Advances in Research on Vegetable Production Under a Changing Climate Vol. 1
A considerable change in climate at a global level will impact the vegetable cultivation and agriculture as a whole; subsequently affecting the world's food supply. Climate change per se is not necessarily harmful; the problems arise from extreme events that are difficult to predict (erratic rainfall patterns and unpredictable high and low temperatures), and consequently reduce crop productivity. Vegetables are in general more succulent (have 90% water) and are more sensitive to climatic vagaries. Sudden changes in temperature coupled with irregular precipitation at any phase of crop growth can affect the normal growth, flowering, pollination, fruit setting, fruit development and fruit ripening can decrease the yield. The irregular precipitation can also affect the soil salinity and is a major challenge in many vegetable growing areas. To mitigate the harmful impact of climatic change there is a urgent need to develop adequate adaptation strategies for adverse effect of climate change and the preference should be given on development of heat, cold, drought, flood and salinity stress tolerant genotypes along with climate proofing through conventional and non-conventional breeding techniques. Available evidence shows that there is a high probability of increase in the frequency and intensity of climate related natural hazards due to climate change and hence increases the potential threat due to climate change related natural disasters in the world. This book (Volume- I) will be basically useful for the researchers and postgraduate students with current challenges and mitigation strategies for increasing vegetable production under a changing climate.
A Lively Hive, A Biodynamic Beekeeping Guide for Honeybee Health
The revolutionary beekeeping method that is providing a radical return to healthy bee hives in the U.S. and around the world today is explained in detail in A Lively Hive. Author, Alex Tuchman, the director of Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary in Floyd, Virginia, walks the reader through both the philosophy and practical applications that have shown remarkable success rates. In the past five years, the catastrophic loss of 45% of U.S. honeybee colonies has been well documented. By contrast, in that same time period Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary has shown an astonishing low loss of only 12%. Tuchman shares the significant difference between beekeeping methods that exploit the honeybee for human agribusiness and alternative methods to beekeeping that are in line with the instincts and wisdom of the honeybees themselves. The amazing results, as it turns out, are found at heart in the relationship and communication between the honeybee and the human-that when we listen to what the bees are telling us, only then are we guided to best provide for the bees' needs in the physical world.
Cattle Country
As beef and cattle production progressed in nineteenth-century America, the cow emerged as the nation's representative food animal and earned a culturally prominent role in the literature of the day. In Cattle Country Kathryn Cornell Dolan examines the role cattle played in narratives throughout the century to show how the struggles within U.S. food culture mapped onto society's broader struggles with colonization, environmentalism, U.S. identity, ethnicity, and industrialization. Dolan examines diverse texts from Native American, African American, Mexican American, and white authors that showcase the zeitgeist of anxiety surrounding U.S. identity as cattle gradually became an industrialized food source, altering the country's culture while exacting a high cost to humans, animals, and the land. From Henry David Thoreau's descriptions of indigenous cuisines as a challenge to the rising monoculture, to Washington Irving's travel narratives that foreshadow cattle replacing American bison in the West, to Mar穩a Amparo Ruiz de Burton's use of cattle to connect race and imperialism in her work, authors' preoccupations with cattle underscored their concern for resource depletion, habitat destruction, and the wasteful overproduction of a single breed of livestock. Cattle Country offers a window into the ways authors worked to negotiate the consequences of the development of this food culture and, by excavating the history of U.S. settler colonialism through the figure of cattle, sheds new ecocritical light on nineteenth-century literature.

Psychotronics and a Biodynamic Garden
Dowsing and radionics are two practices and procedures for interpreting and interacting with the natural world. They nurture the processes of gardening, farming, and landscaping through communication with subtle levels of reality.Nature spirits and other forms of intelligence in nature play major roles. They can be readily contacted and nourished when we combine psychotronic methods with the traditional practices of a biodynamic approach. George Kuepper describes and discusses numerous procedures that have evolved from decades of working with agricultural radionics and recent research in his biodynamic garden. This guidebook to growing better food is well referenced, with numerous illustrations, photos, tables, and examples. Gardeners and farmers who want to improve their plants and harvests using sustainable methods will find practical help and much food for thought here."Psychotronics covers a range of modalities (including dowsing and radionics) that can be used to access and study the hidden reality behind our physical world. It provides us with practical means for investigating, navigating, and even changing this reality. Without a doubt, psychotronics is controversial and the amount of misinformation and disinformation surrounding it is dizzying. So, understand that what I'm presenting here is a working paradigm. It will explain how I have come to understand psychotronics and how I am using it." --George Kuepper (from the book)Includes 55 illustrations, diagrams, and charts.

