Journalism and the Metaverse
Journalism has been in a state of disruption since the development of the Internet. The Metaverse, or what some describe as the future of the Internet, is likely to fuel even further disruption in journalism. Digital platforms and journalism enterprises are already investing substantial resources into the Metaverse, or its likely components of artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality. Although research shows most of the public has little knowledge of the Metaverse, many are keenly interested in what it or its components may bring. Gartner (2022) predicts that a quarter of the public will spend at least one hour per day in the Metaverse by 2026. Journalism may be an important part of this future. This book will critically examine the nature of the Metaverse and its implications for journalism. In particular, the book will examine how the advance of a broadband, interactive and immersive Internet called the Metaverse may change the content and format of news, the nature of journalistic work, who or what is a journalist, the nature and structure of the new industry and how it is funded, as well as the fundamental role of journalism in a digital society. In particular, this book builds on a vision of the Metaverse as an immersive and interactive virtual world, a key development in the next generation of the broadband, publicly accessible Internet. Broadband means high-speed, high-bandwidth Internet connectivity, especially wirelessly. Immersive refers to enveloping, 3D forms of media and communication. Today, we often see immersive media in the form of augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) or other forms of what are labeled extended Reality (XR). Fueled by artificial intelligence, these forms are three dimensional (3D), they have depth and they surround the user in a 360 virtual world visually and aurally (and potentially via other senses, including the haptic). Interactive means both user-to-user engagement (e.g., social media) as well as an exchange between the user and the enveloping content experience of a virtual world. This book will examine the implications of the Metaverse for journalism in four broad domains, including content, how journalists work, structural and systemic considerations, and user and public engagement with news.
Coatings deposited by Solution Plasma Spray
Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composites are widely used in thermo-structural components, especially in the aerospace sector. However, carbon has low resistance in ablative environments, limiting its application in thermal protection systems. This problem can be overcome by protecting the composite with passivation layers based on ceramic materials with low catalytic efficiency in reactions with oxygen and nitrogen at high temperatures. In this context, the main objective of this work is the synthesis of thick coatings with a compositional gradient between SiO2/SiC deposited on C/C composites using a new process called High Velocity Solution Plasma Spray (HVSPS). These coatings are formed from reactions between the C/C composite and the Si(OH)4 colloidal solution sprayed by a supersonic plasma jet generated by a direct current torch. The plasma torch has a different design from conventional torches, increasing the interaction time with plasma regions at high temperatures.
Female Tech Managers' Diversity Perceptions
This study explored female managers' perceptions of diversity hiring. Most diversity studies have used quantitative methodologies and have not explored the qualitative perceptions of diversity hiring. The study's three research questions ask which personal attributes of employees should be diverse within an organization, for which jobs should diversity be a criterion in the employee selection process, and in which organizational situations should diversity be a criterion in the employee selection process. The study follows the qualitative methodology of generic qualitative inquiry and included in-depth interviews of twelve participants. The population for the study is female managers who work in technology companies, within the United States. Analysis of the data collected from interviews, observations, and artifact review occurred through open, axial, and selective coding. The study finds that these participants value diversity among a wide variety of employee personal attributes, jobs, and organizational situations. The implications for practice are that hiring practices can promote diversity when they reduce bias, make diversity a priority throughout the recruiting process, and use targeted sources to reach a wider spectrum of candidates
Sustainability and Resilience of Engineering Assets
Engineered assets are key to the delivery of essential services such as transport, food, water, electricity supply, health and safety, etc. Some of these physical assets are integrated into asset systems and national or regional networks with life cycles extending several decades or even centuries. It is, therefore, of great importance that the strategies and life cycle decisions such as those related to short- and long-term capital investment planning, maintenance strategies, operational plans, and asset disposal lead to the maximization of the value that can be derived from these assets. Moreover, it is essential that the achievement of these goals is sustained in time. Organizations dealing with engineering assets, both public and private, must, therefore, integrate sustainability and resilience concerns into everyday operations, alongside budgets that are often restricted and all the while having to satisfy demanding performance requirements under risky and uncertain environments. Battery Modelling, Applications, and Technology
Batteries, among the various energy storage systems, are electrochemical storage devices that have always been attractive for both stationary and mobile applications. Different kinds of technology have been developed through the years (lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, lithium ion, etc.), and other novel technologies (metal-air, quasi-solid state battery, all-solid state battery, etc.) are still being studied. The most important features for these devices to have include high power, energy density, and efficiency, in addition to a long lifecycle. In particular, the latter can be increased by developing novel technologies in the construction of the batteries themselves and/or in controlling them to operate in their optimal working conditions. To achieve this, the modeling of batteries and the estimation of their parameters becomes a very important challenge. Indeed, through the latter, it is possible to study, analyze, and predict the behavior of single battery cells or whole battery packs with different aims. On the one hand, battery models can be used for analyses of the batteries themselves to improve their efficiency and lifecycle, to build battery management systems, or for sizing battery packs. On the other hand, the same models can be used to analyze the behavior of entire systems in which the battery is one part. This Special Issue collected many articles on battery chemical, electric, thermal, and aging models, integrated battery models and their composition, battery parameter estimation methods, and novel applications and technologies of batteries.

Frequency Conversion Analysis using TIR-based ORQPM Technique
Frequency conversion had grabbed the interest of researchers since 1961, with the development of the laser yielding the needed high intensity monochromatic light. This frequency conversion processes demand phase-match in order to avoid phase error between the interacting waves of three-wave mixing. As a way out of this phase error problem, the total-internal-reflection (TIR) based quasi-phase-matching (QPM) technique had acquired popularity among the researchers of the 1960s' and till now plays a vital role in the field of frequency conversion along with modifications. This TIR-QPM technique was conceptualized by Armstrong et al. in 1962. However, the outcomes of this TIR-QPM technique show discrimination among the theoretical and the experimental evaluation. Raybaut et al. identified the cause of this disparity as destructive interference of the emitted radiation during reflection, which was described by Bloembergen and Pershan's nonlinear law of reflection. Thereupon, the concept of optical rotation quasi-phase-matching (ORQPM) technique was introduced by Lewis Z. Liu et al. in 2012, to avoid the destructive interference of the generated radiation by rotating the plane of polarization. This was the first concept of generating circularly polarized radiation by the family of QPM technique. Therefore, our peer team has combined this ORQPM technique with the TIR phenomenon to successfully alleviate the problem of destructive interference impact of the emitted parametric waves and increase peak conversion efficiency. The polarization rotation of this TIR-ORQPM technique has been exhibited in the presence of a strong external electric field and the generated harmonic radiation is linearly polarized.

But the results of the insurance companies show that the effects of increasing climate change will lead to an increase in damage events such as storms, floods, inundations and heat-related fires and that the expected costs will be much higher, probably by a factor of ten or more.

Given the high virulence of the disease and the absence of vaccines, it is crucial to enhance knowledge about prevention measures to minimize economic losses in the pig industry. African Swine Fever (ASF) poses a significant threat to the pig industry, especially due to high mortality rates and stringent control measures such as culling and movement bans. This study investigates the knowledge of ASF among pig farmers in Ghana, selecting 106 respondents through a multi-stage sampling method.
