Both structure-based "bottom-up" and function- based "top-down" models offer coherent concepts by which to evaluate the experimental data. The goal of this book is to point out the advantages of a multidisciplinary, multistrategied approach to the brain. Part I of Neural Organization provides a detailed introduction to each of the three areas of structure, function, and dynamics. Structure refers to the anatomical aspects of the brain and the relations between different brain regions. Function refers to skills and behaviors, which are explained by means of functional schemas and biologically based neural networks. Dynamics refers to the use of a mathematical framework to analyze the temporal change of neural activities and synaptic connectivities that underlie brain development and plasticity--in terms of both detailed single-cell models and large-scale network models. In part II, the authors show how their systematic approach can be used to analyze specific parts of the nervous system--the olfactory system, hippocampus, thalamus, cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia--as well as to integrate data from the study of brain regions, functional models, and the dynamics of neural networks. In conclusion, they offer a plan for the use of their methods in the development of cognitive neuroscience.

Anxiety - The Inside Story
In Anxiety--The Inside Story, the author takes a critical look at modern psychiatry's twin notions that all mental disorders are biological in nature, but anxiety is hardly worth worrying about. By the simple process of taking a careful, detailed history, Niall McLaren shows that anxiety is far more common and far more destructive than mainstream psychiatry realizes. Detailed case histories chart how anxiety arises as a psychological disorder and how it reinforces itself to the point where it destroys lives. McLaren concludes that anxiety is a major factor in most mental disorders, especially depression and bipolar disorder. This book will change your understanding of mental disorders.Niall (Jock) McLaren writes as he speaks and he pulls no punches. I love this. People should listen to what he has to say about the academic corruption of his specialty, psychiatry. Read this book. The man is unique. And funny, as well. -- Prof. Peter Gotzsche, Director, Nordic Cochrane Centre, CopenhagenDebilitating anxieties are frequently misdiagnosed as "depression" by GPs and specialists alike. In this wonderfully accessible account of anxiety, Dr. McLaren demonstrates with great clarity - and very movingly - how a case history approach can help patients confront and overcome their psychological demons. He provides compelling evidence that instead of drugging people, listening to them attentively and analytically has to be the beginning of the healing process. -- Dr. Allan Patience, University of MelbourneAnxiety--The Inside Story offers readers a devastating, blistering critique of psychiatry, together with a provocative exploration of how anxiety, so often dismissed as a "minor" difficulty, should be understood as the root cause of so much suffering--which manifests in a diverse range of behaviors that get wrongly categorized as distinct psychiatric "illnesses." Niall McLaren presents a compelling case that psychiatric care in Australia and beyond needs to be completely rethought. -- Robert Whitaker, author of Mad in America and Psychiatry Under the InfluenceFrom Future Psychiatry Press Learn more at www.FuturePsychiartry.com
Anoikis
Anoikis is defined broadly as apoptosis that is inhibited by appropriate cell-matrix interactions. Normal and tumor cells vary widely in their sensitivity to anoikis, but, in general, metastatic tumor cells are inevitably anoikis-resistant. In particular, tumor cells that possess a cancer stem cell or mesenchymal phenotype, arising from the oncogenic Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT), are transcriptionally re-programmed to resist anoikis. While the anoikis response occurs through the mitochondrial pathway typically found in other apoptotic responses (e.g., DNA damage, death receptors, oxidative stress), the regulation of anoikis by cell-matrix signalling is unique and only partially characterized. The uniqueness of anoikis is: a. regulation by integrins, non-integrin matrix receptors, and the signaling complexes associated with them; b. regulation by metabolic changes occurring in response to attachment/detachment; c. regulation by oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes d. regulation by tumor microenvironment; e. regulation by EMT.

Ten Days in a Mad House
Ten Days in a Mad-House (1887) is a book by American investigative journalist Nellie Bly. For her first assignment for Joseph Pulitzer's famed New York World newspaper, Bly went undercover as a patient at a notorious insane asylum on Blackwell's Island. Spending ten days there, she recorded the abuses and neglect she witnessed, turning her research into a sensational two-part story for the New York World later published as Ten Days in a Mad-House. Checking into a New York boardinghouse under a false identity, Bly began acting in a disturbed, unsettling manner, prompting the police to be summoned. In a courtroom the next morning, she claimed to be suffering from amnesia, leading to her diagnosis as insane from several doctors. Sent to the Women's Lunatic Asylum, Bly spent ten days witnessing and experiencing rampant abuse and neglect. There, she noticed that many of the patients, who were constantly beaten and belittled by violent nurses and staff members, seemed perfectly sane or showed signs of having their conditions severely worsened during their time at the asylum. Served spoiled food, forced to live in squalor, and given ice-cold baths by unsympathetic attendants, the patients she met during her stay seemed as though abandoned by a city that had sent them there for the supposed purpose of healing. Showcasing her skill as a reporter and true pioneer of investigative journalism, Bly published her story to a captivated and inspired audience, setting in motion a process of reform that would change the city's approach to its asylums for the better. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Nellie Bly's Ten Days in a Mad-House is a classic work of American investigative journalism reimagined for modern readers.
Cortisol Pump101
Cortisol Pumping is the use of solu-cortef used in an infusion pump programmed to dispense cortisol according to the natural circadian rhythm by programming rates of delivery into the pump. This method bypasses the gastric passage and is able to deliver cortisol 24/7. With the pumping method, an adrenal insufficient patient can receive a constant supply of cortisol and can lesson the instability experienced with oral steroid cortisol replacement. Side effects due to malabsorption can be decreased and patients have reported increased quality of life. This method has also been shown to lessen the prevalence of adrenal crises and hospitalizations due to low cortisol. This book is a patient's guide to managing the cortisol pumping method.

