Around the World in 80 Years
Pat Peterson has always been an adventurer. This memoir is more than a simple retelling of adventures around the world, nor is it a travel guide. Rather, in her own words, Pat wanted to "...share the remarkable diversity of planet Earth and the people I have met around the world whose stories, along with my own, are worth knowing". From falling off of Long's Peak after a blizzard, camping in the USSR, dancing on the Red Rock's stage, teaching in Haiti, surviving scuba in Fiji, climbing Fuji, discovering Korea, walking though Machu Picchu and Patagonia, hitchhiking 25,000 kilometers in France, boating in Provence and British Columbia, experiencing a rescue in the Grand Canyon, fishing in the Yukon, meeting Martin Luther King, Jr., digging dinosaurs, recounting the story of the Bishop of Okinawa, summiting Kilimanjaro, and more. This chronology of her life and adventures over the years reads more like a movie combination of Ann Bancroft, Amelia Earhart, and a female Indiana Jones than a memoir.
Three Ancient Geographical Treatises in Translation
This volume is a translation and commentary on the works of three geographers from Greco-Roman antiquity: Hanno of Carthage, from around 500 BC; the author of the Periodos Dedicated to King Nikomedes, from the last half of the second century BC; and Avienus, from the fourth century AD.The modern translations of texts in this book represent 1,000 years of Greco-Roman geographical scholarship, and thus provide an overview of the discipline from its beginnings to late antiquity. Readers will learn about the development of Greek geography, and the earliest adventures outside the Mediterranean into the Atlantic, as far south as the tropics and north toward the Arctic. These explorations make for fascinating stories about early human endeavors into an unknown world.Three Ancient Geographical Treatises in Translation offers specialists new information about Greek exploration and a modern translation of significant ancient texts, while non-specialist scholars and undergraduate students with an interest in Greco-Roman literature and ancient geography will also find the volume useful and accessible.

The Passenger: Naples
Fully-illustrated, The Passenger collects the best new writing, photography, art and reportage from around the world. IN THIS VOLUME: Paolo Macry on Naples' "monarch mayors"・Francesco Abazia on the influence of the US Army's presence on Neapolitan popular music・Cristina Napolitano on the Neapolitan diaspora, and what it means to come back・Gianni Montieri on the city's passion for football・Alessandra Coppola on the cult of the young victims of the Camorra, or the police, and much more... In recent years, Naples has been the subject of countless books, films and TV series, making it even more difficult to imagine a Neapolitan normality, if it exists at all. As Naples becomes the most filmed city in Italy, where to look for the ordinary, the average? Maybe we need to "go up" to Vomero, a neighborhood considered almost alien to the city, middle class, homogeneous, peaceful? A reality in sharp contrast with the over-the-top life of the historic centre, crossed as it is by a thousand stratifications - architectural, historical and social. And yet even there we find an alternative reading: the city as a model of coexistence between ancient and modern. While some areas have been waiting for decades for much promised redevelopment, others have benefited from cutting-edge projects with far-reaching positive impact, representing a Naples that attracts talent, exports models, and colonizes instead of being colonized.

Killing the Buddha on the Appalachian Trail
The allure of the Appalachian Trail has drawn hikers from all around the world to walk its 2,193 miles from Georgia to Maine. In Killing the Buddha on the Appalachian Trail John Turner hikes those rugged miles with us on a journey that begins in the forested southern mountains but also winds through the history of the trail, its geology, its unique hiker culture and the hazards, physical demands, and glories of some of the most beloved and beautiful landscapes on America's eastern seaboard. The journey also takes us to some unexpected places - to Africa in the aftermath of a terrible war, into philosophical exploration about the ethics of hiking, and the author's own inner turmoil as he struggles with past failures. We are introduced to characters as varied, brave and determined as any cast of a Broadway musical, each of them contending with the challenge of climbing steep mountains day after day through rain, mud, cold, and heat. Throughout this epic trek, we walk alongside Turner to experience the daily hardships, the milestones reached, the hike-ending accidents and the little victories along the way to the great mountain at the northern terminus - Katahdin in Maine. Turner guides us to Katahdin through a background of Buddhist teaching that gives meaning to the fellowship, solitude, suffering and ultimate triumph of the men and women who seek to hike the entire Appalachian Trail.

