Storm Tide and Wave Simulations and Assessment

Sensor Networks in Structural Health Monitoring
The intense development of novel data-driven and hybrid methods for structural health monitoring (SHM) has been demonstrated by field deployments on large-scale systems, including transport, wind energy, and building infrastructure. The actionability of SHM as an essential resource for life-cycle and resilience management is heavily dependent on the advent of low-cost and easily deployable sensors Nonetheless, in optimizing these deployments, a number of open issues remain with respect to the sensing side. These are associated with the type, configuration, and eventual processing of the information acquired from these sensors to deliver continuous behavioral signatures of the monitored structures. This book discusses the latest advances in the field of sensor networks for SHM. The focus lies both in active research on the theoretical foundations of optimally deploying and operating sensor networks and in those technological developments that might designate the next generation of sensing solutions targeted for SHM. The included contributions span the complete SHM information chain, from sensor design to configuration, data interpretation, and triggering of reactive action. The featured papers published in this Special Issue offer an overview of the state of the art and further proceed to introduce novel methods and tools. Methods, Algorithms and Circuits for Photovoltaic Systems Diagnosis and Control
In modern photovoltaic systems, there is an ever-increasing need to improve the system efficiency, to detect internal faults and to guarantee service continuity. The only way to meet these objectives is to utilize and create synergies between diagnostic techniques and control algorithms. Diagnostic methods can be implemented through module-dedicated electronics, by running on real-time embedded systems or by using a huge database on the cloud, profiting from artificial intelligence, machine learning, and classifiers. Model-based diagnostic approaches and data-driven methods are attracting the interest of the scientific community for the automatic detection of phenomena like the occurrence of hot spots, the increase of the ohmic losses, the degradation due to unexpected potentials (PID), switch failures in power electronic converters, and also the reduction of the power production due to soiling or partial shadowing. The detection of malfunctioning or even faults affecting the whole power conversion chain, from the photovoltaic modules to the power conversion stages, allows to perform proper control actions, also in terms of MPPT. Control algorithms, running on an embedded system, are optimized, e.g., through the online adaptation of their own parameters, by suitably processing data coming from the diagnostic algorithms. This book presents recent and original results about the diagnostic approaches to photovoltaic modules and related power electronics and control strategies with the aim to maximize the photovoltaic output power, to increase the whole system efficiency and to guarantee service continuity.
Thermal Systems
We live in interesting times in which life as we know it is being threatened by manmade changes to the atmosphere in which we live. On the global scale, concern is focused on climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions, and on a national scale, atmospheric pollution produced by combustion processes is of concern. A possible approach is through the development of new ideas and innovative processes to the current practices. Among the available options, multi-generation processes such as the trigeneration cycle, battery storage system, solar power plants and heat pumps have been widely studied, as they potentially allow for greater efficiency, lower costs, and reduced emissions. On the other hand, some researchers had been working to increase the potential of energy generation process through heat recovery under the steam generator, organic Rankine cycle, and absorption chillers. In this Special Issue on "Thermal Systems" of fundamental or applied and numerical or experimental investigation, many new concepts in thermal systems and energy utilization were explored and published as original research papers in this "Special Issue".

Hand Book of Basic Textile Weave and Knit Design
Weaving is the interlacing of two sets of yarns, namely warp and weft at right angle in order to product fabric. In woven construction the yarns that are placed lengthwise or parallel to the selvedge (edges of the cloth) are called warp yarns. Each thread or yarn in the warp is called an end. The yarns that run crosswise are called weft (filling) yarns and each thread in the weft is called a pick. Weave fall in to three category, namely basic weave (which are most popular and include plain, twill, satin and those weave that are developed from them) fancy and compound structures. Knitting is a method of constructing fabric by intermeshing series of loops of one or more yarns. The knitted structure consists of one set of yarn, weft or warp, and is divided into weft knitted fabric and warp knitted fabric. The four primary wefts knitted structures are Plain, Rib, Interlock and Purl. The common warp knitted structures include chain, tricot and atlas.

Soil mechanics is the science of studying the physical and mechanical properties of the soil, the mechanical processes occurring in the soil under the influence of external as well as internal effects, thereby finding out the properties and regulations of the soil to address the problem of using soil for the purposes of construction buildings.Soil plays an important role in construction. Firstly, construction materials include construction sand; soil materials for floor leveling of houses, roads, airports, storage yards, and similar structures; soil materials for construction of dykes, slopes, dams, and similar structures. Secondly, the foundation for construction works. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the load-bearing capacity and the deformation of the ground. Disentangling Mechanisms of Genomic Regulation of Cell Functions at the Gene Level

