Flow Measurements Using Particle Image Velocimetry in the Ultra Compact Combustor
Velocity measurements were performed using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique on the Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) test rig at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Velocity patterns and time-averaged turbulence statistics were calculated for data taken with the UCC burning hydrogen fuel in the straight cavity vane and curved cavity vane configurations. The equivalence was varied from 0.7 to 1.5, while the ratio of cavity air to main air was varied from 5% to 20%. Spanwise turbulence intensity penetrated into less than 50% of the main channel for all conditions except the richest (equivalence ratio of 1.5). A study was performed with the curved and straight sections increasing flow rates while holding other factors constant to determine velocity dependence. Relative turbulence intensities were independent of overall flow velocity in the straight configuration, while a negative correlation was observed in the curved configuration. Overall turbulence intensity levels were measured at 15% and 21% for the straight and curved configurations respective. The RVC generated significant flow rotation. Fatigue Behavior of an Advanced Sic/Sic Composite at Elevated Temperature in Air and in Steam
The fatigue behavior of an advanced Silicon Carbide/Silicon Carbide (SiC/SiC) ceramic matrix composite (CMC) was investigated at 1200 C in laboratory air and in steam environments. The composite consisted of a SiC matrix reinforced with Boron Nitride (BN) coated Hi-Nicalon fibers woven into eight-harness-satin (8HS) weave plies. Tensile stress-strain behavior and tensile properties were also evaluated at 1200 C. Tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted in both laboratory air and in steam at 1200 C at frequencies of 0.1 Hz, 1.0 Hz, and 10 Hz. The tension-tension fatigue tests had a ratio of minimum stress to maximum stress of R = 0.1, with maximum stresses ranging from 80-120 MPa in air and 60-110 MPa in steam. Fatigue run-out was defined as 105 cycles for 0.1 Hz tests and as 2 x 105 cycles for 1.0 Hz and 10 Hz tests. Strain accumulation with cycles and modulus evolution with cycles were analyzed for each fatigue test. Finite Element Model Updating
The applications of antiresonant frequencies to finite element (FE) model updating are few and usually limited to numerical examples. This work uses antiresonant frequencies in the model updating of an experimental structure and analyzes the physical correctness of the updated model by using it to detect damage. Antiresonant frequencies were used in the FE model updating of a six-meter aluminum truss. The model used rigid links to model welded and bolted joints. Rigid link dimensions were used as parameters in an iterative update based on eigenvalue and antiresonance sensitivities. The first update used 11 natural frequencies and 21 antiresonant frequencies from seven experimental frequency response functions (FRFs). The second update used only 11 natural frequencies. The antiresonant updated model produced a 46% better correlation to experimental FRFs than the non-antiresonant updated joint model. The antiresonant updated model was used to predict FRFs for the FTE in 112 damaged configurations. Pattern classification and curve-fit algorithms for damage detection were tested. The curve-fit method correctly identified damage 92.6% of the time compared to 76.1% for the pattern classier. Effects of Polishing Shot-Peened Surfaces on Fretting Fatigue Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V
The research of this thesis was done to investigate the effects of polishing a shot-peened specimen of Ti-6Al-4V on the fretting fatigue life. The shot-peening process, though one of the most beneficial techniques in prolonging fretting fatigue life, creates a textured surface that may lead to problems on the micro level. This research was done in an attempt to further improve the peening process by examining the effects of another surface treatment to be used in conjunction, surface polishing. The rough peened surface may contain abrupt changes in surface geometry that act as stress risers, which are more highly prone to crack initiation. Specimens were hand polished after they were peened to remove approximately 25 microns of material from the surface to remove all stress risers while preserving the beneficial residual stresses created by peening. Experiments designed to simulate fretting fatigue similar to previous research were conducted until specimens fractured. Seven experiments were conducted using titanium allow Ti-6Al-4V, shot peened using 7A intensity. All tests were run at ambient air temperature. Fatigue parameters, such as stress range and effective stress, were analyzed. Fretting fatigue conditions were determined and surface roughness measurements of polished and unpolished specimens were taken. This paper will examine three possible weather modification technologies and techniques to disrupt and diminish the destructive power of tropical cyclones in the 2030 timeframe: specifically tuned microwaves from space-based solar power stations, biodegradable monomolecular surface materials ("monolayers"), and moisture-absorbing materials. Various scenarios along with analysis of several experiments and simulations will reveal that the basic technology exists today for hurricane modification within in the next thirty years. Detached Eddy Simulation Analysis of Pak-B Low Pressure Turbine Blade
