Advances in Research on Vegetable Production Under a Changing Climate Vol. 1
A considerable change in climate at a global level will impact the vegetable cultivation and agriculture as a whole; subsequently affecting the world's food supply. Climate change per se is not necessarily harmful; the problems arise from extreme events that are difficult to predict (erratic rainfall patterns and unpredictable high and low temperatures), and consequently reduce crop productivity. Vegetables are in general more succulent (have 90% water) and are more sensitive to climatic vagaries. Sudden changes in temperature coupled with irregular precipitation at any phase of crop growth can affect the normal growth, flowering, pollination, fruit setting, fruit development and fruit ripening can decrease the yield. The irregular precipitation can also affect the soil salinity and is a major challenge in many vegetable growing areas. To mitigate the harmful impact of climatic change there is a urgent need to develop adequate adaptation strategies for adverse effect of climate change and the preference should be given on development of heat, cold, drought, flood and salinity stress tolerant genotypes along with climate proofing through conventional and non-conventional breeding techniques. Available evidence shows that there is a high probability of increase in the frequency and intensity of climate related natural hazards due to climate change and hence increases the potential threat due to climate change related natural disasters in the world. This book (Volume- I) will be basically useful for the researchers and postgraduate students with current challenges and mitigation strategies for increasing vegetable production under a changing climate.
Site-Specific Nutrient Management
The concept of nitrogen gap (NG), i.e., its recognition and amelioration, forms the core of this book entitled Site-Specific Nutrient Management (SSNM). Determination of the presence of an NG between fields on a farm and/or within a particular field, together with its size, requires a set of highly reliable diagnostic tools. The necessary set of diagnostic tools, based classically on pedological and agrochemical methods, should be currently supported by remote-sensing methods. A combination of these two groups of methods is the only way to recognize the factors responsible for yield gap (YG) appearance and to offer a choice of measures for its effective amelioration. The NG concept is discussed in the two first papers (Grzebisz and Lukowiak, Agronomy 2021, 11, 419; Lukowiak et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1959). Crop productivity depends on a synchronization of plant demand for nitrogen and its supply from soil resources during the growing season. The action of nitrate nitrogen (N-NO3), resulting in direct plant crop response, can be treated by farmers as a crucial growth factor. The expected outcome also depends on the status of soil fertility factors, including pools of available nutrients and the activity of microorganisms. Three papers are devoted to these basic aspects of soil fertility management (Sulewska et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1958; Grzebisz et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1701; Hlisnikovsky et al., Agronomy 2021, 11, 1333). The resistance of a currently cultivated crop to seasonal weather variability depends to a great extent on the soil fertility level. This aspect is thoroughly discussed for three distinct soil types and climates with respect to their impact on yield (Hlisnikovsky et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1160-Czech Republic; Wang et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1237-China; Lukowiak and Grzebisz et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1364-Poland). In the fourth section of this book, the division a particular field into homogenous production zones is discussed as a basis for effective nitrogen management within the field. This topic is presented for different regions and crops (China, Poland, and the USA) (Cammarano et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1767; Panek et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1842; Larson et al., Agronomy 2020, 10, 1858).

Food Safety for Beekeepers - Advice on legal requirements and practical actions
Beekeepers are unusual, as their activity (which is often "just a hobby") is the production of food that may be sold to the public. Many will see the process through from the very beginning - making hives, sourcing bees, setting up apiaries, and managing the bees, right through all stages of harvest, processing, packing, labelling, to retail sale. Training is usually through local beekeeping associations, who often use a curriculum set by the British Beekeepers Association; this focuses on the practical sides of beekeeping, husbandry and the like, and it is intended to lead on to further study with Modules, and even the National Bee Diploma, the pinnacle of the possible qualification. The BBKA's Module 2 assessment includes food production and hygiene: the "bee press" occasionally have articles or a mention. There is little reliable guidance for beekeepers on the food production side, which is quite surprising. Although many beekeepers are hobbyists, with a few hives, and very limited sales, many have a number of hives. Of course, there are also bee farmers with many hives, producing significant quantities of honey and related products in commercial quantities. It's surprisingly easy to progress from a couple of hives to several, to having many! There are often enquiries on social media about honey, processing, or legal requirements. The sometimes less-than-expert responses often perpetuate old practices or information, which were not always correct to start with. For instance, I've seen it stated that in order to label honey with its botanical origin, it needs to contain variously 40% through to 70% of that nectar; but neither of these numbers is mentioned in the UK legislation. Another misrepresentation is that you don't need to register as a food business if premises are used for less than five days in five consecutive weeks: this is based on the Food Premises (Registration) Regulations 1991. However, these were superseded by Retained Regulation (EC) 852/2004, which contained no such exemption; there's full information in the relevant paragraph.

Concepts for Understanding Fruit Trees
Anyone who observes fruit trees may wonder how or why they behave in specific ways. Some trees grow upright while others are more spreading in habit. Some produce many flowers and small immature fruit only to drop most of the fruit later on; others grow more on their sunny side than their shady side. It is common to ascribe such behavior to the tree as a whole and state that trees preferentially "allocate" resources to specific organs. This, however, is the wrong approach to understanding tree functioning and behavior. Trees are not in control of what they do. What trees do and how they function is shaped by the individual organs that make up the tree, not by the tree as a whole. The genetic code only indirectly determines the habit, structure and behavior of a tree by defining the behavioral and functional limits of the component organs, tissues and cells. Unlike animals that have a mechanism for collective control of the whole organism--a central nervous system--trees (and plants in general) are more appropriately considered as collections of semi-autonomous organs. These organs are dependent on one another for resources, such as water, energy and nutrients, but control their own destiny. Malt barley contract farming was firstly introduced by Diageo followed by Heineken beer companies. Along the value chain of malt barley contract farming, agricultural cooperatives and model farmers are known chain actors.
