Airplane Mode
Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medals of Excellence This witty personal and cultural history of travel from the perspective of a Third World-raised woman of color, Airplane Mode, asks: what does it mean to be a joyous traveler when we live in the ruins of colonialism, capitalism and climate change? The conditions of travel have long been dictated by the color of passports and the color of skin. For Shahnaz Habib, travel and travel writing have always been complicated pleasures. Tracing the power dynamics that underlie tourism, this insightful debut parses who gets to travel, and who gets to write about the experience. All the while, Habib threads the historic but ever-evolving dynamics of travel into her personal history as a child on family vacations in India, an adult curious about the world, and an immigrant for whom round trips are an annual fact of life. Woven throughout the book are inviting and playful analyses of obvious and not-so-obvious travel artifacts: passports, carousels, bougainvilleas, guidebooks, trains, the idea of wanderlust itself. Together, they tell a subversive history of travel as a Euro-American mode of consumerism--but as any traveler knows, travel is more than that. As an immigrant whose loved ones live across continents, Habib takes a deeply curious and joyful look at a troubled and beloved activity.

October Harvest
It's a book of poetry, each poem telling a story of its own. Most of the poems deal with love, that's the dominating theme, then there is a lot about music mainly picturing composers, and then there is a geographical department, almost like a journey, characterizing different countries. In between there is a lot of general reflections of a philosophical and metaphysical kind, dealing also with death and other facts of life, generally sticking to realism, some poems being purely documentary.
The Art of Travel
"All male animals, including men, when they are in love, are apt to behave in ways that seem ludicrous to bystanders." -Francis Galton, English Men of Science Galton's collection of travel tips, The Art of Travel (originally published in 1855) was so popular that this 1872 edition was the fifth edition. Galton was by then quite famous as an explorer. His purpose in writing the book was to teach other travelers the skills required for self-sufficiency that he had learned during an historic expedition into the interior of Africa. These pointers include: how to ride horses, handle elephants, and avoid cobras. Also included are sections on how to pull teeth, find water in a desert, and construct a sleeping bag out of fur.
The Geography of Uncertainty

Cape to Cairo
Starting out from Cape Town in South Africa, there is plenty to see as the journey heads north. The scenery changes from green fields and vineyards such as Stellenbosch to the deserts and giant sand dunes of Namibia. It is only further north that the desert changes to savannah. There are numerous safaris to see wild animals in their natural habitat including hippopotamus, the most dangerous animal on the continent and walking with cheetahs. There are close encounters with elephants in the Okavango and views of thousands of zebras before crossing the border in Zimbabwe. There are the magnificent Victoria Falls and a railway journey across the Zimbabwe countryside to Bulawayo with its great industrial centre and railway heritage. On safari through the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, there is the opportunity for visitors to see all of the Big Five Game animals, the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. There are the Spice Islands, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where there is an opportunity to walk with gorillas and there were plenty more countries and experiences to enjoy and this was still only halfway up the continent to Cairo.

