote we need in the face of climate change!"-Mary Alice Monroe"Beaver Girl is the novel 'beaver believers' have been waiting for."-Alison Zak"This is a book that I could easily read for fun or assign in one of the science classes I teach as an example of communicating science through story."-Emily Fairfax"Vivid and endearing!"-Midge Raymond"Both sobering and hopeful, Beaver Girl is a story for our times."-Frances Backhouse"There is no better time for this beautiful book."-Kate Hopper"A gripping read that explores survival and care."-Julie R. Enszer"This book is essential for our time."-Amanda K. JarosThe main character of Beaver Girl is Livia, a 19-year-old girl who has been through a pandemic and climate collapse. She wakes in her house to wildfires that are encroaching upon her neighborhood, and she goes into a nearby forest, Congaree National Park, to try to escape the wildfires. There she befriends a beaver family. The reader learns about beavers as a keystone species for our environment. For example, most of Texas and New Mexico, which we think of as desert areas now, were lush green forests before the Europeans got rid of all the beavers for the fur trade. Beavers create these wetland areas, and even after an individual family has moved on those beaver ponds become part of the water table, which can help us during times of drought in later years. The novel has elements of a morality tale that shows what we have done to help bring about climate disaster. It is also set in a post-apocalyptic time and shows what beavers and humans could do together to restore faith and strength and a sense of family and community.

Low Carbon Water Treatment and Energy Recovery
Climate change caused by excess carbon dioxide emissions is a global challenge. For the water industry, the water treatment process is responsible for the majority of the industry's carbon emissions. The water industry exacerbates global warming, and this means that innovative wastewater treatments that emit less or no carbon dioxide are significant. Recently, carbon neutrality has become a crucial issue for the water treatment industry worldwide. To reduce carbon emissions from water treatment, technological and scientific innovation is required, such as biomass production, the use of bubble-less-gas mass-transfer bioreactors, reduced aeration with enhanced microbial processes, high-efficiency pumps and blowers, low-pressure self-cleaning free membranes, and the integration of solar power and bioelectrical systems. Considering the present technology for water and wastewater treatment, there is significant scope for improvement in these areas. In this context, this Special Issue aimed to collate the latest advancements in innovative technologies for low-carbon water treatment and energy recovery.
Solving the Climate Puzzle
Climate change is the most important scientific issue of our time, catalyzing a profound societal shift based on our perceived understanding of it. While many books explain what we already know about climate change, this book explores what we admit we do not understand about it. In doing so, it reveals a previously overlooked mechanism of climate change, one that operates in the background and eludes the scrutiny of prevailing climate theories and models. Astonishingly, this phenomenon is clearly evident in numerous climate studies, casting a new light on climate change that warrants a critical reevaluation of many of the conclusions presented in the IPCC Assessment Reports.Regardless of your position on climate change or your familiarity with the underlying science, this book offers a wealth of knowledge and a profound shift in your understanding of the dynamics that govern climate variability. With 134 illustrations (black and white in the paperback edition), this book aims to make climate science accessible to a broad audience, and only you, the reader, can ultimately determine the extent to which it succeeds in this goal.
