Evolutionary Computation & Swarm Intelligence
The vast majority of real-world problems can be expressed as an optimisation task by formulating an objective function, also known as cost or fitness function. The most logical methods to optimise such a function when (1) an analytical expression is not available, (2) mathematical hypotheses do not hold, and (3) the dimensionality of the problem or stringent real-time requirements make it infeasible to find an exact solution mathematically are from the field of Evolutionary Computation (EC) and Swarm Intelligence (SI). The latter are broad and still growing subjects in Computer Science in the study of metaheuristic approaches, i.e., those approaches which do not make any assumptions about the problem function, inspired from natural phenomena such as, in the first place, the evolution process and the collaborative behaviours of groups of animals and communities, respectively. This book contains recent advances in the EC and SI fields, covering most themes currently receiving a great deal of attention such as benchmarking and tunning of optimisation algorithms, their algorithm design process, and their application to solve challenging real-world problems to face large-scale domains.

Mathematical Foundations of System Safety Engineering
This graduate-level textbook elucidates low-risk and fail-safe systems in mathematical detail. It addresses, in particular, problems where mission-critical performance is paramount, such as in aircraft, missiles, nuclear reactors and weapons, submarines, and many other types of systems where "failure" can result in overwhelming loss of life and property. The book is divided into four parts: Fundamentals, Electronics, Software, and Dangerous Goods. The first part on Fundamentals addresses general concepts of system safety engineering that are applicable to any type of system. The second part, Electronics, addresses the detection and correction of electronic hazards. In particular, the Bent Pin Problem, Sneak Circuit Problem, and related electrical problems are discussed with mathematical precision. The third part on Software addresses predicting software failure rates as well as detecting and correcting deep software logical flaws (called defects). Thefourth part on Dangerous Goods presents solutions to three typical industrial chemical problems faced by the system safety engineer during the design, storage, and disposal phases of a dangerous goods' life cycle.
New Ways of Dealing With Soil in Constructions? Soil Stabilization Using Brick, Dust and Cement
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Geotechnology, grade: A, language: English, abstract: The nature of soil is an ambiguous property unlike it is treated to know the basic engineering parameters. Usually, soil and soft soils cause difficulties in construction site when having low strength and low stiffness. To enhance the engineering property, soil needs to be stabilized. This study is an experimental base research where brick dust and cement are used to stabilize the soil to explore the more uses of raw materials like this as well as to improve the quality of soft soil at the proposed site of Manikdi, Dhaka. The soil is classified as a clayey soil and determined the plastic limit, liquid limit, specific gravity, grain size. Secondly, to compare the strength and characteristics of existing soil before and after treating with the combination of brick dust and cement. We used two different mixed ratio and natural soil to conduct this experiment. From unconfined compression strength test of natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 483.7 kPa, 737.2 kPa and 967.8 kPa consequently. So, we found that the stress is increasing with increasing amount of cement and brick dust. From The grain size analysis, the Cu value of natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 4.3, 5.06 and 3.25 consequently. Also we found that the Cc value of natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 0.84, 0.879 and 0.83 consequently. So for this three cases the soil sample was poorly graded. From the Atterberg limit test the liquid limit for natural soil, soil with mix ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:1.5:7) and soil with mixed ratio (Cement: Brick Dust: Soil=1:2:7) were 36.07%, 34.63% and 33.17% conseq
The Engineers Act of Kenya 2011. A regulatory analysis of the impact on institutional structures
Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - General, Basics, Mount Kenya University, course: Law, language: English, abstract: The objectives of this paper are to: evaluate the regulatory objectives of the EBK; explain the significance of the EBK in the realization of the national and international development goals (government's constitutional obligations, Vision 2030, Big $ Agenda SDGs etc.); examine the extent to which institutional structures of the EBK positively/negatively contribute to the fulfilment of its mandate; examine how EBK's legal mandate overlaps with other institutions and what challenges or strengths this poses for the fulfilment of its regulatory objectives; identify the challenges facing the EBK and the necessary regulatory adjustments necessary in view of the regulatory objectives identified in 1 and 2; provide a way forward based on a determination of whether the challenges identified emerge from the EBK's institutional, statutory, or regulatory structure. Developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) is a process of systematically identifying and assessing the potential (ex-ante stage) or already created (ex-post stage) consequences - benefits, costs and effects - of a policy or a regulation. Using RIA, one can conduct a systemic analysis of the possible changes that result from the adoption of normative legal acts. RIA aims to support the decision-making process regarding the fate of a new or existing regulation, its positive and negative effects, and whether the regulation is likely to achieve the desired objectives. