How Artifacts Afford

A conceptual update of affordance theory that introduces the mechanisms and conditions framework, providing a vocabulary and critical perspective. Technological affordances mediate between the features of a technology and the outcomes of engagement with that technology. The concept of affordances, which migrated from psychology to design with Donald Norman's influential 1988 book, The Design of Everyday Things, offers a useful analytical tool in technology studies--but, Jenny Davis argues in How Artifacts Afford, it is in need of a conceptual update. Davis provides just such an update, introducing the mechanisms and conditions framework, which offers both a vocabulary and necessary critical perspective for affordance analyses. The mechanisms and conditions framework shifts the question from what objects afford to how objects afford, for whom, and under what circumstances. Davis shows that through this framework, analyses can account for the power and politics of technological artifacts. She situates the framework within a critical approach that views technology as materialized action. She explains how request, demand, encourage, discourage, refuse, and allow are mechanisms of affordance, and shows how these mechanisms take shape through variable conditions--perception, dexterity, and cultural and institutional legitimacy. Putting the framework into action, Davis identifies existing methodological approaches that complement it, including critical technocultural discourse analysis (CTDA), app feature analysis, and adversarial design. In today's rapidly changing sociotechnical landscape, the stakes of affordance analyses are high. Davis's mechanisms and conditions framework offers a timely theoretical reboot, providing tools for the crucial tasks of both analysis and design.

Geotechnical Behavior of Railway Ballast

Ballast is the main structural component of railroad substructure on which the sleepers and rails (superstructure) are laid. In general, ballast aggregates consist of uniformly graded crushed hard rocks. Ballast is frequently subjected to cyclic loading from the trains and exposed to severe weather conditions in service. Performance of the rail track is dependent on the effectiveness of ballast in providing vertical and horizontal stability, optimum resiliency, distribution of loads to the subgrade after reducing to an acceptable intensity and efficient drainage. The performance of ballast is controlled by both the individual and collective properties of ballast. Therefore, studying the geotechnical properties of track ballast to investigate its behavior at service is useful in design better track foundations which provide satisfactory performance and less maintenance. The objective of this publication is to provide details of a comprehensive investigation conducted on the effect of ballast gradation on the settlement behaviour and influence of ballast particle degradation and contamination on the shear strength of ballast.

The maceration process involves keeping the grape must in contact with the grape skins to extract color, aroma, and other components. This is one of the most critical phases in the winemaking process, since it determines the sensory quality of the final product. This innovative scientific research was to determine the optimal contact time between the must and the grapes to produce a low-astringency wine from the Tempranillo red grape variety to appeal to a broader audience. The most critical analyzes involved the determination of phenolic compounds, such as Total Polyphenol Index (TPI), Folin-Ciocalteu Index (FCI), and total tannin content. These analyzes help estimate the level of astringency in red wines, followed by a professional tasting to evaluate the astringency through sensory analysis. Therefore, this study combines objective (physicochemical) and subjective (sensory) analyses.

Performance assessment of G+8 story buildings

Due to a shortage of land and an increasing population, the multi-story structures are built to accommodate many people in the limited areas. People moved from rural to urban areas as a result of the industrial revolution and population increase, necessitating the development of multi-story structures for both residential and commercial purposes. A variety of factors, including the building's intrinsic frequency, damping factor, type of base, importance, and ductility, are taken into account when designing structures that can sustain earthquake pressures. Developing earthquake-resistant structures requires an understanding of seismic analysis to guarantee safety against the seismic pressures of multi-story buildings. The current study examined the percentage of longitudinal steel, reinforcing details, and design base shear of a G+8-story reinforced concrete (RC) structure in three distinct seismic zones. Seismic zones III, IV, and V were assessed for the structure using IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016 norms. According to the results, base shear increased as the seismic zone changed from III to V.

