Innovative Leadership for Health Care

Ingram 出版
2021/04/22 出版

Suzanna FitzpatrickMichael Morrow-FoxNeil E. GrunbergAs we face a global pandemic, the importance of effective health care leadership has become glaringly apparent. We have health care systems, practitioners, and researchers that have conquered many diseases, including smallpox, tuberculosis, and polio, and developed effective treatments for many other physical and mental health conditions. Still, cooperation, coordination, compassion, communication, and a focus on virtuous character among health care professionals and the general public remain challenging and even more essential. So, you might ask, why this book? This text is the tenth book in the Innovative Leadership series. Over the past decades, we have seen leaders' expectations increase as the world has become more interconnected and complex. Great strides have been made in learning about the brain and how it impacts human behavior and leadership development. Leaders must update how they think about leadership (their internal algorithm) and how they behave as leaders. Innovative Leadership is the art of evolving how leaders lead to ensure they can weather their organizations through the broad range of changes they will face over the next decade and beyond. In times of dramatic change, our leaders must move institutions forward and create the thriving future we hope to leave for future generations. This book provides health care workers with frameworks and tools based on the most current research in leadership, psychology, neuroscience, and physiology to help them update or innovate how they lead and build the practices necessary to continue to update their leadership skills. In 2014 we published the Innovative Leadership Book for Physician Leaders. We wrote this new book to update the 2014 volume based on the latest research and to serve all health care professionals.

Testing Knowledge

Ingram 出版
2021/04/09 出版

This volume presents the collective adventure of Dingdingdong, the Institute for the Co-production of Knowledge about Huntington's Disease, founded in 2012 between Paris and Brussels.Katrin Solhdju's Testing Knowledge: Toward an Ecology of Diagnosis pursues the question of taming the violence of the new species of medical foreknowledge represented by genetic testing. Adopting historical and epistemological perspectives on diagnostic situations, including observations from anthropological field research, speculative storytelling, and ancient oracles, Testing Knowledge proposes a new ecology of predictive diagnostic gestures, which potentially concern us all.Testing Knowledge is preceded by the Dingdingdong collective's Manifesto (2013), which tells the story of the young Alice Rivi癡res, who in 2006 took the presymptomatic, genetic test, foretelling her that she will eventually develop Huntington's. Her first-person account of the revelation of her test results, which she experienced as an act of poisoning or cursing, pulls the reader into the manifold ethical, psychological, and existential issues inherent to medical predictions.Testing Knowledge is preceded by a foreword from Alice Wexler, author of Mapping Fate: A Memoir of Family, Risk, and Genetic Research, and followed by an afterword by philosopher Isabelle Stengers.

The Quality Improvement Challenge in Healthcare equips readers with the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement successful operational improvement initiatives. Designed for healthcare providers seeking to apply QI in practice, this valuable resource delivers step-by-step guidance on improvement methodology, team dynamics, and organizational change management in the context of real-world healthcare environments. The text integrates the principles and practices of Lean Six Sigma, human-centered design, and neurosciences to present a field-tested framework. Detailed yet accessible chapters cover topics including identifying and prioritizing the problem, developing improvement ideas, defining the scope of the project, organizing the QI team, implementing and sustaining the improvement, and much more. Clearly explaining each step of the improvement process, this practical guide: Presents the material in a logical sequence, gradually introducing each step of the process with clearly defined workflow templates Features a wealth of examples demonstrating QI application, and case studies emphasizing key concepts to highlight successful and unsuccessful improvement initiatives Includes end-of-chapter exercises and review questions for assessing and reinforcing comprehension Offers practical tips and advice on communicating effectively, leading a team meeting, conducting a tollgate review, and motivating people to change Leading QI projects requires a specific set of skills not taught in medical school. Building a High-Value Health System

Rifat,Atun  著
Ingram 出版
2021/04/06 出版

Countries and institutions worldwide face the challenge of planning and paying for health care that effectively meets the needs of citizens and employees. While there are many criticisms of existing healthcare models, current literature offers little guidance for individuals who want to carry out the work of redesigning and improving their health system. Using a step-by-step format, Building a High-Value Health System systematically provides analytical tools and functional skills for designing and implementing a health system that fits a population's needs. Active, learner-directed methods teach readers how to assess the needs of a population, analyze the performance of a health system, assess available capacity, and develop system design options that are feasible within this context. The book then describes the strategies through which change agents can implement and sustain these systems in the future. Through global case studies and detailed guidance, Building a High-Value Health System prepares readers to analyze and understand their own health system and take actions to build a better one.

