Analysis of Cloud-Free Line-of-Sight Probability Calculations
Cloud-free line-of-sight probabilities were calculated using two separate methods. The first was a variation of a method developed by the Rand Corporation in 1972. In it, CFLOS probabilities were calculated using empirical data based on five years of photograms taken over Columbia, Missouri and forecasted cloud amounts rather than climatological values. The second was a new approach using the Cloud Scene Simulation Model developed by Phillips Laboratory. Cloud scenes were generated using forecasted cloud fields, meteorological inputs, and thirty random numbers. Water content files were produced and processed through a follow-on program to determine the extinction coefficients at each grid point in the working domain. A reiterative routine was written to integrate the extinction coefficients along a view angle from the top of the domain down to the surface at separate points within the horizontal domain. The values of each point were summed and averaged over the working domain to determine the CFLOS probability for the target area. The nadir look angle was then examined for both methods. Stratus, stratocumulus, cumulus, and altocumulus cloud types were independently examined with the CSSM generated cloud scenes. Strain Rate Dependent Deformation and Strength Modeling of a Polymer Matrix Composite Utilizing a Micromechanics Approach
Potential gas turbine applications will expose polymer matrix composites to very high strain rate loading conditions, requiring an ability to understand and predict the material behavior under extreme conditions. Specifically, analytical methods designed for these applications must have the capability of properly capturing the strain rate sensitivities and nonlinearities that are present in the material response. The Ramaswamy-Stouffer constitutive equations, originally developed to analyze the viscoplastic deformation of metals, have been modified to simulate the nonlinear deformation response of ductile, crystalline polymers. The constitutive model is characterized and correlated for two representative ductile polymers. Fiberite 977-2 and PEEK, and the computed results correlate well with experimental values. The polymer constitutive equations are implemented in a mechanics of materials based composite micromechanics model to predict the nonlinear, rate dependent deformation response of a composite ply. Uniform stress and uniform strain assumptions are applied to compute the effective stresses of a composite unit cell from the applied strains. The micromechanics equations are successfully verified for two polymer matrix composites. IM7/977-2 and AS4/PEEK. The ultimate strength of a composite ply is predicted with the Hashin failure criteria that were implemented in the composite micromechanics model. The failure stresses of the two composite material systems are accurately predicted for a variety of fiber orientations and strain rates. The composite deformation model is implemented in LS-DYNA, a commercially available transient dynamic explicit finite element code. The matrix constitutive equations are converted into an incremental form, and the model is implemented into LS-DYNA through the use of a user defined material subroutine. Mission Assurance Analysis of Theater Ballistic Missile Defense Systems
In today's budget-constrained environment with aging equipment and rapid technology turnover, the commander's requirement to prioritize and justify funding requests has essentially become an exercise in mission assurance. This study addresses the TBMDS mission assurance problem generated from the complexity of the political, organizational and physical/architectural environments. The Mission-Oriented Success Analysis and Improvement Criteria (MOSAIC) management approach provides commanders a framework for mission assurance of TBMDS. This study specifically incorporates a discrete event simulation analysis and the Mission Assurance Analysis Protocol (MAAP) to identify the most effective improvement areas under the MOSAIC approach. At a high level of abstraction, analysis from a discrete event simulation of the TBMDS prioritized the component reliability from the most to least impactful as shooter/interceptor, C2 facility, Radar and Communication. The MAAP expanded success profiles simultaneously address multiple environmental factors, including reliability, for each key objective needed for the mission. At an equally high level of abstraction, these profiles identified that one key objective of the TBMDS can be achieved successfully and three key objectives had significant mission assurance gaps. Pulse Shaped 8-PSK Bandwidth Efficiency and Spectral Spike Elimination
