Trans-Studies on Writing for English as an Additional Language
This Element charts the historical development of trans-concepts in writing studies and scrutinizes the discussions surrounding translingual and second language (L2) writing. It further examines the emerging trends within trans-studies on writing and highlights the implications that trans-pedagogies hold for English as an Additional Language (EAL) writing. Ecological Communication and Ecoliteracy
This open access volume is a call for ecological awareness and action through communication. It offers perspectives on how we, as humans, posit ourselves in relation to, and as part of, the environment in both verbal and non-verbal discourse. The contributions investigate a variety of situated communicative practices and how they instantiate and potentially influence our actions. Through the frameworks of ecolinguistics, multimodal studies and ecoliteracy, the book discusses how the environmental crisis is communicated as an urgent global and local issue in a variety of media, texts and events. The contributions present a wide range of case studies (including news articles, institutional websites, artwork installations, promotional texts, signposting, social campaigns and other), and they explore how communicative actions can help meet the challenges of ecologically-oriented change. The focus is on the impact that linguistic and multimodal communication can have on acting in, with and towards the environment seen as living ecosystems, or 'lifescapes'. The chapters offer a reflection on the way we experience, endorse, reframe and resist value systems in ecological communication, and propose alternative and healthier perspectives to respect and preserve the common and nurturing lifescapes through awareness and action. Indexicality
The book offers the first full-scale focused treatment of linguistic indexicality as a tool for analysis and explanation of the organization of linguistic structures. The book demonstrates the application of the concept of indexicality in the description of a broad range of linguistic phenomena, from the internal workings of morphology via relations within syntactic constructions to lexical and grammatical elements designed to hook on to features outside the clause in the interactional context. Walter Benjamin and Cultural Translation
Dissecting the radical impact of Walter Benjamin on contemporary cultural, postcolonial and translation theory, this open access book investigates the translation and reception of Benjamin's most famous text about translation, "The Task of the Translator," in English language debates around 'cultural translation'. For years now, there has been a pronounced interest in translation throughout the Humanities, which has come with an increasing detachment of translation from linguistic-textual parameters. It has generated a broad spectrum of discussions subsumed under the heading of 'cultural translation', a concept that is constantly re-invented and manifests in often heavily diverging expressions. However, there seems to be a distinct constant: In their own (re-)formulations of this concept, a remarkable number of scholars-Bhabha, Chow, Niranjana, to name but a few-explicitly refer to Walter Benjamin's "The Task of the Translator." In its first part, this book considers Benjamin and the way in which he thought about, theorized and practiced translation throughout his writings. In a second part, Walter Benjamin meets 'cultural translation': tracing various paths of translation and reception, this part also tackles the issues and debates that result from the omnipresence of Walter Benjamin in contemporary theories and discussions of 'cultural translation'. The result is a clearer picture of the translation and reception processes that have generated the immense impact of Benjamin on contemporary cultural theory, as well as new perspectives for a way of reading that re-shapes the canonized texts themselves and holds the potential of disturbing, shifting and enriching their more 'traditional' readings. The term is derived from the Old French celebrit矇 and from the Latin celibritatem, meaning "celebration" and "fame". In addition, "in the nineteenth century [that] the term 'celebrity' emerged". Theaters, vaudevilles, and other performances were met with considerable enthusiasm. Transfer Types In Second Language Acquisition Of English

Sub-Indo-European Europe
The dispersal of the Indo-European language family from the third millennium BCE is thought to have dramatically altered Europe's linguistic landscape. Many of the preexisting languages are assumed to have been lost, as Indo-European languages, including Greek, Latin, Celtic, Germanic, Baltic, Slavic and Armenian, dominate in much of Western Eurasia from historical times. To elucidate the linguistic encounters resulting from the Indo-Europeanization process, this volume evaluates the lexical evidence for prehistoric language contact in multiple Indo-European subgroups, at the same time taking a critical stance to approaches that have been applied to this problem in the past.

Motivation, Autonomy and Emotions in Foreign Language Learning
This book highlights the roles of several individual difference (ID) variables on the language learning process, exploring them from both the students' and the teachers' perspectives. It presents the results of a large-scale, mixed-methods investigation which was conducted with secondary school pupils and their teachers in Hungary. The quantitative questionnaire data is used to analyze the English language learners' motivation, autonomy and self-efficacy beliefs, and to examine the relationships between these and a wide range of positive and negative emotions. The qualitative data, consisting of interviews with teachers, gives voice not only to an understanding of student-related ID variables but also to teachers' reflections on their own cognitive, affective and behavioral processes. Taken together, the contrastive analysis of these two datasets yields interactional results that provide fresh insights into the language learning process and practical classroom applications.

American linguist Paul Postal wrote in 1964 that most of the "syntactic conceptions prevalent in the United States" were "versions of the theory of phrase structure grammars in the sense of Chomsky". British linguist John Lyons wrote in 1966 that "no work has had a greater influence upon the current linguistic theory than Chomsky's Syntactic Structures." Prominent historian of linguistics R. H. Robins wrote in 1967 that the publication of Chomsky's "Syntactic Structures" was "probably the most radical and important change in direction in descriptive linguistics and in linguistic theory that has taken place in recent years". Another historian of linguistics Frederick Newmeyer considers "Syntactic Structures" "revolutionary" for two reasons. Firstly, it showed that a formal yet non-empiricist theory of language was possible and more importantly, it demonstrated this possibility in a practical sense by formally treating a fragment of English grammar. Secondly, it put syntax at the center of the theory of language. Syntax was recognized as the focal point of language production, in which a finite set of rules can produce an infinite number of sentences. As a result, morphology and phonology were relegated in importance. "Syntactic Structures" also initiated an interdisciplinary dialog between philosophers of language and linguists. American philosopher John Searle wrote that "Chomsky's work is one of the most remarkable intellectual achievements of the present era, comparable in scope and coherence to the work of Keynes or Freud. It has done more than simply produce a revolution in linguistics; it has created a new discipline of generative grammar and is having a revolutionary effect on two other subjects, philosophy and psychology". With its formal and logical treatment of language, Syntactic Structures also brought linguistics and the new field of computer science closer together.

Amharic Terminologies in Primary Education
Mother tongue education plays a tremendous role in enhancing learners understanding if the language is capable enough to express necessary academic concepts. Even if Amharic has served as a medium of instruction in primary education for more than half a century, issues that come from the dynamic nature of terminology needs serious follow up and investigation. Thus, the study, specifically, examined term development approach; terminology development, standardization and implementation mechanisms; term formation methods, stakeholders' attitudes towards primary education Amharic terminologies (PEAT) as well as challenges that affect the development, standardization and implementation of PEATs. The study has been conducted using embedded design of mixed research. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through questionnaires from textbook writers, teachers, students and parents. Besides, interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with experts and students, respectively. Textbooks were also reviewed to gain data. Then, the data were analyzed using thematic and statistical techniques. The study revealed that textbook writers and curriculum experts are traditionally tend to use primarily puristic approach in order to coin transparent terms. Besides, the implementation of terminology development and advocacy mechanisms is not at a required level. Drawbacks were also observed when textbook writers and curriculum experts apply term implementation mechanisms. The study also discovered several challenges that hinder the development, standardization and implementation of PEATs. However, in relation to the efforts made to develop Amharic terms the study indicated that different term formation methods can be used in developing Amharic terms. Besides, the study disclosed that the attitude of students, teachers, parents and textbook writers towards Amharic terminologies is positive though there are some inappropriate terms that require revision.
