Reflections on English Word-Formation
We are all familiar with coming across a new word, whether it has just been invented or whether we have just not met it before. How do we invent new words? How do we understand words that we have never heard before? What are the limits on the kinds of words we produce? How have linguists and grammarians dealt with the phenomenon of creating new words, and how justified are their ways of viewing such words? In this concise and compelling book, Professor Bauer, one of the world's best-known morphologists, looks back over fifty years of his work, seeking out overlooked patterns in word-formation, and offering new solutions to recurrent problems. Each section deals with a different morphological problem, meaning that the book can either be read from start to finish, or alternatively used as a concise reference work on the key issues and problems in the field.
The Cultural Politics of Digital User Experience Writing
User experience (UX) writers are the professionals who create the verbal content of websites, apps, or other software interfaces, including error messages, help texts, software instructions, or button labels that we all see and engage with every day. This invisible yet highly influential language work has been largely ignored by sociocultural linguists. The book addresses this gap, examining the broader cultural politics of digital media through an exploration of the linguistic production and purposeful design of interface texts. It discusses UX writing as an influential contemporary domain of language work and shows how the specific practices and processes that structure this work shape the norms that become embedded in software interfaces. It highlights the nature of UX writing, its (meta)pragmatic organization, and its cultural-political implications. Foregrounding the voices and perspectives of language workers, it is essential reading for anyone interested in how language shapes the way people use digital media.
Convergence and Divergence in the Eastern Circum-Baltic Area
The volume summarizes research on the structural convergence and divergence of languages in the eastern part of the Circum-Baltic Area by providing its profile against a genealogical and typological background. Methodological issues needed to assess factors that condition convergence in contact superposition zones, or that otherwise lead to differentiation among related varieties, are discussed. Against this backdrop synthetic surveys of major and minor Finnic languages are provided, followed by corpus-based case studies on morphosyntactic phenomena. The volume thus presents both a synthetic compendium and a series of specific up-to-date studies, with special attention to micro-variation.

"The Ebb and Pull of the Dream". An Ecocritical Reading of Cherie Dimaline's "The Marrow Thieves"
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: This work explores how Indigenous literature, particularly "The Marrow Thieves" by M矇tis author Cherie Dimaline, responds to environmental destruction and climate change. Set in a dystopian near-future Canada devastated by ecological collapse, the novel follows a group of Indigenous characters fleeing from settlers who harvest their bone marrow, believed to be the cure for a mysterious illness that prevents non-Indigenous people from dreaming. The novel critiques ongoing colonial violence and its connection to environmental exploitation, highlighting how Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by both. Through its characters and story, "The Marrow Thieves" shows the resilience of Indigenous peoples and the importance of traditional knowledge in surviving ecological crises. It challenges dominant ideas of development and progress, instead emphasizing the deep, interdependent relationship between humans and the natural world. This analysis uses eco-criticism and postcolonial theory to explore how Dimaline's novel exposes the roots of environmental collapse in colonial history and calls for a rethinking of our relationship with the environment, one guided by Indigenous perspectives and values.

Why We Talk Funny
A fun, smart and surprising dive into the past, present and future of accents - and the enduring power of sounding different Accents have long held our fascination. As far back as the 7th century BCE, Egyptian pharaohs experimented with babies to test out theories about the "original" accent and the Old Testament relays how a small difference in the pronunciation of "s" became a fatal litmus test of tribal belonging. Still today, from dinner parties to job interviews, you'll find people kicking up dust about things like where and how to pronounce a 't, ' as in, never in "often," but with proper British poshness, as in "t(y)une." In Why We Talk Funny, linguist Valerie Fridland unlocks the secrets of what linguistic science, psychology and history can tell us about the evolution of human speech, why accents develop, and how they shape our professional and social lives. With a healthy dose of her signature humor and captivating anecdotes, Fridland explores how the twin forces of physiology and psychology along with the need to fit in changes the trajectory of speech over languages and lifetimes, diving deep into the history and social forces driving the way people talk. Along the way, she emphasizes that accents don't always set us apart, they can also bring us together. Whether it's the accent that hints at your hometown, your group, your social status or your ethnicity, the sounds we say reveal a lot about who we are and where we've been - even for those who might think they have no accent at all. The story of language is the story of humanity, and as Fridland reminds us, the funny sounds we make - whether from the mouths of ancient ancestors or the tongues of screenbound teens - all come from the same powerful desire to communicate and belong. Why We Talk Funny will change the way you think about your own accent - and transform the way you listen to the sounds of others.

