The Word and the Lingust
In the world of the WORD OF GOD AND THE LINGUIST, the Audio Bible, language, linguistics and linguist play a vital role in solving societal challenges. The Audio Bible increases accessibility and comprehension of the Word of God, while linguists ensure that language is clear, inclusive, and culturally sensitive. Again, the transformative potential of language and linguistics hold vast promise for addressing any societal challenges. Moreover, through the use of the Holy Bible in indigenous languages, one can shape culture, bridge divides, and foster understanding. That is to say, by leveraging language and linguistics, we can develop innovative solutions for education, communication, and social cohesion and individual fulfilment in the nations of the world. The Audio Bible, for instance is a valuable tool in Nigeria's religious and social landscape. The Representation of Human Agony in Selected Contemporary in-Yer-Face
Contemporary life is the life of various complexities which are the products of extraordinary changes that accompanied human existence in this world during the Twenty-First century. Undisputedly, spread of aggression, violence, cruelty, brutality, and hostility have all been responsible for creating new agonies and ordeals that have turned Man's life into a nightmare. These ordeals and agonies have not been alien from Contemporary drama. Two Western theatres, In-Yer-Face and Verbatim respectively, have elaborated human agony in its different forms in their dramatic productions. The present study aims to trace the way(s) both theatres experience/experiment human agony in relation to elements of shocking and disturbing the audience through the employments of violent language, breaking taboos, portraying different acts of humiliation, and unconventional dramatic structures so as to force the audience to react to what is happening on the stage. By the Twentieth century, life becomes more complicated, the matter which demanded a different theatrical methodology. This is applied by a number of theatrical trends that have changed Western theatre in an avant-garde manner.
Rich Descriptions and Simple Explanations in Morphosyntax and Language Acquisition
This volume offers new perspectives on the tension between the rich patterns of language variation that emerge from comparative studies and the quest for simple theoretical primitives. The chapters explore the debate between Cartography and Minimalism: on the one hand, the need for detailed and articulated descriptions of the clausal architecture, and on the other, the endeavor to reduce the theoretical apparatus to fundamental computational mechanisms. The first part of the book begins with a reflection on the goals of modern linguistic theory, and investigates the principles of human language, in an effort to subsume the regularities of particular grammars under a small set of morphosyntactic and semantic primitives. The second part examines the clausal structure - both the CP-layer and the IP-layer - from a comparative perspective, which directly relates to the fundamental questions of universality, linguistic variation, and learnability addressed in the first part of the book. With chapters written by world-leading linguists who analyze a wide range of old and new phenomena, the volume will be a valuable resource for researchers and students interested in theoretical linguistics and language development.
Studies in Gothic
This volume investigates a wide range of topics in the study of Gothic, the oldest Germanic language to be attested in any substantial texts, some three centuries before the earliest Old English. It covers issues in sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, phonology, derivational morphology, verbal syntax, and discourse structure. Individual chapters examine Gothic-Latin bilingualism in sixth-century Italy, some hitherto undiscovered aspects of the production of the first edition of the Codex Argenteus associated with England, and the translations of Greek nominal compounds in the Gospels. Phonological and morphological topics covered include vowel lowering ("breaking"), the distinction between abstract nouns in -ei and -i?a, the shape of the 'yon'-word in Proto-Germanic, and the morphology and derivational history of the word fidur-dogs 'four-days-old'. The syntactic studies explore the development of verb + particle constructions in Gothic and Old Saxon, attempt to discern the order of noun plus adnominal possessive, and analyse the complex and in part cross-linguistically unparalleled markers of Gothic relative clauses. The volume concludes with two chapters that explore discourse structure: the first studies the particles nu and ?an in their dual roles as anaphoric elements ('now' and 'then') and as discourse particles, while the second examines the system of discourse articulation as a whole in the Gothic Gospels.
Historical and Sociolinguistic Approaches to French
This volume brings together two particularly dynamic areas of contemporary research on the French language. The chapters showcase the most innovative current scholarship in historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and in the burgeoning field of historical sociolinguistics which lies at their intersection. The research across the volume is strongly data-centred, drawing on a wide range of both well-established and more novel theoretical and methodological approaches in order to open up new perspectives on the study of the French language in the twenty-first century. Although it is written in English, the work presented here is underpinned by a range of different approaches from across the Francophone and Anglophone worlds. Particular emphasis is placed on combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, on diversifying tools, methods, and objects of inquiry, and on adopting comparative and multilingual perspectives where these shed new light on important questions relating to French. In these ways, Historical and Sociolinguistic Approaches to French highlights some of the most exciting new directions for linguistic research on the French language.
