The Language of Flowers
This collection features five peer-reviewed literature reviews on conservation tillage in agriculture. The first chapter reviews types of tillage and soil disturbance and how different soil management techniques affect the cropping cycle. The chapter also discusses how soil disturbance can be minimised during key farming operations. The second chapter describes the principles of Conservation Agriculture (CA), looking primarily at soil management. It also examines the key concepts of no-tillage agriculture, as well as the environmental and economic benefits these techniques offer. The third chapter discusses the role of conservation tillage in organic farming, reviewing over 20 years of practical, on-farm research. It outlines the main benefits associated with conservation tillage, whilst also considering the challenges that arise with its implementation and how these can be addressed. The fourth chapter explores the emergence of conservation tillage (CT) as an innovation to address stagnant wheat yields in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of South Asia. The chapter explores the benefits of CT for soil health and crop yields, and highlights current obstacles facing region-wide adoption of CT. The final chapter reviews the advantages of zero-till maize cultivation, including reduced soil erosion and nutrient losses. It also summarises best management practices to optimise zero-till maize systems.
The Modified Golden Hive (Einraumbeute)
Horizontal hives with frames are becoming increasingly popular in Europe and North America. One of these is the golden hive or Einraumbeute, developed at Mellifera Association in Germany, based on Dadant-size frames rotated ninety degrees. The resulting deep format allows for a vertically uninterrupted brood nest and a deep honey crown that is good for wintering. This book describes modifications to the golden hive to buffer the colony against heat/cold extremes as does a tree cavity. With the help of many pictures, details are given of how to make the hive, followed by highlights of running it untreated for varroa over six seasons. A few other modified golden hive projects are also mentioned.About the authorAfter retiring from research biochemistry to north-west Wales, David Heaf took up hobby beekeeping in 2003. He runs about 10 colonies in Warr矇 hives and several in other hive types. In 2010, Northern Bee Books published his book The Bee Friendly Beekeeper and again invited him to write two other books, Natural Beekeeping with the Warr矇 Hive - A Manual and Treatment-Free Beekeeping, (IBRA & NBB) which they published in 2013 and 2021 respectively.

Instant Insights: Tropical Agroforestry
This collection features four peer-reviewed literature reviews on tropical agroforestry. The first chapter addresses the challenges associated with incorporating agroforestry into agroecological intensification and sustainable landscapes. The chapter also considers the challenge of developing policies in support of agroforestry, and the challenge of developing agroforestry at scale. The second chapter reviews to what extent agroforests are able to meet the objectives of sustainable forest management, focusing on biodiversity conservation, supply of forest products and carbon capture. The chapter also highlights the potential limits of system intensification in delivering ecosystem goods and services. The third chapter presents an overview of the ecosystem services that can be delivered by tropical agroforestry systems. The chapter presents practical approaches for trade-off analysis between ecosystem services and plant biodiversity for better design (or redesign) and how management of agroforestry systems can be optimised. The final chapter summarises the importance of cocoa-based agroforestry systems to global agricultural landscapes. The chapter reviews the different cocoa system technologies (e.g. cocoa-timber systems) and presents a four-step guide for analysing the shade canopy of shaded cocoa systems to ensure a diverse, resilient agroforestry system is in place.

A New Nobility of Blood and Soil
Fearsome and provocative, the slogan "Blood and Soil" speaks to the interplay between the land and the people on it-the power of a land to shape a people and the power of a people to shape a land. Richard Walther Darr矇, an Obergruppenf羹hrer in the SS, was the leading "Blood and Soil" ideologist of Germany and served his people as Reich Minister of Food and Agriculture. This book, A New Nobility of Blood and Soil, was massively popular in the Third Reich and led to a strengthening of the agrarian and agriculturalist movements. Highly influential on Hitler, the principles in this book are foundational to the National Socialist worldview. This worldview held that Germany's natural elite, its nobility of blood and soil, was the nation's last hope against both the rapacious elite of capitalist wealth and the degenerate elite of ancient privilege. The hardworking and industrious peasant, who has no other country to call home, no riches with which to escape his duties, no international connections with which to deracinate himself, is the truly national man. His country is everything to him, and he is everything to his country, for it is on his back and by his sweat that his country is built. Thus, only from such a class of people can a new nobility arise that can combat the depravations of the modern world, with its polluted rivers, childless marriages, and the asphalt culture of city life. With no English language edition available, this essential text has been unknown to modern dissidents for far too long. Antelope Hill Publishing is proud to present, for the first time in English, A New Nobility of Blood and Soil. Laboriously translated by Augusto Salan and Julius Sylvester, this book is important to the preservation and contextualization of history.