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to the application of RIA. The same is also relevant for a RIA methodology. Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) is one methodology that has been applied successfully but the complexity of the methodology varies across countries and even within countries. Other methodologies include comparing positive and ne
Multi-Agent Energy Systems Simulation
The synergy between artificial intelligence and power and energy systems is providing promising solutions to deal with the increasing complexity of the energy sector. Multi-agent systems, in particular, are widely used to simulate complex problems in the power and energy domain as they enable modeling dynamic environments and studying the interactions between the involved players. Multi-agent systems are suitable for dealing not only with problems related to the upper levels of the system, such as the transmission grid and wholesale electricity markets, but also to address challenges associated with the management of distributed generation, renewables, large-scale integration of electric vehicles, and consumption flexibility. Agent-based approaches are also being increasingly used for control and to combine simulation and emulation by enabling modeling of the details of buildings' electrical devices, microgrids, and smart grid components. This book discusses and highlights the latest advances and trends in multi-agent energy systems simulation. The addressed application topics include the design, modeling, and simulation of electricity markets operation, the management and scheduling of energy resources, the definition of dynamic energy tariffs for consumption and electrical vehicles charging, the large-scale integration of variable renewable energy sources, and mitigation of the associated power network issues.
Impacts of Landscape Change on Water Resources
Changes in land use and land cover can have many drivers, including population growth, urbanization, agriculture, demand for food, evolution of socio-economic structure, policy regulations, and climate variability. The impacts of these changes on water resources range from changes in water availability (due to changes in losses of water to evapotranspiration and recharge) to degradation of water quality (increased erosion, salinity, chemical loadings, and pathogens). The impacts are manifested through complex hydro-bio-geo-climate characteristics, which underscore the need for integrated scientific approaches to understand the impacts of landscape change on water resources. Several techniques, such as field studies, long-term monitoring, remote sensing technologies, and advanced modeling studies, have contributed to better understanding the modes and mechanisms by which landscape changes impact water resources. Such research studies can help unlock the complex interconnected influences of landscape on water resources in terms of quantity and quality at multiple spatial and temporal scales. In this Special Issue, we published a set of eight peer-reviewed articles elaborating on some of the specific topics of landscape changes and associated impacts on water resources.
Analysis of Distributed Solar Photovoltaic System Harmonics on Transformers
A surge in harmonics and distortion in the South Africa's electric power system has come to the fore in the early phases of integrating renewable energy resources to the national electric grid. Having said that, in this day and age a considerable number of harmonic producing apparatus are present. On the basis of their beneficial effects in efficacy and controllability, harmonic producing apparatus are presumed looking ahead to the realization of the 2030 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2030) to increase further. The mushroomed harmonics and distortion may drive inflated winding stray losses and many other transformer aspects covered in this book including maximum loading capacity, De-rating, peculiar temperature rise, stray gassing and Total Ownership Cost.

Battery Management System for Future Electric Vehicles
The future of electric vehicles relies nearly entirely on the design, monitoring, and control of the vehicle battery and its associated systems. Along with an initial optimal design of the cell/pack-level structure, the runtime performance of the battery needs to be continuously monitored and optimized for a safe and reliable operation and prolonged life. Improved charging techniques need to be developed to protect and preserve the battery. The scope of this Special Issue is to address all the above issues by promoting innovative design concepts, modeling and state estimation techniques, charging/discharging management, and hybridization with other storage components.