Two cases were computationally investigated using the detached eddy simulation (DES) turbulence model: an unmodified Pak-B blade and a Pak-B blade with a dimple located at 65% of axial chord. Both cases were created so that they simulated an infinite span with an infinite number of dimples. The cases were run for an inlet Reynolds number of 25,000. The computed results were used to resolve the location of separation and reattachment, visualize the streamlines for the dimpled case, build velocity magnitude contour and vector plots, and map the thickness of the boundary layer. The results were then compared to previous computational and experimental studies in order to validate the detached eddy simulation model for future research into the effect of dimples on low pressure turbine flow fields. For the unmodified blade, the performance of the DES model compared favorably to other available viscous and turbulence models. For the dimpled blade, preliminary results also indicate favorable results although further development of the flow field is necessary to verify this. Decision Directed and Constant Modulus Algorithms Derived and Evaluated for Multicarrier Systems
The purpose of this research is to derive and examine blind adaptive algorithms for equalizing multicarrier (MC) communication systems and analyze how they performunder varying environmental conditions and parametric variations, focusing on equalizersset in cascade with the channel. Two well-accepted and widely-known cost functions, Decision Directed (DD) and Constant Modulus (CM), are applied to the MC signalstructure, and gradient descent algorithms based on both DD and CM functions arederived, analyzed and compared. Comparison of the new algorithms, Multi CarrierDecision Directed (MCDD) and Multi Carrier Constant Modulus (MCCM), focuses ondetailing how each algorithm performs when the factors of noise power and symbolsynchronization are varied. Additionally, a Frequency Domain Equalizer (FEQ) isdeveloped and employed to de-rotate and resize the output symbol constellation. BothMCDD and MCCM are compared against other blind and trained adaptive MCequalization algorithms in the areas of bit error rate (BER) vs. signal to noise ratio (SNR)and BER vs. synchronization delay. An Evaluation of Wind Turbine Technology at Peterson AFB
Wind energy technology is a viable source for attaining the emission reduction and renewable energy use goals set forth by the executive office. In accordance with Executive Orders, the Air Force must reduce greenhouse emissions and energy consumption, and expand the use of renewable energy sources within its facilities nation-wide by year 2010. This mandate requires that the Air Force look at alternative electrical production and rely more on such renewable energy resources as wind power. The specific problem addressed by this research is whether on-site wind energy generation can be more economically feasible than the conventional energy consumption at Peterson AFB. The hypothesis of this research is that wind energy will not be economically effective as an energy alternative without the inclusion of quantified environmental benefits. The life cycle cost comparisons derived from generating on-site wind energy proved not to be strictly economically feasible for Peterson AFB when compared to fossil fuel generated electricity. Selecting Energy Efficient Building Envelope Retrofits to Exisiting Department of Defense Buildings Using Value Focused Thinking
The Department of Defense (DoD) has hundreds of thousands of facilities in its inventory, which consume billions of BTUSs of energy per year. Much of that energy is used to heat and cool the facility, and a great deal of this energy is lost through the building envelope. While new military construction works towards energy efficiency, the majority of DoD facilities were built over forty years ago with little regard to energy efficiency, and it is these facilities that have the greatest potential for energy efficient building envelope retrofits. There are hundreds of various new building envelope technologies available to retrofit an existing building envelope, including window, roof, and wall technologies. This research investigated fifteen different building envelope technologies and found that many of them are feasible alternatives for DoD facilities. Value Focused Thinking (VFT) was the methodology used to objectively compare these new technologies and capture what Air Force decision makers value in regards to retrofitting older facilities with these new building envelope technologies. Data from three different Air Force bases and values from three different Air Force Civil Engineer Operations Flight Chiefs were used to evaluate these fifteen technologies, and the results show that the energy efficient window technologies have the highest potential for energy savings at each location. Validation of the AFIT Small Scale Combustion Facility and OH Laser-Induced Fluorescence of an Atmospheric Laminar Premixed Flame
