Conversations with a Deaf Cat
Conversations With a Deaf Cat is the story of how Yolande and Michael taught English on a Canadian Indian reservation and cared for Yolande's mother for five months in the Netherlands until her death from ALS. It also tells about Michael's experiences as a native English speaker in a home with people who tried not to speak English whenever possible.Michael and Yolande are English teachers and writers who travel the globe teaching non-English speaking students how to sound and write like native English speakers. Before teaching, Michael was a corporate manager and actor for thirty-odd years, while Yolande did almost everything (teaching, costuming, animal sheltering, etc.) Together, they have traveled all over the world and plan on continuing to do so until retirement (or partial retirement), whichever comes first. Michael also intends to keep writing, so be on the lookout for more stories about his adventures.
The Travels of Ibn Batuta
In the vast tapestry of world history, few figures stand out as vividly as Ibn Battuta, the 14th-century Moroccan traveler and scholar whose journeys spanned over three decades and covered more than 75,000 miles. "Travels of Ibn Battuta," translated by the distinguished Reverend Samuel Lee, B.D., offers an unparalleled glimpse into the medieval world through the eyes of this intrepid explorer. This book is not just a travelogue; it is a portal to a time when the known world was being mapped by the courage and curiosity of individuals like Battuta. The translator, Reverend Samuel Lee, provides a fascinating preface that sheds light on the long and challenging journey of bringing this translation to life. Lee candidly discusses the delays and obstacles he faced, including the long wait for a complete manuscript that ultimately never arrived and the demands of other pressing projects. His dedication, however, never wavered, and the result is a work of immense historical and cultural significance. The translation is meticulously crafted from three Arabic manuscripts, each an abridged version of the original, housed at the prestigious University of Cambridge. These manuscripts, bequeathed by the renowned traveler and scholar Mr. Burckhardt, are treasured artifacts that provide a unique window into the past. Despite the abridgements, the narratives captured within these pages are rich with detail, offering insights into the geography, botany, and historical events of Ibn Battuta's time.Lee's preface underscores the value of Ibn Battuta's observations, particularly his accounts of regions such as Asia Minor during the rise of the Tartars and the Mughal Empire's expansion in Hindustan. These narratives are not only historically significant but also provide a vivid picture of the cultural and social landscapes of the 14th century. This book is a treasure trove of knowledge, a chronicle of adventures that takes readers on a journey through lands and eras that have shaped the course of history. It is a must-read for anyone with a passion for history, travel, and the enduring spirit of human curiosity and exploration. The detailed and captivating prose of Reverend Samuel Lee, combined with the unparalleled adventures of Ibn Battuta, makes this a compelling addition to any bookshelf.Prepare to embark on a journey through time and space, guided by the words of one of history's greatest travelers, brought to life by a translator whose dedication and scholarship illuminate every page. This is more than just a book; it is an invitation to explore the world anew.
The Man Who Was Afraid
The Man Who Was Afraid is an 1899 novel by Maxim Gorky. His hero an atypical figure in the context of Russian merchant community. "It is supposed to present the broad and true picture of the contemporary life, while featuring the figure of an energetic, healthy man, craving for space to realize his power's potential. IHe feels restricted. Life smothers him. He realizes that there is no place for heroes in it, they apt to being defeated by small things, like Hercules, the conqueror of hydras, crashed by hordes of mosquitoes," he wrote in a February 1898 letter to the publisher S. Dorovatsky
How the Ship Changed My Life
Due to the difficulty to find a job in his city, Goran chooses the type of career that changed his life. He started to work on a cruise ship in the hospitality industry in 2013. He has three contracts in three different cruise ships. He considers this experience the most difficult but also the most valuable that life has taught him. Working on a vessel requires huge sacrifices like being miles away for more than half a year from family and friends, working with different nationalities and cultures, brutally heavy pace of minimal ten working hours every day and often even more without normal sleeping hours but on the other hand a piece of relaxation that makes it very special such as travelling to various attractive world tourist destinations and creating unforgettable friendships and adventures. Because of his soccer dream, he left the cruiser in 2016 together with Elizabeth from Peru (back then his girlfriend, today his wife) and since 2017 they live in Munich, Germany. From the first day spent on the ship, during all the rich experiences and adventures until the last disembarkation, through magical Peru and a special proposal on the beautiful Machu Picchu to the current life in Germany, he continues to explore new places and shares his soccer passion. Ship life inspired him to write this book and motivate people in achieving their biggest goals because he strongly believes that everything is possible if the person really wants it.