Advanced Methods for Seismic Performance Evaluation of Building Structures
This Special Issue was created to collect the most recent and novel research on seismic performance evaluation of building structures. This issue includes three important topics on seismic engineering for building structures: (1) seismic design and performance evaluation, (2) structural dynamics, and (3) seismic hazard and risk analysis. UAS-Remote Sensing Methods for Mapping, Monitoring and Modeling Crops
The advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms and onboard sensors in the past few years have greatly increased our ability to monitor and map crops. The ability to register images at ultrahigh spatial resolution at any moment has made remote sensing techniques increasingly useful in crop management. These technologies have revolutionized the way in which remote sensing is applied in precision agriculture, allowing for decision-making in a matter of days instead of weeks. However, it is still necessary to continue research to improve and maximize the potential of UAV remote sensing in agriculture. This Special Issue of Remote Sensing includes different applications of UAV remote sensing for crop management, covering RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor applications aboard UAVs. The papers reveal innovative techniques involving image analysis and cloud points. However, it should be emphasized that this Special Issue is a small sample of UAV applications in agriculture and that there is much more to investigate.
Gas Transport in Glassy Polymers
This Special Issue of Membranes focuses on several new aspects of fluid transport in glassy polymers, with application in relevant membrane separations such as gas purification, VOC removal and CO2 capture. In particular, the focus lies on novel experimental techniques, and detailed characterization of specific phenomena like polar and multicomponent interactions during transport. The properties of novel materials, such as mixed matrix membranes based on glassy polymers and different selective fillers, are also presented. A critical review of existing modeling approaches to describe the sorption and transport in glassy polymers suitable for membrane separations is provided, including both macroscopic and atomistic models, and relying both on the standard solution-diffusion process and on the facilitated transport mechanism.
Integration of Electric Vehicles and Battery Storage Systems
Achieving the goal of green and environmentally friendly energy systems is not possible without the concept of energy storage. Such storage should charge when renewable generation, e.g., photovoltaics and wind farms, is abundant and discharge during periods of its scarcity. Although pumped hydropower plants have been widely used as extremely large capacity energy storage, the recent technological developments in lithium-based batteries have made them economically feasible. The major advantages of batteries over a conventional energy storage system, i.e., hydropower, include its modularity and ease of integration with the transport system. This Special Issue is thus focused on both stationary batteries and mobile batteries in electric vehicles. Both should be used to provide flexibility and balancing services to power systems. While stationary batteries are focused solely on the power system, the batteries within electric vehicles need to primarily fulfill the task of providing energy for transportation. This is why their use in power systems is secondary. However, due to generally long parking periods, they can become a detrimental asset in terms of balancing the power system.

Sensor Technology for Smart Homes
This Special Issue presents the recent advances in sensor technologies for smart homes, including fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for detecting the presence and number of occupants, the Internet of things for monitoring CO2 concentration, and designing a novel eye-tracking system for monitoring and controlling a smart home, and infrared thermal sensors for fall detection. Such new explorations are pushing the boundary of sensing technologies and, thus, will have more profound implications for the future smart home. Advanced machine learning and data mining algorithms have been proposed to address sensor failure, appliance identification, and human activity recognition in a home environment. These results will enable a promising, sustainable deployment of sensing technologies. A novel multi-agent gamification system is proposed for managing tasks between household members and between families, which demonstrate another dimension of future smart home application. This Special Issue concludes with a review on sensors for human activity recognition. This work paves the roadmap for deploying smart home systems in different socioeconomic contexts. The whole Special Issue has significantly helped to shape our understanding of the strength, implications, and barriers of deploying long-term, sustainable, sensor technologies for smart homes.
Infrared Nanophotonics
Infrared light radiates from almost all the matter on earth, and its strategic use will be an important issue for the enhancement of human life and the sustainable development of modern industry. Since its frequency is in the same region as phonons or molecular vibrations of materials, measuring its emission or absorption spectra helps us in characterizing and identifying materials in a non-destructive manner. Meanwhile, if we can spectroscopically design infrared emission by tuning chemical composition or artificially controlling nano- to mesoscale structures, this will have a great impact on industrial applications, such as thermophotovoltaics, energy-saving drying furnaces, spectroscopic infrared light sources, and various types of infrared sensors. In this Special Issue, we encourage submissions from researchers who are working on infrared nanophotonics based on MEMS/NEMS, and nanomaterials science, ranging from materials synthesis, to device fabrications, electromagnetic simulations, and thermal managements. Important topics of growing interest are wavelength-selective infrared emitters and detectors, where we can see rapid development in the fields of nano-plasmonics and metamaterials, and we invite such topics for inclusion in this Special Issue. We also encourage submissions on nano-materials science such as on graphene-based infrared detectors/emitters, and nanostructured narrow-band gap semiconductors.

Integration of Renewables in Power Systems by Multi-Energy System Interaction
This book focuses on the interaction between different energy vectors, that is, between electrical, thermal, gas, and transportation systems, with the purpose of optimizing the planning and operation of future energy systems. More and more renewable energy is integrated into the electrical system, and to optimize its usage and ensure that its full production can be hosted and utilized, the power system has to be controlled in a more flexible manner. In order not to overload the electrical distribution grids, the new large loads have to be controlled using demand response, perchance through a hierarchical control set-up where some controls are dependent on price signals from the spot and balancing markets. In addition, by performing local real-time control and coordination based on local voltage or system frequency measurements, the grid hosting limits are not violated.

