Systems of Social Action

2025/06/28 出版

In Systems of Social Action, author Giovanni Rossi argues that everyday cooperation relies on a system of social action, where the communicative tools that a culture provides to get others to do things are organized into a coherent array of interdependent practices. These practices range from directives like "Bring me a knife!" to questions like "Can you take over for me?" to nonverbal cues like pointing to or reaching out for an object. Rossi demonstrates that the use of request practices in informal settings is not determined by sociodemographic characteristics of the individuals involved such as age or gender, nor by the structural distance or power dynamics associated with those characteristics. Instead, the crafting of everyday requests is sensitive to the dynamic, situational needs of social interaction: distinguishing between individual and shared goals, seeking assistance in the face of resistance, navigating prerequisites for object exchange, and orchestrating collective agency. Based on an extensive study of real-life interactions among speakers of Italian, Rossi shows that requesting is more than just asking: it is a nuanced form of social influence that shapes and maintains relationships. These analyses drive his intervention in broader theories of social action. The case of requesting in Italian forms the empirical basis for a deeper understanding of systems of social action practices.

Fillers

2025/06/26 出版

Fillers are non-silent linguistic devices used in disfluencies to gain time while searching for words. In addition, they are frequently used intentionally to avoid words for reasons of politeness, 'conspirational' motivations, or rhetorical purposes. Two syntactically distinct types of conventionalized fillers can be distinguished: placeholders and hesitatives (also called hesitators). Placeholders are referential and morphosyntactically integrated, while hesitatives are neither. Strikingly, even though fillers are cross-linguistically widespread, dedicated studies of such items in particular languages are still largely lacking. This collective volume comprises in-depth descriptions of conventionalized fillers in a substantial variety of languages from Eurasia, Papunesia, Australia, and the Americas, hoping to stimulate typological research on fillers, both hesitatives and placeholders. The book aims to contribute to a better visibility of the topic among general linguists, to make data and analyses accessible that will be useful for further typological studies on the topic, and to provide models for descriptive linguists. The introductory chapter discusses issues emerging from the previous literature and offers a new typology of fillers. It also highlights the major findings of the eleven remaining chapters. Each of these contains a detailed and typologically informed analysis of fillers in one or several underdescribed languages, based on corpora of natural speech and focusing on lexical fillers rather than on phenomena below the word-level (phonetic lengthening, truncation) or above the word-level (such as idioms and discourse markers like 'you know', or rhetorical questions like 'what's the word for that?'). The chapters cover a large amount of diversity, both in terms of languages and with respect to the type of filler. They focus on (i) the criteria for identification of the various types of fillers and the terminology used, keeping in mind that the domain is

Transitional Morphology

2025/06/26 出版

Combining Forms (CFs) are a major morphological phenomenon in Modern English, yet while they have been discussed in some morphological literature, no full-length study has been devoted to this topic so far. This pioneering book addresses that gap by providing a framework in which CFs are marked as distinct from their neighbouring categories such as abbreviations and blending. It splits CFs into four distinct categories - neoclassical (e.g. bio-therapy, zoo-logy), abbreviated (e.g. e-reader, econo-politics), secreted (e.g. oil-gate, computer-holic) and splinters (e.g. docu- from documentary in docudrama). It shows that the notion of CF spans a wide spectrum of processes, from regular composition to abbreviation, from blending to analogy, and schema. Modern and emerging English CFs are analysed by adopting a corpus-based approach, and measuring their realised, expanding, and potential productivity. Comprehensive yet accessible, it is essential reading for researchers and advanced students of morphology, English historical linguistics, corpus linguistics, and lexicography.
