Jack,Bragen  著
Lulu.com 出版
2025/01/10 出版

This book is written by a man of sixty years who became severely psychotic at eighteen years and was diagnosed schizophrenic. For forty years, Mr. Bragen has been proactively dealing with the realities of the illness, the tough realities of the world. In his twenties he was successfully employed in electronic repair, in delivery driving, and in night time cleanup. In his thirties, Jack enjoyed more of a social life. He married his wife in 1997, and stuck it out for 27 years. Bragen has been medication and treatment compliant for almost all of the last forty years of this illness. But he has been determined to have a life. For the past twenty five years he's struggled to have a writing career, this book included. He has numerous publishing credits to date and has been published hundreds of times in magazines and newspapers. And yet, Mr. Bragen has done all of this while mentally disabled. Nurses of Los Angeles

2025/01/02 出版

Nurses of Los Angeles: Uncapping the Mystery details the leaders, the schools, and the lives of nurses who worked daily to achieve their goals. More than 450 color photographs, from 1858 to 2024, accompany each historical story and biography as it is told. When California became a state in 1850, the treeless basin named Los Angeles had no newspapers, colleges, libraries, or public schools. Residents obtained water from open canals in front of their homes that were used for bathing and dumping trash. Cows grazed in open fields. Injured people lay unattended in squalor, and orphans roamed the streets for handouts. In 1855, Bishop Thaddeus Amat wrote to Spain, France, and the East Coast of the United States to ask officials for help in caring for the needy residents and orphans. The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul responded and sent six nurse nuns from Maryland. Those six nurses opened the first Los Angeles hospital in 1857--the only hospital until the county finally built one in 1878.In the early 1900s, people flocked to Los Angeles for the health benefits. Sanitariums and sanatoriums proliferated: many hoped to cure their tuberculosis; some just wanted rest and relaxation in the perfect climate and fresh sea air. As the city expanded, more hospitals opened. Nurses organized schools of Nursing within the hospitals to meet the needs of the community. They practiced Public Health Nursing in depressed areas of the city, often populated by immigrants who could not afford health care. They succeeded in becoming the first city in the U.S. to convince the County to pay a salary for a Public Health Nurse. They became expert housing inspectors during their patient visits. Nurses thrived and continued to expand their educational methods. They moved from a hospital apprentice model to the breadth of college degrees available to other professions. They created advanced clinicians: nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists. None of this came easily; they worked diligently to fight for a place in society they knew they deserved.

People’s knowledge of first aid

2024/12/28 出版

The topic of first aid or pre-hospital care is frequently found in national and international literature. However, in most cases it is related to the knowledge, skills or training of health professionals or students and is rarely addressed to other audiences. The lay population, often neglected by academics in this field, is the one that frequently attends emergency and disaster situations and provides first aid, either out of an instinctive desire to help their neighbour or out of necessity caused by the delay in the arrival of first aid services due to bureaucratic problems and travel. The need for first aid training is also considered necessary only for health professionals, especially in emergency and urgent care services. However, recent studies emphasise the importance of teaching other people from different age groups through health education in order to reduce injuries and save lives in emergency situations that are always, or almost always, unpredictable.

Health Care Finance, Economics, and Policy for Nurses

Betty,Rambur  著
2024/12/20 出版

Delivers knowledge to support a lifetime of informed, impactful advocacy This concise, practical text---written for all nursing roles and levels of experience--synthesizes the complexities of health economics, finance, payment, ethics, and civic responsibility into an easy-to-understand, non-partisan guide to health policy and activism. It is distinguished from similar texts by its discussion of economic and financial dynamics in health care as a precursor to policy and advocacy in nursing. In addition to being revised and updated, the book includes substantially expanded material on artificial intelligence and large language platforms; information, quality, safety and costs; health equity; civics; laws, administrative rules and Supreme Court decisions; nurses on boards; Medicare Advantage and Part D, outpatient pharmaceuticals; the impact of mergers and acquisitions on nurses' salaries and career opportunities; and an entirely new chapter on the nursing workforce. Written by a health economics and policy expert, dean, and award-winning teacher recognized as a "policy luminary" by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the resource discusses in depth the relationship between nursing and health care economics. It traces the history of our health care system from the early 1900s through today and discusses the intersection of ethics and economics to provide nurses with the tools to thoughtfully analyze dilemmas arising from today's focus on the bottom line. Using a step-by-step skill-building guide, the book describes--with the support of illustrative case--how to use economic principles to shape organizations and public policy. It breaks down complex financial principles to facilitate understanding for nurses with no prior knowledge of this discipline. Also included is updated information on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and key subsequent legislation and Supreme Court decisions. Additionally, the book is compatible with online teaching and coursework. Faculty resources include PowerPoint slides, a test bank, comprehensive review questions and sample syllabi. Purchase includes online access via most mobile devices or computers. New to the Third Edition: Chapter 14: The Health Care Workforce: What Nurses Need to Know Incorporates emerging innovations including social media applications, The Internet of Health Things (IoHT), and artificial intelligence Addresses reimbursement and payment reform, links to upstream social determinants of health and health equity, and value-informed nursing practice Discusses mergers, acquisitions and nurses' career opportunities and income Provides up-to-date information on private equity's growing footprint, and how it effects nursing practice Key Features: Distills complex concepts into easy-to-understand information Addresses systems-based practice domain of AACN Essentials Provides engaging case examples for all nursing roles and levels of experience Authored by a leading nurse expert, policy leader, former dean, and award-winning instructor Guides readers in using economic principles to shape organizations and public policy Provides chapter quizzes, PowerPoint slides, test bank, comprehensive review questions, and sample syllabi