Royal power and sacredness
Born around 1908 in Bafilo, Essoh Irate簿 Zakari was the son of Bangna Kpara Tchakoura, known as Essoh-Tew矇, and Bida簿 Ali Gbana of the Wadi clan. He lost both his parents at an early age and was raised by his paternal uncle, Bangna Ali Abant癡, Superior Chief of Bafilo from 1918 to 1963. The latter died in 1963, after a 45-year reign, and the regency was entrusted to his nephew Essoh Irate簿 Zakari. It was during this regency that he made a name for himself as a dynamic, outspoken man. He held the position of Regent until 1966, when Chief Nassam Sa簿bou Toma was appointed to the supreme throne. This new Chief was called to God on February 7, 1973, after seven years of reign. At the end of the regency period, Essoh Irate簿 Zakari was elected Superior Chief of Bafilo on May 1, 1975, following an election presided over by Head of State Gnassingb矇 Eyad矇ma. He reigned for 24 years, from 1975 to 1999, under the name Ouro-Koura Essoh Irate簿 Zakari. He died on the evening of June 5, 1999, at the age of 91.
A portrait of colonial society
In this work, we analyzed Ferdinand Oyono's two novels: Une vie de boy and Le vieux n癡gre et la m矇daille, published in 1956. These two novels can be described as paintings of colonial society. Through these two texts, the author shows us the actions of Whites or Europeans in Africa, as well as the complexes and injustices created in a dominated society. The characters in both novels represent the social actors living under colonial domination.
Applied Linguistics
This book represents an attempt to shed light on some projects in Applied Linguistics. These projects fall within various domain in the field. Special emphasis has been laid upon research areas such as Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis. These fields are rather crucial to scholars as well as researchers working in Applied Linguistics. It is hope that the book can be of value and use to research students, scholars and language teachers.
Pragmaticalization
The present volume is dedicated to the phenomenon of pragmaticalization in the context of the theory of grammaticalization. While, in recent decades, the growing interest in the analysis of pragmatic phenomena within grammaticalization research was triggered, amongst others, by studies in the field of subjectivity and intersubjectivity in language, we still lack a model for a broad understanding of how changes on the discourse level come about and face a lack of information which provides a conclusive theoretical framework to systematically record the emergence of an entire layer of discourse units in language. The book is one of the first comprehensive collections contributed to the topic of pragmaticalization, and includes empirical studies on a wide range of languages from diachronic and synchronic perspectives. Aiming to refine our understanding of pragmatic shifts which can be observed by several linguistic units, the contributions discuss such issues as pros and cons of the concept of pragmaticalization, the parameters of pragmaticalization, the emergence of discourse markers and constructions with various pragmatic functions, pathways of change, including the influence of language contact.

George Orwell's Theory of Language
Presently, there is not a single book that would offer a comprehensive description of George Orwell's views on language. Andrey Reznikov's work is the first attempt to fill this gap. Professor Reznikov puts together pieces of Orwell's language puzzle, scattered throughout his essays, diaries, letters, radio talks, as well as works of fiction, and proposes the Newspeak model as Orwell's way to outline his theory. The theory is then tested with actual examples from three languages - modern English, Nazi German, and Soviet Russian. Finally, the author describes bias-free language as an implementation of Orwell's ideas. The new edition includes an afterword analyzing Newspeak of the 21st century.

Anthroponymic analysis of Jean Genet's stories
A branch of onomastics that studies the origins of proper names, the examination of anthroponymy in Jean Genet's stories focuses on the links between the instability of the author's name and the geographical mobility of his relationships with different social strata. Through a morpho-semantic analysis of the author's multiple appellations, the evolution of this fabulist and mythomaniac writer's names in his narratives draws its essence from his broken biography, which he transcends through backward sublimation to set himself up as characters both evil and illustrious.
Korean Dialectology
This book provides a comprehensive, informative overview of the history, contemporary state, and future direction of Korean dialectological research. As well as incorporating topics and approaches that widen the discipline, the book includes new, never-before-published cartographic visualisations of early Korean dialect data and findings. This book is essential reading if you intend to engage with the study of variation in the Korean language.