Dealing with Your Own Depression
The BoV was written in the midst of family Vascular Dementia when instant decisions had to be made. The BoVII is written in a time of peace when contemplation, discernment and mental agility are the norm and decision making can take a long time before commitment to change can happen.Life is more restful and we can move back into the current cycle of age which is the Spiral of Life with time to reflect upon the past and the present before commitment to change and a period of self challenge of Loss with all of it's surrounding feelings.Loss is important to people. There are many kinds of Loss and they can differ within each Cycle of Age in a person's Spiral of Life.Nothing to hold on to --- LOST.The Verant Model deals with Loss and examples of how to deal with it. Sometimes it is difficult to know it's Cause. Normally it is a tragedy, a trauma and not a drama. Loss can usually be broken down into feelings that flow from Fear. These are always negative feelings which must be dealt with for personal survival. These can change into a life with positive feelings about self, as well as others. This is where you will reach after you have read and have worked through the theories in this book."There is none so blind as those who will not listen" (William Slater}"We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them" (Albert Einstein)"If it is hard to do, then you are doing it wrong" (Lynn Doolan)

The Clinical Use of Antipsychotic Plasma Levels
Clinicians recognize that monitoring psychotropic levels provides invaluable information to optimize therapy and track treatment adherence, but they lack formal training specifically focused on the use of plasma antipsychotic levels for these purposes. As new technologies emerge to rapidly provide these results, the opportunity to integrate this information into clinical care will grow. This practical handbook clarifies confusing concepts in the literature on use of antipsychotic levels, providing clear explanations for the logic underlying clinically relevant concepts such as the therapeutic threshold and the point of futility, and how these apply to individual antipsychotics. It offers accessible information on the expected correlation between dosages and trough levels, and also provides a clear explanation of how to use antipsychotic levels for monitoring oral antipsychotic adherence, and methods to help clinicians differentiate between poor adherence and variations in drug metabolism. An essential resource for psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and mental health professionals worldwide.

100 Low Sodium Recipes (for Big Appetites)
Ubiquitous. It's a word that means 'found everywhere'. For those of us on a low-sodium diet, it seems that sodium certainly classifies as a ubiquitous ingredient since it can feel as though almost everything we want to eat contains an excessively-high amount of sodium. To counter the widespread inclusion of sodium in food products we have the options of limiting our food choices or perhaps just eating smaller portion sizes. While these options are viable, they aren't necessarily realistic. Limiting our food choices quickly leads to staleness and boredom with our meals and can invite the chance of straying from our low-sodium practices. And for those of us who tend to eat more than the average person - the likelihood of being successful by eating smaller portion sizes just isn't practical as it can lead to ongoing hunger as well as repeated cravings. Written by a low-sodium practitioner, 100 Low Sodium Recipes for Big Appetites isn't 'just another low-sodium cookbook'. You won't find award-winning food photography or heartwarming anecdotes with each recipe. Rather, you'll find practical, low-sodium recipes that serve up an ample amount of food along with healthful information to assist you on your low-sodium journey, including: An overview of our relationship with sodium outlining what sodium is, how it affects us, and why it's so prevalent in the food industryOver 75 entr矇e recipes along with options for breakfast, sides, and dessertsEntr矇es focused on providing ample amounts of food while adhering to a low-sodium approachNutrition information based upon the entire recipe rather than 'per serving'Use of the familiar Nutrition Facts label to detail each recipe's nutrition information

