A Systems Engineering Approach to Integrated Structural Health Monitoring for Aging Aircraft
The United States Air Force and many of its Coalition partners have extended the original service life of some of their aging aircraft due to fiscal constraints. This life extension often requires increased periodic and in-depth inspections, increasing maintenance costs and resulting in longer periods of aircraft downtime. An integrated structural health monitoring system (ISHMS) for aging aircraft may reduce the cur- rent inspection burden, and thus decrease costs and system downtime. This thesis developed a generic systems engineering process to describe the system definition for an ISHMS installed on a non-specific aging aircraft. The system definition developed in this thesis followed the Vee Model for systems development and serves as a starting point for future research and/or development efforts in this field. User analysis, user requirements, system requirements, and some Department of Defense Architecture Framework system architectures formed the basis for the generic systems engineering process presented. Furthermore, mathematical simulations compared the failure rate and number of inspections for a scenario without an ISHMS to a scenario with an ISHMS. The UAV Continuous Coverage Problem
The purpose of this research is to develop a method to find an optimal UAV cyclic schedule to provide maximum coverage over a target area to support an ISR mission. The goal is to reach continuous coverage. UAV continuous coverage of a target area is crucial for the success of an ISR mission. Even the smallest coverage gap may jeopardize the success of the mission. Ideally it is desirable to obtain continuous coverage of a target area but the stochastic nature of the problem makes continuous coverage without gaps unlikely. However, it is still possible to obtain a high coverage rate. Coverage gaps may occur at handoff from one UAV to another. We first study a deterministic model with identical UAVs and derive the minimum number of required UAVs to ensure continuous coverage. Continuous coverage is possible only in the deterministic setting. The model provides valuable insights on the parameters driving the UAV performance coverage. It is shown that the loitering and the roundtrip times are the most impacting parameters driving the performance coverage of the UAVs. Optimal Spacecraft Attitude Controlusing Aerodynamic Torques
This thesis introduces a method of three-axis spacecraft attitude control using only aerodynamic torques. Attitude actuation is achieved using four control panels mounted on the rear of a cubical spacecraft bus. The controller consists of an outer loop using linear state feedback to determine desired control torque and an inner loop to choose appropriate control panel angles. The inner loop uses a Jacobian-based approachto invert the nonlinear relationship between panel angles and generated torque. Controller performance is evaluated via simulations, which show that three-axis control is possible over a range of initial angles and angular rates. Detonation Propagation Through Ducts in a Pulsed Detonation Engine
Development of a continuously operating pulsed detonation engine (PDE) without a high energy ignition system or a deflagration-to- detonation transition (DDT) device will increase engine efficiency, reduce cost, improve performance, and reduce weight. This report is a study of configurations that allow a consistent and predictable transition of a detonation from one detonation tube to second tube. The intent was, via visualization of detonation propagation through a cross-over tube, to develop a cross-over passage leading to minimization of energy losses and effective and repeatable tube-to-tube initiation. Detonation tube cross-over width, cross-over geometry and fuels were varied to determine their effect on tube-to-tube detonation initiation. The cross-over detonations studied decoupled into and out of the cross-over tube due to propagation as subcritical spherical detonations. Multimission Aircraft Design Study, Payload
It is proposed that a Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) be prepared to combine some or all the functions of the aging AWACS, JSTARS, RIVET JOINT, COMPASS CALL, and ABCCC fleet. Three different thesis studies have been developed by three Air Force Institute of Technology GSE students to show the feasibility of replacing the current aging fleet with one or more MMA platforms. This is the thesis in which the payload issues have been examined. Within this thesis, two different alternative architectures, which are One Tail Number and Different Tail Numbers including nine different configurations, have been considered. Estimated payload characteristics of these alternatives have been compared to those of Boeing 767-400ER, which is the aircraft selected as the baseline for MMA platform. The Aerodynamic Performance of the Houck Configuration Flow Guides
