The Development of L2 Interactional Competence
This book presents unique insights into the development of L2 interactional competence through the lens of complaining, demonstrating how closer study of complaining as a social activity can enhance our understanding of certain aspects of language learning with implications for future L2 research.
Two Dimensions of Meaning
The book takes as its point of departure the notion that similarity and contiguity are fundamental to meaning. It shows how they manifest in oral, literate, print and internet cultures, in language acquisition, pragmatics, dialogism, classification, the semantics of grammar, literature and, most centrally, metaphor and metonymy.

Space and time in the work of Godofredo Rangel
Godofredo Rangel appears on the literary scene always associated with Monteiro Lobato due to their close friendship and the many letters exchanged between them. However, his memory is respected by great writers such as Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Autran Dourado. We propose to analyse the constitution of the literary space in Vida Ociosa (1920), from a perspective that characterises it as a regionalist space from Minas Gerais.
Mastering the Four Arguments
Learning to think well means learning to argue well. But it's not easy: Teachers often say they spend more time teaching students how to write than covering their subject, and students often wonder what all the fuss is about. What's the point when AI has all the answers anyway? The truth is that writing persuasively has never been more important. In Mastering the Four Arguments, Dr. Gregory Roper makes it simple for teachers and students alike, revealing that underneath every broiling debate of our time, there are actually only four kinds of arguments. These arguments are the core of stasis theory, devised two thousand years ago in ancient Rome to help lawyers and political orators cut past rhetorical distraction and identify the real point of controversy in any debate. Master the four arguments, and you'll find writing papers and winning debates with friends much easier. And you'll find that learning to argue well is a great first step toward something much bigger: By pursuing the truth, you'll be on your way to learning to live well, too. With its clear, straightforward approach, helpful exercises and examples, and notes for students and teachers alike, this book will make you the master of any argument.

The School of Libanius in Late Antique Antioch
This book is a study of the fourth-century sophist Libanius, a major intellectual figure who ran one of the most prestigious schools of rhetoric in the later Roman Empire. He was a tenacious adherent of pagan religion and a friend of the emperor Julian, but also taught leaders of the early Christian church like St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great. Raffaella Cribiore examines Libanius's training and personality, showing him to be a vibrant educator, though somewhat gloomy and anxious by nature. She traces how he cultivated a wide network of friends and former pupils and courted powerful officials to recruit top students. Cribiore describes his school in Antioch--how students applied, how they were evaluated and trained, and how Libanius reported progress to their families. She details the professional opportunities that a thorough training in rhetoric opened up for young men of the day. Also included here are translations of 200 of Libanius's most important letters on education, almost none of which have appeared in English before. Cribiore casts into striking relief the importance of rhetoric in late antiquity and its influence not only on pagan intellectuals but also on prominent Christian figures. She gives a balanced view of Libanius and his circle against the far-flung panorama of the Greek East.
Elements of Bantu oral literature

This literature deals with many themes and includes a wide range of literary genres. It includes poetry, prose, complex genres and many other categories practiced by the Batembo people. Thanks to this oral literature, we have discovered deep-rooted cultural values such as solidarity, the spirit of generosity, a sense of honor, respect for one's word...This literature was developed by our ancestors to explain certain natural phenomena, to enliven certain circumstances in life, to educate, instruct, train and inform all our generations. We would like to extend a special invitation to all readers to safeguard this African cultural heritage. It's time for everyone to take precautions to preserve and protect this LOA, which is under threat from globalization.
Learning Languages, Being Social
This book addresses increasingly diverse language learning trajectories in a modern, globalized world, specifically outside of formal classroom situations and with respect to second and additional language practices. This includes, but is not restricted to, intersections of formal and informal learning, computer-mediated contexts as well as family contexts and language learning in multilingual contexts. The book provides a current and specifically anthropological view on the second and additional language acquisition in non-school settings through various studies. It is unique in its focus and scope and is relevant to anthropologists and linguists, who are interested in the intersection of language and culture.
Lau V. Nichols and Chinese American Language Rights
Highlights the first-person narratives of key stakeholders of the landmark Lau v. Nichols case. This book employs a narrative policy portraiture approach to recenter the stories of the Chinese community involved in the Lau v. Nichols court case of 1974. This seminal Supreme Court case ruled that the failure to provide adequate and accessible instruction to approximately 1800 students of Chinese ancestry denied them the opportunity to participate in public education and constituted a discrimination on the basis of national origin. While much has been written on language education policy changes for emergent bilinguals in the US, the perspectives of the key actors involved in the case are rarely heard. This book brings Chinese and Chinese American voices to the forefront, placing the participants within the retrospective social context as they reach their own conclusions about the process and outcomes of the case. It draws upon research in language policy and Asian American studies and invites readers to imagine the social futures and possibilities for what Lau v. Nichols means for the 21st century and beyond. The volume fills a significant gap in narration, representation and retrospective research and will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in Asian American studies, bilingual education, educational policy and leadership, as well as teachers, school administrators and policymakers.

