The Path to Rome
This edition is entirely re-typeset, includes Belloc's 77 original illustrations, and a new foreword by Belloc biographer Joseph Pearce. It is the best edition available anywhere!I vowed a vow there to go to Rome on Pilgrimage and see all Europe which the Christian Faith has saved; and I said, "I will walk all the way and take advantage of no wheeled thing...and be present at High Mass in St. Peter's on the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul."This story of adventurous pilgrimage rambles through the fields of France, the mountains of Switzerland, and the plains of Italy. Belloc's own favorite among his books, The Path to Rome recounts a pilgrimage on foot from the author's birthplace in France to the Eternal City. Along the way he must find shelter, food, and directions. Stopping every few pages for a swig of local wine, his thoughts wander as much as his feet, covering topics as wide ranging as: Devices for Ending BooksOn Justice in ArmiesThoughts on French Folk-LoreThe Value of BakersThe Tradition of Mankind and Ordinary LivingHe also ponders the nature of the soul, declares his theory of blessings, and, when caught in loneliness or despair, cheers himself with stories such as that of the Great Barrel, the story of the Old Sailor, the story of the Devil and the Learned Man, and the story of Mr. Hard (to name a few).In a travelogue devoid of chapters, Belloc carries his reader along at a breakneck pace, stopping only to rest and argue with his imaginary reader, the "Lector." In these altercations with the Lector, Belloc finds he must defend himself, criticize himself, and make fun of himself-and most everything else-for the sake of his sanity and the health of the world. Long a classic and Belloc's best-known work, Os Justi is proud to offer the world a newly typeset edition, complete with all of Belloc's original illustrations.

Steve Burgess takes readers around the world as he ponders our right to roam. In this smart and sharply funny exploration of tourism, Steve Burgess poses the questions that all travelers should pause to consider: why do we travel and should we? In his quest for answers, he reviews studies and interviews experts from many facets of the tourism industry, all the while sharing observations from some of his most personally significant travels, from Rome to Kathmandu. So, is satisfying our own wanderlust worth the trouble it causes? Is the tourist guilty of the charges--from voyeurism to desecration--levelled against them by everyone from environmentalists to exhausted locals to superior-feeling fellow tourists who have traded in the tour bus for "authentic experiences"? While posing these ethical questions, Burgess recounts his own travel blunders and epiphanies. Readers will examine ecotourism in Antarctica, cultural voyeurism in Tana Toraja, the tourist versus the traveler in Palermo. Interspersed between chapters like "Guilt Trip" and "Err Bnb" is the story of a month Burgess spent in Japan--his first trip outside North America--and the whirlwind cross-cultural romance that brought him there; taking him on a journey around the country in search of wonder and maybe even love.Whether navigating love in Kanazawa or seeking belonging in Siena, Burgess's passion for travel shines through in these stories. Anyone with itchy feet will enjoy this humorous and contemplative book about one of the greatest joys in life--travel.

Waiting for the Rainbow
Ten Years in North KoreaThe few countries in the world that remain so closed off that practically no one from the outside gets an insight. North Korea is certainly one of the most secluded. Ruled by the same family for generations, the dictatorship virtually prohibits any contact beyond its borders, isolating 26 million inhabitants from the rest of humanity. This is why the photo book "Waiting for the Rainbow" by Xiomara Bender is so valuable, as it engages with the Korean region in a deeply honest way.The author portrays the lives and everyday routines of the people in this country that few have the chance to know. She seeks to draw attention to the many fates and the changes of recent years, which in this strict dictatorship are only possible in subtle micro-steps. Through her photographic journey through time, her readers can witness this transformation that brings hope. People who appear more self-assured as the book progresses, smiles that turn into laughter, clothing that gradually reflects more of fashion than uniformity. All of this is shown to us by the author in emotionally resonant images.Bender has undertaken nine journeys to North Korea in almost ten years, bringing back this unique photo documentation. The award-winning artist aims to break through the world's culture of willful ignorance regarding North Korea with her work, and without reproach, direct attention to the unvarnished daily lives of the people living there and their state-orchestrated routines. In addition to the touching images, the author prompts reflection through many short texts, without appearing didactic. Her language is art, opening up to those who free the way.

