Groundnut, Arachis hypogea Linnaeus is an important oil seed crop which is native to South America.It is also known for its high-oil edible seeds which are thus the fourth most important source of edible oil in the world. It is the third largest source of vegetable protein.Groundnut oil is edible and therefore, it is extensively used as a cooking medium both as refined oil and vanaspati ghee. More than 100 species of insects that infest stored groundnuts are reported in documents. Approximately 6 to 10% of groundnut kernels are destroyed by insect pests stored in bag.C. cephalonia popularly known as the "Rice meal moth" or the Flour moth belongs to the family Pyralidae and order Lepidoptera.The rice moth, C.cephalonica causes not only sanitation problem in warehouses but also hinders the commodities qualitatively and quantitatively. The creamy white larva starts feeding on the grains immediately after hatching. The larva damages the stored food by moving, feeding and leaving silken threads which later form dense and tough webbing.Pupation takes place either within the food source, in sacking or in crack-crevices in storage structures. The life cycle of rice moth takes around 4 days.

Sunflower

Sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) is a photo insensitive, highly cross pollinated crop due to protandrus condition of stamens, and pollination by honey bees. The principal states of sunflower cultivation in India are Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which are regarded as traditional areas. Sunflower has the potential to be introduced on a large scale during rainfed kharif and rabi, summer under irrigation in most of the states. Wide genetic variation is required in breeding for major agronomically important traits like seed yield, oil yield and composition, flowering behavior, disease resistance. Plant breeding programs need such genetic variation to be able to combine positive traits from different parents to provide the required profitable and sustainable sunflower hybrids of the future. Enhancing the oil yield is the ultimate goal of any sunflower improvement programme. However, being poly-genetically controlled trait, selection based on yield alone is not effective. Genetic variation in traits of sunflower can be gainfully exploited in a crop improvement program, particularly for selection of elite germplasm having more oil content, seed and oil yield.

Pozzolanicity Enhancement in Sugarcane Bagasse Ash

In the present study, the agro-industrial waste sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) was identified as a principal raw material and utilized to develop the sustainable and energy efficient construction products. Many of the previous research studies have been optimized the SCBA content (i.e. partial cement replacement) in concrete production. The reviewed optimum replacement range of SCBA showed a large variation. Such a wide range of optimization is due to the variation in physico-chemical attributes of SCBA collected from different industry sources such as its source (origin), silica content, loss on ignition value, its combustion temperature & duration, and cooling temperature & duration. It reflects the need to investigate the true optimum content of SCBA in concrete production. The study shows significant potential and scope for utilizing the agro-industrial solid waste i.e. SCBA for the development of building construction material that is lighter in weight, durable, thermally insulated, non hazardous, energy efficient and sustainable.

Physical Impacts of 2020 Labor Day Wildfires to Oregon Highways

Wildfires can be destructive to highway infrastructure. Despite the substantial number of wildfires experienced every year, research on the physical impacts of wildfire on highways has been understudied. This research examines historical highway physical damage from wildfires. To accomplish our research objectives, this research suggests a way to categorize the physical damage caused by these wildfires to roads by using carefully selected statistics gathered from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). As a result, the dataset in this study has been classified to represent physical, roadway, and traffic impacts. The physical characteristics on the highways researched during the 2020 Oregon Labor Day wildfires (Riverside, Beachie Creek, Lionshead, Holiday Farm and Archie Creek) indicated about 56% of the highways were affected. The roadway impacts, which included damage from hazard trees, damage to various structures - guardrail, signs, and delineators as well as bridges, slope/rock scaling damage and pavement destruction - averaged 39% for the highways, while the four of eight arterial highway routes studied in the Oregon Cascades saw a 14% reduction in annual average daily traffic (AADT). These results can be used to assist engineers, maintenance personnel, and emergency personnel as they strive to assess physical damage to highways from wildfires and serve as a baseline for measuring and assessing potential future wildfire highway impacts.

Tens of thousands of natural products have been identified from plants and hundreds of thousands are yet to be isolated and screened for their bioactivities. This large reservoir of organic chemicals is largely untapped or under-tapped for use as pesticides. In this chapter the traditional applications of native plants as pesticidal agents and the results of biological and chemical studies on these plants in the past few decades are examined with a view to assessing their potential use in agriculture and related fields. The factors influencing efficacy, the advantages of and problems associated with the use of plant-based pesticidal products are also discussed. The pesticidal agents that will be dealt with will include insecticides (insect killers including adults, ova, and larvae) insect repellents, antifeedants, molluscicides, fungicides and phytotoxins (herbicides). It must however be stated at this stage that although much work has been done in the past decades to show that indeed plants have the potentials to provide alternative and safe pesticides to replace the synthetic ones not enough work has been done in the area of identifying the active components.

Substrate Influence on Growth and Spawn Quality of Oyster Mushroom

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) are popular edible fungi grown around the world. They are known for their good nutrition, economic value, and ability to grow on many types of organic waste. To get good yields, high-quality spawn is very important.In this study, we tested five types of grains-sorghum, wheat, barley, paddy, and millet-to see which one supports the best mycelial growth during spawn production. We measured how far the mycelium grew in each substrate over 20 days.The results showed that sorghum gave the best growth, reaching 5.69 cm. Wheat was close at 5.24 cm, and barley followed with 4.98 cm. Paddy showed slower growth at 4.27 cm, and millet was the lowest at 2.77 cm. The differences were significant.Sorghum worked best likely because it has good nutrients, holds moisture well, and allows air to flow, helping the mycelium grow faster. Wheat and barley also did well, but may need small changes to match sorghum's results. Paddy and millet were less effective and may need improvement before use.In conclusion, sorghum is the best grain for spawn production and can help farmers get better yields and healthier mushroom crops.
