Enhancement of flat flabs’ shear resistance using gabion mesh
Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: very good, Mekelle University (Ethiopian Institute of Technology), course: Msc in structural engineering, language: English, abstract: This thesis presents study of punching shear capacity of flat slab-column junctions. A three dimensional nonlinear finite element program based on 8 node solid elements was used to carry out the nonlinear analysis of flat-slab models with and without gabion-mesh. The effect of gabion arrangements for punching and the ultimate load prediction for each was presented in this thesis. The results obtained from abaqus were compared to code prediction results, and the failure mode also compared to experimental and code predicted failure modes. The predicted mode of failure and other responses are in a good correlation to euro code predicted values. In addition to punching gabion has greater resistance to flexure by increasing the stiffness of the slab. Finally it is concluded that using hexagonal gabion mesh at tension part is easy, effective and can solve construction difficulty of drop panels and one layer gabion can reduce 10mm of slab thickness. Punching strength is a critical point in the design of flat slabs and due to the lack of a theoretical method capable of explaining this phenomenon, empirical formulations presented by codes of practice are still the most used method to check the punching resistance of slab-column connections. Flat slab is a reinforced concrete slab supported directly by concrete columns without the use of beams. This type of slab is appropriate for most floor situations and also for irregular column layouts. Because of its aesthetic view, simplicity for construction, reduction of foundation cost, this becomes very common and competitive structural system for cast-in-place slabs in buildings. Supply Chain Management for Bioenergy and Bioresources
In the modern world, the competitiveness of bioenergy- and/or bioresources-related activities heavily depends on the effectiveness of supply chain management. A large number of multidisciplinary topics are involved in the bioresources and bioenergy production fields. Although the technical issues that are related with the topic are well-discussed and do not represent major barriers, supply chain management issues, such as design of the network, collection, storage or transportation of bioresources, are still considered as fundamental questions that need to be answered to enable the optimal exploitation of bioenergy and bioresources. Moreover, modeling of material and energy flows; identification of the dynamic character of the supply chains; available reverse logistics (waste management) alternatives; economic, social and environmental sustainability of bioresource supply chains; novelty in the applied business models; and decision support frameworks towards efficient supply chain management for bioenergy and bioresources present critical operational sustainability issues and business-making potential. Data Mining in Smart Grids
Effective smart grid operation requires rapid decisions in a data-rich, but information-limited, environment. In this context, grid sensor data-streaming cannot provide the system operators with the necessary information to act on in the time frames necessary to minimize the impact of the disturbances. Even if there are fast models that can convert the data into information, the smart grid operator must deal with the challenge of not having a full understanding of the context of the information, and, therefore, the information content cannot be used with any high degree of confidence. To address this issue, data mining has been recognized as the most promising enabling technology for improving decision-making processes, providing the right information at the right moment to the right decision-maker. This Special Issue is focused on emerging methodologies for data mining in smart grids. In this area, it addresses many relevant topics, ranging from methods for uncertainty management, to advanced dispatching. Sustainability in the Development of Water Systems Management
The concept of sustainability has been intensively used over the last decades since Brundtland織s report was published in 1987. This concept, due to its transversal, horizontal and interdisciplinary nature, can be used in many disciplines, scenarios, spatio-temporal dimensions and different circumstances. The intensive development in recent years of analytical techniques and tools based on disciplines such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, information theory and the Internet of Things, among others, has meant we are very well-placed for analysing the sustainability of water systems in a multiperspective way. Water systems management requires the most advanced approaches and tools for rigorously addressing all the dimensions involved in the sustainability of its development. Consequently, addressing the sustainability of water systems management may comprise physical (natural processes), chemical, socioeconomic, legal, institutional, infrastructure (engineering), political and cultural aspects, among others. In this content, Failure Modes & Effect Analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process approach is used for prioritizing the risk of failure in turbine auxiliaries of Power Plant.The outcome from the FMEA & AHP analysis are compared and found that turbine bearing temperature in the Turbine auxillary is very severe in risk. The results are almost same for both the analysis of AHP & FMEA. Also after focusing on the problems identified in the plant by the professionals, maintenance & replacements of the machinery has been proposed, which will result in improvement in efficiency of the plant. Recent Advances in the Assessment of Flood Risk in Urban Areas