The Poetic Features of Urganjiyʼs Poetry
Orzu Urganjiyʼs lyrical legacy, hidden in the depths of the years, was still unexplored and almost forgotten. Because of this, after independence, along with other poets, Urganji's lyrics also demanded to be discovered. Over the years, there have been relatively few attempts to bring his legacy to the public. In this monograph, the young researcher author Azizbek Ibragimov discovered Orzu Urganzhii's work in a new direction using the latest methods. The scientific brochure is intended for students of philology department of higher educational institutions, students of secondary general education institutions and those interested in the work of Orzu Urganji.
The Linguistic Roots of Ancient Greek
This book traces the development of Greek from Proto-Indo-European to around the 5th century BC, drawing on all the tools of scientific historical and comparative linguistics. Don Ringe begins by outlining the grammar of Proto-Indo-European, focusing on its complex phonology, phonological rules, and inflectional morphology. He then discusses the changes in both phonology and inflectional morphology that took place in the development of Greek up to the point at which the dialects began to diverge, seeking to establish chronological relationships between those changes. The book places particular emphasis on the diversification of Greek into the attested groups of dialects, the relationship between those dialects, and the extent to which innovations spread across dialect boundaries. The final two chapters cover syntactic changes in the prehistory and history of Ancient Greek, and the sources of the Ancient Greek lexicon. The volume contributes to long-standing debates surrounding the classification of Ancient Greek dialects, and offers a discussion of the tension between cladistics and contact phenomena that is relevant to the study of the relationships within any language family.
Language, History, Ideology
This volume presents twelve in-depth case studies that critically examine the ways in which historical linguistics and language change interact with ideology. These varying interactions have been present since the birth of historical-comparative linguistics as a field of study. Work in historical linguistics may be appropriated or rejected for ideological reasons, most notably in the debates surrounding the Indo-European homeland; it can also by influenced by ideological biases, as in the 'alternative' histories that have been proposed for Moldovan and Maltese. The development of linguistically-defined nation states may itself fuel linguistic change, for instance through the suppression of minority languages or the division of existing languages to mirror political divisions, as occurred in the Balkans; or it may lead to the formulation of pseudo-histories designed to give a nation a more prestigious past. The book will be of interest not only to historical linguists but also to anthropologists, historians, and all those interested in language policy.
Languages of Australia's First Peoples in Narrative
Celebrating the diverse languages of Australia's First Peoples, this book presents stories told by elders in eighteen languages from around the continent, and explores their patterns of meaning. The stories recount the experiences of the tellers and histories of their communities, from tales of anti-colonial resistance to origin stories of the Dreaming. The book aims to make the languages accessible and engaging through the voices of the elders, while building readers' knowledge about language and language learning. It opens with some basic language knowledge for reading the stories. Each chapter then begins with the cultural and historical contexts of the stories, which are first previewed in English translation, then presented sentence-by-sentence, setting out the original sounds and wordings, glossed with plain English. Extracts are selected to illustrate patterns of meanings that are characteristic of each language. The final chapter sums up the various meaning patterns the stories use, and interprets their evolution in the light of First Peoples' deep histories, as recorded by archaeology and traditional knowledge. The book will be useful for language learning programs in communities and schools, for researchers of language and language teaching, and for any reader with an interest in the languages and cultures of Australia's First Peoples.
Writing with Students
Shortlisted for the M. A. K. Halliday Prize 2025Beginning with a review of the theory and pedagogic practices that have been influential in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) contexts, this book examines the practice of joint construction in a genre-based approach to literacy pedagogy. It investigates how teachers guide students to co-construct a text, drawing attention to the contested rationale for teachers taking a leading role when writing collaboratively with their students. Informed by systemic functional linguistics, the book puts forward an accessible approach to the analysis of classroom discourse that centres on the dynamic mediation of meaning. Through examples of classroom interaction involving international students who are studying EAP, and specifically as preparation for university entrance, it illuminates how classroom metalanguage and the organisation of classroom talk enables teachers to guide but not provide wording; metalanguage also enables students to critique and justify their choices as they 'try out' new academic language, modify and improve their writing.
Gobsmacked!