Lorado
The Lorado deposit was discovered in 1950 in a remote location in northern Saskatchewan, and just north of Lake Athabasca. Subsequent exploration and development led to a mine, mill, and associated campsites being built, all of which were fully operational by 1957. The Lorado mill was unique, having been designed to process ores from smaller, neighbouring mines that would otherwise not have succeeded. This made Lorado the third largest producer of uranium (yellowcake) concentrate in Saskatchewan and one of the top five in Canada during the Cold War era. By 1960 the markets for uranium had crashed and operations were closed but, having produced about 1,210 tonnes of uranium concentrate, Lorado had played a significant role in helping Canada become one of the largest uranium producers in the world. Beyond uranium, the Lorado mine produced about 500,000 m3 of highly acidic tailings, which entered nearby Nero Lake virtually destroying it. Following closure in 1960, the Lorado site stood abandoned for the next twenty years, until the site owners cleaned up most of the mine infrastructure in 1982, and the mill buildings in 1990. Another sixteen years would pass before the government of Saskatchewan stepped in and contracted the management of the rest of the remediation to the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC). At the time of writing this book essentially all of the Lorado sites' remediation had been completed, with active monitoring in progress subsequent to ultimately releasing them into a long-term management and monitoring program.
Additive Fertigungsverfahren. Selektives Lasersintern, Fused Deposition Modeling, Electron Beam Melting, Stereolithografie, Polygrafie, Schicht-Laminat-Verfahren
Second Generation Differential Current Conveyor (DCCII) and its Applications
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: 10, language: English, abstract: By considering the advantages offering in CM circuits and to meet the need for generating square wave generator circuit and all pass filter circuits in most electronic appliances, some new square wave generators and all pass filter circuits are proposed in this thesis. In the thesis, new all-pass filters with the DCCII as the main active device are proposed. The proposed circuits consist of two resistors and two capacitors, including one grounded capacitor, suitable for tuning. In literature, it is widely accepted that use of grounded capacitors makes the designs suitable for integrated circuit (IC) realisation. Grounded IC capacitors have less parasitics compared to floating counterparts, which is important from the performance point of view and to avoid noise effects.
Unsettled Issues Concerning the Opportunities and Challenges of eVTOL Applications during a Global Pandemic
Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft technology has developed beyond the traditional aviation industry and now influences the creation of new and novel transportation applications. Some experts even suggest on-demand eVTOL logistics capabilities could be harnessed by crisis response teams to c ombat a future pandemic. The lessons of the COVID-19 crisis highlighted the challenges of managing a global pandemic response due to the difference in regional and local resources, culture, and political systems. Although there may not be a uniform crisis management strategy that the world can agree on, next-generation vertical flight vehicles could be used to distribute limited medical equipment, supplies, and personnel to hot spots faster than conventional aircraft or ground vehicles. However, creating this capability is not easy. This SAE EDGE(TM) Research Report by Johnny Doo addresses the opportunities and challenges of establishing an eVTOL fleet, including deployment, supporting infrastructure, and fleet management.

Validation of the Hi-sAFe and yield-safe models for simulation of Northern European alley cropping systems
Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: B, University of Copenhagen (Institute of Plant and Environmental Science (PLEN)), language: English, abstract: In this thesis, the Hi-sAFe and yield-safe are calibrated with data from two sets of alley cropping systems, one Danish and one English. Then, predictions of crop yields and tree growth for the growing systems are made with the models and compared to measured data. The quality of the model outputs is evaluated regarding accuracy, correlation to measurements, and bias, and the strengths, weaknesses and potentials of the models are described. Alley cropping is an agroforestry practice with considerable potentials of providing both environmental and economic benefits in Northern Europe. However, these potentials are rarely quantified, and the knowledge required to design new alley cropping systems is lacking. Computer simulation of alley cropping systems may provide solutions through estimation. The objective of this study is to validate the Hi-sAFe and yield-safe models regarding predictions of tree growth and crop yields in Northern European alley cropping systems. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food-sponsored alley cropping systems (MAFF-sponsored trials) and the Combined Food and Energy system, Copenhagen (CFEC) were used. For the MAFF-sponsored trials, data from one (Cirencester trial) out of three sites (Cirencester, Silsoe and Leeds trials) were used for calibration. For the CFEC, data for a subset (years 2012-2019) of the recorded period (2000-2019) was used for calibration. Then, validation simulations were run with the remaining data from each set. For the English growing systems, both models showed substantial error in crop yield predictions (r2 = 0.02-0.57), but successfully simulated tree growth (r2 = 0.94-1.00). In the Danish systems, yield-safe produced better predictions of crop yield (r2 = 0.01-0.35) than Hi-sAFe (r2 = 0.03-0.05), and none of th