First Episode Psychosis Services Fidelity Scale (Feps-Fs 1.0) and Manual
The First Episode Psychosis Services Fidelity Scale (FEPS-FS 1.0) is a highly reliable scale that assesses the degree to which mental health teams deliver specialized evidence-based care to people experiencing a first episode psychosis. The scale comprises 35 components each rated on a 1 to 5 scale. It has been used in the United States, Canada and Europe. It can be used for on site fidelity reviews, remote fidelity assessment or self-report. Published papers document its psychometric features and allow comparisons with a representative sample of US programs. It is suitable for research, quality improvement and accreditation. The Manual provides a practical guide for scoring a FEPS program against the criteria set out in the fidelity scale. It is designed to increase the reliability and consistency of ratings across different sites and assessors. It includes a definition and rationale for each component, data sources, decision rules and a structured interview guide. There are also modules to support training the key informant and data abstractor. Templates support structured feedback to programs for quality improvement. The scale can be adjusted to rate care for different diagnostic groups including the schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder and those with an attenuated psychosis syndrome.
Counseling Persons with Parkinson’s Disease
What is it like to live with a chronic illness? How can counselors support those living with one? Allan Hugh Cole Jr. offers answers to these two questions and so many more in Counseling Persons with Parkinson's Disease. In ten succinct chapters, Cole offers a glimpse into life with Parkinson's and presents an insightful approach to counseling someone living with a chronic illness. Cole was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2016, and--though it hardly happened overnight--he has since discovered a new passion and drive for life. A teacher of social workers and counselors for many years, Cole has unique insight into chronic illness and the care required to help someone diagnosed with one. He delves into the importance of accepting a chronic illness and how this can create an opportunity for personal transformation, newfound meaning, and rejuvenated purpose. In addition to emphasizing the importance of self-reflection, he also offers evidence-based approaches to counseling. Cole's approaches to counseling draw on task-centered social work practice. Throughout the book, he engages with five purposeful actions tied to principles of constructivism, Aristotelian thought, American pragmatism, and theories of interpretation (hermeneutics). At once informative, realistic, humorous, and hopeful, this is a thoughtful guide for clinicians who give counsel, educators who teach counseling, people supporting someone else, and anyone living with a chronic illness.

Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with heavy snoring is a common disorder, affecting more than 1 out of 10 adults, and is closely associated with hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression, and cognitive decline. Upper airway stimulation therapy is a novel, highly effective alternative method of treatment, involving a surgically implanted device that uses electrical stimulation of muscles to expand the upper airway, thereby addressing the primary cause of OSA. The first of its kind, Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a comprehensive review of the medical, surgical, and technical aspects of this innovative treatment for OSA. It delves into the current state of knowledge regarding upper airway stimulation, reviewing pathophysiological basis of sleep apnea and the specific mechanism by which upper airway stimulation provides airway support in this disorder. Evidence-based, this book provides practical guidelines for patient selection, clinical outcomes, surgical technique, long-term follow-up and adverse events, as well as for developing an upper airway stimulation program.

The Pathophysiology of Psyche
Mental health is ever changing and vibrant; this book looks at various aspects of depression, borderline personality disorder, narcissism, posttraumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. Chapter 1 begins by defining depression and looking at the different types of depression. The relationship between depression and brain anatomy is an issue that cannot be ignored; therefore, this chapter addresses this issue in depth. Does depression cause inflammation or is the opposite true, this has been discussed in chapter 2. There exists a correlation between the immune system, depression, and neurological disorders; chapter 3 looks at this correlation. At times depression can be resistant to conventional treatment; chapter 4 discusses how buprenorphine can be used to treat this kind of depression and how buprenorphine's chemical structure should be used in order to develop a new more effective mu opioid receptor and antagonist at the kappa receptors . People's way of life (lifestyle) has significantly contributed to depression. Many people nowadays are eating junk foods, are living sedentary lifestyles, have become addicted to illegal substances, nicotine, and alcohol. This kind of lifestyle has increased the risk of depression among many people. Chapter 5 addresses the impact this lifestyle has on depression and measures those engaged in such destructive habits can adopt to reduce their risk of depression or learn how to manage their depressive symptoms. Possible causes, neurological roots, brain anatomy, comorbid diagnosis and common misdiagnosis of borderline personality disorder as well as self harm and narcissism is pinpointed in chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 is stressing about current unsuccessful treatments for borderline personality disorder, therefore, new promising treatments are proposed in chapter 9. What is a hidden relationship between a silence stroke and PTDS symptoms is discussed in the chapter 10. The last chapter is looking deep into direct correlation between structural damages of gastrointestinal tract and antibodies as well as their impact on Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor or "BDNF" and neuroplasticity in people diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. In addition, new treatments are proposed such as fecal transplant and anti inflammatory diet to improved symptoms and quality of life of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.

