Formation Flight Control for Aerial Refueling

A controller is designed for an aircraft to autonomously fly formation during aerial refueling. Requirements for a refueling autopilot are stated. A six-degree-offreedom model is developed for an F-16 lead aircraft and a Learjet LJ-25 wing aircraft. Bare airframe stability of both aircraft is investigated, and stability augmentation is performed. A Matlab Simulink simulation is built to reproduce the sensor inputs that will be available to the wing aircraft in flight, including disturbances. Control frames are investigated to determine the optimum presentation of the error vector for control during the task of air refueling. Control laws are developed from the initial premise of proportional-plus-integral control on position error only, and made more complex until desired performance is achieved. Tanker flight profiles are designed for the lead aircraft, and simulations are accomplished to estimate controller performance. Stability and robustness are investigated through the addition of noise, turbulence, and time delays while exploring the capability limits during increasingly aggressive profiles. Modifications for flight test are described, and flight test results are reviewed from 7 formation flights of a USAF C-12 and a Learjet LJ-25 under fully autonomous control in an operationally representative refueling environment. Pilot Mental Workload Calibration

The issue of predicting high pilot mental workload is important to the United States Air Force because lives and aircraft can be lost when errors are made during periods of mental overload and task saturation. Current research efforts use psychophysiological measures such as electroencephalography (EEG), cardiac, ocular, and respiration measures in an attempt to identify and predict mental workload levels. Existing classification methods successfully classify pilot mental workload using flight data from the same pilot on the same day but unsuccessfully classify workload using data from a different pilot on a different day. The primary focus of this effort is the development of a calibration scheme that allows a small subset of salient psychophysiological features developed using actual flight data for one pilot on a given day to accurately classify pilot mental workload for a separate pilot on a different day. Extensive raw data preprocessing, including 29 Fourier transformations for each second of flight data, prepares the feature data for analysis. Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation of Vortex Breakdown for a Delta Wing at High Angle of Attack

Using the commercially available FLUENT 3-D flow field solver, this research effort investigated vortex breakdown over a delta wing at high angle of attack (?簣) in preparation for investigation of active control of vortex breakdown using steady, alongcore blowing. A flat delta-shaped half-wing with sharp leading edge and sweep angle of 60 [degrees] was modeled at ?簣 = 18 [degrees] in a wind tunnel at Mach 0.04 and Reynolds number of 3.4 x 10 5. A hybrid (combination of structured and unstructured) numerical mesh was generated to accommodate blowing ports on the wing surface. Results for cases without and with along-core blowing included comparison of various turbulence models for predicting both flow field physics and quantitative flow characteristics. FLUENT turbulence models included Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), Renormalization Group k-?繕, Reynolds Stress (RSM), and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), as well as comparison with laminar and inviscid models. Mesh independence was also investigated, and solutions were compared with experimentally determined results and theoretical prediction. These research results show that, excepting the LES model for which the computational mesh was insufficiently refined and which was not extensively investigated, none of the turbulence models above, as implemented with the given numerical grid, generated a solution which was suitably comparable to the experimental data. An Approach to the Constrained Design of Natural Laminar Flow Airfoils

A design method has been developed by which an airfoil with a substantial amount of natural laminar flow can be designed, while maintaining other aerodynamic and geometric constraints. After obtaining the initial airfoil's pressure distribution at the design lift coefficient using an Euler solver coupled with an integml turbulent boundary layer method, the calculations from a laminar boundary layer solver are used by a stability analysis code to obtain estimates of the transition location (using N-Factors) for the starting airfoil. A new design method then calculates a target pressure distribution that will increase the larninar flow toward the desired amounl An airfoil design method is then iteratively used to design an airfoil that possesses that target pressure distribution. Technology Transfer Programs

With a limited research and defense budget, cost effective methods of meeting security objectives are crucial. An exploratory investigation of Air Force (AF) technology transfer programs will be addressed in this paper. These programs incorporate dual-use opportunities within their portfolio. There will be a description and discussion of the following technology transfer programs: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR), Dual-Use Science and Technology (DUS and T), Technology Transfer (T2), and Independent Research and Development (IR and D). In addition, the description, focus, and requirements of the following technology transfer agreement mechanisms will be discussed: Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA), Commercial Test Agreement (CTA), Patent License Agreement (PLA), Technology Investment Agreement (TIA), and Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA). A benefit of the technology transfer programs is their enhancement to both U.S. security and competitiveness through investment in dual-use technology This research used a mixed method strategy to collect data, which incorporated data from previous literature on technology transfer, current program data, and semi-structured interviews that included both open and closed ended questions. This method allowed the researcher to converge on the broad results in order to focus on detailed views from the interviewees as well as clarify qualitative data. The findings from this research suggest similarities and differences exist within the technology transfer programs and their agreement mechanisms. Thomson Scattering Study of Collisional-Shock Heated Plasmas, Report No. 62