Time and Methods Study in the Foaming Sector of a Magnetic Mattress Company. This book was a study carried out at a company that produces magnetic mattresses, located in the state of Paran獺. The work consisted of analysing the foaming sector (which produces foam in various densities for mattress assembly) using chronoanalysis. The first step was to get to know the sector (number of employees, which densities were produced and their respective quantities). Then work began on measuring the time taken to produce the foams. At the end of the measurements, improvements were proposed, which were accepted by management and coordination. After implementation, the gain in foam production time was verified and compared with the previous method.

The wastewater from the food industry is characterized by a high content of mineral and organic decomposable matter (oxygen), suspensions, and microbial germs, including pathogenic germs. Their reintroduction into the receiver's natural circuit determines the water basin's contamination. The pollution of wastewater from the food industry may be of mineral, organic, or microbiological origin. To conform to the conditions of discharge imposed, wastewater from the food industry should be subject to the treatment process. The main effect of receiving water is the contamination with organic matter that is readily degradable, which causes a reduction in the dissolved oxygen content of water. The richness of water with feed materials, introduced in the form of minerals, or as a result of the decomposition of organic matter, determines an indirect form of pollution - eutrophication. Cleaning the wastewater from the food industry represents all the processes by which the impurities content of mineral nature, organic matter, chemical and biological is reduced below the limit tolerated by the receiver.

3D digitisation of heritage & robotic engineering

This work is structured around two complementary strands, each exploring innovative technologies and their application in specific fields. The first involves 3D digitization applied to cultural heritage, with the Golden Mansour Gate in Meknes, Morocco, as an emblematic example. This approach is part of an effort to preserve and document the complex architectural details of a historic monument, using cutting-edge technologies. Thanks to digital modeling, it is possible to create faithful representations of the structure, paving the way for restoration projects, studies, or even digital enhancement through virtual tours.The second part of the project focuses on the design and manufacture of a 6-axis robot, produced by 3D printing using FDM technology. This innovative additive manufacturing method makes it possible to create complex mechanical components with great flexibility and at low cost. By designing and printing the various parts of the robot, we have demonstrated the possibility of rapidly prototyping a functional robotic system.

Evaluation of environmental radiation levels in the microPET/CT laboratory

The microPET/CT system is an important piece of equipment used in diagnostic imaging research in small animals. The radiopharmaceutical most commonly used in this technology is fluorine-18-labelled fluorodeoxyglucose. The aim of this study is to carry out radiological control in the microPET/CT research laboratory at the IPEN-CNEN/SP Radiopharmacy Centre, in order to meet both national standards and international recommendations. The laboratory is classified by the facility's radioprotection team as a supervised area, in which, although the adoption of specific protection and safety measures is not mandatory, regular reassessments of working environment conditions must be carried out. In order to ensure the radiological protection of workers directly involved in handling the equipment, monitoring of the workplace and assessment of individual dose control were carried out.

Use of Foundry Slag in the Production of Structural Ceramics

This study evaluates the use of granulated foundry slag in ceramic masses for the red ceramics industry, with the aim of not only contributing to the planet's environmental quality by reusing this waste, but also improving the quality of structural ceramics produced in the state of Piau穩. The results showed that the addition of granulated foundry slag to the basic ceramic mass is quite feasible, and in some cases there was an improvement in the technological properties, giving greater quality to the ceramic pieces produced, so this could be an alternative for utilising this waste, while also contributing to the planet's environmental quality.

Nucleus Segmentation for Cervical Cancer Screening with Pap Smears

Cervical cancer, the second most common cancer globally, is highly curable if detected early. However, rural areas face high mortality rates due to poor resources and limited screening programs. Automated diagnosis can address these gaps by distinguishing abnormal Pap smear cells based on nuclear shape. This study evaluates segmentation methods on the AGMC-TU Pap-Smear dataset, achieving a classification accuracy of 92.83% with SVM Linear and improving to 97.65% using optimized features and the FCM method. Accurate nucleus segmentation is crucial for reliable abnormal cell prediction, enhancing cervical cancer screening efficacy.
