Selected Memories
This book contains twenty-two independent chapters relating stories of the author's adventures over more than fifty years of global travel. Two perspectives are found in the book. One is that of the author's personal adventures, with examples such as almost getting stuck in Iran with an expired visa, taking a nap with giraffes and zebras in South Africa, and a story of what can happen when getting a haircut where English is not spoken. He also relates his experiences of being a jury foreman in a murder trial, purchasing a goat in northern Kenya, and having a one-month-old baby teach him an important fact of life during a medical school teaching session. The other perspective is that of the author's interactions with locals in places like Cambodia, India, Bhutan and Syria, where he developed relationships of trust and acceptance with locals he met. In one chapter, he visits a northern India Hindu monkey temple with a devout follower whose unique temple offering would shock most Westerners. In another, he shares a Cambodian bird-watching guide's narrative of avoiding certain death from the Khmer Rouge by hiding in the forest for over a year. Then there's the drama of the Bhutanese peasant farmer who was mauled by a bear in the remote part of the country, and his lengthy and exhausting efforts to obtain assistance. The author interviewed him in the Thimphu Bhutan National Hospital.Color photographs throughout the book provide added value to the reader. Favorites vary, but dramatic candidates include the body-pierced Hindu man at the Batu Caves in Malaysia, or the Aleppo alleyway scene with the boy defying gravity with his cart. The one with the author somehow smiling with a snake draped around his neck is begging for humorous captions.
Toddling Around
What happens when a seasoned travel writer becomes a parent? Magical mayhem? Or just a very expensive series of midday naps?Carrie decided to find out. Well, she didn't decide so much as feel compelled to follow the wanderlust of her past self without thinking it through very much. Most new parents do this: flailing and thrashing as they try to hold onto as much of their past lives as they can. Can dancing and childcare be accomplished by the same person simultaneously? Can a toddler and four bags be magicked around an airport in a state of levitation? And why would Thomas the Tank Engine travel on a motorway? Find out in this short memoir from renowned travel author - and new mum - Carrie Riseley.

Summer of '78
What is this Maybe it is better to express what it is not. This is not a Travel Guide. It Is not an analysis of European lifestyles. It is not even a complete chronicle of major events. It is, however, a snap-shot view through the eyes of a young lady who had never travelled - a daily journal of first impressions, new things and new experiences as they happened.
Overland Echoes
In 1980 I left the comfort of family, friends and a good job in England to embark on a series of overland adventures; adventures that would ultimately take me around the world. I had the privilege of experiencing international travel before the advent of mass tourism. In a time before Lonely Planet and Google drew the maps, every trip was an exploration. It was an amazing time to travel. It was a time when most Indians rode on bicycles, the Turkish coastline of the Mediterranean wasn't packed cheek-by-jowl with apartment blocks, and backpacking was the only way to reach many exotic destinations. I was lucky to experience a time before mass air travel, before the internet, before the sameness that permeates so many places now. These early experiences of travelling shaped the rest of my life. What I took away from this time of adventure were my memories, boxes of slides, and a pile of travel diaries. The diaries languished in the bottom of a box for years, unread. But I rediscovered them, in later life, when I turned to sorting through my accumulated possessions. In my diaries, I found a detailed journal of overland travel in the 1980s; a record of adventures that can no longer be experienced. This book revives those memories of carefree adventure. It describes a journey from London to Australia overland and back through Central America. An account based on the diaries I wrote, the slides I took, and the postcards I collected. It grows out of those faint echoes of overland travel.

Taken from her travel journals, Somewhere Else features some of her backpack travels inNepal, where she trekked the Annapurna Circuit; India, where exceptional highs and vexing lows included visiting the most incredible Taj Mahal, riding camels in the Rajasthan desert, and enduring a most entertaining 889-mile second class unreserved train ride from Bombay to Cochin; Zimbabwe, where she survived a day of white-water rafting and a 3-day canoe trip down the Zambezi River among hippos and crocodiles; Scotland, where a leisurely tour through the outer Isles slowed time down; and Northern Ireland, where dodging bombs and ignoring tanks in the streets was a way of life and The Troubles consumed her thoughts. Told with frankness and humor - and sometimes a lack of it - Somewhere Else gives readers just a glimpse of other beautiful countries, intriguing people, and uncommon adventures in spellbinding places around the planet.