Thomson scattering was used to obtain eloctron temperature and density profiles in deuterium plasmas produced by strong collisional shock waves. The transverse shock speeds were 3 to 25 cm/ usec in 50 to 100 mTorr deuterium. Ruby laser light was incident at a right angle to the axis in the midpoint of the annular gap of an electromagnetically driven coaxial shock tube.and scattered 9 light was collected at 90 degrees. Plasma created by reflecting a strong shock from a dielectric wall was also studied. It is found that the plasma electron temperature (10-30 eV) is much less than the ion temperature (100-500 eV) as is predicted by theory for the early life of theplasma. Electron-lon Coulomb colllslonal temperature relaxation does not occur during the times of observation (3-4, AA sec). Electron heating in the plasma is caused primarily by Ohmic dissipation of currents in the shock structure and piston. Plasma densities (0.5-3.5x1016 cm-3)agree well with shock theory predictions. Effects Of Boundary Layer Flow Control Using Plasma Actuator Discharges

This study addresses the usage and effects of atmospheric plasma discharges on the near wall flow conditions for a Pak-B low-pressure turbine blade. A plasma actuator was built normal to the freestream flow in a low-speed wind tunnel. The test section of the wind tunnel had a contoured upper wall geometry designed to mimic the suction side of a Pak-B turbine blade. A high frequency ac voltage source supplied three voltages in the kilovolt range at four Reynolds numbers in the experiment, between 10,000 and 103,000. The effect of the plasma on the near-wall boundary layer conditions was evaluated at each of the Reynolds numbers and each of the three voltage levels. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to determine the 2D boundary layer characteristics of the flow. This research showed that the plasma discharges were able to dramatically increase the flow velocity near the wall; however, the plasma was unable to reattach an already detached boundary layer. Alternative Pulse Detonation Engine Ignition System Investigation Through Detonation Splitting

A Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE) combusts fuel air mixtures through a form of combustion: detonation. The resulting change in momentum produces thrust. Recent PDE research has focused on designing working subsystems. This investigation continued this trend by examining ignition system alternatives. Existing designs required spark plugs in each separate thrust tube to ignite premixed reactants. A single thrust tube could require the spark plug to fire hundreds of times per second for long durations. The goal was to minimize complexity and increase reliability by limiting the number of ignition sources. This research examined using a continuously propagating detonation wave as both a thrust mechanism and an ignition system requiring only one initial ignition source. This investigation was a proof of concept for such an ignition system. First a systematic look at single tube geometric effects on detonations was made. These results were used to further examine configurations for splitting detonations, physically dividing one detonation wave into two separate detonation waves. With this knowledge a dual thrust tube system was built and tested proving that a single spark could be used to initiate detonation in separate thrust tubes. Finally, a new tripping device for better deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) was examined. Existing devices induced DDT axially. High Altitude Airship Station-Keeping Analysis

Lighter-than-air vehicles were once widely utilized by most major militaries. The airship's extended range and flight endurance made them the optimal vehicle for surveillance and reconnaissance. These flight characteristics have created new interest in using lighter-than-air vehicles as high altitude surveillance and communications platforms. Future Department of Defense plans include high altitude airships that will operate at near space altitudes and take advantage of the low wind region in the upper atmosphere located at approximately 24 km. A high altitude airship could provide 24- hour coverage of a target area if operated in this low wind region. This study investigated the station-keeping abilities of two such high altitude airships: a large/fast design (AS #1) and a smaller/slower design (AS #2). The two baseline airship designs were subjected to the same simulated yearlong station-keeping mission using realistic upper atmospheric wind data over the designated target of Baghdad. Actual wind data was generated by the Navy's Fleet Numerical METOC Detachment and used to model the movements of both baseline airships. Their station-keeping capacity was determined by the duration of time each vehicle spent inside the targets coverage radius (552 km). The AS #1 design remained inside the operational radius for 87.67% of the year and the AS #2 design was only operational for 39.45% of the year. Neither airship maintained its station for the entire yearlong mission. This study concluded that advancements are required in propulsion or power production to decrease the size of the airship designs and increase the vehicles maximum velocity in order to counter the upper atmospheric winds.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Experimental Investigation of Oblique Wing Aerodynamics at Low Speed

