Measurement, Uncertainty and Lasers
Measurement of values is fundamental in science and technology, and it plays a major role in our everyday lives. Measurement, Uncertainty and Lasers examines the importance of uncertainty, accuracy and precision of measurement, and explains how laser technology has helped improve measurement and redefine standards. Concepts of measurement uncertainty, in both a qualitative and quantitative manner, are introduced and key equations, formulae and qualitative descriptions are included. This book discusses SI units, standards and the importance of using lasers for measurement in modern metrology, including the redefinition of SI units over time, which recently culminated in the agreement to redefine the kilogram and will take effect in May 2019. Real-life case studies are also provided; from the implications for measuring times at the Olympics, to the impacts in criminal investigations.
Applications of Computer Vision in Automation and Robotics
This book presents recent research results related to various applications of computer vision methods in the widely understood contexts of automation and robotics. As the current progress of image analysis applications may be easily observed in various areas of everyday life, it becomes one of the most essential elements of development of Industry 4.0 solutions. Some of the examples, partially discussed in individual chapters, may be related to the visual navigation of mobile robots and drones, monitoring of industrial production lines, non-destructive evaluation and testing, monitoring of the IoT devices or the 3D printing process and the quality assessment of manufactured objects, video surveillance systems, and decision support in autonomous vehicles.
Sustainable Management of Urban Water Resources
It is well known that 55% of the world's population currently lives in urban areas, and this figure is predicted to grow to 68% by 2050, adding more than 2.5 billion people to urban populations. It is also projected that there will be 43 megacities worldwide by 2030, with populations of more than 10 million inhabitants. The United Nations World Water Development Report, 2018, warned that by 2030, the global demand for fresh water is likely to exceed supply by 40%. Added to population growth, climate change has the potential to lead to changes in rainfall regimes, with the potential of increased flooding and drought. Currently, 1.2 billion people are at risk from flooding, but this is predicted to increase to about 1.6 billion, i.e., nearly 20% of the total world population, by 2050. In line with this, replacing deteriorating water management infrastructure that can no longer cope is economically unfeasible, impracticable from a construction point of view, and likely to fail in the long term. To address these issues, approaches are needed that are flexible and have multiple benefits. In its World Water Development Report, 2018, the UN promotes the use of nature-based solutions to some of these problems, with the focus of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (making sure that everyone has access to a safe and affordable supply of potable water and sanitation by 2030) requiring investment in suitable infrastructure across the world. This Special Issue covers the challenges faced in managing urban water in all its forms, from potable supplies to reuse and harvesting, as well as resilient and sustainable approaches developed to address flooding and drought.

The Extraction State
The history of the United States of America is also the history of the energy sector. Natural gas provides the fuel that allows us to heat our homes in winter and cool them in summer with the touch of a button or turn of a dial--when the industry runs smoothly. From the oil crisis of the 1970s to the fall of Enron and the California electricity crisis at the turn of the century to contemporary issues of hydraulic fracking, poorly conceived government policies have sometimes left us shivering, stranded, or with significantly lighter wallets. In this expansive narrative, Charles Blanchard traces the rise of natural gas and the regulatory missteps that nearly ruined the market. Beginning in the 1880s, The Extraction State explains how the New Deal regulatory compact came together in the 1920s, even before the Great Depression, and how it fell apart in the 1970s. From there, the book dissects the policies that affect us today, and explores where we might be headed in the near future.
Micro- and Macroparticle enhanced cultivation of filamentous Lentzea aerocolonigenes for increased rebeccamycin production
The filamentous actinomycete Lentzea aerocolonigenes produces the antitumor antibiotic rebeccamycin. However, the complex morphology of actinomycetes leads to challenges during the cultivation often accompanied by low product titers. In the recent past, the to date low rebeccamycin titers were increased by particle addition to cultivations of L. aerocolonigenes. In this thesis the addition of micro-, macro- and adsorbent particles to cultivations of L. aerocolonigenes were investigated in more detail. Furthermore, the scale-up to a bubble-free bioreactor was conducted. The addition of glass microparticles (x50 = 7.9 μm, 10 g L-1) to shake flask cultivations increased the rebeccamycin titer up to 3.6-fold compared to an unsupplemented approach. Pellet slices showed the incorporation of microparticles. With different surface modifications of the microparticles, specific incorporation patterns of the microparticles appeared. The incorporation of microparticles causes looser and smaller pellets allowing an increased nutrient and oxygen supply in the pellet core. With addition of larger (glass) macroparticles (繪 = 0.2 - 2.1 mm, 100 g L-1) mechanical stress was induced on the biopellets. The additional supplementation of 5 g L-1 soy lecithin and glass beads (繪 = 969 μm, 100 g L-1) resulted in a rebeccamycin titer of 388 mg L-1, one of the highest rebeccamycin titers ever achieved. For the scale-up of L. aerocolonigenes cultivations a bubble-free membrane aeration system was developed. The tubular membrane aeration system can additionally be pressurized to increase the oxygen transfer. First cultivations of L. aerocolonigenes successfully provided 18 mg L-1 rebeccamycin, a concentration similar to that of unsupplemented shake flask cultivations. XAD adsorbent particles were added to cultivations to facilitate rebeccamycin recovery. However, the XAD particles additionally increased the rebeccamycin titer which was likely to be caused by the adsorption of the rebeccamycin pr