Setting out in 1910, "We left Singapore on November 26th, and as we passed through the narrow Riou Straits we saw the remains of the French mail steamer La Seyne, which had been wrecked there with appalling loss of life only a few days earlier. It was believed that scores of persons were devoured by sharks within a few minutes of the accident happening..." Thus begins the exciting story of one of the great scientific expeditions to a land which is even now considered largely unknown and unreached. Trapped by Tourism
Travel was once a way in which the world changed us. Now, it is a way in which we change the world.Twenty-five years ago, two things made mass tourism possible: cheap air travel and the credit card. The world has come a long way since then--and very quickly--from the need for either travel agents or traveler's checks. From the now-vast cruise ship industry to a myriad of niche areas such as do-good tourism, self-improvement tourism, sex tourism, and adventure tourism, travel--as an industry and an activity--reaches into corners and has developed on scales not hitherto imagined. In Trapped by Tourism: Sustainability Questions for a World Fueled by Travelers, Larry Krotz explores the tensions that formed with the rise of mass tourism, focusing on what travelers want vs what travelers do and the sustainability of tourism itself, both as it plays out in economies and as a factor impacting natural and cultural environments. We will never shut down tourism. We are destined to have it and to participate in it. But what truly are its implications for the world we live in? If communities and governments seek economic benefits, they must also look at the trade-offs: commodification of cultures, economic unfairness, environmental stresses, and much more. By delving into examples ranging from the wine industry to Indigenous communities, Krotz looks at how what we do and how we do it affects important corners of the world, and how awareness has developed about steering the impacts in ways that work for everybody. Trapped by Tourism takes readers around the world to locations such as the old cities of Europe, Indigenous communities in North America and Africa, wine growing regions in Canada, the island of Cuba, and Cathedral towns in England; places where tourism as an economic driver come up against environmental or cultural forces that push in exactly the opposite direction, creating tensions within today's mass tourism. The result is a thoughtful and provocative framework that encourages readers and travelers alike to consider an ever-growing component of our culture--the way we travel and the impact we leave behind.
Travelling Light
It'd been a long time since I claimed some solitude in this blessed landscape; since I've done without lifes little props. Adventures on Land and Sea
Fans of Peter Mayle and Janine Marsh will enjoy this exploration of medieval villages, cultures, and recipes of France's Provence. This travelogue is Book 4 in the author's best-selling series, which has won the IPPY gold medal for Best Culinary Travel Series. Join Carole Bumpus, her husband, Winston, and their friends in Book Four of Savoring the Olde Ways, her culinary-travel series. Following in the footsteps of writer Peter Mayle, Bumpus is on a quest to find the real Proven癟e. On three separate excursions--from Nice to N簾mes, Moustiers to Marseilles, and San Tropez to San Remy--and while sailing along the C繫te d'Azur, she invites you to join her in uncovering the mysteries of Proven癟e. Are they hidden within their myths, festivals, or traditions? Is it possible they're veiled in the sheer beauty of the land and sea? Could they be concealed in Roman arenas in Arles, Orange, or Glanum? Or, perhaps, within the ancient methods of traditional cooking or winemaking? Maybe they are hidden in plain sight among the locals who open their hearts, their bistros, and homes to strangers. Yes, you may find it in chefs while cooking in ancient kitchens, in the smile of the shy barmaid who speaks no English, in the giggle of the Pizza Wagon baby, in the agreeable village baker, or in the patient waiter and harbor master--but you will most especially experience it through friends who fling open their doors to share their families' recipes. Traveling alongside Bumpus, that is where you'll discover the real Proven癟e.

Ocean Freedom
Having grown up by Sydney Harbour, Anne's love affair with the sea and, later, ocean sailing was sealed from an early age. After living in three different countries with three different sailing partners, she eventually sailed around the world in the 36' steel yacht 'Kiwi Dream' with her New Zealand partner, Alan Forrest. Taking five years and doing 33,000 sea miles, visiting twenty-nine countries, hitting two whales, surviving a rat infestation, and wearing out two sets of sails, going a less unusual route via Cape Horn (the Everest for sailors) until they were stopped by COVID-19 in the remote Patagonia Chilean channels in 2020, before finally returning to New Zealand. Woven through the book, are some of the author's encounters during forty years of sailing and yacht deliveries. From crossing the Atlantic on a square-rigged ship to sailing the Northwest Passage and fighting hurricane force 4 winds in Antarctica.

Castanhoso, a Portuguese soldier who took part in this campaign, offers a first-hand perspective on the events, challenges and cultural interactions that marked this historic expedition. The book begins by describing the geopolitical situation at the time, with the Ethiopian Empire, also known as Abyssinia, under constant threat from Muslim forces led by Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, nicknamed "Gragn". Window Seat
Author Majorie Neset, a lifelong traveler, reader, and writer, invites you along on a lifetime of journeys, long and short, to "far away places with strange-sounding names"-or just down Highway 71 to picnic in the shade of Paul Bunyan and Babe. Window Seat: The Story of a Traveling Life presents an explorer's tale or perhaps a memoir of journeying. Neset was born near the beginning of World War II and spent the next eighty-five years traversing the world, from northern Minnesota's Koochiching County to Mongolia, Madagascar, Singapore, Syria, and most points between. While the lands are grand, the adventures reflect a more human scale, often originating in books Neset read and always planned by her alone. Who could have imagined that, as her travels drew to a close, the planet would be experiencing similar turmoil to the events leading up to the world war into which she was born? With that in mind, she encourages everyone to get out there and experience this magnificent planet while they still can.