From the Gulf to Ararat
This account written by G.E. Hubbard, secretary of the delimitation commission is of his journey in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Kurdistan from Nov. 1913 to Apr 1914. It is an account written by an astute political mind and contains much information, The western frontier between Persia and the Ottoman Empire was long a source of disputed claims by cach. Supposedly settled under the Treaty of Ezerum of 1847, in reality it took a further seventy years to settle the details. This was achieved by the Turco Persian Frontier Commission. Ernest Hubbard was Secretary to the Commission and a key factor in its success. From the Gulf to Ararat is his account of the Commission and of the regions through which they travelled. Often amusing but always informative it reveals the realities of making a boundary in practice and the need to be aware of local factors such as race, tradition, and religion, when dealing with boundary issues.
My India
My India is Jim Corbett's love letter to the country he called home, a place that shaped his life and work as a hunter, naturalist, and conservationist. In this beautiful collection of essays, Corbett offers his personal reflections on the people, culture, history, and landscapes of India, weaving together anecdotes from his travels with observations on the country's varied terrain-from the lush jungles of Kumaon to the bustling streets of Delhi. Corbett's writing reflects his profound respect for India's wildlife and natural beauty, as well as its rich and diverse heritage. Throughout the book, he shares his experiences with the local people, from the villagers who called him to help deal with dangerous animals to the farmers who lived in harmony with the land. His writings are imbued with nostalgia for a disappearing way of life, one that balances human existence with the natural world in a way that is increasingly rare. My India is a celebration of a country that deeply influenced Corbett's work, and his heartfelt portrayal of India's spirit resonates with anyone who has ever fallen in love with the land, its people, and its culture.

Agatha! Agatha Snow Abroad
If you like unusual travel books, then you'll enjoy Susan Snow Lukesh's study of her great aunt Agatha Snow's sketch book developed during her 3-month tour of Europe with three companions in 1912. In Agatha! Agatha Snow Abroad: A Sketch Book from her 1912 EuropeanTour, Lukesh presents and explores the original images and brief comments, pulling threads to explore what the often-cryptic comments mean. Agatha! also explores the people she and her friends met and briefly traveled with, and what happened to the various players in this trip after it ended as the world moved into the first World War and even beyond. Although their steam ship left New York harbor barely two days after the Titanic sank and before the survivors arrived, no recorded comments from the passage to Europe mention the tragedy.Contemporary postcards and one early 19th c print complement Agatha's drawings and show how close her small sketches came to the actual sites she portrayed. The small sketch book, not even four by six inches, presents images-some with incredible detail that is best seen when the original image is enlarged, causing a reader to shake his or her head and wonder how she did it. Her favorite subjects are people and as many folks who travel know part of the fascination and interest in travel is encountering people who are quite different from those we know at home. And certainly, Agatha's images, in fact caricatures, of people capture and convey her clear fascination with the people she encountered. Agatha! supplements Agatha's comments and descriptions with diary entries and letters sent home by other contemporary accounts further enriching what may first appear as a meager offering, if judged only by size. Agatha's sketch book, and the exploration of it, offer a snapshot of life in the early 1900s during the Edwardian era-where and how folks traveled, what travelers discussed, what they did, and what they ate. Lukesh also traveled on a couple occasions to some of the very places that Agatha and companions visited. On one occasion, she found herself traveling in one of the railway cars and on the very line-both now under restoration-that Agatha and companions traveled in England. Also, in England, she traveled to see Warwick where Agatha had seen and drawn two wonderful sketches of men on the streets of that fine historic town.Agatha! not only presents the original sketches and brief comments from over 100 years ago, but includes solutions to puzzles that Agatha left us, such as what is the story of Mrs. Campbell and the Cockroaches in the Cabin, what is A.B.C., and what are horse-tail guards? Agatha!fulfills a reader's need to know what happened to the folks Agatha met and now the readers meet on the trip-both those on the ship passages to and from Europe and those met along the way in Europe. As much as possible, using public records, the lives of some of them after the trip, through World War 1 and the years after, are traced, as are the fates of the ships that carried the travelers. Not every puzzle has been solved, leaving some for readers, but many are, with great thanks to internet resources these days and Lukesh's ability to use public records for genealogical purposes and answers.