In an effort to increase the range of missiles and guided bombs, the USAF is looking at options for new wing configurations. One such configuration being considered is oblique wings. An oblique wing is a wing that pivots about a point on the aircraft fuselage thereby having one side swept forward and the other swept aft. Additional interest is looking at a wing only configuration that also rotates with one wing tip forward of the other. Studies have shown that this configuration can provide less drag for a given lift at both supersonic cruise and subsonic loiter conditions. This experiment focused on the low speed performance of a missile model with an oblique wing. The wing was tested at seven different sweep angles and at two different speeds. In order to simulate the missile dropping from an aircraft the model was inverted over a stationary ground plane in the tunnel and tested at the same wing obliquity angles. Stalling was found at certain conditions including sweep angles of 0, 15, and 30 deg. The ground plane was shown to result in an increase in lift as well as an increase in drag. An Anion Characterization of a Constructed Wetland Used for Chlorinated Ethene Remediation

Chlorinated ethene's physical properties as well as ubiquitous state at DOD installations makes it a priority for innovative remediation efforts. Current techniques are expensive and time consuming to maintain. Constructed wetlands suggest an inexpensive and operational alternative to conventional technologies. Sub-surface flow wetlands provide the anaerobic zones necessary to reduce the recalcitrant chlorinated solvents prior to anaerobic or aerobic mineralization of its daughter products. A vertical flow cell to include sequential sedimentary layers of two hydric soil lifts and a mix of hydric soil and woody compost was the subject of this investigation. This study focused on the statistical significance among the three constructed strata. Concentrations of mono-carboxylic acids and other anions are indicators of the reductive conditions necessary for remediation. Acid anion concentrations were expected to be higher in the assumed anaerobic strata of the constructed cell as a result of the fermentation of humic substances. Decreases in sulfate and nitrate were also expected over the upward flowing, wetland profile due to the reductive, anoxic conditions. Evidence in this study validate these assumptions and suggest that constructed wetlands are a viable alternative to current remediation methods. A Century Long Pursuit of Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks

The United States has dramatically increased its production of alternative fuels over the past seven years. With the passing of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), alternative fuel production will increase in the United States over 700% from 2005 levels. However, the pursuit of petroleum alternatives is not a recent trend. Over the last 100 years, various nations have pursued petroleum alternatives with varying levels of success. This research focuses on the historical development of 10 leading alternative fuels and feedstocks. Through a thorough literature review we will identify commonalities among these fuels and feedstocks which have hindered their adoption. Further, the research evaluates the 10 alternative fuels and feedstocks with text mining software to support findings from the literature review. This research finds that alternative fuels face significant challenges with regards to environmental impacts, technological maturity, and societal costs. Further, these petroleum alternatives have rarely been economical solutions. Thermal Characterization of a Hall Effect Thruster

The thermal characteristics of a Hall thruster directly influence thruster and spacecraft design. High temperatures affect the magnetic coil capabilities and cause higher insulator erosion rates, influencing both thruster performance and lifetime. The Hall thruster transfers heat through both radiation and conduction, and the spacecraft must handle this additional thermal energy. An infrared camera provides a non-intrusive method to analyze the thermal characteristics of an operational Hall thruster. This thesis contains the thermal analysis of a Busek Co. Inc. 200 W Hall thruster, using a FLIR ThermaCAM SC640 infrared camera. The Space Propulsion Analysis and System Simulator Laboratory at the Air Force Institute of Technology on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base provided the location for thruster set up and operation. The infrared camera furnishes the surface temperatures for the entire thruster, and approximates the transient heating behavior during start up, steady state, and shut down. Thermocouples verify and correct the camera data. Experimentally determined emissivities characterize the materials of the thruster. In addition, a view factor analysis between the camera pixels and the alumina sprayed portion of the cathode determines the exchange of radiation between the pixels and cathode surface. This process develops a technique to map surface temperatures of complex geometries with confidence in the actual values. Accurately mapping the surface temperatures of a Hall Effect thruster will improve both thruster efficiency and lifetime, and predict the thruster's thermal load on a satellite.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Crew Exploration Vehicle Skip Entry Trajectory