Throughout my adventure I dodged giant snakes, suicidal kangaroos, ghosts, and tornadoes. I prepared for a gunfight in an opal mining town and uncovered the real story behind the song "Waltzing Matilda" and the old swaggie murdered at an outback billabong. Along the way, I discovered the quintessential Australian culture. This book is for anybody who has an interest in coming to Australia, riding an adventure motorcycle through Queensland, or who just loves adventure and wants to plan their own escape. Between the Salt and the Ash
A writer's quest to understand the deep past and uncertain future of his homeland. After inheriting the miner's safety lamp that belonged to his great-grandfather, Jake Morris-Campbell sets out on a pilgrimage across his homeland. Travelling from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral, he asks what new ways might be made through the old north. This region, a hub of early Christian Britain and later strongly defined by industry and class, now faces an uncertain future. But it remains a unique and starkly beautiful part of the country, with a deep history that is intimately entwined with the idea of Englishness. Jake's journey along the 'Camino of the North' sees him explore the shifting nature of individual and regional identity across thirteen-hundred years of social change. At the same time, it challenges him to reconsider his own calling as a writer and how it relates to the lives of the people he meets along the way. Between the salt and the ash asks what stories the North East can tell about itself in the wake of Christianity and coal. Rejecting the damaging trope of 'left behind' communities, Jake uncovers neglected seams of culture and history, while offering a heartfelt celebration of the place he calls hyem.
A Walk in the Park
* Winner of the National Outdoor Book Award in Outdoor Literature * Winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction * Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times, Air Mail, Smithsonian Magazine, and Financial Times "A triumph. Fedarko doesn't describe awe; he induces it." --The New York Times Book Review "Passionate...memorable...life-affirming." --The Wall Street Journal This New York Times bestseller from the author of The Emerald Mile is a rollicking and poignant account of an epic 750-mile odyssey, on foot, through the heart of the Grand Canyon. Two friends, zero preparation, one dream. A few years after quitting his job to pursue an ill-advised dream of becoming a whitewater guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his best friend, National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon--a journey that, McBride promised, would be "a walk in the park." Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed, unaware that the small cluster of experts who had actually completed the crossing billed it as "the toughest hike in the world." The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was deeper, richer, and far more complex than anything the two men had imagined--and came within a hair's breadth of killing them both. They struggled to make their way through the all-but impenetrable reaches of the canyon's truest wilderness, a vertical labyrinth of thousand-foot cliffs and crumbling ledges where water is measured out by the teaspoon and every step is fraught with peril--and where, even today, there is still no trail spanning the length of the country's best-known and most iconic landmark. Along the way, veteran long-distance hikers ushered them into secret pockets of enchantment, invisible to the millions of tourists gathered on the rim, that only a handful of humans have ever seen. Members of the canyon's eleven Native American tribes brought them face-to-face with layers of history that forced them to reconsider myths at the very center of our national parks--and exposed them to the threats of commercial tourism. Even Fedarko's dying father, who had first pointed him toward the chasm more than forty years earlier but had never set foot there himself, opened him to a new way of seeing the landscape. And always, there was the great gorge itself: austere and unforgiving, yet suffused with magic, drenched in wonder, and redeemed by its own transcendent beauty. A singular portrait of a sublime place, A Walk in the Park is a deeply moving plea for the preservation of America's greatest natural treasure.
Accidentally Wes Anderson: Adventures
Adventure awaits in this new visual odyssey from Accidentally Wes Anderson, taking readers on stunning trips to every continent and sharing oddly moving human tales along the way. For lovers of travel, design, and exploration, AWA presents a brand-new collection of real-world places that seem plucked from the films of Wes Anderson, and the stories that bring each location to life. You'll venture to Antarctica through the treacherous Drake Passage, make a stop in lesser-known Jincumbilly, Australia (where platypuses outnumber people), discover the bridge in Wisconsin that went to nowhere, and drop into the most peculiar umbrella shop in London. But adventure means nothing without someone to tell the tale. You'll meet the father of American skydiving, who created the officially-sanctioned center of Earth--a California town with a population of two. You'll visit the "post office at the end of the world"--and meet its mustachioed letter carrier, who runs an anarchist island nation in his free time. And you'll travel to a town in the Arctic Circle where cats are prohibited, humans may not be buried, and doomsday vaults hold all we need to survive an apocalypse--including the secret recipe for the Oreo cookie. Authorized by the legendary filmmaker himself, Accidentally Wes Anderson Adventures reminds us that the world is ours to explore.