Meteorological drought and flood scenarios over Kenya, East Africa
Kenya's economy and that of the Great Horn of Africa rely on rain-fed agriculture. Unfortunately, the country is prone to hydrological extremes, mainly drought and floods. The occurrence of drought/flood is associated with not only the destruction of property but with loss of lives. The situation is worsening under the observed reduction in seasonal rainfall and amplified global warming. Characterizing the recent evolution of climate extreme scenarios across localized domains remains an imperative process to adapt tailor suit innovative solutions to drought risks and their impacts. The purpose of this book is aimed at demonstrating the recent changes in droughts/pluvial events over Kenya for planning purposes. The first chapter describes the existing literature on the past work documenting historical occurrences of drought/flood over localized domains or the whole country. Chapter two presents the approaches used to examine the current drought/flood scenarios by illustrating the trend, intensity, severity, and frequency based on the Standardized Evapotranspiration Precipitation Index (SPEI). Chapter three describe the results derived from careful analysis of climate extremes most pronounced over the study region. Lastly, possible conclusions and recommendations are presented in the last chapter. The book is designed as an upper-level undergraduate, graduate, and research text.Authors: Ayugi Brian Odhiambo, Guirong Tan, Niu Ruoyun, Dong Zeyao, Moses Ojara, Lucia Mumo, Hassen Babaousmail, and Victor Ongoma.
World Peace - The Transition
Does anyone imagine that they will starve once food is grown and transported to your door automatically? And shelter, energy and incomes are guaranteed sustainably as well. Germany has the strongest economy per capita in the G8 with free education, healthcare, terrific wealth distribution and a very positive future. World Peace - The Transition, explains how we lost the American Dream in the G8 countries and then it explains how to put economic controls back in place to correct this. Manual economies must monetize and then distribute wealth in order to succeed, so at the same time that we repair our manual economy, #WPProjects coordinates the efforts of 200 countries worldwide to each build one just project in support of a fully automated, sustainable production economy. This creates a brand new export market that pays for safety nets that guarantee incomes, free education, healthcare, benefits, retirements and more. The driverless car took just two years to develop to an initial Pilot release that has now driven one million accident-free miles. Once we automate the basics of life and human rights, these automations can easily be scaled worldwide to the 80% of this planet that do not have these basics today - so that these people can participate in a new sustainable global prosperity and World Peace.Solutions suggested are taken from wide research in economics, engineering, history, business, technology, leadership, transformation (project management), and even philosophy, to create a simple straight-forward series of step-by-step instructions that lead society to a Good Life by a Right Plan (Aristotle's name for the American Dream) - scalably and reliably for seven billion people.World Peace can work because it has worked before; It will work because it is already started and is already stumbling along a winding path toward completion. This book introduces the new field of Transition Economics to explain the detail workings of safety nets, guaranteed incomes and retraining for displaced workers as needed to permit automation in support of higher productivity. In the end, as Aristotle put it, masters will no longer have need of slaves.CSQ Common Sense 101 introduced lessons that defined what are the basic building blocks of a worthwhile and sustainable society; a society in which a Good Life was possible. A Good Life is a life where basic human needs and human rights are met for all sustainably; a life where basic needs of food, clean water, family and family friendly communities, transportation, and energy are met by solutions in technology, transformation processes, and common sense. In this book, it is never enough to simply explain what are the goals; that builds little more than a vapid platitude. Rather, here, I explain specifically How to build the solutions as well - step-by-step as laid out in 19 of the 38 projects from the CSQ 100 Year Plan. Those projects needed to build a sustainable World Peace are called #WPProjects. We simply need to understand - "The Transition".To build this plan, we all need to unlearn a dozen well-intentioned bits of nonsense that we have all been conditioned to believe since childhood, such as systems of housing, government policy, Usury, monetary systems, tertiary Economies and the author leaves it to the reader to validate the supporting research of decisions made at every step as well.John F Kennedy, Hammurabi, Da Vinci, Aristotle, Queen Elizabeth I, Alan Turing and Gene Roddenberry, all contributed to this plan and I cannot hope to count all of the millions of Engineers and Team One and Team Two Builders among us who already have, and who will very soon, help to contribute to making this plan a reality.Get started today; table a #WPProjects 2016 Agenda at the United Nations, in your country, state, municipal councils, and business and academic boardrooms - and lets get building again!