The Neural Foundation of Experience
The Neural Foundation of ExperienceBy: David LaBerge The Neural Foundation of Experience is about neurons in the brain, and how some neurons make it possible for us to think about taking a walk in the park, and other neurons enable us to enjoy a walk in the park. Most of us are familiar with the "thinking" neurons, because they are like the "information-in and information-out" devices on the circuit board of a computer. But, unlike the computer, our brains also contain many other neurons which enable us to enjoy (savor) food, the sounds of music, and gazing at the face of a special person. These savoring neurons vibrate electrically instead of processing information. A drawing of the vibrating neuron is shown on the front cover of this book. Although this book discusses issues at the leading edge of neuroscience, the book is aimed at readers who have not taken introductory courses in biology, neuroscience, or psychology. Technical language is avoided wherever possible and I have included many illustrations to aid the understanding of ideas that may be unfamiliar to the reader. About the AuthorFor many years David LaBerge, Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Sciences, taught introductory classes in psychology at the University of Minnesota that ranged in size from 15 to 2200 students The moments he enjoyed the most were when the faces of students suddenly lit up with the understanding of a new idea about how their minds work. The moment of understanding comes to each person in their own special way, and to be an effective teacher LaBerge learned how to present a new idea in many different ways in order to reach students. He found that the best way to do this was to use a variety of visual illustrations, as demonstrated in this book.
Managing the Depression Puzzle
Managing the Depression Puzzle provides a comprehensive look at how to manage depression. The goal is to provide a wide range of pieces that might fit in your own unique depression puzzle, so you can pick and choose what does fit for you. No one strategy (or set of strategies) is going to work for every individual, but having information about what the options are will put you in a better position to make choices about your mental health. The book begins with an overview of depressive illnesses and subtypes. Strategies for dealing with depression are broken down into illness treatments and wellness promotion strategies. Illness treatment strategies like medication, ECT, and therapy, lift you from sick to less sick. Wellness promotion strategies, including mindfulness and self-care, help boost you up from less sick to well. Finally, the book looks at common issues faced by anyone living with a chronic mental illness.Managing the Depression Puzzle draws on the author's education and experience as a former mental health nurse and pharmacist, as well as personal experience living with treatment-resistant major depressive disorder. The approach is pragmatic, candid, and realistic, with the recognition that depression doesn't happen just one way; it is as unique as you are.
Multiple Sclerosis
Affecting an estimated 2.5 million people worldwide, multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common neurological cause of debilitation in young adults. Incurable, and with the precise causes still unknown, both diagnosis and management of the condition is complicated. This book summarizes the latest understanding of the causes of the disease, using accessible, bullet-point text to describe key clinical features and diagnostic criteria. Disease-modifying therapies and management of symptoms, including fatigue, tremor and cognitive changes, are covered in detail. With a chapter focusing solely on presentations in the emergency room, the importance of recognizing these neurological emergencies is emphasised, along with indications for admission in MS patients. The impact of MS on women's reproductive health and the increasing recognition of MS in pediatric patients is also explored. An up-to-date and practical approach to the accurate diagnosis and management of MS, this is an invaluable resource for both hospital and outpatient settings.
Gigantism and Acromegaly
Gigantism and Acromegaly brings together pituitary experts, taking readers from bench research, to genetic analysis, clinical analysis, and new therapeutic approaches. This book serves as a reference for growth hormone over-secretion and its diagnosis and treatment for endocrinologists, pediatricians, internists, and neurosurgeons, and for geneticists. Pharmaceutical companies may use it as a reference for drug development and research. Students, residents and fellows in medicine and endocrinology and genetics will also find it valuable as it provides a single up-to-date review of the molecular biology of gigantism and acromegaly as well as recommended approaches to evaluation and management. Acromegaly is a rare pituitary disorder that slowly changes its adult victim's appearance over time: larger hands and feet, bigger jaw, forehead, nose, and lips. Generally, a benign pituitary tumor is the cause and symptoms of acromegaly can vary from patient to patient, making a diagnosis difficult and prolonging suffering for years. Early detection is key in the management of acromegaly as the pathologic effects of increased growth hormone (GH) production are progressive and can be life-threatening as the result of associated cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and respiratory disorders and malignancies.

This Way to Language
If you suspect your child has autism, this book is for you. Neuroscientist and inventor of Mental Imagery Therapy for Autism (MITA) Dr. Andrey Vyshedskiy explains how to give your child the best chance to think and speak at his or her age level. This book is a result of a five-year study of children with autism. It zeroes in on the most promising use of time, effort, and resources and is a practical day-to-day guide for parents like you. At the heart of the book is Dr. Vyshedskiy's methodology for strengthening language pathways in the brain of a young child. The methodology doesn't simply train children to memorize new words. It teaches them to connect the words, understand syntax, and draw conclusions-all the skills necessary to master language and move on to other school subjects. The book contains twenty-nine daily exercises to help your child progress from little or no verbal ability to age-appropriate and advanced levels. MITA does not rely on trained therapists and gives you, the parent, full control over your child's development. To aid you in this challenging task, the book discusses all major areas of your child's life. It also details personal experiences of parents who have brought their children along the path to complex language.