The most bandwidth-efficient communication methods are imperative to cope with the congested frequency bands. Pulse shaping methods have excellent effects on narrowing bandwidth and increasing band utilization. The position of the baseband filters for the pulse shaping is crucial. Post-modulation pulse shaping (a low pass filter is located after the modulator) can change signals from constant envelope to non-constant envelope, and non-constant envelope signals through non-linear device (a SSPA or TWT) can further spread the power spectra. Pre-modulation pulse shaping (a filter is located before the modulator) will have constant envelope. These two pulse shaping methods have different effects on narrowing the bandwidth and producing bit errors. This report studied the effect of various pre-modulation pulse shaping filters with respect to bandwidth, spectral spikes and bit error rate. A pre-modulation pulse shaped 8-ary Phase Shift Keying (8PSK) modulation was used throughout the simulations. In addition to traditional pulse shaping filters, such as Bessel, Butterworth and Square Root Raised Cosine (SRRC), other kinds of filters or pulse waveforms were also studied in the pre-modulation pulse shaping method. Simulations were conducted by using the Signal Processing Worksystem (SPW) software package on HP workstations which simulated the power spectral density of pulse shaped 8-PSK signals, end to end system performance and bit error rates (BERS) as a function of Eb/No using pulse shaping in an AWGN channel. These results are compared with the post-modulation pulse shaped 8-PSK results. The simulations indicate traditional pulse shaping filters used in pre-modulation pulse shaping may produce narrower bandwidth, but with worse BER than those in post-modulation pulse shaping. Hyperspectral Imagery Target Detection Using Principal Component Analysis
The purpose of this research was to improve on the outlier detection methods used in hyperspectral imagery analysis. An algorithm was developed based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a classical multivariate technique usually used for data reduction. Using PCA, a score is computed and a test statistic is then used to make outlier declarations. First, four separate PCA test statistics were compared in the algorithm. It was found that Mahalanobis distance performed the best. This test statistic was then compared using the entire data set and a clustered data set. Since it has been shown in the literature that even one outlier can distort the covariance matrix, an iterative approach to the clustered based algorithm was developed. After each iteration, if an outlier(s) is identified, the observation(s) is removed and the algorithm is reapplied. Once no new outliers are identified or one of the stopping conditions is met, the algorithm is reapplied a final time with the new covariance matrix applied to the original data set. Explosion Effects on Mine Ventilation Stoppings
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research to evaluate explosion blast effects on typical U.S. mine ventilation stoppings in the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). An innovative Australian-designed brattice stopping was also evaluated. After mine explosion accidents, MSHA conducts investigations to determine the cause(s) as a means to prevent future occurrences. Impact of Snow Removal Operations on Thermoplastic Pavement Markings
This pilot study explored the effect snow removal operations have on thermoplastic pavement markings. Including snow removal as a separate independent variable is unique because much of the previous research performed on pavement marking degradation mentioned snow removal as a direct cause in a marking degrading more rapidly; however, it is mentioned as an afterthought and a suggestion to be considered in future research. This pilot study looked at 10 thermoplastic markings and all marking data were collected in the field, using a hand-held retroreflectometer. Data collected began 60 days after initial marking application and ended 12 months after initial marking application. Data were analyzed using linear regression. A significant finding was that during the first year, white thermoplastic markings located in the center of the road, and that are exposed to snow removal operations do not reach the apex of their break-in phase. Radar Orbit Analysis Tool Using Least Squares Estimator
Most objects tracked in space follow a regular Keplerian orbit; unfortunately, non-Keplerian objects such as maneuvering satellites, tethered systems, and thrusting ballistic missiles are becoming more common. It is important to be able to distinguish between Keplerian and non-Keplerian objects due to the potential risk of a tethered satellite being mistaken for an object on re-entry. This research focused on creating a computer model that can detect the non-gravitational acceleration present in non- Keplerian orbits. A 3rd order Taylor series expansion was used to model the dynamics and to produce simulated radar data. Linear least squares estimation was used to estimate the initial state of a space object with a state vector composed of position, velocity, acceleration, and its first derivative. Monte Carlo analysis was used to verify that the estimator was unbiased and representative of the uncertainty in the data. The Monte Carlo method detected non-gravitational acceleration as small as 1.12 cm/s2; however, a subsequent approach that analyzed the data sets individually only detected acceleration as small as 10.63 cm/s2. Assessment of the Undiscovered oil and gas of the Senegal Province, Mauritania, Senegal, the Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau, Northwest Africa