Uncertainty on Agricultural Public Good and Externality Production. Implications for Domestic and International Agricultural Policy Design
Scientific Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: -, language: English, abstract: This article deals with the consequences of uncertainties about the societal valuation of landscape benefits and environmental costs for multiple policy goal trade-offs that may result when internalising external benefits and costs by abolishing commodity subsidies, introducing land subsidies and intermediate input taxes. Numerical results of an illustrative model of the German agricultural sector are presented and trade-off curves for farm income, environmental cost reduction and landscape benefits are discussed. If the relevant criterion for policy decisions was a simple aggregation of the single policy goal indicators with constant weights, the optimality of policy options would be rather robust to valuation errors. Expected exchange ratios between the different policy goals, however, can be severely distorted if policy-makers have wrong estimations of the true societal valuation of externalities. This may make targeted incentives that aim at a better orientation of agriculture towards societal demands appear too risky for policy-makers and finally leads to the blockage of policy changes. An appropriate policy portfolio should therefore comprise non-distorting compensations for negatively affected policy goals. The EU's commitment in the WTO to multifunctional agriculture has to be underlined by effective domestic policy reforms, if this concept is not to be discredited as an attempt to justify disguised protectionism.

Honey Bee Alchemy. A contemporary look at the mysterious world of bees, hive products and health
The book offered to the reader's attention is the author's translation of a book published in Poland in 2013. The book is addressed to the lovers of wildlife and honey bees, and to everyone interested in beekeeping products, their composition and medicinal properties. For Western European and American readers, Chapters 4 and 7, containing information about practically unknown in the West unconventional but very valuable beekeeping products, may be of particular interest. The author's scientific interests extend not only to the chemical composition and the origin of propolis, honey and other bee products, but also to the bee health. Unfortunately, in recent decades the bee health has noticeably deteriorated, resulting in many difficulties in beekeeping. The last Chapter of the book is devoted to the bee health and possible ways of their treatment, avoiding synthetic drugs with their unwanted side effects. The author's work in recent years is connected with these problems and it is no coincidence that the chapter devoted to the bee health has turned out to be the most revised and extended in comparison to the Polish edition. In preparing this publication, photographs were used, kindly provided to me by the Polish beekeeper Mrs. Teresa Porankiewicz-Bartkowiak, to whom I express my sincere gratitude.

The Chicken Coop Manual
People from all walks of life are increasingly interested in owning chickens. Some folks want them as a source of fresh eggs, either for themselves or the marketplace. Other individuals want to raise and butcher their own birds so that they know exactly what went into that meat. Some people enjoy poultry as companion animals, or love seeing these colorful birds out on the landscape. And some folks want chickens for their bug-hunting ability in the garden or pasture. Whatever the reason, small flock ownership is increasing, even in suburbia and particularly within urban centers. But how to house them? Many books already exist on various other aspects of poultry management: breeds, feeding, health, egg production, meat production, showing, and marketing. What about housing? Every chicken flock needs shelter of some kind. A number of books provide chicken coop plans for free or for a small fee. Yet there is a lot more to providing good housing, than merely picking out a house plan. Issues of predator control, vermin control, waste management, flock production, disease management, hygiene and sanitation - all these factors help determine whether a chicken coop will be a pleasant, healthy addition or a costly eyesore. The Chicken Coop Manual looks at all these topics and how they interact: Section I covers 18 different design criteria which flock owners and coop designers need to consider BEFORE choosing or building a coop. Section II looks at eight different chicken coop plans, using conventional stud construction, for flock sizes ranging from only a few birds, to a commercial-sized flock of 100 birds. Section III takes a look at 12 alternative housing and shelter options, and how they may be a flock owner's best bet for cost-effective, attractive, functional and practical flock ownership. Section IV provides a list of additional resources for flock owners - websites, books and getting-started articles which focus on, or address some aspect of, poultry housing. Flock owners who study and apply this manual will be able to: * familiarize themselves with issues which affect flock health, hygiene, safety, productivity and cost * determine whether a particular coop design will work for their particular circumstances * know how to meet any relevant building codes, covenants or regulatory requirements * maximize their birds' quality of life and their own enjoyment of that flock, for years to come. This book is also helpful for teachers, mentors, policy makers and/or regulators who need to become familiar with all the issues pertaining to flock housing and chicken coop design. Even experienced flock owners will find some helpful hints and new ideas within these chapters.
Swarm Management with Checkerboarding
What is Checkerboarding? A solution to prevent swarming that requires no intervention within the brood nest, increases colony size and therefore honey yields and replaces the resident queen through supersedure.Walter Wright, a retired NASA engineer, first invented the swarm prevention technique Checkerboarding. Join the three authors of this booklet for their take on the observational writings of Walter Wright by giving a simplified version of Wright's original texts, alongside their own findings. For many beekeepers swarming is an annual challenge. For those of us living in close proximity to non-beekeepers, there are particular sensitivities to be observed and swarming keeps us on our toes and preoccupies us through the late spring and early summer. There are whole books dedicated to swarming - the mechanics of it, how to recognise swarming, swarm prevention, swarm control measures and so on.The authors explain their recognition for the importance of swarming with respect to procreation and genetic diversity. They also realise the angst beekeepers suffer when we get that knock at the door from a neighbour that states 'your bees have swarmed into my garden/shed/porch'. And how can we deny that they are our bees?Even without the proximity of neighbours most beekeepers endure a sustained period of colony inspections, checking for early swarm indicators i.e. queen cells. Therefore, the solution to swarm prevention which does not involve extensive hive manipulations, inspections, mitigation measures, remains one of the holy grails of beekeeping.Checkerboarding, if it is carried out correctly, will prevent swarming and requires no intervention within the brood nest. The authors of this document carried out successful Checkerboarding during the December 2019 season on five colonies. Between the three of them, they had previously had swarms each year for the last 9 years. Sometimes many swarms per year and sometimes many per hive! In 2020 they had none. Some of the by-products of Checkerboarding include significant increases in colony size and therefore honey yields. Another is the resident queen is replaced through supersedure.'Checkerboarding' is simple to implement. What is more complicated is the understanding of the internal operations of the colony that make this system successful. The authors have written this booklet with a brief explanation of how to Checkerboard early on. You will also find more details of the colony dynamics and the common terminology used when discussing swarms in the 'Notes and Explanations' section of this booklet. This booklet is suitable for all UK beekeepers and is in an easy to follow format of how Checkerboarding can work for you.