Construction in the AFIT combustion facility is complete and the objective of this report is to explain the steps taken to make the laboratory operational. The infinite radius Ultra-Compact Combustor (UCC) sectional model has been delivered and is fully installed with all fuel, air and instrument lines. Every major system in the lab has been tested and is functioning properly. Laboratory operating procedure has been established to ensure both safety and continuity in experimental results. Finally, the lab has been certified through official safety channels and combustion experiments are underway. The unique capability of the AFIT combustion laboratory is the laser diagnostic system. The laser system has been configured for OH Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and initial experiments were performed on a premixed, laminar flame produced by a Hencken burner. The LIF methods accurately measured the OH concentration and temperature of the flame as compared to theoretical equilibrium flame data with an overall system uncertainty of approximately 2.5%. Examination of Contact Width on Fretting Fatigue
The primary goal of this study was to find the effects on the fretting fatigue life when systematically holding the fretting fatigue variables, peak contact pressure, maximum/minimum nominal bulk stress, and the ratio of shear traction to pressure force constant while varying the contact semi-width through changes in pad radius and normal load. Experimental tests were performed on a test setup capable of independent pad displacement. Analytical and finite element simulations of the different experimental tests were performed. The local mechanistic parameters were inspected. Five different critical plane based fatigue predictive parameters lacked effectiveness in predicting changes in life with changes in contact width. The Ruiz parameter, and a modified version of the Ruiz parameter performed better than the five critical plane based parameters. Correlations between slip amplitude and fretting fatigue life were found. Tests experiencing infinite fatigue life, in contrast to the typical shortened fretting fatigue life, were experiencing the gross slip condition, which led to fretting wear instead of fretting fatigue.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar
Traditional monostatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) platforms force the user to choose between two image types: larger, low resolution images or smaller, high resolution images. Switching to a Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (WAM-SAR) approach allows formation of large high-resolution images. Unfortunately, WAM-SAR suffers from two significant implementation problems. First, wavefront curvature effects, non-linear flight paths, and warped ground planes lead to image defocusing with traditional SAR processing methods. A new 3-D monostatic/bistatic image formation routine solves the defocusing problem, correcting for all relevant wide-angle effects. Inverse SAR (ISAR) imagery from a Radar Cross Section (RCS) chamber validates this approach. The second implementation problem stems from the large Doppler spread in the wide-angle scene, leading to severe aliasing problems. This research effort develops a new anti-aliasing technique using randomized Stepped-Frequency (SF) waveforms to form Doppler filter nulls coinciding with aliasing artifact locations. We have experimentally assessed the quantitative nature of planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) measurements of NO concentration in a unique atmospheric pressure, laminar, axial inverse diffusion flame (IDF). The PLIF measurements were assessed relative to a two-dimensional array of separate laser saturated fluorescence (LSF) measurements. We demonstrated and evaluated several experimentally-based procedures for enhancing the quantitative nature of PLIF concentration images. Because these experimentally-based PLIF correction schemes require only the ability to make PLIF and LSF measurements, they produce a more broadly applicable PLIF diagnostic compared to numerically-based correction schemes. We experimentally assessed the influence of interferences on both narrow-band and broad-band fluorescence measurements at atmospheric and high pressures. Optimum excitation and detection schemes were determined for the LSF and PLIF measurements. Single-input and multiple-input, experimentally-based PLIF enhancement procedures were developed for application in test environments with both negligible and significant quench-dependent error gradients. Each experimentally-based procedure provides an enhancement of approximately 50% in the quantitative nature of the PLIF measurements, and results in concentration images nominally as quantitative as LSF point measurements. These correction procedures can be applied to other species, including radicals, for which no experimental data are available from which to implement numerically-based PLIF enhancement procedures.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
