World Englishes as Components of a Complex Dynamic System
This Element proposes to view World Englishes as components of an overarching Complex Dynamic System of Englishes, against the conventional view of regarding them as discrete, rule-governed, categorial systems. After outlining this basic idea and setting it off from mainstream linguistic theories, it introduces the theory of Complex Dynamic Systems and the main properties of such systems (systemness, complexity, perpetual dynamics, network relationships, the interplay of order and chaos, emergentism and self-organization, nonlinearity and fractals, and attractors), and surveys earlier applications to language. Usage-based linguistics and construction grammar are outlined as suitable frameworks to explain how the Complex Systems principles manifest themselves in linguistic reality. Many structural properties and examples from several World Englishes are presented to illustrate the manifestations of Complex Systems principles in specific features of World Englishes. Finally, the option of employing the NetLogo programming environment to simulate variety emergence via agent-based modeling is suggested.
Metagrammar
This book highlights the grammatical structure of thought and behavior as a blueprint for scientific discovery and innovation. It defines the new concept of metagrammar as the unnoticed transfer of linguistic functions and skills to and from our interaction with the world. Viewing grammar as language engineering, the author argues that metagrammar charts a new mode of reasoning central to critical thinking, problem solving and goal setting in all areas of human endeavor. He shows how metagrammatical structures and genres mediate in the conceptualization of phenomena, as well as in the production of plans, policies, systems and designs. This uniquely human capability is contrasted with mechanistic models in computers and AI that threaten to replace human agency and decision making. This book will be of interest to the educated reader who wants to keep abreast of transformational research in language and cognition as it applies to self and society, current events, digital media and emerging technologies, from artificial intelligence to autonomous systems, from a human-centered perspective. It will be particularly relevant to organizations such as the Modern Languages Association, for its focus on linguistic and narrative theory, cultural studies and critical theory.
Second Language Anxiety
This book traces and summarizes theoretical insights and empirical findings on the topic of whether or not anxiety for language learning could be a causal variable for individual differences in language learning. The author brings together three decades of research to show that first language (L1) skills and second language (L2) aptitude are confounding variables in studies of language anxiety and that learners' levels of anxiety for L2 learning are strongly related to their levels of language achievement. These findings have suggested that language anxiety instruments reflect students' (accurate) self-perceptions of their language skills and their levels of L1 achievement and L2 aptitude. The research presented in this book holds the potential to change the ways in which L2 educators and researchers think about language anxiety, how language anxiety is assessed, how investigations into language anxiety are conducted and how L2 teachers respond to anxiety in the classroom.
The Literary Lifeline
The Literary Lifeline is a tribute to the transporting and consoling power of reading. In this insightful and moving book, Kevin Harvey affirms the importance that language and literature can play in our lives, reminding us of reading's enduring, and sometimes surprising, ability to help us through times of illness, grief, and uncertainty. Interweaving fragments from his own experience of reading, Harvey takes us on a fascinating tour of reading for therapeutic effect, exploring the rise of shared reading and other uses of bibliotherapy in various social and personal contexts. He argues, through a series of compelling stories and life experiences, that reading not only benefits physical and emotional wellbeing, but that it also humanises the care process, particularly in institutional settings where personhood can be threatened or undermined completely. Whether he's writing about the drama and delight of reading aloud to other people, the humane magic of the public library, or the loss of his beloved brother and his improvised attempt to read through grief, Harvey offers us an engaging take on the solace of reading and the gift of the written word. Entertaining, highly accessible, and teeming with illuminating observations and ideas, The Literary Lifeline is a book that will appeal to both scholars and general readers alike.

Each chapter includes: - chapter outlines and summaries- key takeaways- practice activities- further reading suggestions. The author explains the theories of lexical meaning, introduces key concepts used in the study of meaning, and elaborates on key principles for effective analysis of semantic structure. He also explores the mechanisms of analyzing semantic structures and the techniques used to explain their interpretation. Presenting a cognitive-linguistic description of an important area in language study relating structure to cognition, this book offers a novel approach for producing and interpreting lexical items in English.
Soundings and the Politics of Sociolinguistic Listening for Transnational Space
In a world dominated by the visual, this book presents how a focus on the sounded experience and acts of listening may carve a way to reformulate emerging publics, create space for critical multilingual engagement and deepen recognition of emancipatory practices. Examining the emerging logics and rhythms among a group of post-EU accession UK Polish migrants, this book focuses on the semiotic processes through which contemporary moving bodies and communities place themselves in sociolinguistic landscapes. It considers how they develop metrics to account for sociolinguistic change and authenticate their projects and practices in transnational timespace. In doing so, the book brings power differentials to the centre of language and objectivity debates and foregrounds material semiotics as an approach that enables a new collective potential and redefinition of sociolinguistic listening. By connecting research on scale in migration contexts with studies of embodied soundwork and of stance in semiotics, this book highlights how a focus on the sounded sign may bring us closer to the ways in which bodies and meanings are (re)made, and collective doing and thinking are formed in the globalised world.