In an effort to explore efficient wing designs for UAV's, the Air Force is investigating the patented Houck Aircraft Configuration, which is a joined-wing aircraft with curved flow guides of varying camber connecting the upper and lower wingtips. Models were drawn in three-dimensions using Solidworks with upper and lower wings drawn as identical NACA 2412 airfoil sections for all models. A variety of airfoil sections between the upper and lower wingtips were drawn and rotated to achieve a combination of cant and angle of attack variation. Subsequently, a solid part was lofted through these sections and merged with the upper and lower wings. Each model was built by a rapid prototype machine. A six-component balance in the AFIT low-speed wind tunnel provided measurements yielding the aerodynamic data of each model. Comparisons are made to the same basic planform area without flow guides and to a case where the wingtips are joined with a flat plate. At a Reynolds number of 38K, the increase in skin friction drag outweighed any possible reduction of induced drag. Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation of Vortex Breakdown for a Delta Wing at High Angle of Attack
Using the commercially available FLUENT 3-D flow field solver, this research effort investigated vortex breakdown over a delta wing at high angle of attack (?簣) in preparation for investigation of active control of vortex breakdown using steady, alongcore blowing. A flat delta-shaped half-wing with sharp leading edge and sweep angle of 60 [degrees] was modeled at ?簣 = 18 [degrees] in a wind tunnel at Mach 0.04 and Reynolds number of 3.4 x 10 5. A hybrid (combination of structured and unstructured) numerical mesh was generated to accommodate blowing ports on the wing surface. Results for cases without and with along-core blowing included comparison of various turbulence models for predicting both flow field physics and quantitative flow characteristics. FLUENT turbulence models included Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), Renormalization Group k-?繕, Reynolds Stress (RSM), and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), as well as comparison with laminar and inviscid models. Mesh independence was also investigated, and solutions were compared with experimentally determined results and theoretical prediction. These research results show that, excepting the LES model for which the computational mesh was insufficiently refined and which was not extensively investigated, none of the turbulence models above, as implemented with the given numerical grid, generated a solution which was suitably comparable to the experimental data. Reusable Space Vehicle Ground Operations Baseline Conceptual Model
Modeling efforts for future space operation vehicles at the United States Air Force Research Lab's Air Vehicles Directorate have been focused towards the in flight mission. To better serve the research and development effort, a simulation of the ground operations is required allowing for trade-offs within turnaround operations and between the components that drive those procedures. Common Aero Vehicle Autonomous Reentry Trajectory Optimization Satisfying Waypoint and No-Fly Zone Constraints
To support the Global Strike mission, an autonomous trajectory optimization technique is presented to minimize the flight time, satisfy terminal and intermediate constraints, and remain within the specified vehicle heating and control limitations. "Waypoints" are specified for reconnaissance or multiple payload deployments and "no-fly zones" are specified for geopolitical restrictions or threat avoidance. The Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle (HCV) is used as a simplified two-dimensional platform to compare multiple solution techniques. The solution techniques include a unique geometric approach, an analytical dynamic optimization technique, and a numerical approach. This numerical technique is a direct solution method involving pseudospectral methods and nonlinear programming to converge to the optimal solution. The Common Aero Vehicle (CAV) is used as the test platform for the full three-dimensional reentry trajectory optimization problem. The culmination of this research is the verification of the optimality of this proposed numerical technique, as shown for both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional models. Application of Functionally Graded Materials in Aircraft Structures
A Functionally Graded Material (FGM) is a material which has a continuous variation of material properties through-the-thickness. This thesis will explore analysis of FGM flat plates and shell panels, and use FGM's unique characteristics to retrofit a cracked exhaust wash structure. FGMs are first characterized as flat plates under pressure and thermal loading. Next, FGM shell panels are characterized under thermal loading. Conclusions drawn from FGM characterization are used to develop a patch to retrofit a cracked aircraft exhaust wash structure. The exhaust wash structure is first analyzed to provide a baseline and then several FGM patches are evaluated on their ability to reduce stress and deflection. Pilot Mental Workload Calibration