Land and Wine
A tour of the French winemaking regions to illustrate how the soil, underlying bedrock, relief, and microclimate shape the personality of a wine. For centuries, France has long been the world's greatest wine-producing country. Its wines are the global gold standard, prized by collectors, and its winemaking regions each offer unique tasting experiences, from the spice of Bordeaux to the berry notes of the Loire Valley. Although grape variety, climate, and the skill of the winemaker are essential in making good wine, the foundation of a wine's character is the soil in which its grapes are grown. Who could better guide us through the relationship between the French land and the wine than a geologist, someone who deeply understands the science behind the soil? Enter scientist Charles Frankel. In Land and Wine, Frankel takes readers on a tour of the French winemaking regions to illustrate how the soil, underlying bedrock, relief, and microclimate shape the personality of a wine. The book's twelve chapters each focus in-depth on a different region, including the Loire Valley, Alsace, Burgundy, Champagne, Provence, the Rh繫ne valley, and Bordeaux, to explore the full meaning of terroir. In this approachable guide, Frankel describes how Cabernet Franc takes on a completely different character depending on whether it is grown on gravel or limestone; how Sauvignon yields three different products in the hills of Sancerre when rooted in limestone, marl, or flint; how Pinot Noir will give radically different wines on a single hill in Burgundy as the vines progress upslope; and how the soil of each ch璽teau in Bordeaux has a say in the blend ratios of Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon. Land and Wine provides a detailed understanding of the variety of French wine as well as a look at the geological history of France, complete with volcanic eruptions, a parade of dinosaurs, and a menagerie of evolution that has left its fossils flavoring the vineyards. Both the uninitiated wine drinker and the confirmed oenophile will find much to savor in this fun guide that Frankel has spiked with anecdotes about winemakers and historic wine enthusiasts-revealing which kings, poets, and philosophers liked which wines best-while offering travel tips and itineraries for visiting the wineries today.
Valorisation of Agro-Industrial Residues - Volume I: Biological Approaches
Agriculture and industry are the two most important economic sectors for various countries around the globe, providing millions of jobs as well as being the main source of income for these countries. Nevertheless, with the increasing demand for agricultural and industrial produce, huge amounts of waste are also being produced. Without proper management, this waste (both liquid and solid) poses a serious threat to overall environmental quality, mainly due to its toxicity and slow degradation processes. Current approaches are effective but would normally require huge capital investments, are labour intensive and generate potential hazardous by-products. As such, there is a need for alternative approaches that are cheaper, easier-to-handle and have a minimum potential impact on environmental quality. This book presents up-to-date approaches using biological techniques to manage the abundance of waste generated from agricultural and industrial activities. It discusses techniques such as bioconversion, biodegradation, biotransformation, and biomonitoring as well as the utilization of these wastes. A number of chapters also include individual case studies to enhance readers' understanding of the topics. This comprehensive book is a useful resource for anyone involved in agricultural and industrial waste management, green chemistry or biotechnology. It is also recommended as a reference work for graduate students and all agriculture and biotechnology libraries.