The adverse effects of flood disasters in urban areas have been increasing in severity and extent over the past years. The amount of loss resulting from these events is also increasing exponentially, particularly in highly urbanised urban areas, where the effects of intensive land use and climate change are particularly extreme-all despite that our scientific knowledge, technical competence, and computational capacity to develop highly sophisticated and accurate forecasting and simulation models are higher than ever, as is our capacity to map and analyse flood-related data. In order to tackle this global issue, it is fundamental to keep on promoting and developing fundamental and applied research that allows the better targeting of interventions to improve resilience, reduce vulnerability, and enhance recovery as well as assisting decision-makers in delivering more effective flood risk-reduction policies. Development of Sustainable Energy
The book begins with an investigation of improved diesel generator flexibility and coordination via low-load diesel applications. Case studies for Australia and Hawaii are presented to conclude that low-load diesel is a natural precursor to storage due to its accessibility and also benefits low and high-penetration isolated power systems. The book continues with Structural Equation Modelling of building occupants attitude, knowledge and behaviour to propose the inclusion of motivational factors in a Building Occupant Environmental Behaviour model for sustainable building energy performance. The following section presents an analysis of different levels of renewable energy integration and energy storage to suggest the most suitable in terms of the reduction of CO2 emissions and expected earnings from a lower LCOE. Further on, a proof-of-concept heat pipe technology for passive cooling to improve the performance of photovoltaic panels in the hot climate of Oman is presented using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The application of an uncontrolled diode rectifier-high voltage direct current transmission system for the Jeju Island power system with an off-shore new wind farm is simulated to demonstrate cost reduction and increased reliability and stability. The book concludes with view factor computations of bifacial solar photovoltaic based on the finite element method using two programming languages to demonstrate that Python offers a better platform than Microsoft Excel-Visual Basic for Applications where computation time is a significant modelling challenge.

Die qualitativen Aussagen lassen sich jedoch ebenso auf andere gentechnische ver瓣nderte Pflanzen 羹bertragen. Das Hauptziel der Arbeit ist die Schaffung einer Wissensbasis zum Anbau von Genmais und die Beantwortung der Leitfrage, ob Genmais ein "riskantes Spiel mit der Natur" ist. Daraus ergeben sich die Teilziele, wie die detaillierte Darstellung der Verteilung von Mais bzgl. dem Anbau, Transport und Verbrauch. Zudem gilt es zu untersuchen, wo transgener Mais gepflanzt wird und wie hoch der Anteil an genetisch modifizierten Maissorten ist. Die gr繹?ten Wirtschaftsunternehmen mit dem Gesch瓣ftsprodukt "genetisch modifizierter Mais" und deren Hauptniederlassungen werden aufgezeigt. Daraufhin wird auf L瓣nder eingegangen, die vorrangig Genmaissamen und daraus entstehende Genmaisprodukte als Nahrungsmittel bzw. andere Folgeprodukte erwerben und nutzen, und es werden Auswirkungen auf die Erwerberl瓣nder aufgezeigt. Ein weiteres Teilziel ist die Untersuchung von Risikopr羹fungen bzw. konkretem Risikomanagement und Monitoring zur Risikovorsorge von gentechnisch modifizierten Maisanbau.
Wearable Sensors in the Evaluation of Gait and Balance in Neurological Disorders
The aging population and the increased prevalence of neurological diseases have raised the issue of gait and balance disorders as a major public concern worldwide. Indeed, gait and balance disorders are responsible for a high healthcare and economic burden on society, thus, requiring new solutions to prevent harmful consequences. Recently, wearable sensors have provided new challenges and opportunities to address this issue through innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Accordingly, the book "Wearable Sensors in the Evaluation of Gait and Balance in Neurological Disorders" collects the most up-to-date information about the objective evaluation of gait and balance disorders, by means of wearable biosensors, in patients with various types of neurological diseases, including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and cerebellar ataxia. A proposed Web Indexing Model Based on Metadata
The World Wide Web contains large volumes of Web pages that are poorly characterized in terms of both metadata and structure descriptions. Metadata is the data that describe data, for Web pages, it may provide a significant amount of information about the Web without examining its content and serves a variety of purposes. At the other side, the search engine needs to scrape all Web pages of the target Website, when a new Web page is first available, it will typically take several days-for the page to be detected and indexed by the search engine. Until a page has been indexed, the users cannot find information about it on search engine results. This represents a time and resource-consuming operation and heavy network bandwidth consumption involved with the retrieval of the mark-up code of these Web pages which finally affects the users by increasing the time taken for new content or a content modification to be reflected in the search engines results. For instance, Web-related metadata can improve search efficiency and the quality of the search results. This thesis proposes an approach called Multilateral Web Indexing Model (MWIM), which aims to describe a solution to the previous.