This research effort develops a program using MATLAB to solve the equations of motion for the atmospheric reentry of the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) which is assumed to be in the phase of a lunar return trajectory that could be initiated any time during the mission. The essential reason for this research is to find a solution for the problem of an unplanned lunar return in addition to the normal procedures. Unlike Apollo type missions, the CEV would still be able to land on any preplanned available landing sites without any additional delay. In Apollo type missions, the return phase had to be initiated in a restricted time window so that the crew module could enter the atmosphere at the preplanned time and be able to land at the planned landing site. Using skip entry procedures, landing location and time will be more accurate in addition to having the time flexibility for reentry. Comparative Analysis of Mobility Management Schemes in a Low Earth Orbit Satellite Network

In the 60's the United Status and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics engaged in a "space race" to be the first to put a man on the moon. Today, the space race is between large multinational telecommunication corporations with the winner receiving the financial rewards by providing communication services to the billions without even a simple telephone. Many entrants are using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to provide the communications infrastructure, but the number of customers a satellite can support is limited by bandwidth available. This resource must be used efficiently, and this involves reducing the management overhead. This thesis investigates one aspect of management overhead, the bandwidth cost associated with mobility management. This thesis provides a performance analysis of three different mobility management topologies and their associated protocols when used in a LEO satellite constellation. Simulations were developed to compare two aspects of mobility management protocols. Disturbance Observer

A new flight controller was evaluated through piloted simulation and flight test conducted at the USAF Test Pilot School. The controller, commonly called a disturbance observer, uses inertial sensor feedback routed through a simple control architecture that acts to force the desired response while rejecting sensor noise and atmospheric disturbances. The investigation included both handling qualities testing in the Octonian simulator at the Air Force Research Laboratories Air Vehicle Directorate, and initial flight test conducted as part of a Test Management Project at the USAF TPS. Simulation produced positive results with desired performance throughout a wide flight envelope. In addition, the desired response of the aircraft was easily modified by changing variables within the controller. Flight test was conducted on the Variable-stability In-flight Simulator and Test Aircraft (VISTA). Twelve test sorties totaling 16.4 flight hours were conducted and culminated in multiple landings at Edwards AFB, CA. Time delay inherent in the VISTA resulted in the requirement to gain down the control surface command signal. Sensor noise was amplified and caused a control surface 'buzz." Flying qualities exhibited lower damping and frequency than 'desired' yet were consistent throughout a larger flight envelope. Post flight analysis resulted in the determination of ways to reduce the noise causing the 'buzz' and improve the flying qualities by adjusting the controller's 'desired dynamics.'This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. A Systems Engineering Approach to Integrated Structural Health Monitoring for Aging Aircraft

The United States Air Force and many of its Coalition partners have extended the original service life of some of their aging aircraft due to fiscal constraints. This life extension often requires increased periodic and in-depth inspections, increasing maintenance costs and resulting in longer periods of aircraft downtime. An integrated structural health monitoring system (ISHMS) for aging aircraft may reduce the cur- rent inspection burden, and thus decrease costs and system downtime. This thesis developed a generic systems engineering process to describe the system definition for an ISHMS installed on a non-specific aging aircraft. The system definition developed in this thesis followed the Vee Model for systems development and serves as a starting point for future research and/or development efforts in this field. User analysis, user requirements, system requirements, and some Department of Defense Architecture Framework system architectures formed the basis for the generic systems engineering process presented. Furthermore, mathematical simulations compared the failure rate and number of inspections for a scenario without an ISHMS to a scenario with an ISHMS. A Nonlinear Pre-Filter to Prevent Departure And/or Pilot-Induced Oscillations Due to Actuator Rate Limiting

Closed loop instability caused by excess phase lag induced by actuator rate limiting has been suspected in many aircraft departures from controlled flight and pilot-induced oscillations (PIO). As part of the joint Air Force Institute of Technology/Test Pilot School (AFIT/TPS) program, a nonlinear rate limiter pre-filter (RLPF) was developed to minimize the phase lag induced by rate limiting. RLPF performance was evaluated inside the feedback path, but primary emphasis was on the pilot command path. Closed loop computer and motion-based flight simulations were conducted to prepare for the flight test. The HAVE FILTER flight test project was flown using the NF-16D Variable Stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA) aircraft and evaluated using a software rate limit (SWRL) with and without an RLPF on the pilot command path. A programmable heads-up-display (HUD) was used to generate a fighter tracking task. Meeting U.S. Defense Needs in Space