Re-significations and perspectives of the lived

2024/12/18 出版

In this book, we cover the family experience of caring for a chronically ill child with Schinzel-Giedion syndrome (SSG), a very rare, congenital and neurodegenerative disease. This is a comprehensive study carried out with the family of Bruno and J矇ssica, the parents of baby Ricardo. Aware of the short life expectancy imposed by SSG, the family takes advantage of and maximises their son's time to live, both in the sense of extending it as much as possible and offering the best care 'of, in and for' life. We have grasped a notion of care that encompasses and integrates the needs of the beginning of human life, flowing and spreading through care during illness. We invite the reader to think of time as a confluence in which the past and future overlap the present, which is an inexhaustible source of the lived, through which life gushes incessantly. Health services and professionals need to rethink the protocol and rigidly formalised times that, as a rule, guide their actions and the organisation of care processes, in an effort to embrace the temporality of living and caring for children with other normalities.

Ageing and quality of life in the community

2024/12/17 出版

The process of population ageing has given rise to a number of debates about the new paths of health policy for the elderly. All the changes related to old age are determining factors for the vulnerability of these individuals in terms of the risks to their health, as well as their Quality of Life (QoL). This is directly related to emotional, cognitive, psychological and functional aspects. This book presents the results relating to the profile of community-dwelling elderly people registered with the Primary Health Care service in two municipalities in the north-east of Brazil. It also discusses the association between the sociodemographic profile of community-dwelling elderly people and aspects of their Quality of Life. Carried out through a rich bibliographical review, the discussion of the subject relates the results of the work to important findings from national and international research, published in highly relevant journals. This book is therefore aimed at health professionals in Primary Health Care, as well as scholars of ageing and the general public, given its scope.

This foundational overview of simulation for nurse educators addresses the pressing demand for a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for nurse educators teaching with simulation in the ever-evolving landscape of nursing education. The competencies outlined by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing/Canadian Nurse Educators Institute (CASN/CNEI) for Simulation Nurse Educators serve as a guiding framework in this text for the exploration of the essential elements of simulation-based nursing education. These competencies encompass a wide spectrum of skills and knowledge areas that are necessary for nurse educators engaged in simulation-based pedagogy. This text was created as an adjunct to the four modules of the Canadian Certified Simulation Nurse Educator (CCSNE) program and to provide nurse educators across Canada with updated information and resources to support them in incorporating innovative teaching methodologies into their teaching skill sets. The CCSNE program was developed to foster excellence in nursing education by providing faculty development in simulation-based pedagogy, practices, and technologies that follow the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice TM (HSSOBP). Recognizing the diversity of expertise among nurse educators in simulation-based pedagogy, this text offers a robust starting point for those seeking to enhance their teaching skills in simulation. There is a broad complement of practice learning needs for moving nursing education forward in the area of simulation-based pedagogy, and this text provides a foundation and starting point for learning.

How Living in Residential Care Affects Older People's Mental Health

2024/12/02 出版

In the UK, residential care facilities are in demand, and their importance to the healthcare system is unquestionable. The study aims to analyze the existing primary research evidence on residential care and its impact on older people and to report a summary and critical appraisal of the research findings. The research used a systematic literature review (SLR) design. The researchers searched 5 electronic databases (PubMed Central, PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus, Embase and BMC Geriatrics) Based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis standard (PRISMA). The qualitative synthesis involved extracting data and evaluating bias risk using a validated guideline, conducting meta-analysis using Mean Difference and Standard Mean Difference calculations, and quality-testing the evidence using the GRADE approach. The study revealed that residential care, along with various factors like environments, social connections, care location and standard of care significantly impact the well-being, QOL, and overall health of older adults.

High Reliability Healthcare

Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

Mistakes can be fatal--this reality is all too familiar in the healthcare industry. Do you want better clinical outcomes, fewer errors, increased productivity, and highly reliable patient care? High Reliability Healthcare offers some actionable tips from the safest and most reliable industry ever: the nuclear navy. For over seventy-five years, the nuclear navy has operated highly enriched nuclear reactors with sailors in their twenties at the helm and has never experienced an accident. As Forbes reported, "The [US] Nuclear Navy has the best safety record of any industry." Jeffrey Kuhlman, MD, MPH, a retired navy physician and physician to the president, and Robert Roncska, DBA, a retired navy captain in the nuclear navy who carried the nuclear codes (AKA the football) for President George W. Bush, understand this better than anyone. After excelling as leaders in the military, they recognized the organizational leadership and team-building skills they learned in the US Nuclear Navy could be applied to healthcare--an industry in dire need of an upgrade. With hundreds of thousands of patients becoming permanently disabled or dying each year due to medical errors, it's clear that the old approach to healthcare safety isn't working. Kuhlman and Roncska propose applying the wisdom of an unlikely mentor--the US Nuclear Navy--to patient care. In High Reliability Healthcare, they provide practical tools to turn healthcare into a high-reliability organization--one that is safe and efficient even in a high-risk environment. They're ready to bring to healthcare what the nuclear navy has been successfully practicing for over seventy-five years.