Undiscovered, conventional oil and gas resources were assessed in the Senegal Province as part of the U.S. Geological Survey World Petroleum Assessment 2000 (U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Assessment Team, 2000). Although several total petroleum systems may exist in the province, only one composite total petroleum system, the Cretaceous-Tertiary Composite Total Petroleum System, was defined with one assessment unit, the Coastal Plain and Offshore Assessment Unit, having sufficient data to allow quantitative assessment. The primary source rocks for the Cretaceous-Tertiary Composite Total Petroleum System are the Cenomanian-Turonian marine shales. The Turonian shales can be as much as 150 meters thick and contain Type II organic carbon ranging from 3 to 10 weight percent. In the Senegal Province, source rocks are mature even when situated at depths relatively shallow for continental passive margin basins. Reservoir rocks consist of Upper Cretaceous sandstones and lower Tertiary clastic and carbonate rocks. The Lower Cretaceous platform carbonate rocks (sealed by Cenomanian shales) have porosities ranging from 10 to 23 percent. Oligocene carbonate rock reservoirs exist, such as the Dome Flore field, which contains as much as 1 billion barrels of heavy oil (10? API, 1.6 percent sulfur) in place. The traps are a combination of structural closures and stratigraphic pinch-outs. Hydrocarbon production in the Senegal Province to date has been limited to several small oil and gas fields around Cape Verde (also known as the Dakar Peninsula) from Upper Cretaceous sandstone reservoirs bounded by normal faults, of which three fields (two gas and one oil) exceed the minimum size assessed in this study (1 MMBO; 6 BCFG). Discovered known oil resources in the Senegal Province are 10 MMBO, with known gas resources of 49 BCFG (Petroconsultants, 1996). This study estimates that 10 percent of the total number of potential oil and gas fields (both discovered and undiscovered) of at least the minimum size have been discovered. The estimated mean size and number of assessed, undiscovered oil fields are 13 MMBO and 13 fields, respectively, whereas the mean size and number of undiscovered gas fields are estimated to be 50 BCFG and 11 fields. The mean estimates for undiscovered conventional petroleum resources are 157 MMBO, 856 BCFG, and 43 MMBNGL (table 2). The mean sizes of the largest anticipated undiscovered oil and gas fields are 66 MMBO and 208 BCFG, respectively. The Senegal Province is underexplored considering its large size. Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar
Traditional monostatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) platforms force the user to choose between two image types: larger, low resolution images or smaller, high resolution images. Switching to a Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (WAM-SAR) approach allows formation of large high-resolution images. Unfortunately, WAM-SAR suffers from two significant implementation problems. First, wavefront curvature effects, non-linear flight paths, and warped ground planes lead to image defocusing with traditional SAR processing methods. A new 3-D monostatic/bistatic image formation routine solves the defocusing problem, correcting for all relevant wide-angle effects. Inverse SAR (ISAR) imagery from a Radar Cross Section (RCS) chamber validates this approach. The second implementation problem stems from the large Doppler spread in the wide-angle scene, leading to severe aliasing problems. This research effort develops a new anti-aliasing technique using randomized Stepped-Frequency (SF) waveforms to form Doppler filter nulls coinciding with aliasing artifact locations. Forward-Looking Airborne Radar (FLAR) Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) has not achieved the same level of radar performance improvement as side- looking radar, because the ground clutter doppler-range dependence destroys the In- dependent and Identically Distributed (iid) assumption key to the STAP foundation. This thesis examines the Frequency Diverse Array (FDA), where each channel transmits and receives at a di erent frequency. The resulting range-dependent FDA antenna pattern is proposed to improve FLAR STAP performance. The planar FDA radar data model is derived and analytically veri ed to be equivalent to the constant frequency data model when each element frequency is set to the same value. Least-Squares Finite Element Formulation for Fluid-Structure Interaction
Fluid-structure interaction problems prove difficult due to the coupling between fluid and solid behavior. Typically, different theoretical formulations and numerical methods are used to solve fluid and structural problems separately. The leastsquares finite element method is capable of accurately solving both fluid and structural problems. This capability allows for a simultaneously coupled fluid structure interaction formulation using a single variational approach to solve complex and nonlinear aeroelasticity problems. The least-squares finite element method was compared to commonly used methods for both structures and fluids individually. The fluid analysis was compared to finite differencing methods and the structural analysis type compared to traditional Weak Galerkin finite element methods. The simultaneous solution method was then applied to aeroelasticity problems with a known solution. Achieving these results required unique iterative methods to balance each domain's or differential equation's weighting factor within the simultaneous solution scheme. The scheme required more computational time but it did provide the first hands-off method capable of solving complex fluid-structure interaction problems using a simultaneous least-squares formulation. Solutions to Three-Dimensional Thin-Layer Navier-Stokes Equations in Rotating Coordinates for Flow Through Turbomachinery
