Starting Category Theory

One of the central highlights of this work is the exploration of the Yoneda lemma and its profound implications, during which intuitive explanations are provided, as well as detailed proofs, and specific examples. This book covers aspects of category theory often considered advanced in a clear and intuitive way, with rigorous mathematical proofs. It investigates universal properties, coherence, the relationship between categories and graphs, and treats monads and comonads on an equal footing, providing theorems, interpretations and concrete examples. Finally, this text contains an introduction to monoidal categories and to strong and commutative monads, which are essential tools in current research but seldom found in other textbooks.Starting Category Theory serves as an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the fundamental concepts of category theory. Originally crafted as lecture notes for an undergraduate course, it has been developed to be equally well-suited for individuals pursuing self-study. Most crucially, it deliberately caters to those who are new to category theory, not requiring readers to have a background in pure mathematics, but only a basic understanding of linear algebra.

Sum Stories

Robin,Wilson  著
2025/06/11 出版

Can one prove that 1 + 1 = 2? How long is the coastline of Britain? Which US president proved Pythagoras' theorem on right-angled triangles? Who originated the quadratic equation we learned at school? In how many ways can you tile your bathroom? Is there a formula for prime numbers? How often are two winning lottery numbers consecutive? Who was the witch of Agnesi? What is 'the most important theorem in mathematics'? Who scratched mathematical equations on a Dublin bridge? What is a 'space-filling curve'? Must all infinities be the same size? These and many other questions are answered in this book which presents eighteen 'Stories' featuring famous mathematical equations and their historical development. The equations arise from geometry, arithmetic, algebra, calculus, combinatorics, number theory, and mathematical logic, and range over 4,000 years from early counting and circle measurement via Renaissance algebra to fractal geometry, and from the geometry of the ancient Greeks via the development of calculus to Boolean algebra and computing. The Stories are well illustrated with historical artefacts and explanatory diagrams. Presented in a straightforward, intelligible, and entertaining manner, Sum Stories is written for general readers of all ages with an interest in mathematics and its historical development.

Fundamentals of Ordinary Differential Equations

Uri,Elias  著
Birkhauser 出版
2025/05/22 出版

This textbook offers an introduction to ODEs that focuses on the qualitative behavior of differential equations rather than specialized methods for solving them. The book is organized around this approach with important topics, such as existence, uniqueness, qualitative behaviour, and stability, appearing in early chapters and explicit solution methods covered later. Proofs are included in an approachable manner, which are first motivated by describing the main ideas in a general sense before being written out in detail. A clear and accessible writing style is used, containing numerous examples and calculations throughout the text. Two appendices offer readers further material to explore, with the first using the orbits of the planets as an illustrative example and the second providing insightful historical notes. After reading this book, students will have a strong foundation for a course in PDEs or mathematical modeling. Fundamentals of Ordinary Differential Equations is suitable for an undergraduate course for students who have taken basic calculus and linear algebra courses, and who are able to read and write basic proofs. Because of its detailed approach, it is also conducive to self-study.

Structured Representation Learning

Yue,Song  著
Springer 出版
2025/05/20 出版

This book introduces approaches to generalize the benefits of equivariant deep learning to a broader set of learned structures through learned homomorphisms. In the field of machine learning, the idea of incorporating knowledge of data symmetries into artificial neural networks is known as equivariant deep learning and has led to the development of cutting edge architectures for image and physical data processing. The power of these models originates from data-specific structures ingrained in them through careful engineering. To-date however, the ability for practitioners to build such a structure into models is limited to situations where the data must exactly obey specific mathematical symmetries. The authors discuss naturally inspired inductive biases, specifically those which may provide types of efficiency and generalization benefits through what are known as homomorphic representations, a new general type of structured representation inspired from techniques in physics and neuroscience. A review of some of the first attempts at building models with learned homomorphic representations are introduced. The authors demonstrate that these inductive biases improve the ability of models to represent natural transformations and ultimately pave the way to the future of efficient and effective artificial neural networks.

Varia Mesopotamica

2025/05/18 出版

The central theme of the 21 essays collected here and written between 1989 and 2019 is Ancient Mesopotamian Mathematics - its techniques and concepts, but also its historical dynamics and its influence on later Greek and Arabic (and thus to later European) mathematical reasoning. In addition, the first essay deals with historical dynamics in the field of language and argues that the Sumerian as a language originated from a creole language of the slaves of the late fourth millennium and only thereafter developed into the elaborate Sumerian language attested in the late 3rd Millennium BCE.

Time Series

Peter,Diggle  著
2025/05/16 出版

Time series analysis is one of several branches of statistics whose practical importance has increased with the availability of powerful computational tools. Methodology that was originally developed for specialized applications, for example in finance or geophysics, is now widely available within general statistical packages. The second edition of Time Series: A Biostatistical Introduction is an introductory account of time series analysis, written from the perspective of applied statisticians whose interests lie primarily in the biomedical and health sciences. This edition has a stronger focus on substantive applications, in which each statistical analysis is directed at a specific research question. Separate chapters cover simple descriptive methods of analysis, including time-plots, smoothing, the correlogram and the periodogram; theory of stationary random processes; discrete-time models for single series; continuous-time models for single series; generalized linear models for time series of counts; models for replicated series; spectral analysis, and bivariate time series. The book is unique in its focus on biomedical and health science applications, which has been strengthened in this second edition. Nevertheless, the methods described are more widely applicable. It should be useful to teachers and students on masters-level degree courses in statistics, biostatistics and epidemiology, and to biomedical and health scientists with a knowledge of statistical methods at undergraduate level. Throughout, examples based on real datasets show a close interplay between statistical method and substantive science. This book will also describe the implementation of the methods in the R computing environment and provide access to R code and datasets.

Generalized Quantum Calculus with Applications

Academic Press 出版
2025/05/14 出版

Generalized Quantum Calculus with Applications is devoted to the qualitative theory of general quantum calculus and its applications to general quantum differential equations and inequalities. The book is aimed at upper-level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students in a range of interdisciplinary courses including physical sciences and engineering, from quantum mechanics to differential equations, with pedagogically organized chapters that each concludes with a section of practical problems. Generalized quantum calculus includes a generalization of the q-quantum calculus and the time scale calculus. There are many open problems and difficulties in q-quantum calculus and time-scale calculus, and this book explores how to use the generalized quantum operators to solve difficulties arising in q-quantum calculus and time-scale calculus, including but not limited to generalized quantum integration, generalized quantum chain rules, and generalized quantum Taylor formula. Since generalized quantum calculus includes the q-quantum and time-scale calculus, this book can be utilized by a wide audience of researchers and students. This text is one of few foundational books on generalized quantum calculus and can be used for future discoveries in the area of integral transforms, variational calculus, integral equations, and inequalities in the language of generalized quantum calculus. This book also offers detailed proofs, exercises, and examples to aid instructors, researchers, and users in their studies.

Conjugacy in Finite Classical Groups

Springer 出版
2025/05/07 出版

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the theory of conjugacy in finite classical groups. Given such a classical group G, the three fundamental problems considered are the following: to list a representative for each conjugacy class of G; to describe the centralizer of each representative, by giving its group structure and a generating set; and to solve the conjugacy problem in G--namely, given two elements of G, establish whether they are conjugate, and if so, find a conjugating element. The book presents comprehensive theoretical solutions to all three problems, and uses these solutions to formulate practical algorithms. In parallel to the theoretical work, implementations of these algorithms have been developed in Magma. These form a critical component of various general algorithms in computational group theory--for example, computing character tables and solving conjugacy problems in arbitrary finite groups.