The Silenced Witch in "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare. Unvoiced Female Alterity in Popular Culture
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of M羹nster, language: English, abstract: The paper is about the silenced Witch in Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and reinterpretates the unvoiced female alterlity in popular culture. The thesis is that the witch Sycorax transcends gender boundaries by baring similarities to the male character in the play and therefore showing that men and women are equal or can potentially be equal if certain immutable traits like race and gender are not seen hierarchically in terms of power and superiority. Taymor, by claiming to perform a feminist approach, merely omits presenting Sycorax at all: She selects passages dealing with Sycorax from the original and evades them visually and audibly in her film, trying to moderate Sycorax's appearance, but actually erasing her completely out of discourse, which, by implication, is not unquestionably feminist.
Perspectives on beliefs in additional language teaching
This paper is a publication from my field of interest in beliefs in the teaching of additional languages. I have always been motivated to do research on this subject. This work is based on my research in the classroom and because I understand that exploratory practice makes sense when it comes to improving language teaching and pedagogical practices so that teaching and learning is optimised, therefore Applied Linguistics is an area of interest.

But language is more than just words. We'll also explore the world of sentiment analysis, where machines learn to identify emotions hidden within text. Imagine a future where computers grasp sarcasm, translate languages with nuance, and analyze reviews to understand customer feelings. Demystifying Language Processing unlocks the potential of AI to bridge the gap between human communication and machine understanding.
'The Fall of the House of Usher', 'Rip van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' in relation to Tzvetan Todorov's definition of the fantastic
Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), course: American Romanticism and the "Invention" of Tradition, language: English, abstract: Common themes of American Romanticism were sentimentalism, primitivism and the cult of the noble savage, political liberalism, the celebration of natural beauty and the simple life, idealization of the common man and an interest in the picturesque past. Additionally, an interest in the supernatural or in "the crepuscular heart of mystery" (Hart 725) was a widespread topic used by romantic authors. The latter used the supernatural to deal with the disorienting situation of 19th cen-tury American culture, which was not only pressured by the frontier experience but also by an un-ease concerning the experiment of democracy, the virtual nonexistence of a developed American society and racial issues especially relating to slavery and the Native Americans. Additionally, the occupation with the supernatural showed the American romanticists' concern with the "culture's occupation with death in an increasingly secular, individualistic, and scientific age". Two romantic authors that tried their hand as supernatural tales are Washington Irving and Ed-gar Allan Poe. In their supernatural tales ghosts, ghouls, vampires and other mysterious beings as well as inexplicable phenomena make their appearance. Some of these appearances can be ration-ally explained; others are clearly of supernatural origin. The reader of supernatural tales usually chooses one or the other explanation. However, sometimes the reader hesitates between the two. Stories, in which the latter is the case, are according to Tzvetan Todorov's definition situated in the fantastic. In my opinion Washington Irving's tales Rip van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher belong to different literary g
The Official Unofficials
South Africa recognizes eleven official languages, many of them African languages. Yet, these "official" languages remain largely sidelined in education, business, and government. "The Official Unofficials" explores the reasons behind this marginalization. Investigate the legacy of colonialism, the dominance of English, and unequal access to resources. This book proposes solutions for empowering African languages, promoting multilingualism, and creating a truly inclusive society that reflects the rich linguistic diversity of South Africa.

