Expressions from the semasiological domain of phasal polarity (ʻstillʼ, ʻalreadyʼ, etc.) tend to be highly polyfunctional, with their various uses often extending into a wide range of other linguistic domains, both time-related and non-temporal. Yet these patterns have hitherto been investigated mostly for individual languages or smaller groups. This study arose from the singular desire to analyse literature from a contemporary perspective, looking at the various transformations that the process of urbanisation has brought to society. To this end, we put into play the forms of literary creation that began in modern times and that have been gaining ground over the last few years. Our aim would therefore be to prove that literary production arises from the needs of each period, and above all from the desires of the individuals who make up the community. As such, literature can be understood as a factor through which man builds his identity as a subject, since, as we have pointed out throughout this work, it is capable of humanising as it builds up the individual, pointing out to him the aspects that permeate his experience. In addition, it allows human beings to reflect their times, even in the form of a social complaint, but one that can elevate people to an understanding of their space, thus enabling them to realise themselves as subjects.

Becoming the System
Bilingual education is usually framed as a tool of antiracism. In Becoming the System, author Nelson Flores challenges that framework by examining the ways that institutionalizing bilingual education in the post-Civil Rights Era in the United States has served to maintain rather than challenge racial hierarchies. He adopts a methodology that he terms raciolinguistic genealogy as a point of entry for arguing that the institutionalization of bilingual education was part of a broader reconfiguration of race in the postcolonial era. This reconfiguration located the root of racial inequities within a psychologically damaged racialized subject who, after having experienced multiple generations of racial oppression, had either from a liberal perspective developed a culture of poverty or a radical perspective developed colonized mindset that prevented racial progress. After examining the ways that this psychologically damaged racialized subject provided the ideological foundation for the Bilingual Education Act (BEA), Flores then examines how institutionalizing the BEA produced a cadre of Latinx professionals who were afforded contingent proximity to whiteness in exchange for their acceptance of deficit framings of Latinx communities. He goes on to examine the ways that this institutionalization helped pave the way for neoliberal educational reforms that serve to maintain the racial status quo. This has culminated in the exponential growth of dual language education as a commodity for affluent monolingual white families even as the bilingualism of Latinx communities continue to be pathologized and policed. Flores concludes by implicating himself as a Latinx professional working in bilingual education in this political incorporation and posits the present volume as resistance to the commodification and weaponization of Latinx bilingualism.
Predications in Competition and the Rise of Serial Verb Constructions in English
This book explains the competition in the complementation of Old English aspectual and manipulative verbs that arises between finite and non-finite clauses on the one hand and between clauses and noun phrases on the other hand. The book combines textual and lexicographical sources of Old English in order to address this question from the perspective of the complex syntactic configurations within the verbal classes under analysis. The Impact of the Help America Vote Act of 2002 on Disability Turnout

It argues that HAVA has significantly improved accessibility at polling stations through specific provisions, particularly Section 301, which mandates accessible voting systems. These systems have enabled individuals with disabilities to vote independently and privately, thus addressing a primary form of discrimination at polling stations. The research heavily draws on data and analyses by Professor Lisa A. Schur and colleagues, and uses the policy cycle framework to assess HAVA's effectiveness in increasing voter turnout among this demographic. Three amendments of the U.S. Constitution1 regulate the right to vote for American citizens. The 15th Amendment, which was ratified on February 3, 1870, prohibits disenfranchisement "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude" (Amendment XV, U.S. Constitution). On August 18, 1920, the ratification of the 19th Amendment extended the right to vote to all female citizens of the United States and barred any discrimination of the right to vote on the basis of sex. Specificational and Predicative Clauses
In studies of copular clauses, the relation between specificational and predicative clauses has been a contentious issue. While most studies agree on the analysis of predicative clauses, specificational clauses have sparked much debate. A key concern is how specificational clauses with indefinite 'variable' NP (e.g. "A popular holiday go-to is Rome") compare to, and contrast with, other copular clauses, especially specificational clauses with definite 'variable' NP (e.g. "The main can't-miss in Italy is Rome") and predicative clauses with indefinite predicate nominative (e.g. "Rome is a great city"). This book addresses this concern by offering a functional-structural analysis of these three clause types in terms of their common characteristics and distinguishing features. The analysis of the clauses' structure and meaning is substantiated by evidence from corpus research which probes into various aspects of their actual usage (e.g. information structure and prosody, discourse-embedding). In doing so, the book offers an empirical basis for testing existing assumptions about predicative and specificational clauses, while also providing new insights into the interaction between the grammar and discourse usage of copular clauses.