Magic, Science, and Religion in Early Modern Europe
From the recovery of ancient ritual magic at the height of the Renaissance to the ignominious demise of alchemy at the dawn of the Enlightenment, Mark A. Waddell explores the rich and complex ways that premodern people made sense of their world. He describes a time when witches flew through the dark of night to feast on the flesh of unbaptized infants, magicians conversed with angels or struck pacts with demons, and astrologers cast the horoscopes of royalty. Ground-breaking discoveries changed the way that people understood the universe while, in laboratories and coffee houses, philosophers discussed how to reconcile the scientific method with the veneration of God. This engaging, illustrated new study introduces readers to the vibrant history behind the emergence of the modern world.
Mesh-Free and Finite Element-Based Methods for Structural Mechanics Applications
The problem of solving complex engineering problems has always been a major topic in all industrial fields, such as aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering. The use of numerical methods has increased exponentially in the last few years, due to modern computers in the field of structural mechanics. Moreover, a wide range of numerical methods have been presented in the literature for solving such problems. Structural mechanics problems are dealt with using partial differential systems of equations that might be solved by following the two main classes of methods: Domain-decomposition methods or the so-called finite element methods and mesh-free methods where no decomposition is carried out. Both methodologies discretize a partial differential system into a set of algebraic equations that can be easily solved by computer implementation. The aim of the present Special Issue is to present a collection of recent works on these themes and a comparison of the novel advancements of both worlds in structural mechanics applications.

Assessment of Causes and Impacts Of Flooding On Agricultural Production of Plains Surrounding Lake Tana, Ethiopia
Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: Very Good, course: Irrigation Engineering, language: English, abstract: This study is an attempt to identify the main causes and effect of flooding on agricultural production and the peoples living in the Lake Tana surroundings. Although floods are relatively common during the June to September rainy season in Ethiopia, the magnitude of the current flooding in 2006 is unprecedented. In year 2006 the country has experienced some of the heaviest and most intense rains on record; resulting in flash floods and/or the overflow of rivers, lakes and dams, where local residents have been advised to leave. The impact of the disaster in terms of lives, infrastructure, livelihoods, and basic coping mechanisms has yet to be assessed The rainfall variability analysis of the Lake Tana (LT) basin in 2006 showed an on average 43% increase in wet season rainfall than the normal (mean). All rainfall gauging stations show an increase in rainfall in 2006. Similarly, the variability analysis of major rivers also showed that on average 35% increase in flood season streamflow of G/Abay, Gumara, Rib, Megech, and Koga. The trend of these rivers shows that maximum runoff for the year 2006 was higher than the mean of the long term maximum flood. Whereas Lake Tana maximum flood level of 2006 (1787.155masl) shows an increase of 16 cm only from the mean flood levels of previous records (1787 masl). The Pearson III method of the moment probability distribution is the best fit for Megech and Rib rivers. For Gumara river Pearson III probability weighted moment distribution better estimate flood quantiles with less standard error. It is also found that Gamma two probability weighted moment is the best fit for Lake Tana water surface level. In general, from rainfall and flood frequency analysis the 2006-year flooding may have a chance to occur once in six years in LTB. The 2006-year flood damage indicates that there is a hi