Corsica Mare e Monte and Sardinia
The Mare e Monte Nord traverses Corsica from sea to sea. It's 76 miles long (123km), involves over 6500 metres of ascent. I took me 9 days. Sardinia lies only 7 miles south of Corsica across the Strait of Bonifacio. Although Corsica is French and Sardinia is Italian, they share many characteristics. Geologically and culturally the islands are very similar. Their history, ethnic base, and cuisine are similar. Both have a deep-rooted connection to the sea and both are mountainous. Both have gorgeous magnificent beaches and unspoilt nature. There are some differences. In area, Sardinia is nearly three times larger than Corsica and has a five times bigger population. Corsica has a more continuous mountain chain that gives rise to the GR20 and the other long-distance walks, including the Mare e Monte. Sardinia has fewer recognised long-distance footpaths. The Mare e Monte is unspoilt and much less frequented than the more famous GR20. Much of the way is forested and one is assailed by the scent of herbs and plants. The walk is very up and down. Six of the ten git矇s are in villages at or near the coast and to get to the next one, you have to climb over ridges and high passes. This means that each day you climb an average of over 700 metres. Most of the way is along ancient transhumance paths for the seasonal movement of livestock and provided the main links between settlements. Sardinia has a rich archaeological history and a vast mountainous interior and it would have been good to have spent longer exploring. But the plan was to have a rest and a pleasant break after the long walk. The Mare e Monte Nord is most worthwhile. It is peaceful, dramatic, varied and interesting. The accommodation is excellent and one gets to enjoy both the crystal clear waters and sandy bays of the coast and the demanding ridges and gorges of the interior.

Lifting the Stone and other Adventures
These journeys record the adventures of a woman who isn't afraid to travel alone. They are a mesmerising and immersive read, pulsating with humour and energy. The writing itself is beautiful and extraordinarily vivid. Every place that she visits is brought to life and imbued with a charming atmosphere. The stories are grounded in fact and characterised by a profound honesty. Her unique personal style shines out in the face of an increasingly grey and uniform world. Lifting the Stone and Other Adventures is about the past re-visited and describes a world - in the context of the author's romantic encounters - that is based on appearances. It is a world of male domination and control in which the feminine, the soul, is stored. This piece is the background to the urban adventures, and the reader is invited to view the show, this world of delightful appearances, as a product of repression. Any writing that is worth its salt aspires to the universal, to what touches us all.

Backpacking by Train
As well as the author's story of his travels, this book has another function - a comprehensive TRAVEL GUIDE for the present-day backpacker and tourist. It contains various headings, icons, maps and indexes that provide information about travel and accommodations in towns, cities and localities of interest. There have been many changes since the author visited these countries, but the main historical sights of churches. museums, famous buildings and landscape are unchanged except, sadly, for the receding glaciers. This book is about young Australians who ventured abroad in the early 1950s. We travelled by steamship to and from the UK. We were British citizens travelling on British passports and once we stepped ashore in the UK we were accorded all of the benefits the English people enjoyed. In particular the free UK National Health Scheme. There were no work restrictions, and the author easily found work in his trade of fining and turning and had no trouble entering a busy and exciting English social life. While abroad, the author completed five backpacking tours. Three were tours of around two months duration in Europe, Scotland and Scandinavia and two were short tours in England. All were very successful with accommodation provided mostly by the worldwide Youth Hostels Association. The main modes of travel between destinations were by train and hitchhiking, but many other means of transport had to be used ranging from motorcycle, coach and aeroplane. The author skied for three wonderful weeks in Switzerland in the prime ski resorts of Zermatt and Grindelwald.

A Journey to Mecca and London
Descended from Mughal nobility, Akhtar al-Nisa Begum Nawab Sarbuland Jung grew up in Hyderabad in southern India, where she lived a quiet, private, and privileged life at the heart of the state's royal court. In 1896, at the age of 20, she married Nawab Muhammad Hamidullah Khan Sarbuland Jung, a prominent lawyer and the scion of a leading Muslim reformist movement. In 1909, the wealthy couple embarked on a four-month journey through the Middle East and Europe, performing the hajj in Mecca and sitting for tea with the future king and queen of England. A Journey to Mecca and London provides the first full English translation of Begum Sarbuland's Urdu travel diary from this journey, of which only three original copies remain. Originally intended for circulation among friends and family and later published, her informal entries not only reveal the everyday practices of an Indian woman of her time, but also detail her impressions and reactions as she explored the world alongside her husband. As Begum Sarbuland encountered other women and Muslims during her travels, those encounters shaped her reassessment of her own identity as a Muslim woman. Her observations hold continued significance for readers interested in critical questions about gender, Islam, and identity. Daniel Majchrowicz has thoroughly annotated his translation and paired it with rich appendices, including a biographical sketch of Begum Sarbuland and excerpts from Hamidullah Khan's own accounts of their journey.Engagingly written and enriched with years of original research, archival work, and family interviews, A Journey to Mecca and London restores the nearly forgotten narrative of one of India's first Muslim women travel writers to its rightful place in Indian and Islamic history.

