Dilla Time
WINNER OF THE PEN/JACQUELINE BOGRAD WELD AWARD FOR BIOGRAPHYNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "This book is a must for everyone interested in illuminating the idea of unexplainable genius." --QUESTLOVEEqual parts biography, musicology, and cultural history, Dilla Time chronicles the life and legacy of J Dilla, a musical genius who transformed the sound of popular music for the twenty-first century. He wasn't known to mainstream audiences, even though he worked with renowned acts like D'Angelo and Erykah Badu and influenced the music of superstars like Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. He died at the age of thirty-two, and in his lifetime he never had a pop hit. Yet since his death, J Dilla has become a demigod: revered by jazz musicians and rap icons from Robert Glasper to Kendrick Lamar; memorialized in symphonies and taught at universities. And at the core of this adulation is innovation: a new kind of musical time-feel that he created on a drum machine, but one that changed the way "traditional" musicians play. In Dilla Time, Dan Charnas chronicles the life of James DeWitt Yancey, from his gifted childhood in Detroit, to his rise as a Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer, to the rare blood disease that caused his premature death; and follows the people who kept him and his ideas alive. He also rewinds the histories of American rhythms: from the birth of soul in Dilla's own "Motown," to funk, techno, and disco. Here, music is a story of Black culture in America and of what happens when human and machine times are synthesized into something new. Dilla Time is a different kind of book about music, a visual experience with graphics that build those concepts step by step for fans and novices alike, teaching us to "see" and feel rhythm in a unique and enjoyable way. Dilla's beats, startling some people with their seeming "sloppiness," were actually the work of a perfectionist almost spiritually devoted to his music. This is the story of the man and his machines, his family, friends, partners, and celebrity collaborators. Culled from more than 150 interviews about one of the most important and influential musical figures of the past hundred years, Dilla Time is a book as delightfully detail-oriented and unique as J Dilla's music itself.

The Making of Abba
Swedish quartet ABBA released their third, self-titled album in 1975. It was a record that led the group to their international breakthrough and eventual domination of the 1970s pop music world. ABBA also provided a blueprint for everything that defined the group, cementing once and for all the band's musicality and approach. It presents a unique and timeless sound that still resonates fifty years on, remaining as fresh as the day this remarkable recording was released. This is the story of the album, from its inception to its triumphant commercial breakthrough and all in between, including ABBA's first live tour outside of their native Sweden. It is written from a perspective of not only a fan, but from that of a musician who has recorded with some of ABBA's inner circle, as well as spending time in Stockholm. Along with in-depth analysis of the music, it also includes new and exclusive interviews with many of the original musicians who were there in the studio, recording the album's now classic tracks. These include bassist Mike Watson, plus guitarists Janne Schaffer and Finn Sj繹berg, and the book features a foreword by author Carl Magnus Palm. It's a story retold like never before.
Temptations 1960 to 1978
As one of the greatest acts to come out of the Motown Record Corporation, the influence of the Temptations cannot be overstated. Their catalogue of classic hits and their performances have set the standard for all male groups that followed. The 'Classic Five' line-up of Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin created a legacy that has endured to this day. Aided by William 'Smokey' Robinson, and later Norman Whitfield, the group had hits such as 'Get Ready', 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg', and, of course, 'My Girl'. This line-up only lasted four years, but they created such an impressive legacy and following that the group has been able to carry on until the present day. The introduction to the group of Dennis Edwards in 1968 coincided with a new style of music for the group, produced by Whitfield, dubbed 'psychedelic soul', inspired by Sly & The Family Stone, that gave the group a second act of new hits. However, by 1972, only Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin would remain from the 'Classic Five' line-up and the hits were becoming more elusive. This book explores their releases from their founding to 1978, when the group had endured further personnel changes and a change in record label. It examines the group's triumphs and struggles during this period, and tells a remarkable story of persistence and longevity.

Cream Chronicled
This is the fourth of Nettie Baker's highly acclaimed and entertaining books. In this one she tackles the challenge of documenting every show by Cream, the legendary band formed by her father Ginger with Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton. Cream lasted just over two years (July 1966 - November 1968). They briefly got together again for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1993, and finally made it to their exciting and well-documented 2005 reunion.Thorough research answers once and for all questions of how Cream formed, were they Cream or The Cream? What really happened when they jammed with Hendrix? Why did they split up? And much more, debunking many tired old myths in the process. Nettie was really there at the time (offering behind the scenes tit bits) and has also drawn on the contemporary accounts of how Cream was experienced on the day both by fans and the musicians themselves. As Nettie says, "Crucially, these were very young men who found themselves living in interesting times."Throw out everything you thought you knew about them; get to know the young Ginger, Jack and Eric and be prepared for a few surprises. Cream could never have existed and achieved such an enduring legacy without having a deep and profound friendship at its core. They were brothers.