The issue of predicting high pilot mental workload is important to the United States Air Force because lives and aircraft can be lost when errors are made during periods of mental overload and task saturation. Current research efforts use psychophysiological measures such as electroencephalography (EEG), cardiac, ocular, and respiration measures in an attempt to identify and predict mental workload levels. Existing classification methods successfully classify pilot mental workload using flight data from the same pilot on the same day but unsuccessfully classify workload using data from a different pilot on a different day. The primary focus of this effort is the development of a calibration scheme that allows a small subset of salient psychophysiological features developed using actual flight data for one pilot on a given day to accurately classify pilot mental workload for a separate pilot on a different day. Extensive raw data preprocessing, including 29 Fourier transformations for each second of flight data, prepares the feature data for analysis. Experimental Study of the Subsonic Aerodynamics of a Blended Wing Body Air Vehicle With a Focus on Rapid Technology Assessment
The subsonic aerodynamic performance of a blended wing body aircraft constructed using selective laser sintering was assessed in the AFIT low-speed wind tunnel. The scaled-down model of a strike tanker aircraft consisted of a shaped fuselage and sweptback wings. The Reynolds number, based on mean wing chord, during testing was on the order of 105 while the Mach number ranged from 0.10 to 0.20. The model evaluation and analysis process included force and moment measurements acquired from a wind tunnel balance, pressure data measured with 8 taps located on the model's upper surface, a comparison to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions acquired in a parallel study conducted by AFRL/VAAC, and global pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurements. Paint measurements were compared to pressure tap data to ensure their accuracy while lift and drag coefficients, as well as pitching and rolling moments were examined to determine performance characteristics, including stability attributes and aircraft stall. One of the most interesting results was the striking difference in the force and moment measurements before and after the paint was applied to the surface. The average surface roughness, Ra, was measured with a profilometer and was found to have increased from approximately 0.3 m to 0.7 m when the paint was applied. When traditional 2-D boundary layer approaches to assessing the effect of roughness, the 0.7 m value falls well below the threshold at which one would anticipate roughness to have any effect. There is support in archival literature for the notion that roughness effects are more pronounced in a 3-D boundary layer, and the pitching moment data and the PSP data indicate that the for the painted model, there is a gradual onset of wing stall marching inward from the wingtips toward the body. By contrast, the force and, in particular, the pitching moment data suggests that the onset of wing stall is sudden across the entire wing for the unpainted case. Satellite Attitude Control Using Atmospheric Drag
Attitude control is a requirement for most satellites. Many schemes have been devised over the years including control moment gyros, reaction wheels, spin stabi- lization and gravity gradient stabilization. For low Earth orbits, the Earth's atmo- sphere can have an affect on a satellite's orbit and attitude. Using the atmosphere to control spacecraft attitude has been researched in the past however very little re- search has been done using an active feedback control system to maintain spacecraft attitude. This research effort examines the feasibility of using the atmosphere to actively control a spacecraft's attitude using drag panels. Several variables affect the drag force, of which, projected area is the only variable that can be changed easily. Adding controllable drag panels to a satellite gives the ability to change the projected area as well as the location of the projected area. The result of manipulating the projected areas is a force that is not aligned with the center of gravity, resulting in an external torque on the spacecraft. Although these torques are very small, on the scale of micro-Newton meters and smaller, over time these torques can be used to change the spacecraft's attitude. A linear computer model was created using a proportional controller. This model was used to evaluate the effectiveness of using drag panels for attitude control. Surveillance Using Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
This study examines the performance and limitations of a heuristic cooperative control (CC) surveillance algorithm for multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under both simulation and demonstration. The algorithm generates Dubin's based paths and provides velocity feedback to accomplish simultaneous arrival onto a surveillance orbit around the target and maintains position while orbiting. The performance was tested under multiple wind conditions in simulation and actual winds during flight testing. Development of a Comprehensive Digital Avionics Curriculum for the Aeronautical Engineer