Together, these three key aspects make up the composite index for the world university research rankings methodology.The aim of this evidence-based new index is to inform universities objectively on their world research standing; provide insights into their relative strengths and weaknesses; raise awareness and promote collaborative and multi-disciplinary research. The indicators that were chosen reflect this aspirational goal to help universities better understand how they can seize opportunities in this increasingly complex and inter-connected world, and relook at how universities' research excellence can be assessed holistically with respect to how they are able to harness the synergies created from bringing together multi-disciplinary and collaborative teams to sustain and elevate research impact.This new index is designed through a novel and fresh methodology from the existing ones (i.e. QS, THE, ARWU) to evaluate the three key components - research multi-disciplinarity, research impact, and research collaborative-ness. Together, these form a new and differentiated composite index under this research assessment framework for universities. Data is derived objectively based on OECD's schema in Web of Science's InCites through a 10-year period from 2009 to 2018.

Reliability analysis of power systems with variable renewable resources

Three operating concepts of the wind energy conversion systems (WECS) are considered based on the acceptable speed range of generators, while seven practical layouts of large-scale grid-connected systems are considered for the solar-PV systems. Elaborated RAM analysis of each system associated with each operating concept for the WECS and each layout of the solar-PV systems is presented starting from the subassemblies level to the subsystem level then the overall system. This thesis is purposed to describe the method of reliability, availability, and maintainability analysis of repairable and non-repairable systems using the exponential PDFs. It is also aimed to explore the method for improving the availability of these systems by managing the effort using availability importance measures of each subassembly. This analysis will also be utilized to studying the criticality of the subassemblies or subsystems of the system in order to continuous improvement. After doing this, this thesis also extends to look into the overall system availability. This analysis is a good tool for helping to identify the critical subsystems or subassemblies of the system that need more attention for improvement.
Remote Sensing in Coastline Detection
Coastal environments are dynamic ecosystems, where erosion is influenced by meteorological/climatic, geological, biological, and anthropic factors. Erosion has worrying effects on the environment, infrastructure, lifelines, and buildings. Furthermore, climate change is exacerbating an already fragile situation. We are witnessing a high-risk situation and are convinced that this is the most appropriate time to focus on state-of-the-art remote sensing techniques for shoreline monitoring. The improvements in the spatial and spectral resolution of current and next generation satellite-based sensors and the significant progress in the spatial data processing identify remote sensing techniques that increase our knowledge of territory and coastline. This Special Issue aims to highlight an overview of all multiscale remote sensing techniques (e.g., high resolution images, photogrammetry, SAR, etc.) and a whole array of methods and techniques that process, analyse, and discuss multitemporal remotely sensed data. Recent Advancement of Thermal Fluid Engineering in the Supercritical CO2 Power Cycle
This Special Issue is a compilation of the recent advances in thermal fluid engineering related to supercritical CO2 power cycle development. The supercritical CO2 power cycle is considered to be one of the most promising power cycles for distributed power generation, waste heat recovery, and a topping cycle of coal, nuclear, and solar thermal heat sources. While the cycle benefits from dramatic changes in CO2 thermodynamic properties near the critical point, design, and analysis of the power cycle and its major components also face certain challenges due to the strong real gas effect and extreme operating conditions. This Special Issue will present a series of recent research results in heat transfer and fluid flow analyses and experimentation so that the accumulated knowledge can accelerate the development of this exciting future power cycle technology.
