Hydrocolloids and pectinase for stabilizing guava nectar
The market for fruit juices and nectars has been growing in recent years, which is attributed to the concern about acquiring healthier and more beneficial foods. Guava (Psidium guajava L.), which belongs to the Myrtaceae family, is considered to be rich in bioactive compounds such as carotenoids, phenolic compounds and L-ascorbic acid. Its fruits are mainly consumed fresh or in the form of juices, nectars, jams and jellies. Nectar is one of the forms of consumption that has seen a significant increase, but it shows phase separation during storage, which can be solved with the addition of hydrocolloids and enzymes, which not only stabilize the nectar but also preserve its bioactive compounds.
Socio-economic Analysis of a Biodiesel Plant
The aim of this work was to carry out a socio-economic analysis for the implementation of a biodiesel plant in the state of Maranh瓊o, taking into account technical, economic and socio-environmental concepts. In order to set up the biodiesel plant in Maranh瓊o, a survey was carried out of the main raw materials available, with a view to selecting the most promising raw material, as well as favorable regions for biodiesel production. Afterwards, the available workforce and the existence of cooperatives in the potential biodiesel plant installation region were analyzed. Next, an economic analysis of biodiesel production was carried out and, at the end, the socio-economic impact on the cooperative members of setting up a biodiesel plant in the region was estimated. Also, based on fixed and variable costs, financial income and payback, within the forecast of sales of biodiesel and its by-products, the project was analyzed and simulated to fit into the PRONAF credit line.

Beyond Risk Mitigation
Value management is described as a method used in the construction design process to identify or establish the value system of the client and it also serves to ensure that the client values are communicated and understood by the project team (Green, 1991). Value Management (VM) evolved from Value Engineering (VE), which places significant emphasis on optimising the function of an asset in terms of lowest cost while the VM methodology consists of a number of steps which examine the functional requirements of the client through a process of analysis and then synthesises a suitable design that offers the best value and meets the functional requirements of the client (Thiry, 1997; PMI, 2015). This study endeavored to provide a clear distinction between VE and VM because these terms are mostly applied by different scholars interchangeably. It is for this purpose that the researcher further emphasised that only VM was adopted for use in this study. It is also asserted that Value Management is different from value Engineering in that VM is aimed at the optimisation of solutions in the establishment of suitable decision frameworks for the rest of the project which is achieved through the use of a structured decision model that originates in Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (Green, 1994). A project is a once-off activity, with one chance to achieve a satisfactory outcome and this necessitates the establishment of unambiguous objectives. Value Management identifies the option which gives the best value for money in accordance with the set criteria (Hiley and Paliokostas, 2001).

Solid waste landfills serve as municipal waste containment facilities. Presently, landfills are required to accommodate as much volume of waste as possible while isolating the waste from surrounding air, soil and ground water. With the intention to provide sufficient space for the increasing waste volumes, modified landfill designs have been implemented which incorporate designs with steep side slopes. Although the National Norms and Standards for Disposal of Waste to Landfill provide the minimum requirements and state that alternative design layouts for landfill slopes exceeding 1H:4V may be considered, the new implementation could increase the risk of landfill instability (Department of Environmental Affairs, 2013a; Emery, 2014). Research has shown that instability problems may be associated with shear failure (Russell, et al., 1998; Kim, 2006; Feng, et al., 2010; Duffy, 2016). In such cases, the safety of these containment facilities depends on the shear strength properties of the landfill boundary conditions and construction materials. As a result, proper understanding of shear strength parameters is essential in ensuring safe designs.
Beyond Standardization
One of the critical factors in preventing failures of structures that consist geosynthetics is the use of appropriately characterized geosynthetic interface shear friction in the theoretical design of the structure. The interface shear friction parameters such as the frictional angle and adhesion must, therefore, first be determined. The interface friction angle and adhesion are measured in the laboratory mainly using the direct shear apparatus in accordance with ASTM-D5321 and ASTM-D6243 standards (Sikwanda et al. 2018). Although these laboratory tests are standardized, the quality of the results can be largely affected by several factors such as specimen gripping systems, shearing rate, applied normal stress, and the type of geosynthetic test specimens (Fox & Stark 2004). Among these factors, the former is considered to be a major source of dissimilarities in the results (Fox & Kim 2008). This is because when the geosynthetic being tested is not sufficiently secured to the shearing blocks by the gripping system, it experiences progressive failure and shear strength that deviates from the actual field performance (Fox et al. 2004). This could lead to unsafe, cost ineffective, etc. design of projects with the respective geosynthetic materials. This research, therefore, was undertaken to investigate the effects of the specimen gripping system on shear strength at the geosynthetic/geosynthetic interface using a direct shear device.

New Tool for Old Pipes
The demand for water, an already strained resource in many countries and areas, is increasing, while cities are continuing to expand and populations are continuing to grow. Urbanisation, population growth, migration and industrialisation are all contributing to this ever increasing need for water (United Nations, 2015; World Bank, 2016). Water resources are, in contrast to the demand, diminishing. This is, due to the increase in demand, increased polluting of water sources, as well as the impact of climate change. It is, therefore, inevitable that a crisis will arise if current trends and behaviour persist. An unacceptable amount of this precious resource is, however, lost unnecessarily, with one of the main contributors being pipeline leakage. By monitoring the condition and leakage of distribution and transfer pipes, effective intervention can be implemented to reduce these losses. A lot of research focuses on reducing leakage from water distribution networks. The leakage from bulk transfer systems must, however, not be overseen, as large amounts of scarce and expensive water may be lost through these systems without water utilities realising it. The University of Cape Town has developed testing equipment for assessing and characterising leakage in distribution networks. The technique uses pressure tests to obtain a relationship between the combined leakage flow rate of a pipe or a pipe network and the pressure in the pipe. The characteristics of the leakage can then be investigation by interpreting the pressure versus leakage relationship and applying the Fixed and Variable Area Discharge concept, as well as the empirical N1 equation.