Memory Field
In Memory Field, Benick recalls objects of consciousness as altered by the materials of space and time and examines the social and ontological imperatives of what it means to be a body at any given moment. A "travelogue of forgetting" in the Proustian sense, Benick's text embraces the impossibility of accurate remembering and concedes to the liminal overlap of fact and fiction. In distilled fractions of experience, Memory Field holds the place where life once was - in ruin, in metonym, in loss.
A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf
'Many a beautiful plant cultivated to deformity, and arranged in strict geometrical beds, the whole pretty affair a laborious failure side by side with divine beauty.'A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf is the second book in John Muir's Wilderness-Discovery series. It is within this work that we are really given strong clues toward Muir's future trailblazing movement for environmental conservation, in such comments as 'The universe would be incomplete without man; but it would also be incomplete without the smallest transmicroscopic creature that dwells beyond our conceitful eyes and knowledge.'Muir's walk from Indiana to Florida was conceived in order to explore and study further the flora and fauna across states. He undertakes this alone, a dangerous choice perhaps so soon after the civil war, as many characters along the way forewarn. Indeed, Muir is threatened by a robber, and we see a new side to the quiet, lowly gentleman we know as he springs into self-defence mode with lightning initiative and remarkable courage. This is not the only facet of Muir's personality that is uncovered throughout this journey. He makes reference to feeling 'dreadfully lonesome and poor', which is intriguing as his circumstances are self-sought: 'Stayed with lots of different people but preferred sleeping outside alone where possible'. He spends a substantial period of time struck down with malaria, which does not come as a surprise; he was covering many miles on an unsustainably meagre diet with thirst often quenched with swamp water or not at all.Join Muir in Kentucky forests, Cumberland mountains, Florida swamps and all the elegantly described trees, plants, creatures and rocks in-between. A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf teaches us as much about Muir himself as it does the ecosystems in the wilderness across those 1,000 miles.
Our National Parks
'Any fool can destroy trees. They cannot run away ... God has cared for these trees ... but he cannot save them from fools - only Uncle Sam can do that.'First published in 1901, Our National Parks is possibly the bestselling book of Muir's wilderness-discovery titles and was certainly the most influential published in his lifetime, with a strong focus on the preservation of forest reserves. With a strong political tone and shrewd, subtle manoeuvring, Muir uses Our National Parks to persuade his readership of the necessity of nature and national parks for human recreation and more importantly for health and wellbeing, as well as the - in his mind - obvious need for preservation of wild ecosystems.Cannily he counterbalances this with the acknowledgement of the need for timber and irrigation systems, in order that his message is taken seriously; Muir's passion is portrayed so vividly and flamboyantly that without his learned political and scientific reinforcement, he could be misconstrued as purely a radical and eccentric nonconformist. However, the two combined result in an engaging and convincing argument that these landscapes are our 'natural home', and 'fountains of life'.As Muir expert Terry Gifford observes in the foreword, 'Muir's tone can shift in this book from seductive persuasion, to charming details of creatures, flora and landscapes, to scientific information, to trail guide, to religious uplift, to a final political speech of startling ferocity.'John Muir's strategic yet genuine and beautiful conservationist essays were a first at the time of publication, and are still highly applicable to our attitudes and lifestyles today in the twenty-first century.
Apennine Crossings
'The Apennines are Italy' exclaimed The Examiner two centuries ago, yet this unique region and its striking literary and cultural connections are underappreciated in the English-speaking world. Apennine Crossings: Travellers on the Edge of Tuscany links a twenty-first century journey in the mountains of Northern Italy to past writers, routes, and travellers. It follows the modern long-distance walking trail of the 'Great Apennine Excursion', whilst moving back and forth in time: from the Middle Ages to World War Two and from the journeys of pilgrims, merchants, and tourists to those of soldiers, partisans, and poets. Stories of past travellers in the region continually intersect with a contemporary account of a walk across the ridge of the Northern Apennines. Alongside Nick Havely's present-day narrator and traveller, the cast of characters includes major writers and poets, such as Dante, Montaigne, Goethe, Shelley, and Stendhal, together with a multitude of less well-known figures whose journeys, experiences, and responses cast new light on a landscape that is close to yet remote from the sites typically visited by modern travellers to Italy. Havely draws these earlier travellers' stories from a wide range of published and unpublished sources such as letters, journals, memoirs, poems, and interviews. Together, they illustrate several significant themes: the histories of mountain passes, remote lakes, and ancient sanctuaries; perceptions of the mountains; the social and religious culture of the Northern Apennines; the preoccupations of literary tourism; the impact of campaigns and conflict during World War Two; and the effects of depopulation and deforestation. The Apennine region features in its full literary, historical, and cultural richness. Included are twenty-six illustrations, with maps for the whole route and for the sections covered by each of the book's seven chapters.

A Suitcase Full of Wildflowers
There were possibly twenty reasons why I hung the sign on my study door reading, 'Gone to Scotland... back in a month.' Reason number one: I was compelled to languish on a stone bench in the rocky high grounds of Edinburgh Castle, eyes closed, savoring the sweet sound of bagpipes echoing through the centuries-old stillness. The only thrill that could possibly surpass the bagpipes would be the sensory awakening at the Edinburgh Tattoo. Beyond that, my list included a longing to revisit the lochs in hopes of glimpsing the elusive Nessie, a craving for the earthy taste of haggis, a penchant for a lively Scottish reel and jig, and a need to purchase genuine Scottish shortbread. I also yearned for an authentic Scottish coat, gloves, and matching tam-o-shanter, the sight of a man in a kilt (preferably bending over to tie his shoelaces), and the desire to potter around a certain famous viaduct crossing.

