Development & Experimental Validation of the Viscous Garabedian and Korn (VGK) Code for the Study of ”Aerofoil Surface Irregularities” Flow Behavior at High Subsonic Speeds
The Viscous Garabedian & Korn is a 2-D computational code written in Fortran 77 for the flow calculations around aerofoil sections. The present author uses the original form to experimentally validate the code and further develop its capabilities to deal with flows at high subsonic speeds around aerofoils with surface irregularities. The purpose is to investigatethe effects of irregular surface roughness (Indentations) with the code's grid density resolutions. The main development of the code is related to the grid generated allowing a higher resolution (more grid points) to better represent the flow. Development also included the study of the code's stability, consistency and convergence with the new grid resolution particularly at higher subsonic speeds.
Advances in Modeling and Management of Urban Water Networks
The Special Issue on Advances in Modeling and Management of Urban Water Networks (UWNs) explores four important topics of research in the context of UWNs: asset management, modeling of demand and hydraulics, energy recovery, and pipe burst identification and leakage reduction. In the first topic, the multi-objective optimization of interventions on the network is presented to find trade-off solutions between costs and efficiency. In the second topic, methodologies are presented to simulate and predict demand and to simulate network behavior in emergency scenarios. In the third topic, a methodology is presented for the multi-objective optimization of pump-as-turbine (PAT) installation sites in transmission mains. In the fourth topic, methodologies for pipe burst identification and leakage reduction are presented. As for the urban drainage systems (UDSs), the two explored topics are asset management, with a system upgrade to reduce flooding, and modeling of flow and water quality, with analyses on the transition from surface to pressurized flow, impact of water use reduction on the operation of UDSs, and sediment transport in pressurized pipes. The Special Issue also includes one paper dealing with the hydraulic modeling of an urban river with a complex cross-section.
Environmental Energy Sustainability at Universities
The use of renewable energies and energy saving and efficiency are needs of global society and universities. Universities have a large responsibility and social impact, as they are an example and engine of social change. Universities, in the European context, must be at the forefront of ESA processes, seeking to be at the same level as, and preferably higher than, the rest of society, seeking a goal of 20% renewable energy for 2020 and, in the longer term, greater energy efficiency based on a diverse use of renewable energy and studying the feasibility of other energy processes (cogeneration, trigeneration, etc.). The application of renewable energies and energy efficiency allow universities to make significant savings in their costs and contribute to sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Actions in pursuit of these goals in addition to the objective of energy saving should promote research and form an example for the university community. This book aims to advance the contribution of energy saving and the use of renewable energies in order to achieve more sustainable universities.

Steady State and Time Dependent Compressed Air Energy Storage Model Validated with Huntorf Operational Data and Investigation of Hydrogen Options for a Sustainable Energy Supply
Wind power and photovoltaic energy play a significant role in sustainable energy systems. However, these two renewable energy sources do not generate electrical energy on demand and are subject to natural fluctuations. Thus, the need for compensatory measures arises. Compressed air energy storage power plants (CAES) are a possible solution to providing negative and positive control energy in the electric grid. However, in contrast to other energy storage devices such as pumped hydro energy storage or batteries, the storage medium compressed air hardly contains any energy (or more precisely: enthalpy). Yet, compressed air storage allows the operation of highly efficient gas turbines, which are not only particularly fast available but also achieve better efficiency than combined cycle power plants used today, as illustrated by the example of the modern gas and steam power plant Irsching with ηtc = 60%from 2011 compared to the 20 years older McIntosh CAES with ηtc = 82.4 %. In this thesis, the calculation methods for the thermodynamics of the CAES process are presented and validated by measured data from the operations of the CAES power plant Huntorf. Both the steady state and the dynamic (time-dependent) analyses of the process take place. The characteristic value efficiency is discussed in detail, since numerous different interpretations for CAES exist in the literature. A new calculation method for the electric energy storage efficiency is presented, and a method for the calculation of an economically equivalent electricity storage efficiency is developed. Consideration is given to the transformation of the CAES process into a hydrogen-driven and, thus, greenhouse gas-free process. Finally, a model CAES system is tested in a 100 % renewable model environment. Design of Heat Exchangers for Heat Pump Applications
Heat pumps (HPs) allow for providing heat without direct combustion, in both civil and industrial applications. They are very efficient systems that, by exploiting electrical energy, greatly reduce local environmental pollution and CO2 global emissions. The fact that electricity is a partially renewable resource and because the coefficient of performance (COP) can be as high as four or more, means that HPs can be nearly carbon neutral for a full sustainable future. The proper selection of the heat source and the correct design of the heat exchangers is crucial for attaining high HP efficiencies. Heat exchangers (also in terms of HP control strategies) are hence one of the main elements of HPs, and improving their performance enhances the effectiveness of the whole system. Both the heat transfer and pressure drop have to be taken into account for the correct sizing, especially in the case of mini- and micro-geometries, for which traditional models and correlations can not be applied. New models and measurements are required for best HPs system design, including optimization strategies for energy exploitation, temperature control, and mechanical reliability. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach of the analysis is requested and become the future challenge.