U.S. defense industrial base (DIB) deterioration and increased DOD interest in space exploitation highlights the U.S. satellite industry as one DIB sector requiring analysis. Despite DIB problems, this industry must maintain the capability to produce advanced satellites for the DOD. Commercial-Military Integration (CMI) will, according to experts, eliminate problems inherent with a separate DIB. This research focused on investigating satellite industry capability to meet DOD space requirements. Through literature review, case study analysis and interviews, effects of a shrinking DIB on the satellite industry were determined. A model for DIB strength was developed and analyzed through literature review. General Electric Aircraft Engines (GEAE) case study showed the potential for commercializing the DIB. The subsonic aerodynamic performance of a blended wing body aircraft constructed using selective laser sintering was assessed in the AFIT low-speed wind tunnel. The scaled-down model of a strike tanker aircraft consisted of a shaped fuselage and sweptback wings. The Reynolds number, based on mean wing chord, during testing was on the order of 105 while the Mach number ranged from 0.10 to 0.20. The model evaluation and analysis process included force and moment measurements acquired from a wind tunnel balance, pressure data measured with 8 taps located on the model's upper surface, a comparison to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions acquired in a parallel study conducted by AFRL/VAAC, and global pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurements. Paint measurements were compared to pressure tap data to ensure their accuracy while lift and drag coefficients, as well as pitching and rolling moments were examined to determine performance characteristics, including stability attributes and aircraft stall. One of the most interesting results was the striking difference in the force and moment measurements before and after the paint was applied to the surface. The average surface roughness, Ra, was measured with a profilometer and was found to have increased from approximately 0.3 m to 0.7 m when the paint was applied. When traditional 2-D boundary layer approaches to assessing the effect of roughness, the 0.7 m value falls well below the threshold at which one would anticipate roughness to have any effect. There is support in archival literature for the notion that roughness effects are more pronounced in a 3-D boundary layer, and the pitching moment data and the PSP data indicate that the for the painted model, there is a gradual onset of wing stall marching inward from the wingtips toward the body. By contrast, the force and, in particular, the pitching moment data suggests that the onset of wing stall is sudden across the entire wing for the unpainted case. Critical Design Parameters for Pylon-Aided Gaseous Fuel Injection Upstream of a Flameholding Cavity

The Air Force Institute of Technology and the AFRL are investigating means to increase the efficiency of fuel-air mixing into supersonic flow. Previous work has shown much promise in increasing the penetration and mixing of a fuel-air mixture into the freestream by injecting fuel behind small triangular pylons. Pylon-aided fuel injection has also shown to lift the fuel plume off the combustor floor; this floor-gap prevents the ignition of fuel seeded in the boundary layer. In this paper twenty-one pylons of varying widths, heights, and lengths were examined in four specific test matrices within a CFD environment. Pylons in test matrix 1 maintained a constant height and length while varying the pylon width. Test matrix 2 and 3 varied the absolute height of two different pylons from test matrix 1; scaling the pylons height and maintaining a constant leading edge wedge angle and width to height ratio. The final test matrix varied the length of pylons while keeping the height and width fixed. Development of a Comprehensive Digital Avionics Curriculum for the Aeronautical Engineer

The purpose of this research was to develop a comprehensive digital avionics curriculum that will serve the needs of aeronautical engineering students at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Due to the closing of the aeronautical engineering program at the Naval Postgraduate School, and the subsequent requirement to establish a digital avionics specialty course sequence at AFIT, a mature avionics curriculum does not yet exist that satisfies the needs of graduates who will serve as aeronautical engineers involved with the development, integration, testing, fielding, and supporting of military avionics systems as part of the overall aircraft system. Research was conducted through a comprehensive literature review and the use of a Delphi Technique survey process. 28 panel members representing the military, academe, and industry participated in a three round survey process that sought to identify the desired attributes of a newly-graduated engineer and the specific subject areas of study that should be included within the avionics curriculum. The result of this research was the development of a proposed three course curriculum that will instill the desired attributes within the aeronautical engineers and provide them with the avionics knowledge required at the correct level of proficiency. X-Hale