The purpose of this research was to develop a comprehensive digital avionics curriculum that will serve the needs of aeronautical engineering students at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Due to the closing of the aeronautical engineering program at the Naval Postgraduate School, and the subsequent requirement to establish a digital avionics specialty course sequence at AFIT, a mature avionics curriculum does not yet exist that satisfies the needs of graduates who will serve as aeronautical engineers involved with the development, integration, testing, fielding, and supporting of military avionics systems as part of the overall aircraft system. Research was conducted through a comprehensive literature review and the use of a Delphi Technique survey process. 28 panel members representing the military, academe, and industry participated in a three round survey process that sought to identify the desired attributes of a newly-graduated engineer and the specific subject areas of study that should be included within the avionics curriculum. The result of this research was the development of a proposed three course curriculum that will instill the desired attributes within the aeronautical engineers and provide them with the avionics knowledge required at the correct level of proficiency. Image Dependent Relative Formation Navigation for Autonomous Aerial Refueling
This research tests the feasibility, accuracy, and reliability of a predictive rendering and holistic comparison algorithm with use of an optical sensor to provide relative distance and position behind a lead or tanker aircraft. Using an accurate model of a tanker, an algorithm renders image(s) for comparison with actual collected images by a camera installed on the receiver aircraft. Based on this comparison, information used to create the rendered image(s) is used to provide the relative navigation solution required for autonomous air refueling. Given enough predicted images and processing time, this approach should reliably find an accurate solution. AFIT UAV Swarm Mission Planning and Simulation System
The purpose of this research is to design and implement a comprehensive mission planning system for swarms of autonomous aerial vehicles. The system integrates several problem domains including path planning, vehicle routing, and swarm behavior. The developed system consists of a parallel, multi-objective evolutionary algorithm-based path planner, a genetic algorithm-based vehicle router, and a parallel UAV swarm simulator. Both the path planner and the UAV swarm simulator are developed on AFIT's Beowulf parallel computer clusters. An extensive set of tests are performed to validate the system components as well as the system integration. Tests focus on two primary objectives: efficiency and effectiveness. The simulator is interfaced with a visualization system that serves as both an iterative design tool and as a mission playback tool. As a design tool, the visualization system provides rapid feedback, allowing developers to quickly observe the effects of model changes on its behavior. As a mission playback tool, decision makers and mission planners can view mission scenarios played out with different sets of parameters. Novel aspects of this research include: integrating terrain following technology into a swarm model as a means of detection avoidance, combining practical problems of path planning and routing into a comprehensive mission planning strategy, and the development of a swarm behavior model with path following capabilities. The culmination of this effort is the development of an extensible developmental model for swarm behavior. Comparative Analysis of Mobility Management Schemes in a Low Earth Orbit Satellite Network
In the 60's the United Status and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics engaged in a "space race" to be the first to put a man on the moon. Today, the space race is between large multinational telecommunication corporations with the winner receiving the financial rewards by providing communication services to the billions without even a simple telephone. Many entrants are using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to provide the communications infrastructure, but the number of customers a satellite can support is limited by bandwidth available. This resource must be used efficiently, and this involves reducing the management overhead. This thesis investigates one aspect of management overhead, the bandwidth cost associated with mobility management. This thesis provides a performance analysis of three different mobility management topologies and their associated protocols when used in a LEO satellite constellation. Simulations were developed to compare two aspects of mobility management protocols. Characterization of UAV Performance and Development of a Formation Flight Controller for Multiple Small UAVS
The Air Force Institute of Technology's (AFIT) Advanced Navigation Technology (ANT) Center has recently delved into the research topic of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). One area of particular interest is using multiple small UAVs cooperatively to improve mission efficiency, as well as perform missions that couldn't be performed using vehicles independently. However, many of these missions require that the UAVs operate in close proximity with each other. This research lays the foundation required to use the ANT Center's UAVs for multi-vehicle missions (e.g. cooperatively) by accomplishing two major goals. First, it develops test procedures that can be used to characterize the tracking performance of a small UAV being controlled by a waypoint guided autopilot. This defines the size of the