Capitalism in the Platform Age
This open access book provides an overview of urban digital platforms such as Airbnb and Deliveroo, which, along with Amazon, Google, Facebook, and other IT companies, constitute by now the infrastructures for other businesses to operate on and for our social life to go on. These platforms serve as standards-based techno-economic systems that simultaneously capture cooperation through remote coordination and organize labor via algorithm management.Based on a three-years research project, this contributed book outlines a general theory of platform capitalism that conceives these platforms not only as technical devices, but as generative engines that operate at the interface of several aspects, such as digitalization of forms of social cooperation; algorithm-based management of labor and participation; and private and vertical appropriation of profits. These elements are somehow iconic of the capitalist evolution of the last decades, and they open up a reflection on new forms of "primitive accumulation" (in particular regarding data), on the mechanisms used to capture and extract social surplus value, and on the logistic-financial dimensions of capital. Finally, in light of the transformations associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors examine how platforms can evolve into hegemonic organizational structures.Assuming we are all already living in the age of the platform, this book takes a multifaceted approach--combining sociology with urban studies, and political sciences with economics--to grasp the challenges our societies face in terms of ensuring fair economic growth, adequate social protections, and labor rights. It will appeal to anyone interested in digital platforms and how they are changing the organization of labor, urban spaces, and forms of governance.

Women At Work
While working women have achieved much, the issues of the right to work, equal opportunities and rewards, healthy work environment, unionisation and, in particular, the problems of 'the double working life' are still very much alive. In Women at Work Kaye Hargreaves examines the crucial issues, many of them forcefully articulated in workers' own lively accounts. She shows that the dramatically increased participation of women in Australia 's paid workforce constitutes a major challenge to organisation in the workplace and to traditional attitudes about women's role in the society at large. The difficulties in the relationship between women's movement and the labour movement will be resolved only as women workers develop new forms of organisation which reach beyond the conventional confines of unionism to change fundamental social relationships. Women at Work also documents the emergence of this process during the past decade and points to directions for its further development.

Breaking Barriers
The Importance of Conflict Resolution and Effective Communication In our fast-paced, interconnected world, conflict is inevitable. Whether it's a disagreement with a co-worker, a misunderstanding with a loved one, or a clash of opinions within a community, conflict can arise in various aspects of our lives. However, how we handle these conflicts and communicate our thoughts and feelings can make all the difference in maintaining healthy relationships and achieving our goals. This chapter explores the essential concepts of conflict resolution and effective communication, aiming to equip everyone with the necessary skills to navigate conflicts and communicate better in any situation. Conflict resolution is not about avoiding or suppressing conflicts, but rather finding mutually beneficial solutions that address the underlying issues. It involves active listening, empathy, and a willingness to understand different perspectives. By acknowledging and addressing conflicts head-on, we can prevent them from escalating into more significant problems, fostering healthier relationships and positive outcomes. Effective communication plays a pivotal role in conflict resolution. It is the foundation upon which conflicts can be resolved peacefully and relationships can be strengthened. Communication is not merely about the words we use but also about non-verbal cues, active listening, and emotional intelligence. This subchapter delves into the importance of clear and concise communication, active listening, and assertiveness in expressing thoughts and feelings without aggression. Beyond conflict resolution, effective communication is a vital skill in various aspects of life. Whether in the workplace, interpersonal relationships, or even within ourselves, being able to communicate effectively can lead to better understanding, cooperation, and personal growth. This chapter provides practical strategies for improving communication skills, such as active listening exercises, conflict resolution role-plays, and tips for effective public speaking. "Simply Said: Communicating Better at Work and Beyond" is a sub-niche that emphasizes the practical application of effective communication strategies in professional and personal settings.
Concept maps and meaningful learning
Believing that the use of the concept map technique can be a factor in the acquisition of new knowledge, its meanings and the guarantee of greater stability of the knowledge previously acquired by the student, this book aims to present a reflection on the potential of the concept map as a teaching/learning strategy. The work made it possible to analyse the influence of the concept map technique as a study stimulus for students, with reference to Ausubel's meaningful learning, using bibliographical research and questionnaires as data collection procedures.
Bracero 2 0
Rising consumer demand for fresh fruits and vegetables has led to the employment of five million Mexican-born workers on North American farms during a typical year. The migration of Mexican workers within and from Mexico has implications for North American agriculture, labor, and economic development. For instance, the guest worker systems of Canada and the US allow Mexican workers to earn five times more in six months than they could earn in a year at home, fueling the construction of trophy homes in rural Mexico but not necessarily spurring economic development. The expansion of export agriculture encourages internal migration from south-to-north within Mexico, which moves migrants to areas that offer higher wages but may subject some migrants to exploitation. In Bracero 2.0, Philip Martin draws on decades of research and experience to explore the role of rural Mexicans in North American agriculture, as well as the implications for farm employers and farm workers, consumers, and the economies of North America. Martin assesses the historical and current demand for and supply of farm labor and the operation of farm labor markets in Canada, Mexico, and the US. He also uses statistical and survey data to provide the most reliable portrait of the five million people who work for wages on North American farms and explores alternatives to US farm workers in major fruits and vegetables, showing how changing consumer preferences can speed or slow mechanization. Bracero 2.0 concludes with options to improve protections for farm workers, highlighting the need for systems that ensure continuous labor law compliance--as with food safety--rather than compliance only for government or private audits.