Selected Memories
This book contains twenty-two independent chapters relating stories of the author's adventures over more than fifty years of global travel. Two perspectives are found in the book. One is that of the author's personal adventures, with examples such as almost getting stuck in Iran with an expired visa, taking a nap with giraffes and zebras in South Africa, and a story of what can happen when getting a haircut where English is not spoken. He also relates his experiences of being a jury foreman in a murder trial, purchasing a goat in northern Kenya, and having a one-month-old baby teach him an important fact of life during a medical school teaching session. The other perspective is that of the author's interactions with locals in places like Cambodia, India, Bhutan and Syria, where he developed relationships of trust and acceptance with locals he met. In one chapter, he visits a northern India Hindu monkey temple with a devout follower whose unique temple offering would shock most Westerners. In another, he shares a Cambodian bird-watching guide's narrative of avoiding certain death from the Khmer Rouge by hiding in the forest for over a year. Then there's the drama of the Bhutanese peasant farmer who was mauled by a bear in the remote part of the country, and his lengthy and exhausting efforts to obtain assistance. The author interviewed him in the Thimphu Bhutan National Hospital.Color photographs throughout the book provide added value to the reader. Favorites vary, but dramatic candidates include the body-pierced Hindu man at the Batu Caves in Malaysia, or the Aleppo alleyway scene with the boy defying gravity with his cart. The one with the author somehow smiling with a snake draped around his neck is begging for humorous captions.
Toddling Around
What happens when a seasoned travel writer becomes a parent? Magical mayhem? Or just a very expensive series of midday naps?Carrie decided to find out. Well, she didn't decide so much as feel compelled to follow the wanderlust of her past self without thinking it through very much. Most new parents do this: flailing and thrashing as they try to hold onto as much of their past lives as they can. Can dancing and childcare be accomplished by the same person simultaneously? Can a toddler and four bags be magicked around an airport in a state of levitation? And why would Thomas the Tank Engine travel on a motorway? Find out in this short memoir from renowned travel author - and new mum - Carrie Riseley.
Dissertating Geography
This book examines the history of geography (1950-2020) from a bottom-up perspective. Disciplinary histories often emphasise the pronouncements of established academics, yet student-geographers make up the majority of the overall 'geographical community' at any one time. Exploring these efforts of geography students over the past 70 years places the known history of the discipline in a new perspective. A disciplinary history 'from below' recognises and acknowledges student dissertations and advances three core propositions: first, they are produced by an overlooked but nonetheless central grouping in the geographical community; second, the rich archival collection of dissertations specifically consulted here contains many excellent geographical knowledge productions that have remained barely read until now; and third, there is a wish to encourage others to explore similar collections of student knowledge productions held elsewhere. This book will be an important resource for scholars and postgraduate students in Geography, Education, and the History and Theory of Geography.

Overland Echoes
In 1980 I left the comfort of family, friends and a good job in England to embark on a series of overland adventures; adventures that would ultimately take me around the world. I had the privilege of experiencing international travel before the advent of mass tourism. In a time before Lonely Planet and Google drew the maps, every trip was an exploration. It was an amazing time to travel. It was a time when most Indians rode on bicycles, the Turkish coastline of the Mediterranean wasn't packed cheek-by-jowl with apartment blocks, and backpacking was the only way to reach many exotic destinations. I was lucky to experience a time before mass air travel, before the internet, before the sameness that permeates so many places now. These early experiences of travelling shaped the rest of my life. What I took away from this time of adventure were my memories, boxes of slides, and a pile of travel diaries. The diaries languished in the bottom of a box for years, unread. But I rediscovered them, in later life, when I turned to sorting through my accumulated possessions. In my diaries, I found a detailed journal of overland travel in the 1980s; a record of adventures that can no longer be experienced. This book revives those memories of carefree adventure. It describes a journey from London to Australia overland and back through Central America. An account based on the diaries I wrote, the slides I took, and the postcards I collected. It grows out of those faint echoes of overland travel.