Les instruments aratoires des Gaules et de Germanie Superieure
This catalogue of the metal parts of ploughing implements from Gallia and Germania Superior is an expanded work based on the author's thesis 'Researches on the ploughing implements and the working on the soil in Gallia Belgica'. The essentially multidisciplinary methodology of this research, bearing in particular on technical studies of ploughing implements, necessitated the technical representation of metal parts in the form of a catalogue in addition to the customary archaeological drawings. This volume, therefore, most often uses these two forms of representation. A classification based on the use of the parts, 'socketed shares', 'tanged shares' and 'coulters', is employed. This catalogue contains 51 entries of socketed shares, 31 of tanged shares and 37 of coulters, representing in all 119 entries. Although inevitably incomplete, with data collection ending in 2000, it is the first catalogue of these types of metal parts to have been published for the Gallia provinces and Germania Superior. An accompanying textual analysis is provided by the same author in: BAR S1235, 2004 "Recherches sur les instruments aratoires et le travail du sol en Gaule Belgique" (ISBN 9781841715940).

The Book of the Farm
Replete with instruction and knowledge honed with experience, The Book of the Farm remains one of the finest agricultural guidebooks ever produced. The 19th century saw the maturation of farming in Western Europe, with intensive methods and efficiencies achieved as never before. Published in the 1840s and successively revised over subsequent decades, this book is a summation of the ingenuity of large-scale agriculture. The production of ever-greater harvests required skill; no longer could any farm be maintained by rudimentary methods taught by example - farming had become a sophisticated, professional discipline reliant upon science and machinery.Aimed at informing prospective students of farming, this work makes no secret of the difficulty and wits required of the modern farmer. Over 100 illustrations depict the tools required, from hoes and ploughs to the traction steam engines that served as forerunners to the modern tractor. Over 80 charts detail all manner of records: animal and crop weights, their prices on the market, mineral levels present in soil and fertilizer, costs of machinery and day-to-day operations. In all, The Book of the Farm is both a superb agricultural history and guide, filled with insight and techniques useful even in the modern day.

This collection features four peer-reviewed literature reviews on drought-resistant crops. The first chapter assesses the genes involved in drought and heat tolerance, as well as the physiological traits related to increased tolerance to abiotic stress in wheat. It reviews advances in our understanding of the molecular markers associated with these physiological traits, and the roles of key genes in determining a wheat plant's response to heat and drought stress. The second chapter discusses mechanisms of drought resistance in rice. It reviews ways of assessing drought tolerance performance, identifying genes promoting drought tolerance through quantitative trait loci (QLT) analysis, as well as breeding for drought tolerance. The third chapter highlights the genetic diversity and quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with the traits contributing to drought and heat tolerance in soybean. It also reviews genomic resources that can facilitate a better understanding of phenotype-genotype associations and formulate genomic-assisted breeding strategies. The final chapter addresses the polygenic nature of tolerance to drought and to heat in grain legumes. It reviews advances in understanding plant adaptation to stress, the assembly of molecular and phenotyping tools to support breeding and the development of tolerance through traditional and molecular breeding techniques.
Polyface Designs
A comprehensive how-to manual of Polyface Farm's signature designs--with tips, tricks, and a half century of lessons learned through trial and error. Have you wondered how to build the Polyface broiler shelter, or the dolly to move it, or an Eggmobile, Gobbledygo or Shademobile? For folks getting started, folks adding enterprises, or folks wanting a cheaper bootstrap way to build portable livestock infrastructure, Polyface Designs has all the diagrams and do-it-yourself building specifications. Joel Salatin wrote the text and Polyface former apprentice and engineer extraordinaire Chris Slattery did the drawings. Ultimately practical, the book includes how to build a corral, a home-made head gate and even how to select the right axle for your project. Square footage requirements for the deep bedding hay shed and area advice for pig pastures make this the definitive repository for a lifetime of Polyface experimentation. A massive volume, its 568 pages are in full color and beautiful enough to be a coffee table book even though you'll use it in your shop. Don't let the cover price scare you; one building tip can more than save the price of the book.

This book presents recent developments involving the role of nanoparticles on plant physiology and growth. Nanotechnology applications include improvement of agricultural production using bio-conjugated NPs (encapsulation), transfer of DNA in plants for development of insect pest-resistant varieties, nanoformulations of agrochemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers for crop improvement, and nanosensors/nanobiosensors in crop protection for identification of diseases and residues of agrochemicals. Recent findings on the increased use of nanotechnology in agriculture by densely populated countries such as China and India indicate that this technology may impart a substantial impact on reducing hunger, malnutrition, and child mortality.