Disrupting the Digital Humanities
All too often, defining a discipline becomes more an exercise of exclusion than inclusion. Disrupting the Digital Humanities seeks to rethink how we map disciplinary terrain by directly confronting the gatekeeping impulse of many other so-called field-defining collections. What is most beautiful about the work of the Digital Humanities is exactly the fact that it can't be tidily anthologized. In fact, the desire to neatly define the Digital Humanities (to filter the DH-y from the DH) is a way of excluding the radically diverse work that actually constitutes the field. This collection, then, works to push and prod at the edges of the Digital Humanities - to open the Digital Humanities rather than close it down. Ultimately, it's exactly the fringes, the outliers, that make the Digital Humanities both lovely and rigorous. This collection does not constitute yet another reservoir for the new Digital Humanities canon. Rather, our aim is less about assembling content as it is about creating new conversations. Building a truly communal space for the digital humanities requires that we all approach that space with a commitment to: 1) creating open and non-hierarchical dialogues; 2) championing non-traditional work that might not otherwise be recognized through conventional scholarly channels; 3) amplifying marginalized voices; 4) advocating for students and learners; and 5) sharing generously to support the work of our peers.TABLE OF CONTENTS //Cathy N. Multiscale Entropy Approaches and Their Applications
Multiscale entropy (MSE) measures to evaluate the complexity of time series by taking into account the multiple time scales in physical systems were proposed in the early 2000s. Since then, these approaches have received a great deal of attention and have been used in a wide range of applications. Multivariate approaches have also been developed. The algorithms for an MSE approach are composed of two main steps: (i) a coarse-graining procedure to represent the system's dynamics on different scales and (ii) the entropy computation for the original signal and for the coarse-grained time series to evaluate the irregularity for each scale. Moreover, different entropy measures have been associated with the coarse-graining approach, each one having its advantages and drawbacks. In this Special Issue, we gathered 24 papers focusing on either the theory or applications of MSE approaches. These papers can be divided into two groups: papers that propose new developments in entropy-based measures or improve the understanding of existing ones (9 papers) and papers that propose new applications of existing entropy-based measures (14 papers). Moreover, one paper presents a review of cross-entropy methods and their multiscale approaches.

Enhancing Farmers’ Livelihood Through Adoption of Conservation Agriculture
Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Agrarian Studies, Bangladesh Agricultural University, language: English, abstract: The research was conducted to evaluate the impact of practicing conservation agriculture on farmers' livelihood enhancement in two districts of Bangladesh. A total of 120 farmers (20 from focal and 100 from control group) were surveyed from Jamalpur and Bogra districts for collecting necessary data and information. An amalgam of descriptive statistics, mathematical and statistical analyses was used to analyze the data. Bangladesh is a role model for the United Nations to be showcased for its excellent development performance to developing nations. Agriculture is the heart of Bangladesh economy where more than 80% farmers are smallholder having land less than 1.0 hectare. The rural economy constitutes a significant component of the national GDP with agriculture (including crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry) accounting for 17.2%. In order to feed the increasing population of Bangladesh, 'Green Revolution' has emerged in the 1960s and priority was given to produce more food through intensification of land usage. As a result, immediate objectives of more crop production have been achieved and crop production has been increased by manifolds. For a shorter period, Bangladesh has attained self-sufficiency in food production. But long term use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides in conjunction with monoculture of cereal crops without any organic fertilizer result in lack of organic matter content that causes a lot of problems to the soil health. As a result, soil fertility and productivity is decreasing day by day. Since the average cropping intensity is 185% in Bangladesh (BBS, 2014), most farms manage about two (02) crops per year which are mainly rice or vegetables. Soil is interconnected with other natural resources such as air, water, fauna and flora. If the soil is well managed, the effects of agriculture on the environment w

Metal Micro-forming
The miniaturization of industrial products is a global trend. Metal forming technology is not only suitable for mass production and excellent in productivity and cost reduction, but it is also a key processing method that is essential for products that utilize advantage of the mechanical and functional properties of metals. However, it is not easy to realize the processing even if the conventional metal forming technology is directly scaled down. This is because the characteristics of materials, processing methods, die and tools, etc., vary greatly with miniaturization. In metal micro forming technology, the size effect of major issues for micro forming have also been clarified academically. New processing methods for metal micro forming have also been developed by introducing new special processing techniques, and it is a new wave of innovation toward high precision, high degree of processing, and high flexibility. To date, several special issues and books have been published on micro-forming technology. This book contains 11 of the latest research results on metal micro forming technology. The editor believes that it will be very useful for understanding the state-of-the-art of metal micro forming technology and for understanding future trends.