safety zones that must be maintained around each vehicle to ensure no collisions, assuming no, as yet unspecified, collision avoidance algorithm is being implemented. Secondly, a formation flight algorithm is developed that can be used to guide UAVs relative to each other using a waypoint guided autopilot. This is done by dynamically changing the waypoints. Such an approach gives a wrap-around method of cooperatively controlling UAVs that can only be guided waypoint-to-waypoint. For both components of this research, tests were conducted using a hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) simulation before validating through flight testing. Twelve years later, when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon the world was breathless. That sort of imagination and hard work combined to make the United States' space program the premier exploration effort of the 20th century. The next great impossible task is to make space access affordable. Building a space elevator will generate the largest improvement in cost and capacity of any new space access technology. Space exploration is now a second rate topic. The media is more interested in stories about Britney Spears' latest folly or in reporting how many casualties occurred in Iraq or Afghanistan today. What will it take to reignite the public thirst for space exploration that everyone felt in 1969? Unfortunately the reasons for scaling back space exploration are too easy. It's too expensive. It doesn't offer enough benefits. It's a waste of time. Most reasons have their roots in the difficulty of getting to space in the first place. To cap it off, rockets are horribly inefficient in terms of fuel and weight. About 95% of what is on the launch pad is spent accelerating the remaining 5% into orbit. Subtract the structure of the rocket, and you can put a payload of 1-2% of launch weight into orbit. All that fuel costs a lot of money and rocket reusability has never been cheap or easy. Gaining Efficiencies in Air Traffic Control Through Leveraging New Radar Technology
This paper discusses how leveraging new radar technologies in the USAF Air Traffic Control (ATC) arena can produce significant gains in efficiencies. The USAF, in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other Department of Defense (DoD) services has procured a new radar system for ATC called Standard Terminal Automated Replacement System (STARS). This new STARS system has a unique ability to take radar feeds from multiple non-contiguous ATC regions and combining them into one co-located USAF ATC radar approach facility. This technology for combining ATC radar facilities allows for efficiencies and enhances in manpower and infrastructure costs in garrison as well as tactical operations. Headquarters for Air Combat Command notionalized this concept as an effort to address critical manpower shortfalls in the ATC career field. We created the concept and worked with USAF leadership to implement combining Minot Air Force Base's radar approach control at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Intermediate Aircraft Maintenance
Most combat aircraft systems today utilize three levels of repair capability; organizational, intermediate, and depot. This is referred to as three-level maintenance. The relative difficulty of the repair action typically increases from the organizational level through the intermediate and depot levels. Most of the time, "flight line" and minor repair actions are classified as organizational level repairs. These include removing and replacing line replaceable units (LRUs) and accomplishing minor repairs on the aircraft. Intermediate level, or off-equipment maintenance, require special equipment and more personnel proficiency than organizational level repairs. Intermediate level repairs include performing tests on LRUs and accomplishing needed repairs through the removal and replacement of faulty components called shop replaceable units (SRUs). Repair shop technicians conduct fault isolation procedures with test equipment to identify faulty components. If the repair of the LRU is beyond the capability of the intermediate repair shop then the asset is declared to be not repairable this station (NRTS) and is shipped to the Air Logistics Center (depot) for repair. Water: Vital to Life, Vulnerable to Terrorism The safety of US water systems took on new meaning as a result of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Today, the US has not adequately mitigated the bioterrorist threat to US water systems. The FBI has previously found a computer belonging to a person with direct ties to Osama bin Laden that contained architectural and engineering software related to dams and other water-retaining structures. Possible contamination of the water system would have a devastating physical and psychological effect on the United States population and economy. Contamination of a water system could consist of the use of biological agents or toxic materials such as metals, cyanide, organic solvents, and pesticides. Currently a vast majority of water facilities lack instrument sensors that can measure the toxicity of the potable water sources and securing these distribution systems is infeasible. The next terrorist attack will affect thousands of people and will incorporate patience and simplicity. These attacks will be against areas that society takes for granted and that are almost impossible to secure. The United States potable water supply system is one of these possible targets. Much like the recent foiled terrorist plot to attack the fuel distribution pipeline at JFK airport, the water distribution systems in the United States are designed to allow flexibility when the system suffers equipment failures or routine maintenance. It is this type of design that makes safeguarding the water supplies highly complex and costly. This design places pumping stations, holding tanks, electronically controlled valves and millions of miles of piping in remote and often obscure locations making them prime targets for terrorists. X37 Space Vehicle
