Native-Speakerism and Trans-Speakerism
Native-speakerism is a deeply embedded prejudice that perpetuates unequal power dynamics in language education. By introducing the liberating concept of trans-speakerism, this innovative book dismantles prevalent biases and reshapes the discourse in the field. It proposes inclusive designations such as global speaker of English (GSE), global teacher of English (GTE), and global Englishes researcher (GER), and urges a shift away from labels that maintain marginalization. By systematically reviewing previous studies, it challenges native-speakerism, and seeks to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion for all language speakers, teachers and researchers - transcending the limitations imposed by speakerhood statuses. The volume features the voices of non-native English-speaking (NNES) secondary school teachers, graduate students, and university professors in Japan, highlighting the strengths, interests, and uniqueness of language practitioners and researchers - both intellectually and emotionally. It ultimately encourages all language educators, researchers, and policymakers to oppose biases, welcome linguistic diversity, and develop inclusive language education environments.
Prose and Poetry Through Time
This is the first major study of the Biblical Hebrew verbal system of a prophetic book. It is also the first book-length study in over 60 years to focus on how genre affects the Hebrew verbal system. It advances a data-driven argument that Biblical Hebrew verb forms do not function one way in prose and another way in poetry. Lastly, the author addresses the diachronic development of Hebrew between the destruction of the First Temple and the writing of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Trajectories of Translation
This book builds on Marais's innovative A (Bio)Semiotic Theory of Translation to explore the implications of this conceptualization of translation as the semiotic work from which social-cultural reality emerges and chart the way forward for applications in empirical research. The volume brings together some of the latest developments in biosemiotics, social semiotics and Peircean semiotics with emergent work in translation studies towards better understanding the emergence of trajectories in society-culture through semiotic processes. The book further develops lines of thinking around thermodynamics in the work of Terrence Deacon to consider the ways in which ideas emerge from matter, creating meaning, and its opposites, namely the ways in which ideas constrain matter. Marais links these theoretical strands to empirical case studies in the final three chapters towards operationalizing these concepts for further empirical work. This book is aimed at academics in the fields of translation studies, semiotics, multimodal/multimedial studies, cultural studies and development studies. It will also be applicable to postgraduate students in these fields.
Speech Acts
This Element outlines issues in the study of speech acts. Discursive approaches shift the focus to interaction and interactional sequences. The (In)Coherence of Divine Mercy
How do texts of Scripture make sense or hold together as a unity? This question is especially germane to the Masoretic Text of Hosea, which is often seen as an unintegrated composition by some, or an artful literary whole by others. Such judgments often come without clear definitions and criteria for (in)coherence. This book brings descriptive clarity to this issue through a discourse analysis of cohesion and coherence in Hosea 12-14 based on Systemic Functional Linguistics. This study showcases the theme of divine mercy in Hosea 12-14 and gives readers tools for discourse-linguistic analysis of the Hebrew Bible.

The issue of linguistic standardization of signs in actor-translators
In this paper, we discuss the means for linguistic standardization in the Virtual Teaching and Learning Environment (VLEA) of the Letras - LIBRAS course, which presents such linguistic variation in the use of signs by deaf actor-translators that, at times, the students of the course felt confused. To carry out this investigation, we started from the problem of variation in translation practice, identifying the difficulties and, aware of them, indicating alternative paths. As a working methodology, the actor-translators were interviewed about their doubts, suggestions and difficulties in dealing with variations in the translation of signs for a virtual course and, subsequently, there were informal conversations with students on the course about the results of the proposed changes to the translation process and linguistic standardization. As a practical result of the discussions proposed in this work, we came up with a technical glossary that enables the linguistic standardization project in the translations carried out in the course.

Vasarely's vocabulary
The history of art knows relatively few painters who, in addition to practicing their craft of executing drawings, paintings and frescoes, were also concerned to talk, and above all write, about their works, their technique, themselves and their contemporaries, or, in general, their "philosophy of art". Among the most illustrious are Leonardo da Vinci and Delacroix, but there are also a few "moderns", such as Maurice Denis and Paul Signac. Vasarely, too, was one of those artists who had a lifelong "desire to write". His preoccupation with language, not to say lexicography, accompanied his artistic activities from the moment he arrived in Paris in 1930. As an iconoclast, he changed the semantic understanding of words as "banal" as cr矇er, cr矇ateur or cr矇ation, not to mention expressions such as alphabet plastique, cit矇 polychrome, folklore plan矇taire or unit矇 plastique. These - despite comprising words that, separately, have nothing new in terms of their signifiers - will be filled in his usage with meanings never seen before.