Namibian English in Its Multilingual Environment
Already much discussed within the World Englishes research paradigm, English in Namibia only began to develop into a dominant lingua franca from 1990 onwards. The study's central research questions are: How does spoken English vary in Namibia? Does it form one variety or several? And what is distinctly Namibian about it? To answer these questions, this study draws on perceptually contextualized speech data collected among young urban Namibian generations. It first identifies the historical and contemporary uses of English in Namibia in comparison with other languages. The patterns of code-switching into which Namibian English is embedded are illustrated based on a corpus of informal multilingual Namibian speech. The study then zooms in on its phonetic and grammatical features, with particular emphasis on how these features are perceived and socially distributed, and whether they represent transfers from native languages or imports from exogenous English varieties.
Community Interpreting in Cameroon
Cameroon by virtue of its colonial past, has embraced several exogenous cultures, civilizations and languages. This has no doubt left an indelible mark on the linguistic landscape of the country. From the Carthaginians, Greeks, Portuguese through the Germans to the French and English, the linguistic landscape of Cameroon could not remain the same and the impact can still be felt today. One of the most obvious consequences of these contacts is that English and French have remained vital communication mediums in the country. The introduction of these exogenous languages into an already extremely diverse linguistic repertoire entailed and still entails the use of middle men (referred to as interpreters) for effective communication. As it stands, there is no Cameroonian who can boast of being cleared of any linguistic challenges in a country where 70% of the citizens are rural and do not master the languages used in public domains. Access to public utility such as health care services is a considerable challenge which can only be overcome with the help of interpreters.
Sentence Structure
Unlock the secrets of sentence structure with "Sentence Structure: Third Edition," a comprehensive guide that delves into the intricacies of crafting powerful sentences. This book begins with the basics, breaking down the simple sentence into its core components and exploring the elegance of brevity. It then delves into compound sentences, examining the roles of coordinating conjunctions and the musicality of balanced structures. The complex sentence is unraveled, revealing the power dynamics between independent and dependent clauses, while the compound-complex sentence combines coordination and subordination to create grand structures. The declarative sentence is established as the bedrock of expository writing, and the interrogative sentence ignites intellectual exploration. The imperative sentence issues directives with clarity, and the exclamatory sentence expresses heightened emotions. Conditional sentences weave intricate webs of cause and effect, and relative clauses enrich noun phrases with additional information. The book continues by demonstrating how cleft sentences strategically emphasize specific elements, and inverted sentences create rhythm and emotional resonance. Parallel structures are unveiled for their elegance and persuasive power, while balanced sentences create a profound sense of harmony. Periodic sentences build suspense by withholding the main clause until the end, and loose sentences capture the unfiltered flow of thought. Elliptical sentences invite the reader to fill in the gaps, and appositive phrases provide additional information with elegance. Absolute phrases paint vivid scenes, and interjections capture unfiltered reactions. "Sentence Structure: Third Edition" is your ultimate guide to mastering the art of sentence construction, enhancing your writing skills, and captivating your readers.
Gender Representation and Power Relation in Professor Hanaa
This study, grounded in Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis, explores how linguistic and rhetorical strategies in Reem Bassiouny's Professor Hanaa construct the protagonist's experiences and challenge traditional gender roles in contemporary Egyptian society. It addresses a gap in the literature by examining the interplay between linguistic structures and cognitive processes in Arabic feminist fiction, focusing on how discourse shapes female subjectivity and resistance. The study hypothesizes that language in both the narrative and Hanaa's speech functions as a tool for both conforming to and resisting patriarchal norms. The findings show how the narrative constructs a gendered mental model where power is contested. From a socio-cognitive perspective, Hanaa's resistance is embedded in her evolving mental representations, while Lazar's framework demonstrates the narrative's feminist ideological stance. This study contributes to gender studies and Middle Eastern literary criticism.
Possibility and Necessity in Translation
This book attempts to clarify the concepts of possibility and necessity in translation. It tries to use most of the previous contributions in translation studies which have used different terminologies to refer to the binary nature of the translation strategy. In this book, it is argued that to select the most appropriate translation method, the translator must first determine cases of possibility and necessity. Possibility means that the translator can use a source language-oriented strategy in which he keeps the same selection of the lexical items used by the original author. Necessity means that the translator cannot use a source language-oriented strategy for different reasons, and therefore, there will be a necessity for using a target language-oriented strategy. The selection of a translation strategy is intricately tied to the concepts of possibility and necessity, which guide translators in deciding how best to convey meaning from the source language to the target language.

The Empire laughs back. Humour and Irony in the New Literatures in English
Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: This study analyzes four novels and one short story in English, all of which assign a special role to irony and humor. The purpose of this analysis is to showcase the richness of irony and examine its impact on the reader. To support this, some of the most influential works on laughter and humor are discussed, including Bergson's "Das Lachen", Freud's "Der Witz und seine Beziehung zum Unbewussten", and Bachtin's "Literatur und Karneval". These theories illustrate how irony and humor can serve as powerful tools for social critique. By engaging their audience through laughter, authors are able to deliver a more or less bitter commentary on their world-challenging taboos and clich矇s without offending the sensibilities of their communities.