Summer of '78
What is this Maybe it is better to express what it is not. This is not a Travel Guide. It Is not an analysis of European lifestyles. It is not even a complete chronicle of major events. It is, however, a snap-shot view through the eyes of a young lady who had never travelled - a daily journal of first impressions, new things and new experiences as they happened.
Somewhere Else
Merri Melde has spent over two cumulative years of her life traveling, answering to an inexplicable need to see the world, to experience different adventures, cultures, people and places. Taken from her travel journals, Somewhere Else features some of her backpack travels inNepal, where she trekked the Annapurna Circuit; India, where exceptional highs and vexing lows included visiting the most incredible Taj Mahal, riding camels in the Rajasthan desert, and enduring a most entertaining 889-mile second class unreserved train ride from Bombay to Cochin; Zimbabwe, where she survived a day of white-water rafting and a 3-day canoe trip down the Zambezi River among hippos and crocodiles; Scotland, where a leisurely tour through the outer Isles slowed time down; and Northern Ireland, where dodging bombs and ignoring tanks in the streets was a way of life and The Troubles consumed her thoughts. Told with frankness and humor - and sometimes a lack of it - Somewhere Else gives readers just a glimpse of other beautiful countries, intriguing people, and uncommon adventures in spellbinding places around the planet.

Corsica Mare e Monte and Sardinia
The Mare e Monte Nord traverses Corsica from sea to sea. It's 76 miles long (123km), involves over 6500 metres of ascent. I took me 9 days. Sardinia lies only 7 miles south of Corsica across the Strait of Bonifacio. Although Corsica is French and Sardinia is Italian, they share many characteristics. Geologically and culturally the islands are very similar. Their history, ethnic base, and cuisine are similar. Both have a deep-rooted connection to the sea and both are mountainous. Both have gorgeous magnificent beaches and unspoilt nature. There are some differences. In area, Sardinia is nearly three times larger than Corsica and has a five times bigger population. Corsica has a more continuous mountain chain that gives rise to the GR20 and the other long-distance walks, including the Mare e Monte. Sardinia has fewer recognised long-distance footpaths. The Mare e Monte is unspoilt and much less frequented than the more famous GR20. Much of the way is forested and one is assailed by the scent of herbs and plants. The walk is very up and down. Six of the ten git矇s are in villages at or near the coast and to get to the next one, you have to climb over ridges and high passes. This means that each day you climb an average of over 700 metres. Most of the way is along ancient transhumance paths for the seasonal movement of livestock and provided the main links between settlements. Sardinia has a rich archaeological history and a vast mountainous interior and it would have been good to have spent longer exploring. But the plan was to have a rest and a pleasant break after the long walk. The Mare e Monte Nord is most worthwhile. It is peaceful, dramatic, varied and interesting. The accommodation is excellent and one gets to enjoy both the crystal clear waters and sandy bays of the coast and the demanding ridges and gorges of the interior.

Lifting the Stone and other Adventures
These journeys record the adventures of a woman who isn't afraid to travel alone. They are a mesmerising and immersive read, pulsating with humour and energy. The writing itself is beautiful and extraordinarily vivid. Every place that she visits is brought to life and imbued with a charming atmosphere. The stories are grounded in fact and characterised by a profound honesty. Her unique personal style shines out in the face of an increasingly grey and uniform world. Lifting the Stone and Other Adventures is about the past re-visited and describes a world - in the context of the author's romantic encounters - that is based on appearances. It is a world of male domination and control in which the feminine, the soul, is stored. This piece is the background to the urban adventures, and the reader is invited to view the show, this world of delightful appearances, as a product of repression. Any writing that is worth its salt aspires to the universal, to what touches us all.