An Anthology of Bilingual Child Phonology
This edited book is a collection of studies on protolanguage phonology, referring to the development of children's autonomous linguistic systems from their first meaningful forms to complete cognitive and articulatory acquisition of language. The volume comprises chapters on child bilingual phonological development, understood as the acquisition or use of more than one linguistic code, whether actual languages, dialects, or communication modes, in an array of contexts. Such contexts include endogenous and exogenous bilingualism, heritage language, bilectalism, trilingualism, and typical and atypical use. The contributed works here will be of interest to researchers and postgraduate students investigating language acquisition in bi-/multilingual settings, as well as those working on child phonological development across a variety of languages.
Contemporary Nigerian Novels
This book evaluates selected contemporary Nigerian novels as literary reflection of the contesting orientations and interests. In doing this, the selected writers expose an incident of synergy of political and religious structures in the perpetuation of oppression, exploitation and antagonism. This situation is therefore a signification of relationship between contesting vested interests of the secular and religious elites and the power, socio-economic and cultural aspects of the Nigerian social formation. The findings reveal that spiritual enterprise and manipulation of religion are driven by vested socio-economic interests of political and religious elites. The findings also reveal that hegemony is causal factor of widespread poverty, power antagonism, social fragmentation, class conflicts as well as manipulation if religion. The study has found that contemporary Nigerian novels are such modernist texts which are not defined by linear plot in the sense that the stories of the selected novels are narrated in disjointed manner in order to depict social fragmentations in Nigeria.
Review of Literature based on Research of Diamond Industries
The diamond industry in Gujarat is an important foreign exchange earning industry. So far, various researchers from various universities in Gujarat have done their M.Phil. or Ph.D. research work on Gujarat's diamond industry, diamond workers, and human resources in the diamond industry. But a few research works had been done on diamond brokers. The first research work on diamond brokers in Gujarat was done by Sutariya Rutulkumar, with titled "A Statistical Study of Economic Condition of Diamond Brokers in Surat City" M.Phil. Dissertation, from V.N.S.G.Uni. in 2012. The researcher is currently conducting a comparative study of the economic and social situation of diamond brokers in Surat and Ahmedabad. This research on diamond brokers is scarce in various research study articles on the diamond industry available in Gujarat and India. There are a few data and literature are available on diamond brokers of Gujarat. so, this research study has studied the research literature on its related works such as the diamond industry and diamond workers due to the lack of literature on diamond brokers.
Grammatical Categories in Linguistics and Education
This volume explores how grammatical categories, as defined by theoretical linguistics, are effectively implemented in language education. Aiming to bridge the gap between linguistic research and language pedagogy, it offers a detailed inquiry that spans theoretical frameworks and empirical data. By presenting a series of insightful studies, this work illustrates how findings from theoretical linguistics can be applied to enhance practical language instruction, demonstrating the reciprocal enrichment of both fields. Essential for linguists, language educators, and researchers interested in the intersections of grammar, cognition, and pedagogy, the volume is organized into four engaging sections. Each section illuminates the nuances of grammar teaching and language acquisition. It begins with a theoretical analysis of linguistic categories across diverse languages, progresses through the links between linguistic research and teaching methodologies, and delves into the role of empirical data in classroom applications. The final section focuses on the practical implementation of linguistic categories in language teaching, promoting a deeper understanding of grammar as a dynamic component of language learning.
Beyond Language
This ethnographic work examines both the colonial language governmentality imposed by the Turkish state and the Kurdish language activism as a response to this system. Through a genealogical study, it calls for a reconsideration of the linguistic condition in Turkey as being more than nationalist, highlighting its foundation in intertwined ideologies of racism, imperialism, and colonialism. It then provides an analysis of new possibilities and directions led by the actors of the Kurdish language movement, which seeks to enhance not only the linguistic but also the socio-political condition of the Kurdish people by taking a "beyond language" approach. The work advances our thinking about language oppression and minority language activism.

The Use of Linguocultural Units in Uzbek Literature
In world linguistics, the issue of describing the specific tasks of the language, in particular, the language of artistic works and the language level units related to it, which is considered national development, has been gaining importance since the second half of the last century. In recent years, the improvement of research in the direction of linguo-cultural studies in Uzbek linguistics has brought about the issue of comprehensive research of the language of artistic works.
Linguistic Corpora and Big Data in Spanish and Portuguese
In recent decades, corpus linguistics has experienced tremendous development in the Hispanic world, along two opposite but complementary approaches: increase in corpus size (corpus linguistics as Big Data) and improvement in document selection and data annotation (corpus linguistics as High Quality Data). The first approach has led to the creation of massive corpora such as EsTenTen; at the same time, it has promoted the use of the web and social networks as corpora. The second perspective gives rise to specialized corpora such as Post Scriptum or Oralia Diacr籀nica del espa簽ol (ODE). The contributions gathered in this volume combine both methods in order to exploit their advantages and to overcome their possible limitations. On the one hand, it addresses the creation and design of small corpora focused on data quality; on the other hand, it offers case studies that make use of both specialized corpora and massive data extracted from the web. Highlighting the complementary nature of both methods is the main idea of this book.