Media Analysis and Public Health

Routledge 出版
2021/04/05 出版

This volume showcases new approaches to studying public health in traditional and emerging media, suggesting that we need more analyses that focus on the production of media and on power dynamics, as well as studies of audience reception of media messages. The collection asks a variety of questions about the role of media in analysing public health. Contributors ask: who is influential in producing the stories we see in the press and on social media? Who benefits, and who is damaged, by media debates on health topics? They investigate the role of big business in seeking to shape public opinion and consumption in print and online media; how issues such as hand washing come to be framed over time by newspapers; how conflicts over immunisations get covered; how health promotion messages do their work; and the positive role of online media in helping foster drug safety. Together, they reach the conclusion that since mass media is a crucial element of civic society, more in-depth understanding of how it works and what impacts it has on public health is essential.Given the crucial role of the media in shaping health debates, pushing certain issues up the policy agenda, defining problems for audiences and presenting potential solutions, this book's analysis will be of interest to all those studying how the media shape policy, as well as public health researchers with an interest in mass communication. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Public Health.

Bringing Value to Healthcare

Ingram 出版
2021/04/05 出版

The healthcare sector is on the cusp of sweeping disruption. The hallmarks of the old system-pricing that's disconnected from outcomes and incentives for treating sickness rather than maintaining health-are no longer sustainable. And yet, after decades of financial success, it's difficult for most established industry players to grapple with meaningful changes to their business models. In their latest book, Bringing Value to Healthcare: Practical Steps for Getting to a Market-Based Model, Rita Numerof and Michael Abrams lay out the roadmap to a healthcare system that is accountable for delivering optimal patient outcomes at a sustainable cost. Based on in-depth research and decades of experience consulting with leading hospitals, insurers, and device and drug manufacturers, Numerof and Abrams provide a market-based approach to addressing the ills of the current healthcare system. In addition to highlighting industry challenges and opportunities, the authors also outline the changes required of consumers, employers, and policy makers to move to a patient-centered model characterized by value, accountability, and transparency. This is the handbook for payer, provider, pharmaceutical, and medical device executives who are seeking to preserve today's profitability while positioning their organizations for success in the very different markets of tomorrow. The book's guidance is illuminated by case studies and each chapter concludes with a self-assessment tool and key questions.Getting to a new future isn't easy. But if it can't be envisioned, it can't be realized. Bringing Value to Healthcare is that critical first step.

When We Do Harm

Ingram 出版
2021/04/01 出版

Medical mistakes are more pervasive than we think. How can we improve outcomes? An acclaimed MD's rich stories and research explore patient safety. Patients enter the medical system with faith that they will receive the best care possible, so when things go wrong, it's a profound and painful breach. Medical science has made enormous strides in decreasing mortality and suffering, but there's no doubt that treatment can also cause harm, a significant portion of which is preventable. In When We Do Harm, practicing physician and acclaimed author Danielle Ofri places the issues of medical error and patient safety front and center in our national healthcare conversation. Drawing on current research, professional experience, and extensive interviews with nurses, physicians, administrators, researchers, patients, and families, Dr. Ofri explores the diagnostic, systemic, and cognitive causes of medical error. She advocates for strategic use of concrete safety interventions such as checklists and improvements to the electronic medical record, but focuses on the full-scale cultural and cognitive shifts required to make a meaningful dent in medical error. Woven throughout the book are the powerfully human stories that Dr. Ofri is renowned for. The errors she dissects range from the hardly noticeable missteps to the harrowing medical cataclysms. While our healthcare system is--and always will be--imperfect, Dr. Ofri argues that it is possible to minimize preventable harms, and that this should be the galvanizing issue of current medical discourse.

It's Your Life Too!

Ingram 出版
2021/03/31 出版

There is no book on the market that addresses the needs of long-term caregivers regardless of the challenges faced by their loved ones. Most books focus on specific illnesses or conditions such as survivors of stroke, head or spinal injuries, dementia and Alzheimer's, or parenting an or disabled child. Additionally, books tend to lump all caregivers into one group--those dealing with short-term illnesses, those facing end-of-life issues, and long-term care.Caring for someone who is expected to live for a relatively long period of time with an illness or condition poses specific and unique challenges for the caregiver. This book pinpoints the needs and strategies of this population. While some books focus on "surviving" long-term caregiving, It's My Life Too demonstrates the life of the caregiver is of equal importance and that caregiving can be a rewarding and gratifying experience.

