The Curse in the Territory
This study re-evaluates Manuel Mar穩a Madiedo's La maldici籀n (1859) beyond its traditional classification as costumbrista literature. Drawing on narratology, historical geography, and neobaroque aesthetics, the book explores how the novel engages with the cultural, racial, and territorial tensions of 19th-century Colombia. It situates the figure of the arrochelado and the region's libres de todos los colores at the heart of the national narrative, revealing submerged histories and alternative forms of habitation along the Magdalena River. Through narrative ambiguity, irony, and symbolic landscapes, Madiedo's work critiques liberal ideals and enacts a hybrid literary form that challenges hegemonic representations of space and identity. By uncovering these layers, the research contributes to broader discussions of subaltern agency, literary form, and the cultural construction of Colombian territory.

The Usage of Idioms in the Business World
Idioms are figurative expressions that convey meanings different from the literal interpretation of their individual words - such as "shoot yourself in the foot" or "let the cat out of the bag." They are deeply embedded in language and culture, acting as vivid communicative shortcuts that express complex ideas, emotions, or social norms. This workbook studies the origins of idioms, their cultural context, and linguistic application. However, there are thousands of idioms, and they vary from country to country. Therefore, this work was primarily designed to assist business students who use English as a second language (ESL) and specifically focuses on those idioms that are used in the business world. Idioms are not slang, and the difference between the two is comprehensively explained. The format of this workbook and reference guide consists of presenting the most common business idioms in alphabetical order, providing a definition for each, and then using the idiom in a sentence to create a contextual illustration.

"Said Without Saying"
"Said Without Saying: Indirect Speech Acts in Indian Fiction" is an insightful exploration into the subtle power of language and meaning in literature, focusing on two profound Indian novels - Fasting, Feasting by Anita Desai and A Matter of Time by Shashi Deshpande. This book delves into the intricate world of indirect speech acts to uncover how what is left unsaid often reveals more than what is explicitly stated. It offers a rich, interdisciplinary dialogue between linguistics, pragmatics, and literary studies. At its core, this work is a study in pragmatics, the branch of linguistics concerned with how context influences the interpretation of meaning. Within this framework, indirect speech acts - utterances where the speaker's intended meaning differs from the literal expression - serve as powerful tools of character development, conflict, irony, and social commentary. When characters say one thing and mean another, they mirror the complexities of real human communication, especially in cultures where restraint, indirectness, and layered discourse are embedded in social interaction.
A Psycholinguistic Perspective on the Impact of Attention Deficit
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent attention deficit, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, which tends to affect academic performance and language development. This study investigates the impact of ADHD on the academic and communicative abilities of early primary school children. It also takes into consideration how teachers recognize and manage such problems in real classroom situations. The study uses a multi-method approach, including unplanned observations of six children at the psychiatry, structured classroom observations of 17 children, semi-structured interviews with four speech therapists, and 35 questionnaire responses from psychologists and psychiatrists. Additionally, 196 primary school teachers completed a questionnaire. The study also includes a comparison of four handwriting samples of children with ADHD and their peers to look for possible psycholinguistic and motor differences. The results show that ADHD significantly affects attention, working memory, and expressive language, which disrupts children's ability to follow instructions, memorize, and communicate efficiently.