Production of labyrinthopeptin A1 with Actinomadura namibiensis
The filamentous actinomycete Actinomadura namibiensis is the only known producer of labyrinthopeptins, a class of ribosomally synthesized and posttranslationally modified peptides (RiPPs) displaying highly attractive bioactive properties. In order to increase the labyrinthopeptin A1 productivity in shaking flask cultivations of A. namibiensis, a new cultivation method called salt-enhanced cultivation was used. Compared to the unsupplemented control, labyrinthopeptin A1 productivity was enhanced the most by addition of 50 mM (NH4)2SO4, reaching a 7-fold higher yield of 325 mg L-1 within 10 cultivation days. Salt-enhanced cultivation affected growth and product formation mechanisms, cell morphology characteristics and rheological characteristics of cultivation broth. An image analysis method was developed to quantify both the macro-morphology (pellet size and shape) and the micro-morphology (hyphal network structure) of the heterogeneous filamentous biomass in detail. Productivity-related morphological parameters were in particular the size and circularity of pellets and the degree of hyphal interweaving (hyphal network spacing). It was shown that the time-dependent change in morphology linked to the rheological properties of the cultivation broth. The results presented in this work provide new insights into the cultivation aspects of A. namibiensis and illustrate the challenges on the way to a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between productivity, morphology and rheology in filamentous cultivations.

Using Geo-Information to Monitor Groundwater Irrigated Projects in Egypt
Geo-Information is very important in the worldwide organizations due to its efficiency. GIS technology can be used in Egypt which is an arid country to manage the water resources especially groundwater. The sustainable groundwater management is one of the most important issues Egypt faces in monitoring reclamation projects especially the most of reclamation lands are far from the center of decision makers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an appropriate Spatial Decision Support System which quickly enables the decision makers to manage and determine the optimal use of groundwater resources without depletion by using a Web GIS in order to explore means of increasing water resources efficiency based on dynamic maps and current data.

Miniaturized Silicon Photodetectors
Silicon (Si) technologies provide an excellent platform for the design of microsystems where photonic and microelectronic functionalities are monolithically integrated on the same substrate. In recent years, a variety of passive and active Si photonic devices have been developed, and among them, photodetectors have attracted particular interest from the scientific community. Si photodiodes are typically designed to operate at visible wavelengths, but, unfortunately, their employment in the infrared (IR) range is limited due to the neglectable Si absorption over 1100 nm, even though the use of germanium (Ge) grown on Si has historically allowed operations to be extended up to 1550 nm. In recent years, significant progress has been achieved both by improving the performance of Si-based photodetectors in the visible range and by extending their operation to infrared wavelengths. Near-infrared (NIR) SiGe photodetectors have been demonstrated to have a "zero change" CMOS process flow, while the investigation of new effects and structures has shown that an all-Si approach could be a viable option to construct devices comparable with Ge technology. In addition, the capability to integrate new emerging 2D and 3D materials with Si, together with the capability of manufacturing devices at the nanometric scale, has led to the development of new device families with unexpected performance. Accordingly, this Special Issue of Micromachines seeks to showcase research papers, short communications, and review articles that show the most recent advances in the field of silicon photodetectors and their respective applications.