A spot-on guide to how and why Americans have become so bloody keen on Britishisms--for good or ill The British love to complain that words and phrases imported from America--from French fries to Awesome, man!--are destroying the English language. But what about the influence going the other way? Britishisms have been making their way into the American lexicon for more than 150 years, but the process has accelerated since the turn of the twenty-first century. From acclaimed writer and language commentator Ben Yagoda, Gobsmacked! is a witty, entertaining, and enlightening account of how and why scores of British words and phrases--such as one-off, go missing, curate, early days, kerfuffle, easy peasy, and cheeky--have been enthusiastically taken up by Yanks. After tracing Britishisms that entered the American vocabulary in the nineteenth century and during the world wars, Gobsmacked! discusses the most-used British terms in America today. It features chapters on the American embrace of British insults and curses, sports terms, and words about food and drinks. The book also explores the American adoption of British spellings, pronunciations, and grammar, and cases where Americans have misconstrued British expressions (for example, changing can't be arsed to can't be asked) or adopted faux-British usages, like pronouncing divisive as "divissive." Finally, the book offers some guidance on just how many Britishisms an American can safely adopt without coming off like an arse. Rigorously researched and documented but written in a light, conversational style, this is a book that general readers and language obsessives will love. Its revealing account of a surprising and underrecognized language revolution might even leave them, well, gobsmacked.

Language, Expressivity and Cognition
Providing an up-to-date, multi-perspective and cross-linguistic account of the centrality of the expressive function in communication, this book explores the conceptualization of emotions in language and the high emotional 'temperature' of a variety of contemporary discourses. Adopting a number of methodological angles, both qualitative and quantitative, the chapters present insights from cognitive linguistics, (critical) discourse analysis, corpus linguistics and sociolinguistics, as well as those resulting from the combination of these approaches. Using a wide variety of data types, from song lyrics and TV series to Twitter posts and political speeches, and through the analysis of a range of languages, including Arabic, English, Polish, Italian, Hungarian, and Turkish, the book offers a panoramic view of the multi-faceted interaction between language, expressivity and cognition.
Conversing in the Metaverse
How do metaverse technologies change how we communicate with each other? This book explores how existing metaverse technologies affect our communication, both verbal and non-verbal, as well as the ramifications of these effects. Communication is central to the human experience, and how we currently communicate (and will communicate) can affect our sense of identity and relationships with others, which can have huge long term societal repercussions. Utilising methods of digital ethnography and linguistic landscape, this book takes an in-depth look at what exactly the metaverse is-or will be-and tracks the technological and societal trends that surround it. To do so, it questions what differentiates the metaverse from earlier connected virtual worlds like World of Warcraft or Second Life, and features extracts from interviews with the users and developers of current metaverses, such as Roblox, Minecraft, and Gather.town. It also investigates the impact of the pandemic in changing and accelerating how we communicate in virtual spaces.
Translating Human Inner Life in and Between the Arts
The book examines how so-called human inner life - feelings, emotions, sentiments and self-reflection - permeates different forms of art. The methodological perspective is multidimensional covering translation studies and semiotics studies, including semiotics of passion, semiotics of culture, existential semiotics and biosemiotics, as well as different arts' fields - music, literature, film, visual arts, multimedia and video games. The book combines these approaches and tools for each field in order to create a new approach that permits an examination of the process of translation in various arts connected to human inner life. In this way, the reader can see the complexity of human inner life from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Tutunak繳
The diversity of Mexican Indigenous Linguistic cultures is a source of national pride. Today's speakers of the Tutunak繳, or Totonac, languages are the inheritors of a tradition going back to the rise of the great city states of early Mesoamerica, whose art and monuments are widely celebrated. Yet Mexico's identity remains deeply embedded in the Spanish language, and public services such as education, healthcare and policing are highly revealing of this, often minoritising MIL-speakers even in central Mexican states where they are in the majority. Lucia Brandi works with today's Totonac speakers to deconstruct these effects, and to articulate the power of young people to situate their language in broader discourses of social justice and community wellbeing.Lucia Brandi is Research Associate in the Department of Histories, Languages and Cultures of the University of Liverpool, and is editor of the Totonac/Spanish/English talking storybook Tsikan chu Nipxi' (Mantra Lingua, 2013). She is an academic consultant to the Totonac publishing project, Xtachuwin Kinkachikinkan Xa Akgtutu Nak繳.
First Language Acquisition
Now in its fourth edition, this textbook provides a well-illustrated account of how young children acquire language. Drawing on diary records and experimental studies from leaders in the field, it documents different stages and aspects of what children master, based on their conversational interactions with more expert (adult) speakers.
History and Novel
Dive into the rich interplay between history and fiction with this insightful critique. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of three seminal works: Rahi Masoom Reza's A Village Divided, O. V. Each novel, set against the backdrop of significant historical events, provides a unique lens to understand India's socio-political landscape. Through meticulous examination, the author unravels how these narratives weave historical facts with fiction, shedding light on the complexities and nuances of cultural identity, communal conflict, and political upheaval. This critique not only enhances our understanding of these literary masterpieces but also deepens our appreciation of the symbiotic relationship between history and storytelling. Perfect for scholars, students, and enthusiasts of Indian literature and history, this book invites readers to explore the profound impact of the past on the present through the power of narrative.
