Plant Extracts and Insect Pests
Tens of thousands of natural products have been identified from plants and hundreds of thousands are yet to be isolated and screened for their bioactivities. This large reservoir of organic chemicals is largely untapped or under-tapped for use as pesticides. In this chapter the traditional applications of native plants as pesticidal agents and the results of biological and chemical studies on these plants in the past few decades are examined with a view to assessing their potential use in agriculture and related fields. The factors influencing efficacy, the advantages of and problems associated with the use of plant-based pesticidal products are also discussed. The pesticidal agents that will be dealt with will include insecticides (insect killers including adults, ova, and larvae) insect repellents, antifeedants, molluscicides, fungicides and phytotoxins (herbicides). It must however be stated at this stage that although much work has been done in the past decades to show that indeed plants have the potentials to provide alternative and safe pesticides to replace the synthetic ones not enough work has been done in the area of identifying the active components.
Sunflower
Sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) is a photo insensitive, highly cross pollinated crop due to protandrus condition of stamens, and pollination by honey bees. The principal states of sunflower cultivation in India are Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which are regarded as traditional areas. Sunflower has the potential to be introduced on a large scale during rainfed kharif and rabi, summer under irrigation in most of the states. Wide genetic variation is required in breeding for major agronomically important traits like seed yield, oil yield and composition, flowering behavior, disease resistance. Plant breeding programs need such genetic variation to be able to combine positive traits from different parents to provide the required profitable and sustainable sunflower hybrids of the future. Enhancing the oil yield is the ultimate goal of any sunflower improvement programme. However, being poly-genetically controlled trait, selection based on yield alone is not effective. Genetic variation in traits of sunflower can be gainfully exploited in a crop improvement program, particularly for selection of elite germplasm having more oil content, seed and oil yield.
Varietal Susceptibility and Evaluation of Grainprotectants
This book presents research on effective strategies to safeguard mung bean grains against Callosobruchus chinensis during storage. Conducted at B.A. College of Agriculture, AAU, Anand, the study identifies resistant mung bean varieties and evaluates the efficacy of plant oils, botanical powders, and synthetic insecticides as grain protectants. Treatments with neem oil, castor oil, and neem leaf powder significantly reduced pest damage while preserving seed quality and germination. Among insecticides, deltamethrin and cypermethrin emerged as the most effective. These findings offer practical, safe, and sustainable solutions for protecting stored mung beans.
Agricultural Extension Services
This study investigates how access to agricultural extension services affects maize yields among smallholder farmers in Malawi. It uses data from the fifth round of the Integrated Household Survey (IHS 5), a nationally representative cross-sectional dataset. The research focuses on understanding how agricultural extension services contribute to improving maize productivity and identifying other factors that influence this relationship. The study uses regression analysis, with maize yield as the main variable of interest. The analysis also includes factors such as farm size, education level of the household head, household size, gender of the household head, market access, fertilizer quantity, residence, and exposure to shocks.
Substrate Influence on Growth and Spawn Quality of Oyster Mushroom
Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) are popular edible fungi grown around the world. They are known for their good nutrition, economic value, and ability to grow on many types of organic waste. To get good yields, high-quality spawn is very important.In this study, we tested five types of grains-sorghum, wheat, barley, paddy, and millet-to see which one supports the best mycelial growth during spawn production. We measured how far the mycelium grew in each substrate over 20 days.The results showed that sorghum gave the best growth, reaching 5.69 cm. Wheat was close at 5.24 cm, and barley followed with 4.98 cm. Paddy showed slower growth at 4.27 cm, and millet was the lowest at 2.77 cm. The differences were significant.Sorghum worked best likely because it has good nutrients, holds moisture well, and allows air to flow, helping the mycelium grow faster. Wheat and barley also did well, but may need small changes to match sorghum's results. Paddy and millet were less effective and may need improvement before use.In conclusion, sorghum is the best grain for spawn production and can help farmers get better yields and healthier mushroom crops.
Physical Impacts of 2020 Labor Day Wildfires to Oregon Highways
Wildfires can be destructive to highway infrastructure. Despite the substantial number of wildfires experienced every year, research on the physical impacts of wildfire on highways has been understudied. This research examines historical highway physical damage from wildfires. To accomplish our research objectives, this research suggests a way to categorize the physical damage caused by these wildfires to roads by using carefully selected statistics gathered from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). As a result, the dataset in this study has been classified to represent physical, roadway, and traffic impacts. The physical characteristics on the highways researched during the 2020 Oregon Labor Day wildfires (Riverside, Beachie Creek, Lionshead, Holiday Farm and Archie Creek) indicated about 56% of the highways were affected. The roadway impacts, which included damage from hazard trees, damage to various structures - guardrail, signs, and delineators as well as bridges, slope/rock scaling damage and pavement destruction - averaged 39% for the highways, while the four of eight arterial highway routes studied in the Oregon Cascades saw a 14% reduction in annual average daily traffic (AADT). These results can be used to assist engineers, maintenance personnel, and emergency personnel as they strive to assess physical damage to highways from wildfires and serve as a baseline for measuring and assessing potential future wildfire highway impacts.