The Writings of Lyle F. Bachman
As one of the most recognized names in the fields of language assessment and applied linguistics, Lyle F. Bachman has produced a high volume of scholarly articles and books in the field of language assessment. These writings have strongly influenced the discipline and over the last three decades have played an uncontested role in shaping the field as we know it today. Until now, Bachman's work has been spread across various mediums and not existed in one place. The Writings of Lyle F. Bachman is the first book to assemble Bachman's work into a single, comprehensive volume. The collection is composed of seven major sections, each beginning with an introduction by the editors to provide context for the papers. The sections cover some of the most complex topics in the field, including validity and validation, the effects of test task characteristics, interfaces between language testing and second language acquisition, and epistemological issues in applied linguistics. The collection concludes with a state-of-the art paper and insightful reflections about the field of language assessment. The collection traces how Bachman's ideas and research insights have evolved throughout the years.Given Bachman's strong impact on the field of language assessment, this volume presents not only a collection of the writings, but also gives an overview of the ongoing issues and debates in the field. This book will be useful to both researchers and graduate students in the areas of language assessment and applied linguistics.
Researching Incidental Vocabulary Learning in a Second Language
Incidental language acquisition is the language that is learned informally, outside the constraints of the typical classroom, and vocabulary is one of the key elements in language learning and knowledge. This unique text is the first overview and hands-on methodological guide for researching second language incidental vocabulary acquisition.
Formal approaches to complexity in heritage language grammars
This collective volume breaks new ground in studies of linguistic complexity by addressing this phenomenon in heritage languages. It dismisses with the conception that heritage languages are less complex than their baseline or homeland counterparts and shows complexity trade-offs at various levels of linguistic representation. The authors consider defining properties of complexity as a phenomenon, diagnostics of complexity, and the ways complexity is modeled, measured, or operationalized in language sciences. The chapters showcase several bilingual dyads and offer new empirical data on heritage language production and use.
Neological Processes in Homosexual Language
This paper deals with the most recurrent intralinguistic processes in homosexual language, focusing on the neological classification of words incorporated into the group's language. When we consider the panorama of studies on the Portuguese language, we see that certain social groups have a peculiarity in their linguistic code: homosexuals, skinheads and surfers, for example, have their own characteristics when it comes to language. This differentiated linguistic code is also responsible for transmitting a culture and creating a specific social identity for its speakers. Alves (2004) points out that neologisms can be formed by mechanisms originating in the language itself, the autochthonous processes, or by lexical items from other linguistic systems. In this way, studies of neologisms help us to understand these changes that occur within the structure of the language. In this work, we analyze 98 neologisms present in the group's interaction in informal contexts and in the most diverse communicative situations.
Topoanalysis in The Dominican Supper
This dissertation was presented with the aim of researching the element of "space", more specifically the topos in A Ceia Dominicana: Romance Neolatino (2008), by Reinaldo Santos Neves. The aim was to analyze the importance and relevance of places in this literary work in its various forms, to relate the reflections and importance of spatiality in the behavior of the characters and its consequent function in directing the narrative, the reader's reception and the construction of spaces through semiosis, the involuntary extratextual identification of the Capixaba space through the cartography re-presented in the book from the empirical world, together with the appropriation of the Classical space through the Satiricon/Dominican supper interface and the symbolism of the signs related to this specific literary space.

Discourses, Modes, Media and Meaning in an Era of Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of our everyday lives - from the political to the economic to the social. Using a multimodal discourse analysis approach, this dynamic collection examines various discourses, modes and media in circulation during the early stages of the pandemic, and how these have impacted our daily lives in terms of the various meanings they express. Examples include how national and international news organisations communicate important information about the virus and the crisis, the public's reactions to such communications, the resultant (counter-)discourses as manifested in social media posts and memes, as well as the impact social distancing policies and mobility restrictions have had on people's communication and interaction practices. The book offers a synoptic view of how the pandemic was communicated, represented and (re-)contextualised across different spheres, and ultimately hopes to help account for the significant changes we are continuing to witness in our everyday lives as the pandemic unfolds. This volume will appeal primarily to scholars in the field of (multimodal) discourse analysis. It will also be of interest to researchers and graduate students in other fields whose work focuses on the use of multimodal artefacts for communication and meaning making. The Open Access version of this book, available at http: //www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

Bridging the Gap Between Models and Reality
Natural language processing (NLP) strives to bridge the gap between the complex world of human language and the structured world of machines. Coreference, the phenomenon where words or phrases refer back to previously mentioned entities, plays a crucial role in this endeavor. Understanding and resolving coreference is essential for tasks like machine translation, question answering, and sentiment analysis, as it allows machines to grasp the relationships between elements in a sentence and build a coherent understanding of the text. The Challenge of Coreference Human brains excel at coreference resolution. We effortlessly infer who "he," "she," or "it" refers to based on context and world knowledge. However, for machines, coreference presents a significant challenge. Consider the sentence: "The scientist discovered a new element. She named it after her hometown.
The subject personal pronoun and the verb in Spanish and Baule
In this book, we focus on the analysis of syntactic relationships between the subject personal pronoun and the verb in Spanish and Baule (the Kwa language of C繫te d'Ivoire), in order to show the similarities or dissimilarities between the two languages. To do this, we first presented the theoretical and methodological framework of the study. We then proceeded to a syntactic description of the relationship between the subject personal pronoun and the verb in Spanish. In addition, we focused on the relationship between the subject personal pronoun and the verb in Baule syntax, through a linguistic description and contrast with Spanish. At this level, our investigations focused on a syntactic contrastive analysis, strictly speaking, of the relationships between the subject personal pronoun and the verb in Spanish and Baule, where syntactic dissimilarities were highlighted.
Bilingualism. Code-switching
Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, course: Bilingualism: Code-switching, language: English, abstract: In the following paper, I will examine the field of bilingualism in children's speech production and the phenomenon of code-switching when children speak to a certain interlocutor. More specifically, I am going to focus on bilingual children's language choice patterns and especially on what influence parents' responses and reactions to code-switching their children have. Apart from that, I will consider other factors that may affect the choice of language in bilingual children's parent-directed speech. Specifying that, within my paper I will scrutinize the question "Do parental discourse strategies influence the language choice of bilingual children?".