2021/03/30 出版

The Geneva Declaration, a modern successor to the Hippocratic Oath, was recently revised to include the clause I will attend to my own health, well-being, and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard. As the practice of medicine enters the modern era, a combination ofdisruptive factors, including the increased use of electronic health records and changes to the US healthcare system, have left physicians struggling to find happiness in their careers. Principles of Medical Professionalism emphasizes an often-neglected aspect of medical professionalism: how and why physicians ought to focus on their self-care, happiness, and well-being as they advance through the process of socialization into the medical community of practice. This book will helpstudents manage their expectations about the profession while becoming more resilient to the disruptions in the field and equip health professionals of all levels with the practical knowledge and tools to integrate the values of medical professionalism into their professional identity. The 10-Minute Physical Exam

Ingram 出版
2021/03/09 出版

The 10-Minute Physical Exam ̶ recognizing medical syndromes, is a training manual directed at all who seek to improve skill, confidence, and clinical diagnosis in physical examination. The two-part manual departs from traditional manuals. In part one, sole emphasis is on developing a consistent, easily performed, whole body screening examination that lessens the likelihood of missing detectable clinical signs, that often occur with unstructured and inconsistent routines. The routine is sequenced in four parts, the mini-exams, that conform to the patient's physical position during the examination and, once practiced and perfected, are combined into a single fluid routine that can be completed in less than ten minutes.Proper gown and draping techniques allow discrete but adequate exposure of the body.Part two is a compendium of 51 medical syndromes, each with a list of potential clinical signs and a facing page with an annotated patient figure, in color. The purpose is for interest and to serve as a reminder that clinical diagnosis requires knowledge of the clinical signs of medical conditions. There are additional blank ages and figures for readers to add their own syndromes. This is an attractively illustrated manual that will become a cherished resource for any clinician.

Kostensteuerung F羹r Gesundheitseinrichtungen

Ingram 出版
2021/03/06 出版

India’s Public Health Care Delivery

Palgrave M 出版
2021/03/06 出版

This book describes the present awful state of India's Public Health Care Delivery, its dismal planning and implementation. It argues that it can be remedied comprehensively and effectively, using its 'own already present' resources. A radical re-evaluation of some sacrosanct ideas and discarding many of these, especially in Primary Care and its structure is required. It can be done without disadvantage to the last man served. This book starts with the sea change India has undergone and emphasizes new ways of managing health. High quality work force creation and its deployment, an unsolved problem is effectively given a solution. The bulk of the book discusses the entire public health care structure and function and how it can be newly laid out with proper work force allocation, hitherto grossly inadequate, including professionals from other training backgrounds. It is total solution that will help India to achieve the goal of Universal Health Care.

The Allied Health Professions

Ingram 出版
2021/03/01 出版

The allied health professions have gained legitimacy through the pursuit of research evidence and the standardisation of practice. Yet there remains very little analysis or understanding of these professions. Adopting theory from the sociology of health professions, this unique text explores the sociological, economic, political and philosophical pressures that have shaped the professions. Drawing on case studies and examples from occupations including optometrists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists to emerging vocations, including pedorthists and allied health assistants, this book offers an innovative comparison of allied health professions in Australia and Britain. By telling the story of their past, this original book prepares the allied health professions for a new and different future.

Educating Oncology Nurses on Chaplaincy Referrals

Ingram 出版
2021/02/25 出版

When Dr. Simmons began the research that inspired this book, she simply wanted to help the nurses at her hospital improve their understanding of when to call a chaplain for an oncology patient. The research led her on a journey that not only taught her how to see the bigger picture behind the ordeal a patient and family must face but allowed her to benefit the entire care team in the process. As the author educates readers on the increased need to recognize when patients will benefit from a chaplaincy referral, they will gain a deeper understanding of Biblical perspectives on sickness and suffering. Anyone who has ever battled serious illness, worked in a medical setting, or had family or friends who were ill, will appreciate this in-depth study. The dedication that inspired Dr. Simmons to recognize chaplaincy as a vital part of the care team is both hopeful and inspiring. It is a reminder that in the journey of suffering, no one has to go it alone. The journey is about teamwork.