Smart Wireless Acoustic Sensor Network Design for Noise Monitoring in Smart Cities
The Environmental Noise Directive (END) requires that a five-year updating of noise maps is carried out to check and report on the changes that have occurred during the reference period. The updating process is usually achieved using a standardized approach consisting of collecting and processing information through acoustic models to produce the updated noise maps. This procedure is time consuming and costly, and has a significant impact on the financial statement of the authorities responsible for providing the maps. Furthermore, the END requires that easy-to-read noise maps are made available to the public to provide information on noise levels and the subsequent actions to be undertaken by local and central authorities to reduce noise impacts. In order to update the noise maps more easily and in a more effective way, it is convenient to design an integrated system incorporating real-time noise measurement and signal processing to identify and analyze the noise sources present in the mapping area (e.g., road traffic noise, leisure noise, etc.) as well as to automatically generate and present the corresponding noise maps. This wireless acoustic sensor network design requires transversal knowledge, from accurate hardware design for acoustic sensors to network structure design and management of the information with signal processing to identify the origin of the measured noise and graphical user interface application design to present the results to end users. This book is collection in which several views of methodology and technologies required for the development of an efficient wireless acoustic sensor network from the first stages of its design to the tests conducted during deployment, its final performance, and possible subsequent implications for authorities in terms of the definition of policies. Contributions include several LIFE and H2020 projects aimed at the design and implementation of intelligent acoustic sensor networks with a focus on the publication of good practices for the design and deployment of intelligent networks in other locations.

Hathorn, Davey of Leeds. Manufacturers of Steam Pumping Machinery 1872 to 2016
Hathorn, Davey was a successful Leeds (West Yorkshire, United Kingdom) engineering company in the 19th and 20th centuries that rapidly gained a reputation for the manufacture of reliable and efficient steam pumping engines. The company started in 1872 as a means for a retired Scottish Army Captain, John Fletcher Hathorn, to give his half-brother a worthwhile career. A year later, a young engineer Henry Davey, joined the Partnership. Davey was to become probably one of the most innovative engineers in pumping technology of the period, and it was his patent of a new type of steam engine governor, the differential gear, together with its application to the two-cylinder Compound Engine, that gave the Company worldwide fame. Other innovations followed including a low-steam pressure domestic or safety motor that Davey used at his house at Headingley, Leeds. The Compound Engine was the Company's bestseller in the 19th century, and a number of those engines survive in the United Kingdom at Ebbw Vale, South Wales, Cheddars Lane Technology Museum, Cambridge and the Mill Meece Pumping Station, Staffordshire. In the 20th century, the Triple Expansion Engine superseded the Compound, and was exported to Uruguay and Australia. There are examples in both countries. In the United Kingdom working Triple Expansion Engines can be found at Twyford, Hampshire and the London Museum of Water and Steam. By 1900 the Company had come under the Directorship of the influential Lupton family of Leeds, and in 1901 the partnership converted to a private company. However, like many companies in the 1930s, Hathorn Davey fell on hard times and it was taken over by Sulzer Brothers of Switzerland in 1936. They retained the name Hathorn Davey as a dormant company until 2016. 'Hathorn, Davey of Leeds' is a detailed history of a engineering company, located in the Hunslet area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. The first few chapters describe the establishment of the Sun Foundry where the Company was based. From 1872, the foundry was operated by a number of partnerships, led by John Fletcher Hathorn, a Scottish Landowner. Henry Davey was made a partner 1874 and Hathorn, Davey eventually appeared as the Company's title. Davey was responsible for a number of original innovations that contributed to the firm's excellent reputation for reliability and efficiency. Eventually their steam pumping engines were exported all over the world. The 366 page book is amply illustrated with examples of the engines and pumps that the Company produced, together with minimal explanations of the technology taken from a variety of patents, and technical journals. The Hathorn, Davey Orders Books provide a common thread throughout the book. The book concludes with two appendices that provide details of the Order Books and the many patents taken out by Henry Davey.
The Future of Everything
We are in the middle of the greatest technological revolution in history. Its epicentre lies in Silicon Valley, but its impacts are felt on all corners of the earth. It could give all of us a better quality of life and new, more cooperative ways of living. Or it could further concentrate the world's wealth in the hands of a few. This book offers a bold vision for ensuring that we achieve the former. A world that is fairer, less violent and most radical of all, more joyous. Tim Dunlop spells out his ideas for reclaiming common ground systematically, arguing the case for more public ownership of essential assets, more public space, a transparent media system and an education that prepares us for the future, not the past. His vision for improved democracies and societies is practical and realistic, grounded in knowledge of what we are doing well and what we must do better. He argues that we have the policy tools to make it happen - what we need is public and political will.

