The Farming Diaries of Thomas Pinniger, 1813-1847
From 1813 until his death in 1847, Thomas Pinniger kept a detailed daily account of the sheep and corn husbandry he practised first at Little Bedwyn Farm to 1825, and then as the owner of Beckhampton Farm in Avebury parish from 1829. These periods were separated by a stay on Sambourne Farm in Chippenham, when he was more an observer than an active farmer. These 'Farming Memorandums', as Pinniger described them, provide a fascinating and detailed record of the challenges that he faced throughout his long career. Farming practices and developments, prices of corn and livestock, and the weather were all recorded in detail. It is clear that they were not just kept for the sake of posterity, but as a body of knowledge and experience on which he could draw. His relations with his labourers and neighbours, not always cordial, add to the wealth of the content of the diaries. Having moved to Beckhampton, Pinniger bought the eponymously-named established coaching inn in the village. Stables were constructed for both the farm and the inn, with the latter specifically for race horses. The fortunes of the inn faltered with the coming of the railway in the early 1840s. As well as the obvious subject matter, Pinniger also noted the births, marriages and deaths of relatives, friends and acquaintances, revealing the social milieu in which he lived. Dates of funerals and of funeral services were also often provided, the latter rarely recorded in this period. He also provided a first hand account of the unrest of the Swing Riots of 1830, which he viewed as a serious threat. The years 1823 to 1838 have been transcribed, but the whole span is covered in the introduction. In keeping such meticulous daily records over so long a period, Thomas Pinniger stands as the principal representative of the class of yeoman farmers, from early to mid 19th-century Wiltshire.

Beef Cattle Fattening and It's Marketing System. The Case of Damot Pulasa Woreda, Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia

As the country has a large livestock population, which ranks first in Africa and tenth in the world, it has much to gain from the growing global markets for livestock products. Therefore, this study aims to give further inside how this can be achieved in the exemplary case of beef fattening. The study was conducted in the Southern Nation Nationality and People Regional Government in Wolaita Zone to assess beef cattle fattening and marketing system in the case of Damot Pulasa Woreda. In the present study stratified sampling method was used and a total of 120 households were selected for survey study. To collect the data both primary and secondary data source were used and the collected data were analyzed by using descriptive. The study indicated that the main purposes of beef cattle fattening were for 25, (78.1%) to start their fattening activity to replace the old oxen after the end of the plowing period and only small proportion 7, (21.9%) of the fatteners were income oriented respectively. The common beef cattle selection criteria were health condition, physical appearance, sex, age are 46.2%, 30.14%, 12.32%, 11.34% respectively. Major feed resources were natural pasture (56.25%), Maize and Enset tuber (31.25%), frushika (10%), grazing (2.5%). Beef cattle fattening constraints were feed shortage (34.4%), lack of capital (25%), market problem (15.6%), disease and parasite (9.375%), lack of extension service (9.375%), and drought (6.25%). The frequency of fattening per year was 21(65.6%) of cattle fatteners in the study area were fattening only one time per year and the rest 7(21.9%) and 4(12.5%) were fattening two times and three times per year respectively. Ecological Economic and Socio Ecological Strategies for Forest Conservation

Rnai for Plant Improvement and Protection
RNA interference (RNAi) has the potential to make major contributions towards sustainable crop production and protection with minimal environmental impacts compared to other technologies. RNAi is being developed and exploited both within plants (i.e. host-induced gene silencing, HIGS) and/or as topical applications (e.g. spray-induced gene silencing, SIGS) for targeting pest and pathogen genes and for manipulating endogenous gene expression in plants.
