We are seeing an increased frequency, size, and destruction of wildfires across the West. Same goes for the hurricanes across the Southeast and the tornadoes of the Midwest. The global pandemics are growing more likely. These risks are not giving way any time soon - it is time for an all-hands-on-deck effort to make this world a safer, healthier, and happier place to live. But, of course, all hands-on deck has historically excused the captain. And in America, our captain is the federal government; and sadly, our leaders are doing nothing but maintaining a status quo that is slowly killing our planet. Fortunately, however, there is a steady and trustworthy solution we can turn to. No, not our centralized political or economic leadership: decentralized digital technology. Millennials and Gen-Zers grew up watching their government and economic systems fail because politicians and business leaders either live in denial or put their profits before the people. But we're a resilient bunch, and those of us most impacted by the failures of our centralized political institutions aren't just taking it lying down. We are now seeing a mass mobilization of people innovating new ways to harness decentralized technologies ("decent tech") to empower a new phase of environmental activism that rises up from the grassroots. Digital technology is growing increasingly decentralized, and as is our opportunity to solve our local and global environmental problems for ourselves. To do so, however, we must think more deeply about decentralized technology as a tool that increases our power to stimulate positive change starting from the grassroots. The world has seen a proliferation in technology since the first industrial revolution, and over the centuries increasingly sophisticated technologies have changed the way we live, work, and interact with each other. Reasonable minds can reasonably differ regarding whether our society is better off for all the progress we have seen in digital technology over the decades. But all such critiques aside, modern technology has made water cleaner, sanitation healthier, air purer, and the environment safer for billions of people around the world. Digital solutions to real-world problems have extended the length of and improved the qualities of our lives. And more to the point, technology has helped local communities solve their most pressing social and environmental problems - which are largely ignored by the higher-ups. In fact, computing technology is the best tool we have to protect ourselves when the people we put in power simply won't. We can do this by using the power of digital technologies to mobilize effective grassroots movements. And thanks to the growing trend towards decentralization, this is getting easier every day. In fact, the increasing number of technological tools that do not require lasting association with a centralized controlling organization - i.e. decent tech -are the most powerful weapons in the modern advocate's arsenal.

Metal-Ion Hybrid Capacitors for Energy Storage

Rapid growth in the research and development of clean energy storage techniques has yielded a significant number of electrochemically active compounds/materials possessing enormous potential to facilitate the fabrication of next generation devices such as the supercapacitor. This Brief describes recent progress in the field of metal-ion based hybrid electrical energy storage devices, with emphasis on the effect of different metal ions and other constituent components on the overall electrochemical performance of battery-supercapacitor hybrids (BSHs). Although significant efforts have been made to create an effective electrical energy storage system that would have the energy density of a battery and the power density of a supercapacitor, persistent challenges still lie in combining these two altogether different systems to form a cost-effective and safe storage device. Detailed comparisons of output performance and longevity (in terms of cyclic stability) are provided, including device fabrication cost and safety.Of the several proposed schematics/prototypes, hybrid supercapacitors, with both carbon-based EDLC electrode and pure faradic (battery type) electrode can work in tandem to yield high energy densities with little degradation in specific power. As a promising electric energy storage device, supercapacitors address several critical issues in various fields of applications from miniaturized electronic devices and wearable electronics to power hungry heavy automobiles. Depending on the electrode configuration and other controlling parameters, these BSHs can have contrasting performance statistics. Metal ion BSHs such as Li+, Na+, Mg+2, Zn+2 etc., acid-alkaline BSHs, and redox electrolyte based BSHs all represent recent approaches, with BSHs based on metal ions, particularly Lithium, of particular interest because of the extreme popularity of Li-ion based batteries. This book is writtenfor a broad readership of graduate students and academic and industrial researchers who are concerned with the growth and development of sustainable energy systems where efficient and cost-effective storage is key.

Replacement of fibers with steel rebars in concrete structures

One of the materials that can replace rebar in reinforced concrete is fiber. Reinforcing the concrete with fibers instead of rebar reduces the weight of the concrete and eliminates the damage caused by corrosion and erosion of the steel. Also By reducing the consumption of steel, we can get closer to making sustainable concrete. reinforcement of concrete structures with fibers is one of the methods to improve the mechanical properties and improve the flexural and tensile performance by which brittle mixtures show somewhat elastic behavior. In this book, the compressive strength of concretes containing macro synthetic fibers has been studied, and compression samples with percentages of 0-1.5% have been made in the laboratory, and the necessary tests have been performed on them. Finally, we concluded that adding fibers increases the compressive strength of concrete by 1.5%.Also, in Abaqus finite element software, a 3 story concrete frame containing fibers is modeled and subjected to cyclic loading. The use of fibers reduces about 25% of the rebars without reducing the strength.