Great Bloody Days - The Gringo Trail 1991-92
A lust for travel and adventure drives the Messiah of Budget Travel and his unwitting disciples to extraordinary lengths as they strive to journey a bit further and a bit longer. None more so than the Tightwad Economist, who has just $3000 and ten months to get from Los Angeles to Santiago de Chile. Budget about $10 a day for transport, food, accommodation, visas and booze. This tale chronicles the adventures of Tightwad and his Gringo mates on the Gringo Trail in the early 1990s when post offices and the Gringo grapevine were communications bread and butter for travellers. Much of Central America was just emerging from civil wars and ruthless dictatorships, while South American countries struggled with drugs, and poverty and a reputation for violence and corruption. Tightwad and his mates dispel some of the myths as they irreverently ply the trail and open their eyes to the magic of Latin America.
Undercroft - The Tales Of A Baggage Handler
Tales of a baggage handler is a true account of my time working at an Airport as a "baggage handler ". Names of fellow colleagues have been changed, so have handerling agents. The name of the airport doesn't get mentioned, but those of you that are regular flyers will soon work out what airport this book is based on. The book is fact based account of what I witnessed and what I was a part of during my ten year spell at the airport. From my humble beginnings as a newbie being chaperoned around on an escorted pass, gaining my airside access all areas pass, and my airside drivers licence. Being a bag rat, a bag runner, a team leader, a supervisor, being demoted back to acting supervisor / team leader, being made redundant after a ten year record and then a decision to return after a few months away and the regret it had on me. A ten year spell in any job is quite an achievement these days, I get asked " what's been your best job ?", well I have to say it's my time spent working at the Airport . Maybe it's not the job but the people you work with, there's some truth in that. Over the ten years, I have been privileged to know and work with some wonderful people. Many are not with us anymore, quite a few I still know through Facebook, unfortunately don't get to see many, well you know what's it like time just passes us by . So if you have ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at an Airport, then may I suggest you read my book, it may seem farfetched in places, but trust me it's all true and the characters that you read about are real . I hope you like my book, hope it doesn't put you off flying, of course it won't, just try and enjoy and picture the scenes that I write about .
This Is The Next Century
"A bitter aftertaste and a fantasy of how we all could live" - Robbie Williams. "This Is The Next Century" starts where "Backpacking Centurion" ended. Long term backpacker Jonny Blair had lived his dream of visiting 100 countries by the age of 34. However, it certainly didn't end there as another century was swiftly swallowed with aplomb, to feature in the next book hattrick. Aftershot is the start of that hattrick. From the deserts of Tunisia, this book will take us to Bangladesh and The Faroe Islands. An extra fascination in lesser known countries appears in this volume, with Austenasia, Podjistan, Adammia, Karakalpakstan and Ladonia all ready for this perpetual tourist. This is the most brutal yet with the extreme horrors of Chernobyl, Auschwitz and a "Taliban" Football Stadium covered in their gory, here. This is gory days loyal, as opposed to the more common glory days loyal. The quiz question is - by the end of Aftershot, will Jonny have ended up in magnetic Kyrgyzstan, will he have returned to the gaping skyscrapers of the Kong or will this Ulsterman still be on the move? "Tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon" - Noel Gallagher.

The Journey
Most trips have a destination as the goal, but it's often the journey itself that becomes the significant part of the trip. When Tom Gilligan began his trip in Vancouver in July 1985, reaching his children in Toronto was the goal. In the 44 days that followed, on 4,604 kilometers of roads, he learned a lot about Canada, and about himself.Tom wrote a lot during that trip, and that journal looked both outward and inward, at geography and at his heart. In the pages of The Journey we learn about mechanical breakdowns and his atrocious diet, but Tom also shares the loneliness, the feelings of not fitting in when he is among people in places such as cafes, and the pleasure of getting help from people when he needed it. From the first rough day, we ride along with him as his skills and confidence build, struggling up steep hills and through pouring rain, and gliding gloriously down long sunny grades. This is not the story of a well-planned, well equipped trip. Tom was 44 years old, the used bike was barely adequate for the task, and there was no plan beyond simply getting to Toronto. Despite a crash, a dog attack, and some truly ugly days, Tom was able to say he was content with life after a month on the road. The trip did not end with "the victorious triumph of the cycling warrior *he had hoped for, but it was a personal triumph worth celebrating, worth writing about, and worth reading about.
South Korea
This book, besides recounting the emotions, stories, and impressions gathered by the author, aims to be a helpful guide for those interested in planning a trip to this country. Dedicated to exploring South Korea, a land of extraordinary interest, the book can be described as a travel-guide, as although it has the typical structure of tourist guides, containing many practical indications, addresses, tips, and evaluations of places that the reader will certainly find useful in following what still remains a travel itinerary, in reality, it represents a collection of emotions, visions, and stories, gathered like fragrant flowers along the roads of my travels, where I have always sought above all to learn things, to meet people, to satisfy curiosity, and above all to refute the many prejudices that all of us, myself included, carry with us when we set off on the roads of the world. The fundamental purpose, therefore, of bringing to the attention of those readers who will kindly allow themselves to be captivated by my somewhat overflowing desire to narrate, is also to enchant them with the place, the people who inhabit it, the things that are there, so that they too can, as happens to me, surrender to the fascination of going, forgetting if possible that maleficent date written on the ticket they carefully keep in their pocket, with the time and place where they will have to definitively abandon the path of thought, where they have been able to free their minds for a brief time letting them soar high, only to unfortunately but without options, return home. I hope that reading this travel-guide will help them to dream again, if only for a little while, and feel encouraged to directly experience a country still little known from a tourist point of view, which instead has a lot to tell starting from its millennia-old history, its artistic vestiges, its natural beauties but above all from the encounter with its people.

Europe, a continent steeped in history, art, and vibrant traditions, has long been a magnet for tourists. But in recent decades, there's been a shift in travel motivations. This essay delves into the rising trend of cultural tourism in Europe, exploring its causes, impact, and exciting future directions. From Snapshots to Immersions: Why Cultural Tourism is Booming The rise of cultural tourism can be attributed to several key factors. One is a growing desire for authenticity and deeper connections. Travelers today crave experiences that go beyond ticking off landmarks on a list. They want to immerse themselves in local cultures, understand traditions, and forge meaningful connections with places and people. Cultural tourism offers this in spades, allowing visitors to engage with the essence of a destination.

Wreckless in the City
The title "Wreckless in the City" is a humorous play on the words reckless (as in carelessness) and wreck (as in a traffic wreck). The hope is that with the lessons learned in this book, traffic wrecks due to recklessness could be reduced, if not eliminated, on city streets and beyond. Although the guide is primarily for teenage drivers, it is also applicable to all drivers (experienced adults included). Not only will readers learn about safe-driving tips and guidelines, the real science of physics, as it relates to motion, can also be appreciated. If I can get the reader's initial attention through a humorous opening, I will have a chance of retaining the attention through the other critical steps of getting my point across. The goal is to have "wreckless" driving experiences in the city and everywhere else. Auto accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers, particularly young men. Worldwide records show that every year, almost two million people are killed in road accidents and about 50 million more are seriously injured.