Life Cycle & Technoeconomic Modeling
This book aims to perform an impartial analysis to evaluate the implications of the environmental costs and impacts of a wide range of technologies and energy strategies. This information is intended to be used to support decision-making by groups, including researchers, industry, regulators, and policy-makers. Life cycle assessment (LCA) and technoeconomic analysis can be applied to a wide variety of technologies and energy strategies, both established and emerging. LCA is a method used to evaluate the possible environmental impacts of a product, material, process, or activity. Corrosion Behavior of Austenitic Stainless Steels in CO2-Saturated Synthetic Oil Field Formation Water
The corrosion behavior of austenitic and superaustenitic stainless steels was investigated in carbon dioxide-saturated synthetic oil field formation water using cyclic polarization tests. In order to measure the effect of carbon dioxide pressure, the samples were also exposed in a pressurized medium containing carbon dioxide and synthetic air. For this purpose, tests were performed for long exposure time at 80 簞C under 8 MPa of a mixture of carbon dioxide and synthetic air both acting together. The results indicated that the type of corrosion on the surfaces of the samples after all the tests was pitting corrosion. According to the results, the AL-6XNPLUS(TM) steel presented the best performance in all experiments. The results also indicated that the conventional austenitic stainless steels are not suitable for the use in carbon dioxide containing environment in aqueous medium.
Real-time Filtering of Physiological Tremor for Microsurgery. Physiological Tremor Robotic Compensation

This dissertation mainly focused on developing new algorithms and techniques for accurate modeling and prediction of physiological tremor components ( the filtering and modeling system) for the hand-held instruments. The methods developed in the course of this dissertation were validated with the physiological tremor database collected from micro-surgeons and novice subjects. Further, the methods were experimentally validated with the bench tests conducted on hand-held instrument, iTrem. Precision, robustness, dexterity, and intelligence are the design indices for current generation surgical robotics. In microsurgeries, physiological tremor - an intrinsic hand motion with amplitude of 100繕m - is a major impediment for surgeons' to perform delicate and fine motor tasks in sub-millimeter space. To augment the required precision and dexterity into normal microsurgical workflow by compensating the tremor in real-time, hand-held robotic instruments are developed. The working principle of a typical handheld instrument involves subsequent execution of three steps 1) sensing its own motion with inertial sensors, 2) filtering the involuntary motion from the sensed motion, and 3) actuate the surgical end-effectors (instrument tip) based on the filtered involuntary motions to compensate the tremor motion. Generally, digital filters are employed to filter out the noise components and subsequently extract the tremor motion from the whole motion. As a result, a time-varying and unknown delay in the range of 20 to 200ms (depends on the variant of the filter) is introduced into the tremor compensation proceedings, which in turn, adversely affects the tremor compensation performance. Aus den Spannungs-Dehnungslinien von kraftgeregelten Druckschwellversuchen lassen sich die Dissipationsenergiewerte bestimmen. Diese Dissipationsenergie ist f羹r die Erw瓣rmung der Probek繹rper infolge der zyklisch-mechanischen Beanspruchung verantwortlich. Auf Basis der festgestellten Korrelation zwischen der Probek繹rpererw瓣rmung und der Sch瓣digungsentwicklung wird nun die direkte Korrelation zwischen der Dissipationsenergie und der Rissentwicklung untersucht. Es zeigt sich, dass sich die Verl瓣ufe der mit jedem Lastwechsel dissipierten Energie analog zu den bereits bekannten Verl瓣ufen anderer Messparameter und Sch瓣digungsindikatoren in drei Phasen aufteilen lassen. Aus der Auswertung der bis zum Versagen eines Probek繹rpers kumulierten Dissipationsenergie resultiert ein funktionaler Zusammenhang zur jeweiligen Bruchlastwechselzahl. S瓣mtliche Auswertungspunkte, die durch die Bruchlastwechselzahlen und den bis zum jeweiligen Versagen kumulierten Dissipationsenergiewerten beschrieben werden, liegen auf einer Kurve, die als Versagenskurve bezeichnet wird. Energy profiles for Kyrgyz mountain villages as a basis for a targeted energy strategy