Linguistic Counter-Standardization
Language standardization is problematic because it imposes the dominant group's linguistic variety as the only correct one and promotes the idea of unit thinking, i.e., seeing the world as consisting of bounded, internally homogeneous units. This volume examines intentional practices to subvert such processes of language standardization (what we call counter-standardization practices) in language education and other contexts. By suggesting alternative classroom pedagogies, language reclamation processes for indigenous populations, and discourses about (mis)pronunciation, this volume explores more liberatory approaches: the post-unit thinking of language.
Mutual Intelligibility Between Closely Related Languages
This book provides a detailed overview of research on mutual intelligibility between closely related languages. The book is organized around three sections which explore different facets of mutual intelligibility research. The first section outlines how to measure levels of intelligibility and its linguistic and extra-linguistic determinants. The second part grapples with questions and issues which arise once the measuring tools are established. A final section reflects on the practical and theoretical value of studying mutual intelligibility, including issues related to language planning and policy, such as cultural, communicative, educational, and economical matters.
Breaking Gender Barriers
This study explores Bapsi Sidhwa's The Pakistani Bride (1990) and Ice-Candy Man (1998) through Judith Butler's perspective of gender performativity. Bapsi Sidhwa, an award-winning Anglophone Pakistani novelist, is considered a pioneer of the English novel in Pakistan. The dissertation argues that Sidhwa's works resist gender stereotyping and cultural norms related to binary sexuality. Pakistani Bride and Ice-Candy Man challenge socio-cultural gender constructs by depicting characters whose gender identities are shaped by their varied performances rather than their sexual categorization. These characters exhibit multiple shades of gender identities through their actions, suggesting that gender is a fluid and indeterminate entity, unrelated to biological sex.Furthermore, the study contends that i gender is not something we are born with, and not something we have, but something we do - something we perform (Butler, 1990). The socio-cultural taken-for-granted gender construction causes an unequal representation of it in all walks of life that is disrupted through the performativity of various characters.
The written discourse and smart cartoon picture
This book is an explanation about the effect of task complexity on Iranian EFL learners' grammatical accuracy in written discourse through a study that was investigated by using a cartoon picture, and 60 intermediate learners that were selected from among learners in Kish institute in Sari - Iran.In this book first of all we survey the relation of writing and task based language teaching therefore we describe subjects about writing, tasks, task approaches, and task complexity.Language and writing or two distinct system of signs, the second exists for the sole purpose of representing the first the linguistic object is not both written and spoken form of words, the spoken forms alone constitute the objects. (sausure 1959: 23)
Maasai Songs, Riddles and Narratives
Songs and poetry are an essential part of life in many communities. In societies where traditional customs are strongly adhered to, there are certain rituals that are observed to the accompaniment of songs, dirges and other poetic forms. Apart from thee ritual tunes, there are also songs that are composed spontaneously as the occasion demands. These include lullabies, love songs, war songs and political songs. But whatever function they serve, songs and poetry embody a people's philosophy, beliefs, values and, sometimes, their historical development.
About inclusive language in French and English
Inclusive language is a non-discriminatory form of expression regardless of sexual or gender identity, avoiding gender stereotypes. It is a powerful means of promoting gender equality (United Nations). It alludes to the generic value of the masculine that designates all human beings, and by this very fact, it does not allow visualizing the feminine. We have focused on the emergence of inclusive language in different linguistic communities, its development in different fields, the analysis of the linguistic tools used and their controversies, and the different contexts of its use within the same community. The present book has as its starting point two research works on inclusive language, carried out as teachers of foreign languages at the Bachillerato de Bellas Artes, Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Our recognition to the institution and to our colleagues.
Writing for Inclusion
Writing for Inclusion (WIN) wishes to develop high quality and care systems in childhood education. The priority has been to sensitize very young learners towards care and inclusion. The book shows the learning modules to train teachers to tackle care in education within their classrooms. It also provides students with materials both visual and written to create texts both orally and in writing to advocate for inclusion through stories. As for digital competence, the book explores the possibilities of new technologies to engage in active citizenship. Inclusion practices to create inclusive environments, such as the integration of children with a disability or an awareness campaign for minority students are valuable because they stem from the concept of "Care", fostering empathy in 4th-year primary education students. This book is about building and implementing a methodology that interprets those special needs in four European schools and acts upon them through digital storytelling.