In conjunction with the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the University of Michigan has designed and is currently building a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) experimental high altitude long endurance (X-HALE) aircraft to collect non-linear aeroelastic data to validate HALE aircraft design codes developed by academia, industry, and the federal government. While X-HALE is representative of HALE aircraft, the manufacturing and evaluation techniques are applicable to larger full size HALE aircraft such as the concepts being developed under Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA's) Vulture program. This paper documents the development of the X-HALE model to date including a history of the programmatic decisions, basic model configuration, geometric considerations, sensor and system architecture, and manufacturing challenges. Lessons learned from the prototyping include the evolutionary growth of X-HALE's joiner blocks and the manufacturing process of the composite wings. Furthermore, late in the design process, a series of aeroelastic simulations using the Nonlinear Aeroelastic Simulation Toolbox (NAST) developed at the University of Michigan demonstrated the need for a rotating vertical/horizontal stabilizer to aid in the recovery of the vehicle from unstable nonlinear coupled lateral dynamic "dutch roll like" motion. Attitude Model of a Reaction Wheel/Fixed Thruster Based Satellite Using Telemetry Data

Attitude determination of satellites is normally the job of inertial instruments, such as gyroscopes, or through sensing instruments, such as star trackers orGlobal Positioning Satellites (GPS). Satellite health monitoring systems watch and determine if the satellite deviates from its normal operating attitudeorientation. Knowing the orientation of a satellite is essential in being able to control it in order to complete the satellite's designated mission. While there area multitude of ways to determine a satellite's orientation, very little research has been done on determining if the attitude of a satellite can be determineddirectly from telemetry data of the attitude control systems and an accurate spacecraft model. The fidelity of a satellite attitude determination model requiredto get reasonable predictions from using only telemetry data of the attitude controllers, such as thruster on/off indicators and reaction wheel rotor speeds, isinvestigated. Experimental tests using telemetry data received from the Air Force Institute of Technology's (AFIT) Simulated Satellite, SimSat, is used inverifying a Matlab model which outputs SimSat's orientation from SimSat's reaction wheel and thruster telemetry data. Characterization of UAV Performance and Development of a Formation Flight Controller for Multiple Small UAVS

The Air Force Institute of Technology's (AFIT) Advanced Navigation Technology (ANT) Center has recently delved into the research topic of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). One area of particular interest is using multiple small UAVs cooperatively to improve mission efficiency, as well as perform missions that couldn't be performed using vehicles independently. However, many of these missions require that the UAVs operate in close proximity with each other. This research lays the foundation required to use the ANT Center's UAVs for multi-vehicle missions (e.g. cooperatively) by accomplishing two major goals. First, it develops test procedures that can be used to characterize the tracking performance of a small UAV being controlled by a waypoint guided autopilot. This defines the size of the safety zones that must be maintained around each vehicle to ensure no collisions, assuming no, as yet unspecified, collision avoidance algorithm is being implemented. Secondly, a formation flight algorithm is developed that can be used to guide UAVs relative to each other using a waypoint guided autopilot. This is done by dynamically changing the waypoints. Such an approach gives a wrap-around method of cooperatively controlling UAVs that can only be guided waypoint-to-waypoint. For both components of this research, tests were conducted using a hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) simulation before validating through flight testing. Comparative Analysis of a High Bypass Turbofan Using a Pulsed Detonation Combustor

It has been proposed that the implementation of a pulsed detonation combustor in a high-bypass turbofan engine would result in an engine that is both more efficient and more reliable. The validity of the performance claims are evaluated based on a comparison between the baseline and hybrid turbofans as modeled in the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS). The engine cycle of the baseline high-bypass turbofan is evaluated and compared using both the Aircraft Engine Design System (AEDsys) and NPSS programs. The baseline engine agreed to within 1% on the net thrust calculation and specific fuel consumption between the two programs. Differences are traceable to the variation in specific heat models and to different methods of calculating temperature across the turbine and compressor components. The hybrid pulsed detonation engine model shares a common architecture with the baseline turbofan model. Inlet mass flow and core mass flow are maintained, but the combustor of the baseline engine is replaced with a pulsed detonation combustor for the hybrid engine. The effect of detonation on the core airflow is calculated using a closed form solution of the Chapman-Jouguet Mach number with a total energy correction applied. Cycle time is calculated to provide a reasonable estimate of frequency for the user input geometry. Effects of sub-component design choices within the pulsed detonation combustor are evaluated using simple parametric studies. These studies are used to select an optimal architecture for the combustor. The effects of detonation are accounted for by applying pressure and temperature losses to the fluid exiting the combustor. A parametric study was performed to demonstrate what level of loss continues to yield a more efficient engine. Results show improvement in thrust specific fuel consumption with careful selection of combustor design parameters. Application of Sliding Mode Methods to the Design of Reconfigurable Flight Control Systems