Toward a Motivation Model of Pragmatics
With the "discursive turn" has come a distrust - a complete rejection by some - of theories that seek deeper reasons for surface phenomena. Rong Chen argues that this distrust, with its accompanying overemphasis on specificity and fluidity of linguistic meaning and social values, is unwarranted and unhelpful. Drawing on insights from social theories and various strands of pragmatics, he proposes a motivation model of pragmatics (MMP), contending that language use can be adequately, coherently, and elegantly studied via the motivation behind it in its varied and dynamic contexts. The model, with its well-laid out components, is then applied to (im)politeness research, cross-cultural pragmatics, diachronic pragmatics, discourse and genre analysis, conversation analysis, identity construction, and the study of metaphor, sarcasm, parody, and lying. MMP is thus a framework aimed at accounting for fluidity with stable notions, specificity with general principles, and differences with similar underlying factors. As such, the book should appeal to students of pragmatics, (im)politeness, conversation analysis, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, communication, sociology, and psychology.
The Many Faces of English -Ing
The book offers a new angle on long-standing questions about the categorial status of English participles and gerunds. The book makes a major point: participles are not verb forms which behave like adjectives, but actually are adjectives, linked with verbs via derivation. It argues that observed differences between participles and adjectives, which in the past have prompted linguists to draw a category distinction between them, are in reality due to the non-prototypical semantics of participles - a feature also found in other types of adjectives, with strikingly identical effects. Poetic thresholds
Love, resentment and a tormented intimate, in which shadows and lights hover, place the poets Dante Alighieri, Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Eugenio Montale crowned by the same threshold, that is, as if at some point they were in the same place, under the same doorway. This book aims to present a literary analysis that looks for the shadow of Dantesque melancholic poetry in some of Drummond and Montale's verses. In order to do so, the aim is initially to construct a brief literary journey and a historical overview of the bibliography of these poets, to investigate the points in common in the construction of these works and, subsequently, to map and make a connection between these works through a specific line - melancholy, a theme that will be defined throughout the text. By choosing some approximations and studying the commonalities in the texts of these poets, whether in the similarities in the construction of the characters, in the textual evolution or in the re-reading of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, the intention is to highlight the relevance of melancholy in the creative force of the authors, whose shadow is the Dantesque connection.
Socio-Pragmatic Variation in Ireland
Pragmatics represents the study of language use in socially grounded contexts and it is thus a central discipline in Linguistics. Due to its focus on language use, it has been referred to as a transdiscipline that interacts with a broad variety of disciplines that are concerned with social action and, as such, pragmatics overlaps with many other linguistic and non-linguistic disciplines. Irish English is one of the earliest varieties of English to have attracted the interest of scholars working on pragmatic variation. From a sociolinguistic and a pragmatics perspective, it represents one of the best studied varieties of English and can thus be argued to offer important impulses to the study of variationist pragmatics in general. Ulster Scots, though in close contact with Irish English, has received less attention. Given this important position of Irish English in pragmatics research and the paucity of such research on (Ulster) Scots, this volume explicitly focuses on socio-pragmatics and deals with the way speakers in and around Ireland use language in a way so that it assists them in the construction of their social identities or helps them navigate socio-cultural spaces.

This book is a progressive exposition on Halliday's academic thought and its origins by the renowned linguist Hu Zhuanglin, based on 30 years of research. The first part, "Chinese Origin," introduces readers to the author's gradual understanding that Halliday's academic thought mainly came from Chinese scholars such as Wang Li, Luo Changpei, and Gao Mingkai. In 1980s, Halliday and his students introduced the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics into the foreign language and linguistics circles in China; thus, Halliday's academic thought returned to where it originated. Metaphors, Trauma and Symptoms
This book investigates how victims of a large-scale traumatic event converge and diverge in metaphor use in describing their traumatic experiences. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods, the book identifies patterns that are shared by this group of trauma victims. Most studies on the work of Mme de Genlis, almost totally forgotten at one point, are partial and almost always focus on the same works, which date from the beginning of her literary activity. The interest of the present work lies in the fact that, by targeting a little-commented section of Genlis's oeuvre - 3 sentimental novels written in the first decade of the 19th century - we propose to draw out judgments concerning the originality of Mme de Genlis's ideas and works in relation to the intellectual climate in which they first appeared, to assess the viability of her pedagogical precepts and her vision of the ethical education she describes in her novels, and to define the particularities of the concept of practical or experimental virtue, which marks the moralizing approach of Genlisian production.The three sentimental novels: La calomnie ou les m癡res rivales (1800), Alphonsine ou la tendresse maternelle (1806) and Alphonse ou le fils naturel (1809), all reflect a concern for purity and morality, providing valuable savoir-vivre and proposing a modus operandi recommendable to a virtuous person.