Key Concepts and Issues in Nursing Ethics

P Anne,Scott  著
Springer 出版
2024/11/17 出版

This second edition offers updates, new topics, and new short case studies, based on real stories from the health care arena, ensuring that each chapter of this book is rooted in descriptions of nursing practise that are grounded, salient narratives of nursing care. The reader is assisted to explore the ethical dimension of nursing practice: what it is and how it can be portrayed, discussed, and analysed within a variety of practice and theoretical contexts. One of the unique contributions of this book is to consider nursing not only in the context of the individual nurse - patient relationship but also as a social good that is of necessity limited, due to the ultimate limits on the nursing and health care resource. This book will help the reader consider what good nursing looks like, both within the context of limitations on resources, during crises situations, and under conditions of scarcity. Indeed, any discussion of ethical issues in nursing should be well grounded in aconceptualisation of nursing that nursing students and practising nursing can recognise, accept and engage with. Nursing, like medicine, social work and teaching has a clear moral aim - to do good. In the case of nursing to do good for the patient. However it is vital that in the pressurised, constrained, post-COVID-19 pandemic health service of the 21st century, we help nurses explore what this might mean for nursing practice and what can reasonably be expected of the individual nurse, and the nursing profession, in terms of good nursing care.

Nursing in health

2024/11/10 出版

Nursing is a profession committed to the health of human beings and the community. It works to promote, protect, recover health and rehabilitate people, respecting ethical and legal precepts. The nursing professional participates as a member of society and in actions aimed at satisfying the health needs of the population, respecting the life, dignity and rights of the human person. Given this all-encompassing importance, I see nursing as guiding a consistent and organized care process. I also see nursing as a key player in the health system, and so I realize that we need to study it more and more, and in a targeted way. We need to study it in the knowledge that its technical and scientific depth can change the health history of Brazil, especially that of each of our patients. Studying contributes to valuing our profession and is the only way to become a valued professional. In this book we will focus on nursing care, with research carried out in this area of knowledge.

Palliative care for homeless people

Selina,Eder  著
2024/11/10 出版

Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life of patients and their families by identifying and alleviating pain and psychosocial problems at an early stage. However, homeless people often find it difficult to access this important support. Social stigmatization, mistrust of the healthcare system and the unpredictable course of the disease make caring for this population group a particular challenge. In addition, addictions and the constant change of location make it difficult to plan ahead and provide care. This book sheds light on the difficulties and shortcomings of palliative care for homeless people. Through the voices of those affected and care staff, perspectives are uncovered that should lead to better and equal care for this often neglected group.

The integration of new nursing staff from abroad

2024/11/10 出版

The already serious shortage of specialists in healthcare and nursing has become even more dramatic due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This has resulted in beds being closed in acute inpatient and outpatient settings. The care of patients can no longer be guaranteed and the demographic development paints a difficult scenario for the future. Attempts are being made to counteract this with various solutions, one of which is the recruitment of foreign nursing staff. Although sufficiently described in the literature, the perspective of existing nursing staff, who are responsible for the induction and social integration of new nursing staff from abroad, is given little consideration. This study attempts to shed light on the experiences and burdens of existing nursing staff during the integration process in order to draw conclusions for future measures to complement a successful integration concept.

Physiotherapy in the Universe of Older People with Intellectual Disabilities

2024/10/31 出版

Among the many reasons for writing a book on physiotherapy in the intellectual disability of the elderly is the lack of specific literature and the belief that, because people with intellectual disabilities are in the process of ageing, most of them prematurely, there would be no need to work hard on their motor skills. For a better understanding, the authors begin by clarifying how human ageing occurs and its multiple organic repercussions, highlighting the functional changes typical of senescence and the urgency of developing an active lifestyle, from a physical and mental point of view. The second chapter highlights the up-to-date characterisation of intellectual disability and concludes by establishing a relationship between intellectual disability and ageing, as well as raising awareness of the importance of interdisciplinary care. The third and final chapter covers the various ways of facilitating, maintaining and perfecting movement in these people, with physiotherapy emerging as an alternative for maintaining functional capacity, which is concluded in the final considerations.

Reflex relaxation and back stimulation techniques

2024/10/26 出版

These days, health problems are often linked to stress. A well-rested person suffers less exhaustion and fatigue, and is less sensitive to stress. Stress causes hyperfunction of the nervous system, and hypertonicity of the musculoskeletal system, particularly in the back. The back is hypersensitive to reflex stimulation. Stimulation of the muscular and ligament receptors in the different muscle layers of the back, as well as the various skin corpuscles, results in muscle relaxation and the secretion of well-being hormones (endorphin, dopamine...).Reflex back massage brings general relaxation and emotional release.
