The Nine Headed Lion
The Buddhist monk and his three disciples finally approach the western border of China. They find themselves in a kingdom where it hasn't rained for three years because the prefect has angered the King of Heaven. Sun Wukong brings rain and, of course, trouble. Continuing their journey, they meet a prince and his three sons. The sons want to learn how to use the disciples' magic weapons, but one night the magic weapons are stolen by a nearby lion demon. When the disciples go to retrieve them, they encounter an entire family of lion demons, including a nine-headed lion with vast powers. This is the 29th book in the best-selling The Journey to the West series of stories for students learning to read Simplified Chinese. It is based on the epic 16th century novel of the same name by Wu Chen'en. That novel was inspired by an actual journey by the Buddhist monk Tangseng, who traveled from Chang'an westward to India in 629 A.D. and returned seventeen years later with priceless knowledge and spiritual texts. Over the course of the book the four travelers face the 81 tribulations that Tangseng had to endure to attain Buddhahood.Books 1 through 29 in the Journey to the West series have used a total of about 2,000 different Chinese words, but only 919 words are used in this book. We introduce 23 new words for the first time in this book, and each one is defined on the page where it is first used. The book includes pinyin, an English translation, and a full glossary. Japanese for Busy People Kana Workbook
4th Revised Edition of JAPANESE FOR BUSY PEOPLE, the most popular Japanese language textbook series in the world. Since it was first published in 1984, the focus of the Japanese for Busy People series has always been to teach Japanese for effective communication. The Kana Workbook teaches the two basic Japanese scripts, hiragana and katakana, which are essential for any student wishing to read Japanese. It teaches not only reading and writing of kana (as these scripts are collectively called), but also listening and pronunciation with the aid of audio recordings which can be downloaded for free from kodansha.us. Sections for practicing individual kana come with reference lines to help learners get a feel for the proper size and shape of each character. It also shows the stroke order, correct angles, and spaces between strokes, so that learners can master even confusingly similar-looking characters. There are also many illustrations which help learners to build their vocabularies.

Introduction to Thai Reading
In order to master the Thai language, one must become adept at reading Thai. Students who rely on books with phonetic transliterations of Thai will make limited progress. In addition, some sounds in Thai have no direct equivalent in the Roman alphabet, so even the best transliterations cannot capture all the nuances of the language. Learning to read Thai is the path to a more profound grasp of the language. This book is based on years of experience teaching foreigners to speak and read Thai, and builds on the author's observations in the classroom about which rules of grammar, spelling and pronunciation most commonly impede their progress. Introduction to Thai Reading, designed to be a comprehensive foundation of 24 progressive lessons, will pave the way towards a solid and advanced knowledge of the Thai language. Those who complete the book will have acquired not only essential Thai reading skills, but also the vocabulary and grammar needed for basic Thai speaking. Vietnam
Travel recommendations get repeated over and over for just a dozen places in Vietnam. These are amazing places, but... Do you wonder what lies beyond them? Do they represent a little or a lot of Vietnam's diversity? What are those popular locations really like? Are the brochures honest? Were they written in New York, Sydney or Hong Kong? Vietnam is my second home, and my book relates what I know. It's based on my travel. Learned from listening to local people about their lives, the area, their beliefs and their history: in 60 of Vietnam's 63 provinces, cycling and walking about 8,000 km, on a motorbike and in buses for almost 12,000 km, crisscrossing the nation as happy as a dog with two tails. It's my pleasure to give you my travel advice and insights to the land where Heaven touches Earth. This is your 'Goldilocks' guide: it fits in your pocket or bag, and has the right amount of easy-to-read information and the right type of information. No sponsored content, no endless lists of places paying to be recommended, no bizarre opinions. And definitely not written to a standard formula by a journalist in New York. You get everything to get you there and for getting around. Lots of explanations of what you can see and do across the regions and cities. There's culture, history and photos too, and some surprises. Books are expensive, but a good guidebook like this can save you time and money. It might save you from wasting a day in a C-grade attraction, or staying in the wrong city. Thank you for considering my guide and please enjoy your time in Vietnam.