The Thesis Book M.Sc. (2018-20) examines the adoption potential of two innovative livelihood technologies like Kadaknath poultry farming and oyster mushroom production in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. To assess the likelihood and extent of technology uptake, the ADOPT (Adoption Diffusion Outcome Prediction Tool) model was used. A total of 120 stakeholders (60 per technology) were selected, including researchers, progressive farmers, business personnel, and self-help groups, who were directly engaged in the FLD process. The model provided projections on adoption percentage and time required to reach peak adoption levels, based on various influencing variables.
Biopesticides
Biopesticides are certain types of pesticides derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals. Biopesticide is comparatively safer strategy than the use of chemicals or chemical derived pesticides posing low risks to humans and the environment. The major advantage of the use of biopesticide for crop pest's management is environment safety along with their host specificity. Besides, the associated costs for the development and the registration of the biopesticide are comparatively lesser than that of the chemical pesticides. Besides, due to the continuous evolution of the resistance to chemicals and legislations being more restrictive, there is a need for intensive research on the biopesticide development both from the private and the public sectors.

Entomopathogenic Fungi and its Biological Control
Entomopathogenic fungi are considered as essential natural regulators in population of different insects. These fungi have potential as mycoinsecticide agents alongside different agricultural insect pests. The mode of actions of these fungi mainly cause infection in body of their host through cuticle penetration, acquisition entrance to the host hemolymph, production of toxins, and grow by consuming nutrients which are existing in the hemocoel to avoid immune responses in insects. A total of 1600 different types of viruses are involved in the infection of 1100 different species of insects and mites. The fungi produce spores which infect their host by germinating on its surface and then growing into its body. Death takes between 4 and 10 days, depending on the type of fungus and the number of infecting spores. After death, the fungus produces thousands of new spores on the dead body, which disperse and continue their life cycle on new hosts. There are two main taxonomic orders of entomopathogenic fungi. These fungi often cause natural epizootics in insect and mite populations.
Precision Nutrient Management for Sustainable Crop Production
Fertilizer consumption in India has observed a phenomenal increase over the past four decades. India has attained self-sufficiency in food grain production, primarily due to increase in fertilizer use. The important reasons for low and declining crop responses to fertilizer nutrients include continuous nutrient mining from the soil due to imbalanced nutrient use (6.1:2.5:1 NPK) leading to serious soil degradation qualitatively. This resulted in wastage of fertilizers and low NUE. Nutrient management is a major component of a soil and crop management system. Knowing the required nutrients for all stages of growth and understanding the soil's ability to supply those needed nutrients is critical to profitable crop production. Precision nutrient management is an approach of feeding crops with nutrients when needed to achieve high production while optimizing the use of nutrients from indigenous sources. This concept can be applied to any field and any crop. The systematic implementation of these practices into site specific systems is probably our best opportunity to develop a truly sustainable agriculture system.

Impact of Pesticide in Soil
Many pesticides are used widely to protect plants from disease, weeds and insect damage, and usually come in attached with soil, where they undergo a variety of transformations that provide a complex pattern of metabolites. This article reviews the most relevant analytical methods for determining pesticides and their transformation products in soils. We address some recent advances in sampling and sample-preparation technologies for soil analysis. We discuss and critically evaluate procedures, such as liquid extraction methods (pressurized liquid extraction or microwave-assisted extraction) and solid-phase based methods (headspace solid- phase micro extraction, solid-phase micro extraction or matrix-solid-phase dispersion). Analysis of pesticides is generally carried out by gas chromatography (GC) or liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to different detectors, especially to mass spectrometers (MSs). However, alternative and/or complementary methods, using capillary electrophoresis (CE), biosensors and bioassays have emerged recently. We also consider the advantages and the disadvantages of the various methodologies.