The viscous, Navier-Stokes solver for turbomachinery applications, MSUTC has been modified to include the rotating frame formulation. The three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations have been cast in a rotating Cartesian frame enabling the freezing of grid motion. This also allows the flow-field associated with an isolated rotor to be viewed as a steady-state problem. Consequently, local time stepping can be used to accelerate convergence. The formulation is validated by running NASA's Rotor 67 as the test case. results are compared between the rotating frame code and the absolute frame code. Mission Assurance Analysis of Theater Ballistic Missile Defense Systems
In today's budget-constrained environment with aging equipment and rapid technology turnover, the commander's requirement to prioritize and justify funding requests has essentially become an exercise in mission assurance. This study addresses the TBMDS mission assurance problem generated from the complexity of the political, organizational and physical/architectural environments. The Mission-Oriented Success Analysis and Improvement Criteria (MOSAIC) management approach provides commanders a framework for mission assurance of TBMDS. This study specifically incorporates a discrete event simulation analysis and the Mission Assurance Analysis Protocol (MAAP) to identify the most effective improvement areas under the MOSAIC approach. At a high level of abstraction, analysis from a discrete event simulation of the TBMDS prioritized the component reliability from the most to least impactful as shooter/interceptor, C2 facility, Radar and Communication. The MAAP expanded success profiles simultaneously address multiple environmental factors, including reliability, for each key objective needed for the mission. At an equally high level of abstraction, these profiles identified that one key objective of the TBMDS can be achieved successfully and three key objectives had significant mission assurance gaps. An Estimation Theory Approach to Detection and Ranging of Obscured Targets in 3-D LADAR Data
The purpose of this research is to develop an algorithm to detect obscured images in 3-D LADAR data. The real data used for this research was gathered using a FLASH LADAR system under development at AFRL/SNJM. The system transmits light with a wavelength of 1.55 micrometers and produces 20 128 X 128 temporally resolved images from the return pulse separated by less than 2 nanoseconds in time. New algorithms for estimating the range to a target in 3-D FLASH LADAR data were developed. Results from processing real data are presented and compared to the traditional correlation receiver for extracting ranges to the target. The Navigation Potential of Ground Feature Tracking
This research effort examines the reduction of error in inertial navigation aided by vision. This is part of an effort focused on navigation in a GPS denied environment. The navigation concept examined here consists of two main steps. First, extract the position of a tracked ground object using vision and geo-locate it in 3 dimensional navigation frame. In this rst step multiple positions of the UAV are assumed known; think of a synthetic aperture. The only information about the tracked ground objects/features is the unit vector that points to the objects from the center of the camera. Two such vectors give enough information to calculate the best estimate of the position of the tracked object in a 3 dimensional navigation frame using the method of least square. Concerning the second step: checking observability for the 3-D case shows that at least 2 objects need to be tracked. An Approach to Large Scale Radar-Based Modeling and Simulation
This research presents a method of aggregating, or reducing the resolution, of a commonly available DoD simulation. It addresses the differences between varying levels of resolution and scope used in the Department of Defense's hierarchy of models pyramid. A data representation that aggregates engagement-level simulation data to use at a lower resolution level, the mission-level, is presented and analyzed. Two formats of implementing this data representation are developed and compared: the rigid cylinder format and the expanding tables format. The rigid cylinder format provides an intuitive way to visualize the data representation and is used to develop the theory. The expanding tables format expands upon the capabilities of the rigid cylinder format and reduces the simulation time. Tests are run to show the effects of each format for various combinations of engagement-level simulation inputs.