Korean Conversations Book 2
This is Book 2 of Korean ConversationsThis book is for any level of Korean language learner who can read and pronounce Hangul. This is not a textbook in the usual sense. It is really more of a practice and example book. There are no "lessons" lain out for you. These are practice conversations for you to get exposure to the way normal, comfortable conversations occur, and while there are of course a number of ways to translate or say the same thing in any language, the examples chosen are done so in a way to narrow down those choices. Each conversation is intended to be both practical and interesting to help you to more easily remember the vocabulary. You will also see several short phrases that are repeated throughout various conversations. This will also help you through repetition to learn those phrases more easily by seeing them in context. Each conversation is between two people who presumably know each other fairly well. This is important to keep in mind for context and for the levels of politeness either used or implied. You will not find a lot of notes or explanations for several reasons. The main reasons being that by looking at the conversations and the translations you should be able to figure out on your own which parts go together, and the more of this connecting and figuring out you do on your own the easier it will be for you both to acquire the language and to remember it.This also allows you to work at this at many different levels and at the levels that suit or interest you. For example, you might see some parts as simply being useful vocabulary or expressions, while someone else might notice that the sentence structure can be used for other instances by doing simple replacing of either the noun or the verb stem. You might also find that going over the conversations and memorizing them is great for you when you are a beginner, but as you progress, revisiting the conversations and digging deeper into the sentence structures can help you to expand your ability to communicate even more. From the AuthorThis book is the followup from a much earlier book on learning hangul. We felt there are not enough resources for students of Korean language to supplement their course materials or to just add vocabulary and phrases without digging them out of large, difficult, and cumbersome textbooks. What do you need to get started with this book? You need to understand basic grammar and word order for Korean and have the ability to read the Korean alphabet. That's it. If you can read hangul, it shouldn't take you long to figure out the rest. This book is a practice alone or with a partner resource for learning Korean conversation in a fun, fast manner. It isn't lessons, and it isn't grammar. It is a collection of conversations written in a style that facilitates being translated as directly as possible so the student can more easily discern what parts of the English sentences are the corresponding words and phrases in the Korean sentences. That isn't to say it's the only way any of these sentences might be translated. It is just that the presented conversations represent as closely as possible the literal meanings and translations or the best "what would a Korean speaker use here" phrases.Figuring these things out on your own will help you to grasp the vocabulary much, much quicker than if the explanations are there in front of you and giving you the false sense that you understand and have it down.

Lao is the native language of the southeast Asian country of Laos, and is also spoken by much of the inhabitants of northeastern Thailand, an area known as Isaan. Using a combination of relevant descriptions, language learning tricks, flash cards, drills and comparison tracks on downloadable MP3 audio files, you will be able to conquer some of the most difficult aspects of the language. Language, Ideology and Sociopolitical Change in the Arabic-Speaking World
This book offers a critical interpretation of how the meta-linguistic LPLP discourse of major Arabic language academies from the turn of the twentieth century until the present day continuously 'burden' language with extra-linguistic, sociopolitical meanings, making it a proxy for the protracted courses of national identity negotiation, counter-peripheralisation in the modern world-system and modernisation. Integrating theories of language symbolism, language indexicality, LPLP, habitus, banal nationalism, world-system and perspectives of Critical Discourse Analysis, the book develops our understanding of the phenomenon and mechanism of the entanglement between language, ideology and sociopolitical change in the Arabic-speaking world and beyond.

The Historical Phonology of Tibetan, Burmese, and Chinese
The discovery of sound laws by comparing attested languages is the method which has unlocked the history of European languages stretching back thousands of years before the appearance of written records, e.g. Latin p- corresponds to English f- (pes, foot; primus, first; plenus, full). Although Burmese, Chinese, and Tibetan have long been regarded as related, the systematic exploration of their shared history has never before been attempted. Tracing the history of these three languages using just such sound laws, this book sheds light on the prehistoric language from which they descend. Written for readers with little linguistic knowledge of these languages, but fully explicit and copiously indexed for the specialist, this work will serve as the bedrock for future progress in the study of these languages.

Reconstructing Proto-Afroasiatic (Proto-Afrasian)
This work provides the first truly comprehensive and systematic reconstruction of proto-Afroasiatic (proto-Afrasian). It rigorously applies, throughout, the established canon and techniques of the historical-comparative method. It also fully incorporates the most up-to-date evidence from the distinctive African branches of the family, Cushitic, Chadic, and Omotic. Using concrete and specific evidence and argument, the author proposes full vowel and consonant reconstructions and a provisional reckoning of tone. Each aspect of these reconstructions is substantiated in detail in an extensive etymological vocabulary of more than 1000 roots. The results, while confirming some previous views on proto-Afroasiatic (proto-Afrasian), revise or overturn many others, and add much that is new.
Japanese for Busy People Book 1: Kana
4th Revised Edition of JAPANESE FOR BUSY PEOPLE, the most popular Japanese language textbook series in the world. Since it was first published in 1984, the focus of the Japanese for Busy People series has always been to teach Japanese for effective communication. As suggested in the title, this is a concise course for busy students who want to learn natural, spoken Japanese as efficiently as possible in a limited amount of time. The new Japanese for Busy People: Revised 4th Edition is made up of three volumes: Book I, Book II, and Book III. Book I is available in both romanized and kana versions, similar to the Revised 3rd Edition. The Kana Version is exactly the same as the Romanized Version except for the scripts used throughout the book: hiragana and katakana. The Kana Version is therefore recommended for those who have already learned kana (as these scripts are collectively called) or are learning them with Japanese for Busy People Kana Workbook or another such text. Studying Japanese in kana, rather than in romanized script, can lead to fluent pronunciation and facilitate a smooth transition to the study of kanji.