Ungoverned and Out of Sight

Ingram 出版
2021/02/16 出版

If health policy truly seeks to improve population health and reduce health disparities, addressing homelessness must be a priority Homelessness is a public health problem. Nearly a decade after the great recession of 2008, homelessness rates are once again rising across the United States, with the number of persons experiencing homelessness surpassing the number of individuals suffering from opioid use disorders annually. Homelessness presents serious adverse consequences for physical and mental health, and ultimately worsens health disparities for already at-risk low-income and minority populations. While some state-level policies have been implemented to address homelessness, these services are often not designed to target chronic homelessness and subsequently fail in policy implementation by engendering barriers to local homeless policy solutions. In the face of this crisis, Ungoverned and Out of Sight seeks to understand the political processes influencing adoption of best-practice solutions to reduce chronic homelessness in US municipalities. Drawing on unique research from three exemplar municipal case studies in San Francisco, CA, Atlanta, GA, and Shreveport, LA, this volume explores conflicting policy solutions in the highly decentralized homeless policy space and provides recommendations to improve homeless governance systems and deliver policies that will successfully diminish chronic homelessness. Until issues of authority and fragmentation across competing or misaligned policy spaces are addressed through improved coordination and oversight, local and national policies intended to reduce homelessness may not succeed.

Bug Out Bag Encyclopedia

Joseph,Yao  著
Ingram 出版
2021/02/12 出版

What if...you had the power to choose life over death? Disaster can take many forms including those created by nature and those by man. In addition to preparing for hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and the like, you need to also be ready for civil unrest. Even former safe havens like gated, affluent, suburban neighborhoods have been invaded by angry mobs. People are alarmed and buying firearms in record numbers, including many first-time buyers. But firearms alone are not enough. Will you be a survivor? You can take control and choose life by taking the time now to assemble a Bug Out Bag (also known as a "BOB") to help you survive when disaster strikes. The key is to prepare now. When disaster strikes, it's time to "grab and go." There may be no time to gather things from around your house. And it will be difficult or impossible to shop for items that others who failed to prepare are also desperately trying to procure. This book saves you valuable time and expense learning how to put together your survival bag or BOB. Chapters are organized to make it quick and easy for you to find the information you need. Those of you who already have a BOB can use this book to determine if there may be other items to consider adding to your kit or to perhaps replace existing items. Some of the information covered in this book includes: ● The concept that three BOBs are better than one and why you should consider setting up bags to help you survive short-, medium-, and long-term emergencies● A list of recommended items and the rationale for including them in your BOBs● A detailed list of items organized by survival category (e.g., 1st aid, water, fire, shelter, food, communication, etc) along with the size, price, and weight of each item. The items are coded to tell you which of the three bags they are best suited for.● Specific products in different price ranges are presented to help people with different budgets.● Learn how item selection within specific survival categories differs depending upon the anticipated duration of the disaster.● How to organize the survival items inside your BOB for easy access and recognition● How your BOB items will differ if you're on foot versus escaping by automobile● Items to include for your pet● Reference list for additional information Use this book to: ● Create your own personalized list of items within each survival category to put into your three customized BOBs● Calculate an estimate of the overall price and weight for each of your BOBs based upon your item selection. You can then add or subtract items from your BOBs to optimize price and weight. When feasible, you'll be better off staying in place where you'll have the benefit of your network of friends and family as well as shelter and supplies afforded by your home or office. Under dire circumstances, you may be forced to flee fast. The information in this book will ensure that you have the critical items necessary for you to survive whether you're able to shelter in place or if you're forced to escape to another location. Building a BOB is your survival insurance. Like having car or medical insurance: ● You hope you never have to use it● It's too late to get it when an emergency happens● And, you'll be ever so happy you have it when you need it! Life or death in the face of an emergency? The choice is yours. Empower yourself. Get started now to help ensure your survival.

Prescription Comedy

Ingram 出版
2021/02/11 出版

The secret to healing from physician burnout, re-connecting with loved ones and rediscovering daily joy resides in an unlikely place: the comedy club. In Prescription Comedy, author Dr. Pranathi Kondapaneni shares her personal journey with on-the-job burnout and how an almost accidental foray into the world of comedy proved key to her cure. What you'll discover: Why so many physicians succumb to burnout and suffer a loss of faith as they toil under the weight of a medical system that doesn't value connection Where the true value of comedy truly lies: in cultivating a connection with the audience that extends far beyond making them laughHow Dr. Kondapaneni's personal quest to improve the physician-patient communication bond led her to discover and explore comedy Simple lessons that can help you defeat physician burnout"In sharing my journey, I aim to help fellow physicians who feel downtrodden, disenfranchised, and disenchanted by the weight of this medical system," says Dr. Kondapaneni. "Unless one has walked in the shoes of a shattered physician, it's hard to understand the swamp which can swallow a physician whole." This book was written for physicians, who are often seen as lucky to have a stable, well-paying career. They ultimately carry the burden of treating our most precious resource: health. Couple this responsibility with a broken healthcare system, and physicians face a hefty load indeed. The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.-Mark Twain
