Flipphonia
In this novel an American non-profit company initiates a national movement to heal the youth's addiction to mobile social media, like smart phones. Voice Synthesis Inc. (VSI) based in Alexandria, Virginia, was founded by Matt and Heather Flynn, billionaires from their Turbopod (T-Pod) vehicles sold around the world. The couple does research to determine that the addiction starts at age ten and is a primary culprit in the dramatic reduction of the Work Ethic in America. The book provides alarming statistics as VSI's employees focus on the problem at home, in the schools, in retail businesses, in the government, the military and board rooms. It becomes clear to the reader that the social media devices greatly contribute to dumbing of citizens, ripe for control by a Socialist government. The reader follows VSI as it enlists a well-known company to apply artificial intelligence to voice synthesis systems to create a useful Flip Phone for the youth. "FLIPA" can access communications but not the Internet and streaming video. Nationally-known cyber gurus, who formed a company called Padlockers, create a computer E-Worm which debilitates the production of popular smart phones in China. At the same time the government provides programs attractive for companies to bring back the production of the devices to America. The story ends with a realistic hope for the future as the simple FLIPA wins over legions of youth, one Flip Phone at a time.

The Life and Afterlife of Swedish Biograph
Sweden's early film industry was dominated by Swedish Biograph (Svenska Biografteatern), home to star directors like Victor Sj繹str繹m and Mauritz Stiller. It is nostalgically remembered as the generative site of a nascent national artform, encapsulating a quintessentially Nordic aesthetic-the epicenter of Sweden's cinematic Golden Age. In The Life and Afterlife of Swedish Biograph, veteran film scholar Jan Olsson takes a hard look at this established, romanticized narrative and offers a far more complete, complex, and nuanced story. Nearly all of the studio's original negatives were destroyed in an explosion in 1941, but Olsson's comprehensive archival research shows how the company operated in a commercial, international arena, and how it was influenced not just by Nordic aesthetics or individual genius but also by foreign audiences' expectations, technological demands, Hollywood innovations, and the gritty back-and-forth between economic pressures, government interference, and artistic desires. Olsson's focus is wide, encompassing the studio's production practices, business affairs, and cinematographic conventions, as well as the latter-day archival efforts that both preserved and obscured parts of Swedish Biograph's story, helping construct the company's rosy legacy. The New Information Industry
Rapid developments in technology are reshaping how citizens receive and use information electronically. At the same time, government regulation limits the services that may be offered by the industries that transmit information, and will determine how interactive and other advanced video services are able to develop. In this book, Richard Klingler traces the evolution of regulatory regimes that constrain the broadcasting, telephone, and cable television industries, as well as emerging information services. He also examines new information delivery systems and the integration of electronic carriage with provision of content and information services, including services that resemble printed products.Klingler describes two basic challenges to current regulation of these industries. First, established regulatory regimes often harm competition and the development of services in industries that are increasingly interrelated and rapidly changing. He outlines how recent developments contradict basic assumptions underlying the structure of current regulation and how regulation might better respond to those developments. Second, the Constitution limits regulation of these industries as they increasingly engage in activities protected by the First Amendment. Klingler shows how the First Amendment, as recently elaborated, applies to electronic transmission of information and likely precludes certain forms of regulation, including established regulation of the content of communications. Who Pays for Universal Service?
In virtually every country, the price of residential access to the telephone network is kept low and cross-subsidized by business services, long distance calling, and various other telephone services. This pricing practice is widely defended as necessary to promote ""universal service,"" but Crandall and Waverman show that it has little effect on telephone subscriptions while it has major harmful effects on the value of all telephone service. The higher prices for long distance calls reduce calling, shift the burden of paying for the network to those whose social networks are widely dispersed. Therefore, many poor and rural households--the intended beneficiaries of the pricing strategy--are forced to pay far more for telephone service than they would if prices reflected the cost of service. Despite these burdens, Congress has extended the subsidies to advanced services for schools, libraries, and rural health facilities. Crandall and Waverman show that other regulated utilities are not burdened with similarly inefficient cross-subsidy schemes, yet universality of water, natural gas, and electricity service is achieved. As local telephone service competition develops in the wake of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, the universal-service subsidy system will have to change. Subsidies will have to be paid from taxes on telecom services and paid directly to carriers or subscribers. Crandall and Waverman show that an intrastate tax designed to pay for each state's subsidized subscriptions is far less costly to the economy than an interstate tax. Robert W.