Micro- and Nano-Fabrication by Metal Assisted Chemical Etching
Metal-assisted chemical etching (MacEtch) has recently emerged as a new etching technique capable of fabricating high aspect ratio nano- and microstructures in a few semiconductors substrates-Si, Ge, poly-Si, GaAs, and SiC-and using different catalysts-Ag, Au, Pt, Pd, Cu, Ni, and Rh. Several shapes have been demonstrated with a high anisotropy and feature size in the nanoscale-nanoporous films, nanowires, 3D objects, and trenches, which are useful components of photonic devices, microfluidic devices, bio-medical devices, batteries, Vias, MEMS, X-ray optics, etc. With no limitations of large-areas and low-cost processing, MacEtch can open up new opportunities for several applications where high precision nano- and microfabrication is required. This can make semiconductor manufacturing more accessible to researchers in various fields, and accelerate innovation in electronics, bio-medical engineering, energy, and photonics. Accordingly, this Special Issue seeks to showcase research papers, short communications, and review articles that focus on novel methodological developments in MacEtch, and its use for various applications.
Information Theory for Data Communications and Processing
Modern, current, and future communications/processing aspects motivate basic information-theoretic research for a wide variety of systems for which we do not have the ultimate theoretical solutions (for example, a variety of problems in network information theory as the broadcast/interference and relay channels, which mostly remain unsolved in terms of determining capacity regions and the like). Technologies such as 5/6G cellular communications, Internet of Things (IoT), and mobile edge networks, among others, not only require reliable rates of information measured by the relevant capacity and capacity regions, but are also subject to issues such as latency vs. reliability, availability of system state information, priority of information, secrecy demands, energy consumption per mobile equipment, sharing of communications resources (time/frequency/space), etc. This book, composed of a collection of papers that have appeared in the Special Issue of the Entropy journal dedicated to "Information Theory for Data Communications and Processing", reflects, in its eleven chapters, novel contributions based on the firm basic grounds of information theory. The book chapters address timely theoretical and practical aspects that constitute both interesting and relevant theoretical contributions, as well as direct implications for modern current and future communications systems.

Entropy Based Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring
Traditionally fatigue, fracture, damage mechanics are predictions are based on empirical curve fitting models based on experimental data. However, when entropy is used as the metric for degradation of the material, the modeling process becomes physics based rather than empirical modeling. Because, entropy generation in a material can be calculated from the fundamental equation of thematerial. This collection of manuscripts is about using entropy for "Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring". The theoretical paper in the collection provides the mathematical and physics framework behind the unified mechanics theory, which unifies universal laws of motion of Newton and laws of thermodynamics at ab-initio level. Unified Mechanics introduces an additional axis called, Thermodynamic State Index axis which is linearly independent from Newtonian space x, y, z and time. As a result, derivative of displacement with respect to entropy is not zero, in unified mechanics theory, as in Newtonian mechanics. Any material is treated as a thermodynamic system and fundamental equation of the material is derived. Fundamental equation defines entropy generation rate in the system. Experimental papers in the collection prove validity of using entropy as a stable metric for Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring.
Micromanufacturing of Metallic Materials
Product miniaturization is a trend for facilitating product usage, enabling product functions to be implemented in microscale geometries, and aimed at reducing product weight, volume, cost and pollution. Driven by ongoing miniaturization in diverse areas, including medical devices, precision equipment, communication devices, micro-electromechanical systems and microsystems technology, the demands for micro metallic products have been tremendously increased. Such a trend requires the development of advanced technology for the micromanufacturing of metallic materials, with regard to producing high-quality micro metallic products that possess excellent dimensional tolerances, the required mechanical properties and improved surface quality. Micromanufacturing differs from conventional manufacturing technology in terms of materials, processes, tools, and machines and equipment, due to the miniaturization nature of the whole micromanufacturing system, which challenges the rapid development of micromanufacturing technology. Such a background has prompted and encouraged us to publish a scholarly book on the topic of the micromanufacturing of metallic materials, with the purpose of providing readers with a valuable document that can be used in the research and development of micromanufacturing technology. This book will be useful for both theoretical and applied research aimed at micromanufacturing technology, and will serve as an important research tool, providing knowledge to be returned to the community not only as valuable scientific literature, but also as technology, processes and productivities.
Coverage effects on metal surfaces binding energetics. UBI-QEP Approach
Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, language: English, abstract: This paper presents a unified formulation of the unity bond index-quadratic exponential potential method (UBI-QEP, formerly known as the BOC-MP method) for determining equilibrium coverage-dependent atomic binding energies as a result of coverage effect, the basic UBI-QEP parameters and correlation between local and global adsorbate coverage is briefly clarified, then coadsorption effects on reaction energetic on monometallic surfaces and most important cases of coverage effects on fcc(111) and fcc(100) surfaces is reviewed, the different metal atom and adatoms interactions are also looked at followed by their respective heats of adsorption at non-zero coverage limits i.e. metal atoms with identical adatoms, A and different adatoms, A and B, diadatoms AB, including a brief review on polyatomics.

