African Languages and Literatures in the 21st Century
This edited book examines the crucial role still played by African languages in pedagogy and literatures in the 21st century, generating insights into how they effectively serve cultural needs across the African continent and beyond. Boldly positioning African languages as key resources in the 21st century, chapters focus on themes such as language revolt by marginalized groups at grassroots level, the experience of American students learning African languages, female empowerment through the use of African languages in music, film and literary works, and immigration issues. The contributions are written by scholars of language, literature, education and linguistics, and the book will be of interest to students and scholars in these and related areas.
Linguistic Ideologies, Sociolinguistic Myths and Discourse Strategies in Africa
The third of four volumes of selected papers by Zimbabwean linguist Sinfree Makoni on colonial linguistics, language teaching, language planning, language policy, language in education, multilingualism and urban vernaculars in Africa. The sixteen papers collected in this volume have a triple focus: linguistic ideologies, the social-linguistic myths upon which they are based, and real-world social-linguistic practices, attention to which reveals the misfit between myth, ideology and reality. The author argues that even those whose intentions are specifically to overturn colonial ideologies are often reinforcing and solidifying those linguistic myths upon which colonial ideologies were/are based. Includes papers written in collaboration with Ashraf Abdelhay, Arnetha F. Ball, Janina Brutt-Griffler, Marika K. Criss, Busi Makoni, Ulrike Meinhof, Alastair Pennycook, Aaron Rosenberg, Cristine Severo, Geneva Smitherman and Arthur K. Spears.
The Mungaka Alphabet Workbook
This workbook synthesizes materials we have developed since the initiation of an online course on elementary Mungaka. It is intended to provide users with a deeper understanding of the new Mungaka alphabet, its sounds and other basic writing conventions. Although it is prepared with a Mungaka 101 learner in mind, the book could be useful for individuals who have never taken a course in the new alphabet. We have therefore aimed to provide the reader with a broad but elementary material that will enable them to master the essentials of the Mungaka alphabet and how to use them in everyday written and spoken contexts.

După cum reiese din poezia de la 簾nceputul cărții, cele trei fete i-au cerut lui Dodgson o poveste iar, acesta, cu reticență, a 簾nceput să le spună prima versiune a poveștii de față. Dodgson began the story on 4 July 1862, when he took a journey in a rowing boat on the river Isis in Oxford together with the Reverend Robinson Duckworth, with Alice Liddell (ten years of age) the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, and with her two sisters, Lorina (thirteen years of age), and Edith (eight years of age). As is clear from the poem at the beginning of the book, the three girls asked Dodgson for a story and reluctantly at first he began to tell the first version of the story to them. There are many half-hidden references made to the five of them throughout the text of the book itself, which was published finally in 1865. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was first translated into Romanian in the 1940s. Since then, more than twenty translations have been published, apart from various retellings and abridgements. The present one aims to contribute to the Romanian array of translations with a more modern and up-to-date version, keeping up with the current audience.

Linear A & The Decipherment of Minoan Language
The language of the Minoan people has remained an enigma for more than a century since their ancient civilization was discovered. The script that records it, known as Linear A, has long been thought to use the same sounds and symbols as its successor-Linear B. After Linear B was deciphered in 1952 by Michael Ventris, and was found to represent an archaic form of Greek, the language of the earlier Linear A script continued to defy all those attempting to read it. A recent insight regarding synonym-parallels in ancient Minoan texts has now illuminated their meaning for the first time. This book guides the reader through the Linear A decipherment process and provides English translations for many of the most important Minoan artifacts. So enter the labyrinth as Europe's first great civilization is finally given voice after three and a half thousand years, and discover how its people have actually been speaking to us all along.

The Dinka’s Grammar
There is no culture without a language that sustains it. A culture without a language is like fish out of water. In oral societies, it is very easy for a language to extinct. There are many examples in the world today, of languages that have died out completely. Other languages are on the way to extinction. They are only spoken by older generations. The Dinka (Ji禱禱ŋ) language in distance countries such as Australia, America, Europe and others is an example of those languages on the way out to extinction. The Dinka children born and raised in those countries are at greater risk of losing the Dinka's language and culture. In some years to come, there will be people who will theoretically identify themselves as Dinka but do not speak the Dinka language.Any language is referred to as "mother's tongue" because children learn the language from home. If you do not speak to children in your own language, how do you expect them to know the language? If you do not have time to teach your children your language, how do you expect them to know? If your children speak less than 50% of your language, what percentage will your grandchildren speak? This book "The Dinka's grammar", has extensively examined most grammatical aspects of the Dinka language. It is written in simple Dinka to promote self initiated learning. If you want your children to read, write and speak Dinka fluently, this book is ideal for you.

Expressions of Time in Ancient Greek
How did Ancient Greek express that an event occurred at a particular time, for a certain duration, or within a given time frame? The answer to these questions depends on a variety of conditions - the nature of the time noun, the tense and aspect of the verb, the particular historical period of Greek during which the author lived - that existing studies of the language do not take sufficiently into account. This book accordingly examines the circumstances that govern the use of the genitive, dative, and accusative of time, as well as the relevant prepositional constructions, primarily in Greek prose of the fifth century BC through the second century AD, but also in Homer. While the focus is on developments in Greek, translations of the examples, as well as a fully glossed summary chapter, make it accessible to linguists interested in the expression of time generally.