This book is about adventure motorcycle riding, middle age, and chicken racing, but most of all it's about adventure and what it means to be an adventurer. On this journey, I learn to ride an adventure motorcycle in some of Queensland's most challenging terrain. I developed a sense of self reliance and found solitude wild camping in remote areas. This book is the beginning of my quest to ride around Australia. Queensland has some of the best adventure riding trails, tracks and roads in the world, from deep bull dust highways and long sandy beach rides to spectacular waterfalls and trails through tropical rainforests. Every town has a story, from bloody conflicts to the formation of political parties, throughout this journey, I take the reader through the heart of Queensland and the soul of Australia. But this adventure is not just about traversing long, solitary highways and dusty dirt tracks. Along the way, I found myself dodging giant snakes, suicidal kangaroos, and even ghosts and tornadoes. I found myself preparing for a gunfight in an opal mining town and uncovering the true story behind the iconic Australian song "Waltzing Matilda" and the tragic fate of the old swaggie murdered at an outback billabong. These unexpected encounters added a layer of intrigue to my journey, allowing me to delve deeper into the quintessential Australian culture. This book is for anyone interested in coming to Australia, riding an adventure motorcycle through Queensland, or who loves adventure and wants to plan their own escape. It is full of historical information about Queensland, motorcycle riding, and amazing people. The story takes the reader from Townsville in the north of Queensland to the heart of the outback and down to the Gold Coast before returning to Townsville via the Queensland coastal road.
Skye Line
Discover Skye as you've never seen it before as the author traverses the island on foot experiencing a wild landscape of remote lochs and mountains where few people tread. An 82-mile journey from Armadale in the south to the cliff-top bothie at Rubha Hunish in the north. He encounters rain and rainbows, otters and eagles, sun and sea, a windswept night in the mountains, the kindness of strangers, and the Northern Lights. On a visit to Skye over twenty-five years ago, the author purchased a photobook called 'A Long Walk on The Isle of Skye'. Since then the book - and walk contained within - have been calling to him from his bookshelf. Finally, in his late forties, he purchased a light-weight tent and a train ticket to Mallaig to embark on Skye Line - 'The Original Skye Trail'. This book is written for two groups of people. Firstly, if you have never backpacked a long-distance trail, this is for you. From the comfort of your favourite chair or sitooterie, you will vicariously traverse a landscape of lochs and mountains and experience how the ever-changing vistas seep into your soul. It might even inspire you to give it a try. Secondly, this book is for seasoned hikers who may wish to traverse the Isle of Skye on this route from south to north, first proposed by photographer David Paterson in 1999: Armadale Ferry to Rubha Hunish. My descriptions will give you an insight into what this journey entails and how it differs from the conventional 'Skye Trail'. For you, there is also a detailed review of my lightweight kit at the end, along with tips on the route and a link to a gxp file of the path I took. There is something here for everybody. So, Trobhad! (come with me)

The Path to Rome
This edition is entirely re-typeset, includes Belloc's 77 original illustrations, and a new foreword by Belloc biographer Joseph Pearce. It is the best edition available anywhere!I vowed a vow there to go to Rome on Pilgrimage and see all Europe which the Christian Faith has saved; and I said, "I will walk all the way and take advantage of no wheeled thing...and be present at High Mass in St. Peter's on the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul."This story of adventurous pilgrimage rambles through the fields of France, the mountains of Switzerland, and the plains of Italy. Belloc's own favorite among his books, The Path to Rome recounts a pilgrimage on foot from the author's birthplace in France to the Eternal City. Along the way he must find shelter, food, and directions. Stopping every few pages for a swig of local wine, his thoughts wander as much as his feet, covering topics as wide ranging as: Devices for Ending BooksOn Justice in ArmiesThoughts on French Folk-LoreThe Value of BakersThe Tradition of Mankind and Ordinary LivingHe also ponders the nature of the soul, declares his theory of blessings, and, when caught in loneliness or despair, cheers himself with stories such as that of the Great Barrel, the story of the Old Sailor, the story of the Devil and the Learned Man, and the story of Mr. Hard (to name a few).In a travelogue devoid of chapters, Belloc carries his reader along at a breakneck pace, stopping only to rest and argue with his imaginary reader, the "Lector." In these altercations with the Lector, Belloc finds he must defend himself, criticize himself, and make fun of himself-and most everything else-for the sake of his sanity and the health of the world. Long a classic and Belloc's best-known work, Os Justi is proud to offer the world a newly typeset edition, complete with all of Belloc's original illustrations.