Point-of-Care Detection Devices for Healthcare
With recent technological advances in multiple research fields such as materials science, micro-/nano-technology, cellular and molecular biology, bioengineering and the environment, much attention is shifting toward the development of new detection tools that not only address needs for high sensitivity and specificity but fulfil economic, environmental, and rapid point-of-care needs for groups and individuals with constrained resources and, possibly, limited training. Miniaturized fluidics-based platforms that precisely manipulate tiny body fluid volumes can be used for medical, healthcare or even environmental (e.g., heavy metal detection) diagnosis in a rapid and accurate manner. These new detection technologies are potentially applicable to different healthcare or environmental issues, since they are disposable, inexpensive, portable, and easy to use for the detection of human diseases or environmental issues-especially when they are manufactured based on low-cost materials, such as paper. The topics in this book (original and review articles) would cover point-of-care detection devices, microfluidic or paper-based detection devices, new materials for making detection devices, and others.
Thermal and Electro-thermal System Simulation 2020
This book, edited by Prof. Marta Rencz and Prof Andras Poppe, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and by Prof. Lorenzo Codecasa, Politecnico di Milano, collects fourteen papers carefully selected for the "thermal and electro-thermal system simulation" Special Issue of Energies. These contributions present the latest results in a currently very "hot" topic in electronics: the thermal and electro-thermal simulation of electronic components and systems. Several papers here proposed have turned out to be extended versions of papers presented at THERMINIC 2019, which was one of the 2019 stages of choice for presenting outstanding contributions on thermal and electro-thermal simulation of electronic systems. The papers proposed to the thermal community in this book deal with modeling and simulation of state-of-the-art applications which are highly critical from the thermal point of view, and around which there is great research activity in both industry and academia. In particular, contributions are proposed on the multi-physics simulation of families of electronic packages, multi-physics advanced modeling in power electronics, multiphysics modeling and simulation of LEDs, batteries and other micro and nano-structures.
Advances in Vehicular Networks
Connected and automated vehicles have revolutionized the way we move, granting new services on roads. This Special Issue collects contributions that address reliable and ultra-low-latency vehicular applications that range from advancements at the access layer, such as using the visible light spectrum to accommodate ultra-low-latency applications, to data dissemination solutions. Further, articles discuss edge computing, neural network-based techniques, and the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to boost throughput and enhance coverage.
Operation, Regulation and Planning of Power and Natural Gas Systems
Worldwide, electricity systems are evolving to adapt to a low-carbon economy in which increasingly more renewable energy resources are being integrated. These changes, in turn, make the development of new methods, tools, and approaches to deal with the operation and planning of electricity systems necessary. On the other hand, new regulations must be developed in order to deal with a wide integration of renewable and distributed energy resources, both from a generation and a network (transmission and distribution) perspective. Furthermore, the natural gas sector is going through significant transformation related mainly to both technological advances and strategic policy decisions. While there is great uncertainty in the future of natural gas within the global energy matrix, it is clear that it will play a major role during the next years as a bridge fuel towards a decarbonized economy. In this context, natural gas systems are undergoing deep transformations, necessitating the development of new tools to operate and plan gas systems as well as new approaches to regulate them. This book, therefore, seeks to contribute to the energy transformation agenda through original contributions focused on both power and natural gas systems, addressing innovative operation and planning methods as well as regulation of both energy systems.
