A Philosophical Approach to Mental Health Based on Hans-Georg Gadamer’s Hermeneutics
There is a need for innovative and holistic interventions to address mental illness. Conventional approaches tend to overlook individualized experiences and experiential dimensions and these oversights lead to limited understanding and insufficient treatments, thereby compromising patient outcomes. In this study, based on his doctoral research, Edmond Charley reviews a novel approach to mental health based on philosophy, specifically Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutics. This prioritizes and values professional empathy, interpretation, and interactions between caregivers and patients in understanding and treating mental illness. The analysis offers valuable insights that will benefit mental health professionals and practitioners, including social workers, nurses, patient advocates, and more.
The Doctors We Need
In The Doctors We Need, Dr. Anthony Sanfilippo, a respected cardiologist and former Associate Dean of Medical Education at Queen's University, confronts a startling reality: in a nation proud of its pledge to universal healthcare, over 6 million Canadians lack a family doctor. This crisis persists despite massive investments in medical education and institutions. We need to think differently.Drawing on over 40 years of experience in the classroom and at the bedside, Dr. Sanfilippo exposes--with elegance, wit, and empathy--how our legacy processes for recruiting, educating, and promoting hyper-specialization in medicine have failed to adapt to the basic healthcare needs any Canadian should expect. Through compelling real-life accounts, he illustrates: The impact of outdated selection and training methods on doctor shortagesHow our complex, siloed medical education system lacks crucial oversightWhy current approaches fail to produce doctors with the diverse skills needed todayThis groundbreaking book doesn't just diagnose the problem--it prescribes solutions that alter incentives for decision-makers and embrace a new path for aspiring family physicians. Dr. Sanfilippo proposes innovative reforms in three critical areas: Doctor selectionMedical education and trainingHealthcare workplace environmentsThe Doctors We Need is a call to action, challenging Canadians, medical schools, and our political leaders to embrace urgent, disruptive change in the face of clear and present needs. It offers a practical roadmap for ensuring every Canadian has access to quality primary care. Essential reading for anyone concerned about the future of healthcare in Canada, this book provides the blueprint for transforming our medical system to truly serve all Canadians.

The Regenerative Heart
What if all our teachings so far about diseases affecting the heart have been but half-cooked, omitting to discard the innate power of the body to radically heal itself? What if your heart is not a mechanical pump, doomed to inevitable decline, but an adaptive intelligent organ with a great capacity for renewal and regeneration? The Regenerative Heart breaks the conventional model of cardiovascular health to reveal a deeper, more integrated understanding of the heart, not just as an isolated organ but rather as an engaged and dynamic system responding to changes in metabolism, stress, trauma, and even psychological health. The book spreads open the wide range of fasting effects, metabolic adaptation, and the connection of the mind-heart with scientific logical reasoning layered upon the guiding trajectories of cardiovascular health. Through groundbreaking research, The Regenerative Heart investigates the intricate biological workings of heart disease, tearing down its real care and exposing the sinister players in it, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and nervous system imperfection. That's not all: It equally gives us in return an authoritative `New World' for defeating chronic heart diseases with the science of autophagy, mitochondrial biogenesis, and nervous system optimization. It reveals how psychological stress reconditions the heart, how trauma marks its presence at the cellular level, and how the body's own healing processes can be reinstated once again to revive. This is not just another philosophical textbook about caring for the heart; it's a manual for revitalization at the cellular level. It's a manual for fighting disease in the heart, for optimization of longevity, and for maintaining optimal physical and mental function. It is your opening into retrieving the regenerative power within, the one that allows you to start a healing process from the genesis, lured away from existence into real-thriving vitality. Your heart is not broken. It is only waiting for you to trickle out its capabilities. The only question is this: Will you answer the call?

Hour of the Heart
A deeply moving and revealing chronicle of the challenges and breakthroughs that come from a wholly new practice of one-hour, one-time-only sessions, from one of the most prominent psychotherapists of our timeFacing memory loss at age ninety-three as well as the fallout from a global pandemic that moved much of daily life online, legendary psychotherapist and bestselling author Irvin D. Yalom was forced to vastly reconsider the shape of his sessions with patients. Rather than throw in the towel in the face of change, Dr. Yalom considered head-on the limitations imposed by these new realities and revolutionized his practice. Turning his focus to what might be achieved in a one-hour, one-time-only meeting between patient and practitioner, Dr. Yalom employed an even more concerted use of his "here and now" approach. In Hour of the Heart, Yalom recounts some of these intense, life-changing sessions, exploring an array of human predicaments and his own late-career development as a therapist. In recounting these consultations, he shows how a therapist's willingness to be open helps patients let down their own guards, leading to a deeper and more immediate connection--one necessary to achieving profound realizations in just sixty minutes. This vulnerability led Yalom to disclose details about his personal life that he might previously have kept hidden from patients, including his traumatic childhood in Washington, DC, the evolution of his thinking about philosophy and psychotherapy, and the recent death of his wife. Throughout, he pushes the boundaries of self-revelation as a therapeutic tool.Life is precious and our time together short. Written in collaboration with his son, Hour of the Heart shows us how to relate to each other better in the moment, with more honesty and vulnerability. That hour of connection, occurring during a time of isolation and grief for so many, helped to sustain both patient and therapist, and enriched Yalom's vision of what psychotherapy can do.

Dysphagia and Nutrition
The book offers a comprehensive overview of deglutition disorders and of dysphagia treatment, presenting a review of the main instruments for evaluating and treating dysphagia. Swallowing difficulties are a growing concern in the general population, particularly in older patients. Deglutology, an emerging discipline that studies the physiopathological, diagnostic, and rehabilitative aspects of swallowing, is rapidly expanding in response to the increasing demand for clinical and rehabilitative interventions in this field. This book provides an updated presentation of the available diagnostic tools and rehabilitative treatments for dysphagia, offering a broad overview of the meanings that eating and meals hold in individual life. Based on the close relationship between food and quality of life, the concept of palliative nutrition is introduced, aiming to ensure the pleasure of eating and, along with it, attention to the non-nutritional aspects that food provides to individuals. This book will be of interest to professionals and academics specializing in deglutology, dysphagia treatment, and related disciplines, i.e. speech-language pathologists, physicians, nurses, researchers, and other healthcare professionals who are involved in the assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Neuropsychiatric Care for Genetic Syndromes and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Children and adults with developmental disabilities are at increased risk for experiencing behavioral problems and psychiatric comorbidities compared to the general population and several neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with certain neuropsychiatric conditions. Because of language and cognitive differences, the clinical presentation of these conditions can differ from what is seen in the general population. Furthermore, research on treatment approaches for psychiatric comorbidities in these populations is extremely limited and evidence-based treatment guidelines do not exist. This book is a collection of neurodevelopmental disorders that are frequently associated with relatively distinct and common psychiatric co-morbidities across the lifespan. Each chapter addresses a different neurodevelopmental disorder by providing an overview, symptoms of common psychiatric co-morbidities, assessment strategies, psychosocial and biological treatments, and common medical co-morbidities the clinician needs to have basic knowledge of with regards to choosing safe and appropriate pharmacotherapy. Given how relatively rare many of these syndromes are, the practicing clinician generally does not encounter a sufficient number of cases during training or clinical practice to develop comfort and expertise in each of them. Furthermore, there are no easy to access evidence-based treatment guidelines. This succinct and practical resource fills a needed gap for an overview of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in a single resource with a clinical expert's approach to diagnosis and management.