From the history of their construction, and sometimes destruction, to births, deaths, romance, and shipwrecks, heroes, storms, and the daily lives of those connected to them, these pillars of light in the darkness and guiding sound in the fog are witnesses to the state of Maine and our country's historical maritime evolution.A strong connection exists between people and lighthouses, which are symbols of hope, faithful watchfulness, steadfast endurance through raging storms, and unwavering duty to the safety of others. Some were lonely outposts in the middle of the ocean where winter gales could blow 70mph, raising the seas so high they would crash over the top of the lighthouse, with keepers and their families knowing that with every break of the waves, it could be the last of the station and their lives. Others on the mainland became lively attractions and part of the community, with locals frequenting the station, often becoming friends with the keeper and their family, and curious summer visitors flocking to the station for lighthouse tours.Between 1791 and 1910, the government established 66 lighthouses along the Maine coast as maritime commerce increased. Discover the history of 20 of these lighthouses and the stories about the tireless and brave men, women, and their families who sacrificed the comforts of home and their safety to keep the lights burning and help mariners navigate these treacherous and often deadly waters. Read about their adventures, dangers they faced, lives they saved, friendships they forged, the animals who lived with them, comical moments, and the love many of them deeply felt for the unique and now vanished way of life living in a lighthouse. This full-color, 90-page book features the following information about each lighthouse: Alternative Names, Location, Tower Height, Focal Plane Height, Year Built, First Lit, Fog Signal, Past Optics, Present Optic, Range, Characteristics, Year Automated, Year Deactivated, Status, Lighthouse Keepers and Dates Served, History of the Lighthouse, Stories Connected to the Lighthouse

The Arkansas Barbecue Traveler
Pulled pork in the Delta. Sliced brisket in the Ozarks. Juicy ribs. Savory chicken thighs. Arkansas is far more than a crossroads between barbecue giants. It's a land with multiple barbecue traditions that originated right here in The Natural State. Kat Robinson set out on a journey to determine Arkansas's barbecue style and history. She discovered meat smoking traditions that vary with the landscape - from 16th century smoking practices to Reconstruction era culinary shifts, from post-refrigeration practices to how food channels changed how we consume these meats. Along the way, she found far more barbecue restaurants, food trucks, catering operations, and family eateries that specialize in smoked meats than any expert ever expected. With well over 350 different spots across Arkansas offering house-smoked meats, not including the regional and national chains that also offer barbecue dishes, The Natural State could legitimately be called The Barbecue State. In this guide, the first in Robinson's barbecue series, enjoy pork steaks along Crowley's Ridge, smoked and fried bologna in West Memphis, wood smoked hanger steak in Gravette, smoked catfish in Sherwood, smoked prime rib in Horatio, vegan barbecue creations in Fayetteville, pork belly candy in Searcy, and so many more. Read this book twice - once to see where to go and what to get, and again when you pull it out of your glove compartment when you're on the road - and savor these tantalizing flavors of Arkansas!
Where the Folk
A road trip through Wales and its rich history of folklore. Russ Williams was raised on Welsh stories, like the one about a mountain that would send you mad or turn you into a gifted poet if you camped out on it, or the one about the lost civilization drowned by the sea, and the one about the bottomless lake leading down to the Welsh Otherworld. Stories of witches and giants and heroic kings, dragons and mad doctors, ghostly women, giant beaver monsters, vampire furniture, and pirate-fighting monks. As entertaining as it is informative, Where the Folk follows Russ Williams as he travels in Griff, his creaky red Fiesta, in search of places associated with Wales's legends, folklore, and urban myths. Bali Guidebook 2016
The perfect thing to do is to drive tourists around the whole island. Safe and sound. Then I can tell in the car about all the attractive places that make Bali famous. Ofcourse we can find all the destinations and cultures where tourists go on the whole island. But in my Guidebook you can also find destinations where generally no tourists come. We can make a planning for a whole day, by making combinations of the locations you can find in the Guidebook. I can drive you at reasonable rates. And I am also prepared to bring you back to the airport in Denpasar, if you wish after a nice lunch on the golden beach of the Jimbaran Bay, Kedonganan Beach. Were you can eat and swim before you go back with the plane to your country. Completely satisfied with all the treasures we have found on Bali.
Adventures of A Third World Shopkeeper
Several years in the life of an English expatriate, married into the community and living life as a merchant in Tampico's central market. Wry observations, social commentary, political ranting and blunt honesty make this a refreshingly different view of Mexico, away from the crystal seas of Cancun and the bucolic ease of Gringo retiree communes.
16 Sundays in France - Cycling from Calais to Montpellier
This is the story of two old fools, les 'deux fous' (and one fous' long suffering wife) on bikes who followed in the pedal steps of Jon Porteous and Rob Gullen, pioneers and writers of 'Wine-ding down through France' from Calais to Montpellier. Fous n繳mero un is Grant; more than ably assisted by his wife Kirsten, and fous n繳mero deux is me, Ben, Grant's brother. Neither of us have a great deal of experience in long distance cycling but the gap in experience is made up for in bulldog spirit. We are closer to 50 years of age than would ideally be the case for this sort of endeavour. It would also be fair to say that Bradley Wiggins would not have to fear losing his place on team Sky to either of these two 'athletes'.
Save for Fireflies
In 2008, after years living abroad, the author returned to his native United States with his wife and two young daughters to drive a full loop around the country. His travel memoir of the experience traces the rediscovery of home as a tourist with no fixed address and no planned destination. Covering 12,000 miles through 32 states, the book offers an accelerated take on the life of a new family as well as the story of a country that may have undergone a greater shift than the traveler who has returned to pay witness to its resilience and splendor.