Wildland Fire Behaviour
Wildland fires have an irreplaceable role in sustaining many of our forests, shrublands and grasslands. They can be used as controlled burns or occur as free-burning wildfires, but can also be dangerous and destructive to fauna, human communities and natural resources. Through scientific understanding of their behavior, we can develop the tools to reliably use and manage fires across landscapes in ways that are compatible with the constraints of modern society while benefiting the ecosystems. The science of wildland fire is incomplete, however. Even the simplest fire behaviors - how fast they spread, how long they burn and how large they get - arise from a dynamical system of physical processes interacting in unexplored ways with heterogeneous biological, ecological and meteorological factors across many scales of time and space. The physics of heat transfer, combustion and ignition, for example, operate in all fires at millimeter and millisecond scales but wildfires can become conflagrations that burn for months and exceed millions of hectares. Wildland Fire Behaviour: Dynamics, Principles and Processes examines what is known and unknown about wildfire behaviors. The authors introduce fire as a dynamical system along with traditional steady-state concepts. They then break down the system into its primary physical components, describe how they depend upon environmental factors, and explore system dynamics by constructing and exercising a nonlinear model. The limits of modelling and knowledge are discussed throughout but emphasized by review of large fire behaviors. Advancing knowledge of fire behaviors will require a multidisciplinary approach and rely on quality measurements from experimental research, as covered in the final chapters. Features: Approaches wildland fire behavior as the product of a dynamical system rather than as a steady-state property of fuels, topography and weatherIntroduces and applies the physical principles of heat transfer, combustion and ignition to the wildland fire contextExplores dynamical fire behaviors using a simplified model of wildfire spreadSurveys the state of knowledge of large wildfire behaviorSummarizes methods for studying fire behaviors at laboratory and field-scales
Spices, Scents and Silk
Spices, scents and silks were at the centre of world trade for millennia. Exotic luxuries such as cinnamon, ginger, pepper, saffron, clove, frankincense and myrrh. Through their international trade, humans were pushed to explore and then travel to the far corners of the earth. Almost from their inception, the earliest great civilizations - Egypt, Sumer and Harappa - became addicted to the luxury products of far-off lands and established long-reaching trade networks. Over time, great powers fought mightily for the kingdoms where silk, spices and scents were produced. The New World was accidentally discovered by Columbus in his quest for spices. What made trade in these products so remarkable was that the plants producing them grew in very restricted areas of the world, distant from the wealthy civilizations of northern Africa, Greece and Europe. These luxuries could be carried from mysterious locations on the backs of camels or in the holds of ships for months on end, and arrived at their final destination in nearly perfect condition. Once the western world discovered the intoxicating properties of these products, their procurement became a dominant force in the world economy. Nothing else compared with their possible profit returns. In this book, eminent horticulturist and author James Hancock examines the origins and early domestication and culture of spices, scents and silks and the central role they played in the lives of the ancients. The book also traces the development of the great international trade networks and explores how struggles for trade dominance and demand for such luxuries shaped the world. Recommended for academics, students and general readers with an interest in crop and agricultural development, world trade, economic botany, history of food, and global economics and public policy, Spices, Scents and Silk offers a fascinating and insightful history.
Applied Crop Physiology
This book presents a simple, straightforward discussion of the principles and processes involved in the production of grain yield by agronomic crops, and how these processes underlie and influence management decisions. The focus is on grain crops, principally maize and soybean, although the general principles apply equally well to cereals, grain legumes and oil crops.Management decisions define all cropping systems - what (crop species, variety), where (climate), when (planting date), and how (row spacing and population density) are the fundamental choices. Knowledge of the fundamental processes responsible for plant growth and the accumulation of yield simplifies the decision-making process and leads to improved management decisions, higher grain yields, and cropping systems that are efficient, resilient and sustainable. The contents include: - Basic plant growth processes e.g. photosynthesis, respiration, evapotranspiration- Growth and production of yield- Crop management - seed quality, variety selection, plant date, row spacing- Crop production in the future - climate change, GMOs, precision data and new cropsIntended for researchers in crop science, agronomy and plant science, and crop production practitioners, this book will enable readers to make better, more informed management decisions; decisions that will help maintain a well-fed world in the future.

Nitrogen Fertilization in Soybean Under No-Till Systems on the Straw
In Brazil the cultivation of soybean is almost all done under no-till system, and the soybean is the Brazilian culture with fastest growing in the last three decades and corresponds to 49% of the grain planted area in Brazil. The increasing productivity is associated to technological advances, the management and efficiency of producers. Cultivated especially in the Midwest and South regions, soybean has established itself as one of the leading products of domestic agriculture and trade balance. Soybean was responsible for the formation of a complex structure of production, storage, processing and marketing in all countries where it is growing on a large scale. The great demand in the international market provided rapid expansion of this crop in Brazil, which occurred by the replacement of other cultures by soybean culture, and especially by the conquest of new agricultural frontiers. In relation to nitrogen fertilization efficiency in soybean crop, there are many doubts about the subject. In some situations, as in production systems under no-till with a high amount of straw on the soil, nitrogen fertilization can reduce the problem of nitrogen deficiency and also increase soybean crop yield, however, there is a limit of dose of nitrogen to be used and the soybean grain yield increase and the soybean price must compensate the nitrogen fertilization investment. This book will present results of researches conducted in the Northwest region of S瓊o Paulo State (Brazil), involving nitrogen fertilization in soybean under no-till system on the straw of sugarcane and on the straw of forage sorghum intercropped with Congo grass.
Discovery of Bioactive Ingredients from Natural Products
The book includes original research and review articles covering different aspects of the exploitation of bioactive compounds recovered from vegetables and plants as natural ingredients for nutraceutical purposes and for crop protection. Innovative approaches for the extraction of bioactives from different plant species are detailed together with up-todate methods and results of investigations on the quali-quantitative fingerprint of the obtained extracts. Sustainability of the extraction processes is also considered, with studies focused on the reuse of agri-food industry wastes with a view to a circular economy. Additionally, biotechnological and microbial-based approches are addressed with studies aiming for the recovery of biactives from bacterial and fungi microrganisms and using microrganisms to improve the bioactives' extraction performances. In vivo tests and in vitro bioassays to support biological activity of purified compounds, complex extracts and/or combined extracts deriving from different matrices are reported and sustainable strategies for the use of the bioactives for nutraceutical, therapeutic and crop protection applications are also discussed, with particular attention paid to the design of new sustainable drugs.