Manufactured Sand as Fine Aggregate in Concrete
During the past few decades common river sand has become expensive due to excessive cost of transport from natural sources. Large scale depletions of these sources have led to many environmental impacts. In order to overcome these impacts an alternative has to be found in order to replace river sand. The manufactured sand (M-sand) has found to be economical alternative to the river sand. M-sand is obtained as a crushing of granite stones in required grading to be used for construction purposes as a replacement for river sand. M-sand has been used in large scale in highways as surface finishing materials and also used in the manufacture of hollow blocks and in light weight concrete prefabricated elements. In this, investigations were carried out to study the compressive strength and split tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of concrete by partial and fully replacement of M-sand by river sand. And compare the results obtained from both the river sand and the M-sand. The present investigations mainly focused on the M-sand properties and the strength obtained from both the river sand and M sand. This investigation is also based on the comparison of the compressive strength and split tensile strength, flexural Strength and impact strength achieved by the cubes, beams and cylinders in normal sand and M-sand.

Chitosan is obtained by deacetylation of chitin and is an important polymer in water treatment. Activated carbon is a powerful absorbent that is used in filtration. Effects of temperature, time, oh and agitation was studied. The research pointed important leads to embracing chitosan in waste water treatment. Kenya is a major sugar producer with a sugar production output of 591,658 tonnes. The sugar industry encompasses sugar refining which yields molasses used in molasses distilleries to produce ethanol. The molasses distillery produces distillery waste known as spent wash which has a high BOD/COD, bad odor and brown color. The high BOD/COD can be removed by conventional means such as aerobic and anaerobic digesters, but it is this brown caramelized compounds known as melanoidins that must be removed by unconventional means since they are recalcitrant and difficult to biodegrade biologically. This project aims to explore options of removing recalcitrant compounds in molasses waste water by adsorption process using powdered activated carbon and chitosan a biopolymer derived from chitin. Sugarcane molasses is the by-product of the sugar production industry which are generated during sugar production. Sugarcane molasses contains 50% fermentable sugar is dark brown, putrid and viscous liquid. Sugarcane molasses is a feedstock for ethanol production and is used in a ratio of 1:1 for fermentation and purification of spirit. The product collected as bottom products form spent wash which is the major constituent of molasses waste water. Small-Scale Energy Systems with Gas Turbines and Heat Pumps
A heat pump system can produce an amount of heat energy that is greater than the amount of energy used to run the heat pump system. Thus, a heat pump system is considered to be a machine system that can use energies efficiently, as is the load leveling air-conditioning system utilizing unutilized energies at high levels. Adaptations of gas turbines for industrial, utility, and marine-propulsion applications have long been accepted as means for generating power with high efficiency and ease of maintenance. Cogeneration with gas turbine is frequently defined as the sequential production of useful thermal energy and shaft power from a single energy source. For applications that generate electricity, the power can either be used internally or supplied to the utility grid. This Special Issue intends to provide an overviews of the existing knowledge related with various aspects of "Small-Scale Energy Systems with Gas Turbines and Heat Pumps", and contributions on, but not limited to the following subjects were encouraged: wake of stator vane to improve sealing effectiveness; gas turbine cycle with external combustion chamber for prosumer and distributed energy systems; computational simulation of gas turbine engine operating with different blends of biodiesel; experimental methodology and facility for the engine performance and emissions evaluation using jet and biodiesel blends; experimental analysis of an air heat pump for heating service; hybrid fuel cell-Brayton cycle for combined heat and power; design analysis of micro gas turbines in closed cycles. These fertilizers greatly affect enzymatic activities in the soil profile but poor management of the chemical fertilizers has a key role in lowering the yield productivity and deteriorate the soil health also. So, to achieve optimum crop production, there is a need to use the combination of organic sources, inorganic sources, bio-fertilizers. Maize (Zea mays L.) requires the nutrients i.e., macronutrients as well as micronutrients for obtaining the higher crop growth and yield. The micronutrients content in organic manure may be sufficient to meet the crop requirement but the low soil fertility is the major problem to maintain sustainability in production. The application of organic manure do not produce optimum yield due to low nutrient status but they play a direct role in plant growth by the mineralization they provide the essential nutrients which furthermore improves the physical and biological properties of the soil. The use of organic plays an important role in maintaining soil health due to the build-up of soil organic matter, beneficial microbes. "Biofertilizer" is a substance that contains living organisms. Advanced DC-DC Power Converters and Switching Converters
Nowadays, power electronics is an enabling technology in the energy development scenario. Furthermore, power electronics is strictly linked with several fields of technological growth, such as consumer electronics, IT and communications, electrical networks, utilities, industrial drives and robotics, and transportation and automotive sectors. Moreover, the widespread use of power electronics enables cost savings and minimization of losses in several technology applications required for sustainable economic growth. The topologies of DC-DC power converters and switching converters are under continuous development and deserve special attention to highlight the advantages and disadvantages for use increasingly oriented towards green and sustainable development. DC-DC converter topologies are developed in consideration of higher efficiency, reliable control switching strategies, and fault-tolerant configurations. Several types of switching converter topologies are involved in isolated DC-DC converter and nonisolated DC-DC converter solutions operating in hard-switching and soft-switching conditions. Switching converters have applications in a broad range of areas in both low and high power densities.