Observer-based sliding mode control is investigated for application to aircraft reconfigurable flight control. A comprehensive overview of reconfigurable flight control is given, including, a review of the current state-of-the-art within the subdisciplines of fault detection, parameter identification, adaptive control schemes, and dynamic control allocation. Of the adaptive control methods reviewed, sliding mode control (SMC) appears very promising due its property of invariance to matched uncertainty. An overview of sliding mode control is given and its remarkable properties are demonstrated by example. Sliding mode methods, however, are difficult to implement because unmodeled parasitic dynamics cause immediate and severe instability. This presents a challenge for all practical applications with limited bandwidth actuators. One method to deal with parasitic dynamics is the use of an asymptotic observer in the feedback path. Observer-based SMC is investigated, and a method for selecting observer gains is offered. An additional method for shaping the feedback loop using a filter is also developed. It is shown that this SMC prefilter is equivalent to a form of model reference hedging. A complete design procedure is given which takes advantage of the sliding mode boundary layer to recast the SMC as a linear control law. Frequency domain loop shaping is then used to design the sliding manifold. Finally, three aircraft applications are demonstrated. An F-18/HARV is used to demonstrate a SISO pitch rate tracking controller. It is also used to demonstrate a MIMO lateral-directional roll rate tracking controller. The last application is a full linear six degree-of-freedom advanced tailless fighter model. Laser Dot Projection Photogrammetry and Force Measurement for Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles

The purpose of this research was to develop testing methods capable of analyzing the performance of a miniature flapping-wing mechanism that can later be adapted to a flapping wing micro air vehicle (MAV). A previously designed and built flapping only mechanism was used for testing, while a previously designed flapping and pitch mechanism was fabricated utilizing an Objet Eden 500V 3-dimensional printer and its operation demonstrated. The flapping mechanism was mounted on a six component force balance. Force and moment data were collected for a variety of wing sets at different flapping frequencies. The testing was conducted using wings composed of aluminum tubing and/or stainless steel wire for frame material, and thin latex as membrane material. The normal and axial force averages were taken with the force balance and compared. The axial force measurement was verified using an air bearing table and a load cell as a secondary means of measurement. Time accurate force data was also taken. An Investigation Into Robust Wind Correction Algorithms for Off-the-Shelf Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Autopilots

This research effort focuses on developing methods to design efficient wind correction algorithms to "piggy-back" on current off-the-shelf Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) autopilots. Autonomous flight is certainly the near future for the aerospaceindustry and there exists great interest in defining a system that can guide and controlsmall aircraft with high levels of accuracy. The primary systems required to command thevehicles are already in place, but with only moderate abilities to adjust for dynamicenvironments (i.e., wind effects), if at all. The goal of this research is to develop asystematic procedure for implementing efficient and robust wind effects corrections toexisting autopilots used on small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The research willinvestigate the feasibility of an external dynamic environment control algorithm as ameans of improving current, off-the-shelf autopilot technology relating to small UAVs.The research then presents three main focuses. First, a determination of the estimatedwinds utilizing the existing, on-board sensors. Second, the development of a windcorrection algorithm that incorporates simple mathematical principals to counter the 2-Dimensional wind forces acting on the aircraft; and third, the integration of that windcompensator into the on-board navigational system. This "piggy-back" algorithm mustassimilate smoothly with the current GPS technologies to provide acceptable and safeflight path following. Performance Characterization of a Novel Plasma Thruster to Provide a Revolutionary Operationally Responsive Space Capability With Micro- and Nano-Satellites