The Air Force invested $16M in NASA's X-37 program and will have exclusive testing of two of these space platforms in FY 2001/2002. The platform will test new remotely controlled platforms for space launch and space presence that is a joint military and commercial project. Near-Space Vehicles
This paper analyzes current and future near-space technology. The discussion is at a non-space professional level that all military readers can comprehend and also relate to current operational scenarios. The emphasis of the research and analysis is to find the specifics of how near-space can bring effects to the battlefield in the very near future, as opposed to longer term projections and future concepts.The Air Force needs space-like effects with persistence at an affordable cost. Near-space is an area that has recently garnered increased military interest as an avenue to provide this capability. Traditional space assets in orbit provide phenomenal capabilities, but do so at what some would call a phenomenal cost. Is It Time for Space Debris Reduction Capabilities?
For over 50 years, space-faring nations have launched objects into space, resulting in the significant accumulation of debris. The amount of launches and debris-causing events outpaces the current removal rates for debris in the protected regions of Low Earth and Geosynchronous Orbits. Thus, it appears the space debris problem is increasing. Currently, debris must be larger than 10-cm in diameter to be tracked reliably. Existing treaties are outdated and in need of revision to include space debris and enforcement. The world is faced with an energy supply and demand challenge that greatly impacts the U.S. Air Force's ability to organize, equip, and train for today and tomorrow's war. For several decades the United States and its military became accustomed to relatively steady and cheap energy based upon petroleum. That model has been shattered during the past 5 years as a barrel of oil approached and passed an all time high of $112/barrel. The Air Force spent over $1.1 billion to operate its 166 installations in 2006. This paper looks at renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal technology available today that could potentially reduce the cost of operating each base. Unmanned Aircraft Systems
Routine UAS access to the NAS poses a variety of technological, regulatory, workload, and coordination challenges. This paper will focus on the ongoing effort in the United States (U.S.) to draft and implement regulatory guidance to integrate safe, routine, and efficient UAS operations in the NAS. The current Code of Federal Regulations governing unmanned aircraft operations does not adequately address the operation of this new type of aircraft. Specifically, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not allow unrestricted UAS operations in all classifications of airspace. A lack of regulatory guidance for UASs limits their operations and leads to a lack of airspace for UAS testing and evaluation. Evolving technological advancements and increased military and civilian demand have proven the need to fully integrate and capture all the regulatory requirements for UAS's to meet their full potential. The end goal is to have UASs operating in the NAS transparently. Thus, UASs must be able to function seamlessly in the current air traffic system with other general, civilian, and military aircraft and comply with all the regulatory requirements that manned aircraft must meet. China's Space Program and Its Implications for the United States
China became a serious member of the spacefaring community in 1985 and in response, the U.S. developed agreements to limit the economic impact on U.S. space programs and to control the spread of related technology. China charges less for a space launch than a U.S. firm does and so an economic threat to the livelihood of U.S. space industries exists. The precarious U.S. launch industry is already challenged by Arianespace. The U.S. is also concerned about transferring technology to China from U.S. satellite manufacturers. The technology involved in mating satellites to boosters, measuring stress on the satellite at launch, and the development of apogee kick motors is all transferable to missile technology and may aid China in its intercontinental ballistic missile programs. Not only has China been improving its own programs, it has also sold missiles and technologies to other countries such as Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, and India.