This book examines public, political and media discourse in the context of failed states using Lebanon, a country torn by wars and political-financial corruption, as a contemporary case study. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA), the author brings political and economic theories into dialogue with socio-linguistics to argue that public discourse in a failed state not only plays a role in that collapse but is a key presenting symptom of social disintegration. Through CDA, the book makes this phenomenon visible, and contributes to existing definitions of the concept "failed" or "fragile" state. In addition, the qualitative data and analysis provided offer a tool to assess a state's vulnerability to collapse. The book also expands the sociolinguistic model to eavesdrop on the zeitgeist of the nation in order to examine the degrees of social cohesion, sectarianism and bonding. This book will be of interest to discourse analysts, journalists, politicians, policy-makers, and economists.

Exploring Ecolinguistics
Contributing to the rapidly emerging field of ecolinguistics, this book explores the role of language in mediating and determining our relationship with nature and in shaping attitudes and social practices in environmental areas. In doing so, it maps out research pathways for informed ecological debate that concerns both the planet and the discipline. The book centres on two case studies. The first is a nature reserve near Siracusa in Sicily run by Fabio Cilea, where flamingos have begun to breed despite the devastation of the nearby coastline by one of the largest petro-chemical plants in Europe. The second is High Ash farm, a small farm near Norwich, UK. Farmer, Chris Skinner, is a passionate naturalist who for 30 years has presented a programme on BBC Radio Norfolk. Through analysing the discourse of both Skinner and Cilea, the book explores what it can reveal about the underlying environmental visions that sustain them. Together with the discourse of other engaged ecological figures, a picture emerges of the connections that exist between our beliefs/attitudes, language and the natural world. Presenting a framework for analysing environmental discourse from a primarily positivist standpoint, the book draws attention to the discourses that underline social practices felt to be useful, necessary and beneficial in these moments of environmental crisis. Although these contexts are European, the methodologies applied, as well as the ecological and linguistic issues dealt with, are universal, clarifying the relationship between social practices and language itself, viewed in the book as an ecosystem that is also in need of loving attention.
Constructing Brexit Britain
Combining corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, and a discourse analysis of narratives, this book considers one aspect of the Brexit process: the language that journalists, politicians and individuals used to write and talk about what it means to be British and European around the time of Brexit. It reveals a trajectory towards a discourse of national division in Brexit Britain in three datasets: pro-Brexit newspaper articles, UK Government documents, and interviews with individual citizens. Demonstrating the important role that (supra-)national identity discourses played in discussions about Brexit, the book traces a shift towards a representation of Brexit Britain as divided and in decline at a time when the construction of a collective identity is likely to be paramount. The emerging representation is a direct contradiction of the great global trading nation narrative that the Vote Leave campaigners - and later the UK Government - promised, questioning the discursive success of the Global Britain project. Constructing Brexit Britain demonstrates that the transition from pre- to post-Brexit Britain was a crucial period of destabilisation for institutional and lay national identity narratives. It also illustrates that the coming years are likely to be just as important, as the UK forges its post-Brexit place in the world amid declining levels of trust in politicians, calls for a second Scottish membership referendum, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cost of living crisis.