The aesthetics of memory and confession in Maria Moura's memoir
Coming to the conclusion of this work was not easy. Travelling along the paths trodden by Rachel de Queiroz was a great adventure, given that her characters travelled along paths never before trodden by women in their own context. In view of this, it can be said that her characters are women beyond their time who faced challenges without letting them get them down. Even in the face of adversity, they configured themselves between memories and confessions in order to (re)construct their lives.
Words Matter
Language is one of the most fascinating and complex aspects of human existence. It is the foundation of our ability to communicate, to think, and to build relationships. It shapes our perceptions, influences our behaviors, and binds societies together. Yet, despite its omnipresence, the true power of language often goes unnoticed in our daily lives. Discourse, gender, and violence
This book includes contributions to research in the area of language use and gender-based violence (GBV). It demonstrates how the mechanisms of gendered power in news and social media texts operate linguistically in the study of GBV. The collection offers both methodological insights from novel empirical studies and careful theorisations of discourse and gender-based violence.
Making the 'Invisible' Visible?
This book examines some of the criteria against which translated fictional and non-fictional works are assessed. It not only provides a novel cross-cultural insight into reviewing practices, assessing how translations are reviewed differently in the United Kingdom, France and Germany, but it also compares the way in which reviewers for different platforms assess translated works, from a popular platform open to reviews from the general public, through mainstream broadsheets and cultural supplements, to specialised literary magazines. The book takes its inspiration from The Translator's Invisibility: A History of Translation, in which Lawrence Venuti examines the reviewing of translations and contends that fluency is the main criterion against which translations are read and assessed by reviewers, ultimately rendering the translator invisible. The book therefore provides a timely and thorough update to Venuti's study and offers insights into the status of translation in book reviews.
A Theory of Applied Linguistics
This book adopts as conceptual focus the technical mode of experience, exploring this characteristic mode of design as the angle from which the discipline of applied linguistics takes its cue. What makes applied linguistic concept formation possible? A number of elementary concepts and ideas are so basic to the discipline that they can neither be ignored nor avoided. These 'primitives' are identified by examining the connections among the technical and other modalities, such as the spatial, the physical, the social, economic, aesthetic, juridical and the ethical. A theory of applied linguistics must be robust enough to do justice to different modernist and postmodernist paradigms operating in the discipline, systematically identifying and assessing their strengths and blind spots. The book offers a response to the question of the usefulness of theory. The principles of design revealed in the theoretical analysis are given shape in developing imaginative language interventions to solve vexing language problems not for the sake of theory, but for the benefit of those affected. The book is intended for use both as a reference and as a comprehensive, unifying perspective of what the field is, by scholars in applied linguistics and related fields (TESOL, ESL, ESP, EAP, SLA studies, language assessment and testing, language policy development), by postgraduate students or those who teach or study applied linguistics.
Transformation, Embodiment, and Wellbeing in Foreign Language Pedagogy
This volume introduces pedagogical approaches and empirical studies that emphasize deeper, embodied engagement with language, the transformative potential of the language learning experience, and the importance of learner and teacher well-being. A deep learning orientation sees foreign language learning not as a psychologically neutral process of internalising linguistic rules but as an embodied process that is intimately tied to learners' experience of self, including emotion, body states, metaphoric understanding, aesthetic sensibilities, and moral intuitions. This volume challenges language teachers and teacher trainers to move beyond instrumentalist views of language learning, to recognise the deeply impactful nature of the language learning experience, and to consider how language pedagogy can contribute to the development of the learner as a whole person. Chapters in this volume consider the enactment of deep learning from diverse theoretical perspectives, including positive psychology, embodied cognition, cognitive linguistics, motivational theory, literary theory, and moral psychology. The volume provides language teachers, teacher trainers and applied linguists with concrete insights into the multidisciplinary foundations of conceptualizing, planning, and implementing deep learning in language classrooms.
Beneath the Iceberg
Ernest Hemingway's enduring popularity as a short story writer is evidenced by the tremendous critical acclaim his work continues to receive. Hemingway's stories captivate readers and cement his status as one of the most imitated writers in modern literature. Beneath the Iceberg: Unveiling Themes in Ernest Hemingway's Short Stories, delves into Hemingway's short stories as standalone literary masterpieces. Hemingway explored all the peculiarities of the post-war world in his stories. The smell of mustard gas in a battleground; cries of innocent people their desperate attempt to survive in the world of commotion and struggle against 'nothingness', all can be felt in his stories. The universal appeal of his main themes is the most striking element of his art though they are about war, violence, and death yet the focus is on the dilemma of the modern man caught in the web of the intricate world.