Few options currently exist to provide propulsion for extremely small satellites due to design constraints on power, volume, and weight. However, future operation will require a capability to conduct orbital maneuvers, momentum dumping, and precision pointing for these low cost satellites. The research presented here represents the first effort to operate and quantify the performance of a new micro plasma thruster design which provides a novel solution to these disparate competing constraints. The thruster in this study represents a deviation from traditional circular Hall thruster design practices, because it eschews a central magnetic circuit, which results in nearly parallel electric and magnetic field lines within the thruster discharge channel. This design decision reduces thruster complexity and thermal susceptibility, but it also reduces the ionization efficiency. The cornerstone of this study involved the direct measurement of thrust in order to quantify the efficiency and specific impulse of this innovative thruster. The investigation also included characterization of the thruster exhaust plume, voltage-current characteristics, and operating limits. Capillary Flow in an Interior Corner

The design of fluids management processes in the low-gravity environment of space requires an accurate model and description of capillarity-controlled flow in containers of irregular geometry. Here we consider the capillary rise of a fluid along an interior corner of a container following a rapid reduction in gravity. The analytical portion of the work presents an asymptotic formulation in the limit of a slender fluid column, slight surface curvature along the corner, small inertia, and low gravity. New similarity solutions are found and a list of closed form expressions is provided for flow rate and column length. In particular, it is found that the flow is proportional to t(exp 1/2) for a constant height boundary condition, t(exp 2/5) for a spreading drop, and t(exp 3/5) for constant flow. In the experimental portion of the work, measurements from a 2.2s drop tower are reported. An extensive data set, collected over a previously unexplored range of flow parameters, includes estimates of repeatability and accuracy, the role of inertia and column slenderness, and the effects of corner angle, container geometry, and fluid properties. USAF Pilot Perceptions of Workload Assessment in a Combat or High-Threat Environment

This study analyzed the self-reported survey responses of 219 Air Force Pilots concerning their perceptions of workload assessment in a combat or a high-threat environment. The first objective of this study was to determine and compare the combat workload factors of varying importance in combat workload assessment by aircraft and mission type flown. The second objective was to examine the pilots' perception of combat mission in-flight workload. A stepwise regression model to predict the pilots' perceptions of in-flight workload using pilots' characteristic data was explored. Research conclusion varied among aircraft types. Combat workload items indicated, as "distractingly" important were similar for all aircraft types, while items in lower level of importance were impacted by aircraft type. Mean Combat Workload (CWL) scores of pilots from each aircraft type were not significantly different. Overall, it was concluded that surveying pilots who had flown in combat or high-threat environments provided useful responses to assess pilot workload; however, findings based on subjective assessments, provide tentative grounds for further research.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Reliability and Productivity Modeling for the Optimization of Separated Spacecraft Interferometers

As technological systems grow in capability, they also grow in complexity. Due to this complexity, it is no longer possible for a designer to use engineering judgement to identify the components that have the largest impact on system life cycle metrics, such as reliability, productivity, cost, and cost effectiveness. One way of identifying these key components is to build quantitative models and analysis tools that can be used to aid the designer in making high level architecture decisions. Once these key components have been identified, two main approaches to improving a system using these components exist: add redundancy or improve the reliability of the component. In reality, the most effective approach to almost any system will be some combination of these two approaches, in varying orders of magnitude for each component. Therefore, this research tries to answer the question of how to divide funds, between adding redundancy and improving the reliability of components, to most cost effectively improve the life cycle metrics of a system. While this question is relevant to any complex system, this research focuses on one type of system in particular: Separate Spacecraft Interferometers (SSI). Quantitative models are developed to analyze the key life cycle metrics of different SSI system architectures. Next, tools are developed to compare a given set of architectures in terms of total performance, by coupling different life cycle metrics together into one performance metric. Optimization tools, such as simulated annealing and genetic algorithms, are then used to search the entire design space to find the "optimal" architecture design. Sensitivity analysis tools have been developed to determine how sensitive the results of these analyses are to uncertain user defined parameters. Handling Qualities Evaluation of a Supersonic Tailless Air Vehicle

This thesis presents the results of a handling qualities evaluation of a supersonic tailless air vehicle. The 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review mandated the need for the next generation of long-range strike aircraft by 2018. Due to speed and stealth requirements, this resulted in a tailless aircraft with an instantaneous center of rotation located well forward of that of a conventional aircraft. This thesis examines how this center of rotation affected pilot handling qualities ratings. This effect should have been the most pronounced during approach and landing, and was where the testing focused. The goal of this research was to develop a systematic procedure for evaluating the handling qualities of this aircraft, and to determine how different pilot flying techniques or pilot-inceptor interactions influenced them.