German Science in the Age of Empire
This seminal study explores the national, imperial and indigenous interests at stake in a major survey expedition undertaken by the German Schlagintweit brothers, while in the employ of the East India Company, through South and Central Asia in the 1850s. It argues that German scientists, lacking in this period a formal empire of their own, seized the opportunity presented by other imperial systems to observe, record, collect and loot manuscripts, maps, and museological artefacts that shaped European understandings of the East. Drawing on archival research in three continents, von Brescius vividly explores the dynamics and conflicts of transcultural exploration beyond colonial frontiers in Asia. Analysing the contested careers of these imperial outsiders, he reveals significant changes in the culture of gentlemanly science, the violent negotiation of scientific authority in a transnational arena, and the transition from Humboldtian enquiry to a new disciplinary order. This book offers a new understanding of German science and its role in shaping foreign empires, and provides a revisionist account of the questions of authority and of authenticity in reportage from distant sites.
Modelling, Simulation and Control of Thermal Energy Systems
Faced with an ever-growing resource scarcity and environmental regulations, the last 30 years have witnessed the rapid development of various renewable power sources, such as wind, tidal, and solar power generation. The variable and uncertain nature of these resources is well-known, while the utilization of power electronic converters presents new challenges for the stability of the power grid. Consequently, various control and operational strategies have been proposed and implemented by the industry and research community, with a growing requirement for flexibility and load regulation placed on conventional thermal power generation. Against this background, the modelling and control of conventional thermal engines, such as those based on diesel and gasoline, are experiencing serious obstacles when facing increasing environmental concerns. Efficient control that can fulfill the requirements of high efficiency, low pollution, and long durability is an emerging requirement. The modelling, simulation, and control of thermal energy systems are key to providing innovative and effective solutions. Through applying detailed dynamic modelling, a thorough understanding of the thermal conversion mechanism(s) can be achieved, based on which advanced control strategies can be designed to improve the performance of the thermal energy system, both in economic and environmental terms. Simulation studies and test beds are also of great significance for these research activities prior to proceeding to field tests. This Special Issue will contribute a practical and comprehensive forum for exchanging novel research ideas or empirical practices that bridge the modelling, simulation, and control of thermal energy systems. Papers that analyze particular aspects of thermal energy systems, involving, for example, conventional power plants, innovative thermal power generation, various thermal engines, thermal energy storage, and fundamental heat transfer management, on the basis of one or more of the following topics, are invited in this Special Issue: - Power plant modelling, simulation, and control; - Thermal engines; - Thermal energy control in building energy systems; - Combined heat and power (CHP) generation; - Thermal energy storage systems; - Improving thermal comfort technologies; - Optimization of complex thermal systems; - Modelling and control of thermal networks; - Thermal management of fuel cell systems; - Thermal control of solar utilization; - Heat pump control; - Heat exchanger control.

Advances in Direct Injection Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines
Reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICEs) are the most robust and efficient machines to cover ground and marine transport demands. Worldwide road transport and off-road power needs will continue being successfully satisfied by this type of thermofluid machines in the short- to mid-term. Alternatives are still immature to both effectively deal with global warming and offer the performance expected by customers. Governmental regulations are wisely limiting more and more greenhouse gases (CO2) and any harmful emissions; forcing engineering and scientific communities to push the efficiency and to reduce the pollution from RICEs, until they are eventually limited to below the background. This scenario has offered exciting opportunities in the last few years to engineers and researchers to investigate new ideas and technologies. The second revolution of the RICEs is here: Direct injection, multi-reactivity fuels, gases aftertreatment, and turbocharging are presently the baseline to further progress. These techniques are offering an extraordinarily high level of control of emissions in any operative condition. A change in paradigms is surprising the engineers with figures of efficiency overcoming the limits day after day. This book compiles a selection of research papers discussing critical aspects related to the new generation of RICEs.