In particular, we looked at the work of the author from Esp穩rito Santo, A Ceia Dominicana: Romance Neolatino (2008), whose writing draws on various classic authors, both national and from Esp穩rito Santo, as well as freely mixing different textual genres.
The sacredness of poetic alchemy in Bqudelqire's Flowers
In this article, we attempt to shed light on Baudelaire's poetic alchemy in his masterpiece Les Fleurs du mal, and also on the technique by which this poet-chemist succeeds in transforming the science of alchemy into an aesthetic phenomenon that has remained immortal for centuries. First of all, alchemy, now known as chemistry, is a technico-practical science that revolves around the transformation of base elements into noble metals. Later, this science successfully entered other fields of knowledge such as astronomy, philosophy, literature and even medicine, thanks to its theoretical-mystical nature. Nevertheless, alchemy assumes that mediocre materials, such as iron, are originally expensive elements, like gold, but they need to be transformed several times in order to achieve nobility. The author of Les Fleurs was undoubtedly among the first to consider this alchemical process as a new resource for inspiration, and as a very fertile field from which to profit in the course of his literary productions.
French subject islands
This book examines extractions out of the subject, which is traditionally considered to be an island for extraction. There is a debate among linguists regarding whether the "subject island constraint" is a syntactic phenomenon or an illusion caused by cognitive or pragmatic factors. The book focusses on French, that provides an interesting case study because it allows certain extractions out of the subject despite not being a typical null-subject language. The book takes a discourse-based approach and introduces the "Focus-Background Conflict" constraint, which posits that a focused element cannot be part of a backgrounded constituent due to a pragmatic contradiction. The major novelty of this proposal is that it predicts a distinction between extractions out of the subject in focalizing and non-focalizing constructions. The central contribution of this book is to offer the detailed results of a series of empirical studies (corpus studies and experiments) on extractions out of the subject is French. These studies offer evidence for the possibility of extraction out of the subject in French. But they also reveal a clear distinction between constructions. While extractions out of the subject are common and highly acceptable in relative clauses, this is not the case for interrogatives and clefts. Finally, the book proposes a Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) analysis of subject islands. It demonstrates the interaction between information structure and syntax using a representation of information structure based on Minimal Recursion Semantics (MRS).
A grammar of Kagayanen
Kagayanen is a resilient Austronesian>Greater Central Philippine>Manobo language spoken by about 30,000 individuals, mostly in Palawan province in the Philippines. This grammar is the result of nearly 40 years of research by Carol Pebley and a team of Kagayanen speakers and non-Kagayanen co-workers. The primary data source is a corpus of texts collected over a 20 year period. These texts, three of which appear in an appendix to this book, provide vivid insights into Kagayanen ways of being. The grammar is written with a general linguistics audience in mind, from a "communication first" perspective. It should prove useful to specialists in Austronesian languages, linguistic typologists, and others interested in doing research in the central Philippines. It is also hoped that this grammar will be an encouragement to Kagayanen speakers, proving that their language is wonderfully complex and deserves an equal place alongside other regional and international languages.
Research on the Translation of the Chu ci, Zhuangzi, and Xiyou ji
This book consists of five chapters, focusing on the case studies of Jingchu culture classics translation. Chapter 1 deals with the English translation of food culture-specific expressions in the Chu ci (楚辞) from the perspective of cultural schema theory. Chapter 2 makes a tentative study of translation methods for Chu culture-specific items in the English translations of the Zhuangzi (庄子). Chapter 3 explores the translation of culture-loaded words in the "Jiu ge" (九歌) of the Chu ci. Chapter 4 examines the influence of translators' cultural identity on translating, with a focus on the Chu ci. Chapter 5 tentatively deals with the rendering of monsters' names in the Xiyou ji (西游记).

Audiobooks as Artifacts
Their ever-evolving popularity notwithstanding, audiobooks remain a rather undertheorized phenomenon. The prevailing handful of existing studies seem to have adopted an inherently historicist approach, which fails to identify and scrutinize their aesthetic importance. Thus, rather than regarding them as mere recorded 'versions' of existing literary works, this book explores them as the unique products of a hitherto undefined artistic genre. As performance-based aural artifacts, the very act of listening to them is rendered an aesthetic experience in its own right. By effectively embracing an interdisciplinary approach and introducing a set of aesthetic questions and philosophical conundrums (ignited by a paradigmatic application of the New Institutional Theory of Art), this study establishes a new aesthetic category-which, in turn, not only classifies audiobooks as artworks to all intents and purposes, but also generates the criteria and parameters for evaluating their merit. Since the proof of the proverbial pudding is purportedly in the eating, in surveying a series of concrete case studies-each highlighting different degrees of complexities-this study mainly examines first-person narratives as the most natural medium for the aesthetics of the audiobook. As such, the investigation herein provides one with comparative close listenings, appropriately analyzing and debating their aesthetic properties. Finally, in exploring what this study identifies as one's informed intuition and its role in the craft of casting audiobooks, this study also proposes a new understating of how aesthetic appreciation works in action.