Variation in non-verbal negation in Ammani Arabic
The work makes available evidence that the alternation between [mu] and [muʃ] forms in Ammani Arabic grammar is socially conditioned. The most significant social factor is found to be gender (with a range value of 0.66). In this work, the variant [mu] is assumed to be a sign of femininity; therefore, it is more preferred by females than males. Age is found to be the second significant social factor (with a range value of 0.43). This can come down to the assumption that young speakers do prefer less complex forms, hence the use of [mu] over [muʃ]. Education is also found to be significant (with a range value of 0.26). According to Al Wer (2013), education widens the individual's social networks and mobility, so he/she becomes aware of the most prestigious forms used in his/her community. Finally, region is also found to be significant (with a range value of 0.17). West Amman speakers prefer [muʃ] in contrast to East Amman, who prefer [mu].
Effective Language Learning Through Task-Based Strategies
This book explores the integration of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) as a dynamic and learner-centered approach to enhance English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. It provides in-depth insights into how task-based strategies can be effectively applied to develop core language skills-reading, writing, listening, and speaking-while also strengthening grammar and vocabulary acquisition. The guide outlines practical methods, including group and individual work, digital tools, peer feedback, and innovative assessment techniques. Designed for language educators, this resource offers real classroom examples, best practices, and implementation strategies adaptable to various educational settings. It emphasizes the use of technology, formative and summative feedback, and learner autonomy to maximize student engagement and learning outcomes. With a strong theoretical foundation and a focus on practical application, the book equips teachers with the tools needed to foster communicative competence and critical thinking through meaningful tasks in modern EFL classrooms.
Introduction to Linguistics
This language is the subject matter of linguistics. The first step in scientifically discussing this language is to collect data about it and record it. Data are collected from spoken and written languages as needed, although modern linguistics tends to favor spoken language.A trained linguist can collect information about spoken language by listening to it and using memory; in most cases, that information is recorded using a special type of International Phonetic Alphabet created according to linguistic methods, and it is very easy to record on tape. Written records in that language-such as ancient manuscripts, inscriptions, old books, and statues-are used to discuss ancient languages. Information about different aspects of language, such as sound patterns and pronunciation processes, is collected with the help of devices like the kymograph, artificial palate, and X-ray photography. In this way, in the second phase of linguistics, information on various aspects of the language is collected, given a proper description, and analyzed.
Action and Reaction
A wide-ranging, interdisciplinary conceptual history of the changing meanings and metaphors of "action" and "reaction" What is meant by reactionary politics? What do biologists mean when they speak of the interaction between life and its surroundings? Why was the term "abreaction" invented and later abandoned by the first generation of psychoanalysts? These are but a few of the questions the internationally renowned scholar Jean Starobinski answers in his latest work on the conceptual history of the words "action" and "reaction." Not just a history of ideas, Action and Reaction is also a semantic and philological history, a literary history, a history of medicine, and a history of the biological sciences. Concentrating especially on the moment when scientific language and ordinary language diverge, the author offers a genealogy of the human and natural sciences through their usage of the metaphors action and reaction. Newton's theorem "to every action an equal action is always opposed," stands as a point of departure for Starobinski's exploration of the lexical and metaphorical traces this proposition left in its wake. With stunning clarity, the author analyzes the scientific, literary, and political effects of the terms action / reaction in describing and explaining the material universe, the living body, the events of history, and psychological behavior. Ultimately, the book explores the power and danger of metaphorical language and questions the convergence and collapse of scientific and moral explanations of the universe.
The Archaic Thesaurus
The word "thesaurus" comes from the Greek word thēsauros, which means "treasure, treasury, or storehouse". The first thesaurus was published in 1852 by British doctor and mathematician Dr. Peter Mark Roget.
The Deorhord
An entertaining tour of Old English words for animals, from the author of The Wordhord: Daily Life in Old English Many of the animals we encounter in everyday life, from pets and farm animals to the wild creatures of field and forest, have remained the same since medieval times. But the words used to name and describe them have often changed beyond recognition, starting with the Old English word for "animal" itself, deor (pronounced DAY-or). In The Deorhord, Hana Videen presents a glittering Old English bestiary of animals real and imaginary, big and small, ordinary and extraordinary--the good, the bad, and the downright baffling. From gange-w疆fran or walker-weavers (spiders) and hasu-padan or grey-cloaked ones (eagles) to heafdu swelce mona or moon-heads (historians still don't know!), The Deorhord introduces a world both familiar and strange: where ants could be monsters and panthers could be your friends, where dog-headed men were as real as elephants, and where whales were as sneaky as wolves. The curious stories behind these words provide vivid insights into the language, literature, and lives of those who spoke Old English--the language of Beowulf--more than a thousand years ago. A delightful journey through the weird and wonderful world of Old English, The Deorhord is a magical menagerie of new creatures and new words for the modern englisc reader to discover.

Military Leader and Effective Rhetorical Skills
This research focuses on how military leaders can improve leadership thru effective rhetorical skills. The research provides a greater understanding of the importance of rhetoric and provides military leaders with methods to implement rhetorical skills and strategies to improve leadership qualities. Through extensive review of both military and civilian literature on rhetoric and leadership, the author addresses the importance of why military leaders should develop effective rhetorical skills and what constitutes effective rhetorical skills. The Adapted HPT Model for Reaching Desired Rhetorical Skills provides the foundation to understand the gap between the actual and desired rhetorical skills, the causes of the gap, and solutions to reduce the gap. The Military Rhetorical Skills Model allows a methodical application of the desired rhetorical skills to demonstrate how General MacArthur effectively used rhetorical skills and created rhetorical eloquence in his farewell address at West Point in 1962. Military leaders, charged with responsibility to lead others in demanding situations and to defend the ideals of our Constitution, require a wide range of skills to protect the promises made by donning the military uniform. Developing effective rhetorical skills is an important element of achieving excellence in practicing the art and science of military leadership. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