Despite this, 1.2 billion people had no access to electricity and 2.8 billion people relied on traditional biomass for cooking and heating in 2016 according to the International Energy Agency. One of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals states that by 2030 everyone should have access to clean, sustainable energy. In light of this, the aim of this project was to design a methodological approach to appraise the energy situation in a Kyrgyz mountain village in order to make it possible for that village to work towards the energy targets of the Sustainable Development Goals in a clear, focused way. To do this, two surveys - a questionnaire and an observational survey - were developed that included all energy related topics such as reliability, affordability, availability, quality and cleanness of energy as well as energy efficiency, and percentage of renewable energies. The advantage of these surveys as a profiling method is that it is able to be used across a wide range of landscapes, energy situations and demographics. With it a clear picture can be painted as to what the energy situation is and what steps would have to be taken to ameliorate the situation. The surveys were tested in a pilot run in a village called Jergetal, where the researchers spent ten days interviewing 16 households and taking notes and pictures on the state of the buildings and any energy efficiency measures or renewable energy technology. The survey results showed that while all the households had access to electricity, the heating and cooking was mainly done with fire fueled by coal and dung bricks. The houses were not insulated and no renewable energies were being used. The main reasons for this was lack of information and lack of funds.

Despite a well-developed mathematical theory and available commercial software codes, the computation of solutions of the governing equations of motion is still challenging, especially due to the nonlinearity involved, and there are still open questions regarding the underlying physics of fluid flow, especially with respect to the continuum hypothesis and thermodynamic local equilibrium. The aim of this book is to reference recent advances in the field of fluid mechanics, both in terms of developing sophisticated mathematical methods for finding solutions to the equations of motion, on the one hand, and presenting novel approaches to the physical modeling, on the other hand. A wide range of topics is addressed, including general topics like formulations of the equations of motion in terms of conventional and potential fields; variational formulations, both deterministic and statistic, and their application to channel flows; vortex dynamics; flows through porous media; and also acoustic waves through porous media

Speziell auf das immissionsschutzrechtliche Genehmigungsverfahren und die privilegierte Zul瓣ssigkeit im Au?enbereich am Beispiel des Energiehofs Herlazhofen. In den letzten Jahren stieg die Anzahl der errichteten Biogasanlagen sehr stark an, da durch das Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz die Verg羹tungss瓣tze f羹r den Biogas-Strom festgelegt wurden. Zudem wurde die Privilegierung von relativ kleinen Biogasanlagen im BauGB eingef羹gt. Dies bedeutet f羹r einige Landwirte eine 瓣u?erst lukrative Einnahmequelle. Allerdings m羹ssen sich die Betreiber solcher Biogasanlagen mit einer Vielzahl von gesetzlichen Bestimmungen auseinandersetzten, die sowohl die Zulassung als auch den Betrieb der Anlage regeln.

Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei allerdings darauf, wie man die Adipositas durch Interventionen, auch im Alltag, vorbeugen kann. Dazu wird auch das Pr瓣ventionspotential untersucht, um die Dringlichkeit der Pr瓣vention darzustellen. Die Adipositas, im Volksmund h瓣ufig besser als Fettleibigkeit, Fettsucht oder krankhaftes ?bergewicht bekannt, beschreibt einen Zustand, indem der K繹rperfettanteil gemessen an der Gesamtk繹rpermasse f羹r das Alter und Geschlecht pathologisch, also gesundheitsgef瓣hrdend erh繹ht ist. Die Gr羹nde f羹r eine Adipositas k繹nnen vielf瓣ltig sein, am h瓣ufigsten ist jedoch eine 羹ber einen l瓣ngeren Zeitraum hinweg positive Energiebilanz, was so viel bedeutet, dass zu viel Energie zum Beispiel in Form von Nahrung aufgenommen wird, dies jedoch nicht in ausreichendem Umfang durch Grundumsatz, Thermogenese und Aktivit瓣t verbraucht wird. Dies wiederum f羹hrt zu der Anlagerung von Fettgewebe im K繹rper.
Electromagnetic Waves and Heat Transfer
Electromagnetic waves generate radiation energy, and they play very significant roles in our lives. Electromagnetic waves are studied in almost every scientific field from astronomy, agriculture, chemistry, medicine to physics. This book focuses on heat transfer aspects of electromagnetic waves. There are twenty-four chapters in this book with their solutions to heat transfer from electromagnetic waves' radiation energy with different uses and problems related to our lives. Each problem solution also investigates the sensitivity of criticalindependent variables to governing dependent variables.In this book effects of electromagnetic waves that play significant roles in ourlives through radiation heat transfer are investigated in twenty-four chapters. Advancements in Catalytic Conversion of Biomass into Biofuels and Chemicals
Numerous efforts have been devoted to using biomass as a feedstock for the production of bio-based materials, biochemicals, and biofuels that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on conventional fossil resources. Conversion strategies for the production of platform chemicals, building blocks, fine chemicals, and biofuels include a wide range of processes such as chemical and mechanical pretreatment for improved carbohydrate production, fractionation of biomass into carbohydrates and lignin and their further conversions, microbial and enzymatic conversion of biomass into valuable products, and direct catalytic conversion of biomass or its components into chemicals and fuels. This Special Issue introduces recent innovative research results in the area of bioenergy and value-added chemicals from various feedstocks through chemical and biological catalytic processes.

Fracture and Fatigue Assessments of Structural Components
In dealing with fracture and fatigue assessments of structural components, different approaches have been proposed in the literature. They are usually divided into three subgroups according to stress-based, strain-based, and energy-based criteria. Typical applications include both linear elastic and elastoplastic materials and plain and notched or cracked components under both static and fatigue loadings. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide an update to the state-of-the-art on these approaches. The topics addressed in this Special Issue are applications from nano- to full-scale complex and real structures and recent advanced criteria for fracture and fatigue predictions under complex loading conditions, such as multiaxial constant and variable amplitude fatigue loadings.
Nondestructive Testing in Composite Materials
In this era of technological progress and given the need for welfare and safety, everything that is manufactured and maintained must comply with such needs. We would all like to live in a safe house that will not collapse on us. We would all like to walk on a safe road and never see a chasm open in front of us. We would all like to cross a bridge and reach the other side safely. We all would like to feel safe and secure when taking a plane, ship, train, or using any equipment. All this may be possible with the adoption of adequate manufacturing processes, with non-destructive inspection of final parts and monitoring during the in-service life of components. Above all, maintenance should be imperative. This requires effective non-destructive testing techniques and procedures. This Special Issue is a collection of some of the latest research in these areas, aiming to highlight new ideas and ways to deal with challenging issues worldwide. Different types of materials and structures are considered, different non-destructive testing techniques are employed with new approaches for data treatment proposed as well as numerical simulations.