Towards a Feminist Translator Studies
This pioneering work advocates for a shift toward inclusivity in the UK translated literature landscape, investigating and challenging unconscious bias around women in translation and building on existing research highlighting the role of translators as activists and agents and the possibilities for these new theoretical models to contribute to meaningful industry change. The book sets out the context for the new subdiscipline of feminist translator studies, positing this as an essential mechanism to work towards diversity in the translated literature sector of the publishing industry. In a series of five case studies that each exemplify a key component of the feminist translator studies "toolkit", Vassallo draws on exclusive interviews with a range of activist translators and publishers, setting these in dialogue with contemporary perspectives on feminism and translation to propose a new agent-based model of feminist translation practice. In synthesising these perspectives, Vassallo makes a powerful argument for questioning existing structures in the translated literature publishing system which perpetuate bias and connects these conversations to wider social movements towards promoting demonstrable change in the industry. This book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of translation studies and publishing, as well as for the various agents involved in promoting translated literature in the UK and beyond.
The new spaces
Modernity has highlighted new relationships between man and his environment. From the perspective of the study of spatiality, this contribution focuses on the concept of new spaces theorized by French anthropologist Marc Aug矇, who apprehends space under new paradigms: non-places. It attempts to categorize the forms of these new spaces in the novelistic creation of the 19th century, a period disrupted by incessant revolutions, according to whether they are determined by fixity or mobility.
Pronunciation of Prefixed Words in Speech
The monograph "Pronunciation of Prefixed Words in Speech: The Importance of Semantic and Intersubjective Parameters" examines how the pronunciation of words with prefixes can be influenced by their meanings (semantic parameters) and the shared understanding between speakers and listeners (intersubjective parameters). It explores how different prefixes affect pronunciation patterns and how these patterns vary in different contexts. The study also analyzes how speakers adjust their pronunciation based on their audience's knowledge and expectations, shedding light on the interplay between linguistic structure and social interaction in spoken language.
First Language Acquisition
Now in its fourth edition, this textbook provides a chronological account of first language acquisition, showing how young children acquire language in their conversational interactions with adult speakers. It draws on diary records and experimental studies from leaders in the field to document different stages and different aspects of what children master. Successive chapters detail infants' and young children's progression from attending to adult faces, gaze, and hand motions, to their first attempts at communicating with gaze and gesture, then adding words and constructions. It comprehensively covers the acquisition of the core areas of language - phonetics and phonology, lexicon, grammar and sentence structure, and meaning - as well as how children acquire discourse and conversational skills. This edition includes new sections on how children build 'common ground' with adults and other children, individual differences in children's language development, how they collaborate with adults in constructing utterances, and how they qualify beliefs.
Rabindranath and Gangadhar
This book is a comparative study between two great poets of the adjacent states. While studying and analyzing their works both in Bengali and Odia, the author never felt who is superior or inferior of the two, but how equally inspiring both the poets are by delving deep into their souls. This book would be a great read for the common readers and great source of knowledge for the students who study or research in comparative literature.
Dancing with Metaphors in the Pulpit
Dancing with Metaphors in the Pulpit is a prequel to the writing and delivery of the sermon. The work of invention which includes the gathering of material is the primary focus of the book. The hard work of preaching takes place in the thinking, reading, and writing. The cross-disciplinary study provided here covers lessons learned by preachers and by novelists, poets, philosophers, and rhetoricians.
Priming Translation
This innovative volume builds on Michael S. Gazzaniga's Interpreter Theory toward radically expanding the theoretical and methodological scope of translational priming research. Priming Translation will be of interest to scholars in translation and interpreting studies, especially those working in cognitive translation and interpreting studies.
Uzbek Writers Anthology
This anthology includes everything that any artist tries to explore in his work in his own way: the human heart, psyche, painful points. For this, the emotional and philosophical observation of the author, the figurativeness of the image and expression, and the level of figurative thinking are of great importance in the writer's approach. Three main principles of psychological analysis are mentioned in the scientific works of Russian and Uzbek writers. M. Abdurahmonova, N. Shodiev, H. from Uzbek literary critics. The Umurovs tried to clarify this concept using the tools of artistic psychology. The terms "psychologism", "image of the inner world", "psychological analysis", "image of the spiritual world", "psychological analysis", "image of the inner life" are often used in literature. H.