PrefaceThe CHURCH Concerto - For PianoChurch buildings for millennia was, and is, man's greatest technological, architectural, and artistic of all creations. A physical, solid structure on planet Earth to represent the maker and container of infinity. Yes, one's very existence has been kissed upon. Your most intimate has been kissed. Just consider the term Omni. Omni means all. Within this contains every imaginable power - and imaginable love? No. The unimaginable. The solo instrument in this concerto must be one with gigantic magnificence; the king of instruments: the organ. According to scholars and academics, the term church originates from the Greek word for ecclesia: an assembly; the people. Therefore, the word Church has two meanings that has become interchangeable: Christians, and a meeting place for Christians. An Excellent Transcription! The CHURCH Concerto was originally composed for organ. When I embarked on transcribing the piece, I did not foresee any issues. Both organ and piano scores were open in different windows of the composing software. The outcome was, not a transcription, but an arrangement: to the extent that I recomposed using notes at either end of both instrument's compass. Now, one can play this gigantic, monumental music on 88 b&w keys.
Decoding the Musical Signatures of Sri Guru Granth Sahib
Decoding the Musical Signatures of Sri Guru Granth Sahib brings together a curated collection of papers presented at the International Kirtan Conference held from 22-24 October 2024 at Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab. Organized by the Nād Music Institute (USA) in collaboration with the Bhai Vir Singh Chair, Punjabi University, this landmark conference convened scholars, musicians, theologians, and practitioners from around the world to examine the spiritual, interpretive, and musical foundations of Sikh traditions. Across three enriching days, 25 presenters representing six countries offered diverse perspectives-ranging from in-depth theoretical analyses of the musical signatures of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib to innovative approaches that leverage emerging technologies for learning and teaching Gurbani Kirtan in the 21st century. This volume captures those insights, contributing to a deeper understanding of the sonic, pedagogical, and devotional dimensions of Sikh sacred music.
The Music of the Spheres
Is there a harmony between heaven and earth? Are we connected with the planets?Since the dawn of time, mystics have talked of a heavenly music, audible only on a subtle level. Until recently, the theme of The Music of the Spheres was taken seriously in many cultures and religions around the world, and even in music theory. And yet now it has become mute. Or perhaps we have become deaf. Can we learn how to hear this heavenly music again? This book begins by looking at the Music of the Spheres throughout history, and how paradigm shifts in consciousness, from mysticism to materialism, have reduced the Music of the Spheres to a fanciful myth. But we will not allow this sound to become a myth so easily. We will instead fine-tune our listening, exploring physical sound, soul sound and the highly subtle spirit-sound. A deeper understanding of the quality of number will then prepare us to internalise and spiritualise the musical intervals found in Pythagoras' and Kepler's Music of the Spheres. Finally, a future initiation path of Listening is suggested and described.Through personal anecdotes, listening exercises and philosophical inquiry, based mainly on Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy, Paul Lawrence explores this subtle sound in an exciting and masterly way. Your appreciation for music and its significance for human and world development will not be the same after reading this inspiring book.
Shadowplayers
A revised and expanded edition of the long out-of-print history of Factory Records, the legendary record label that launched Joy Division, New Order, and Happy Mondays. Featuring a foreword by Jon Savage. "Definitive and comprehensive, this is the actual story of Factory Records" --Peter Saville In 1978, a "Factory for Sale" sign gave Alan Erasmus and Tony Wilson a name for their fledgling Manchester club night. Though they couldn't have known it at the time, this was the launch of one of the most significant musical and cultural legacies of the late twentieth century. The club's electrifying live scene soon translated to vinyl, and Factory Records went on to become the most innovative and celebrated record label of the next thirty years. Always breaking new musical ground, Factory introduced the listening public to bands such as Joy Division, whose Unknown Pleasures was the label's first album release, New Order, Durutti Column and Happy Mondays. Propelled onwards by the inspirational cultural entrepreneur, Tony Wilson, Factory always sought new ways to energise the popular consciousness. Now fully revised and expanded with a new chapter, Shadowplayers is the most complete, authoritative and thoroughly researched account of how a group of provincial anarchists and entrepreneurs saw off bankers, journalists and gun-toting gangsters to create the most influential record label of modern times. Based on both archive and contemporary sources, the book tells the full story of Factory's heroic struggles, its complex web of inventive, idiosyncratic and tragic personalities, and ultimately, the acclaimed and much-loved music it produced.

The Folk River - Memories from the Early Scottish Folk Club Scene
The folk club scene did not really take off until the 1960s. In fact, in 1960 there were only four folk clubs in Scotland, the oldest of them only two years old. Ten years later there was one in practically every town of any size, several in the cities. This was the same story throughout the United Kingdom. The folk scene grew in parallel with technology. National television coverage, recording techniques and affordable transport brought the music into many homes and allowed both performers and audiences to travel more around the clubs and festivals to hear the folk music of the day. In 2019 two of my friends that I had known since I was a young lad at school passed away. They were both beneficiaries of Norman Buchan's hugely influential Ballads Club at Rutherglen Academy, as was I. We had been introduced to folk music in our teens and it stayed with us all of our lives.
Castrato Phantoms
A new mapping of castrato afterlives in modern Rome Around 1830, opera houses stopped using castrati, and Rome and the Vatican became home to their glorious singing, engineered by surgery and intensive vocal training. Castrati were long mired in secrecy, obfuscations, and lies about their origin and conditions, not least the last of them, Alessandro Moreschi. Musicologist Martha Feldman declines to accept these deep-seated mysteries and concealments. After a decade and more of digging through archives and family histories comes her exciting transdisciplinary and quasi-cinematic account of Moreschi, whose recordings preserve the only sonic trace of a solo castrato. Yet Moreschi's story extends far beyond him. It opens up intrigues, politics, and histories of the Vatican, everyday histories of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Rome, the world of Roman opera, the city's unique m矇lange of sacred and vernacular tropes, and representations of Rome by iconic film director Federico Fellini. Moreschi and Fellini turn out to have been related by marriage, but also to share synergies grounded in Rome's persistent inclination to vernacularize the sacred. Far from telling of one anomalous figure, Feldman's gripping history convinces readers that Moreschi, like Fellini, can be read as an improbable index of Roman consciousness, both during his own life and well beyond.
The Complete Plays Of Gilbert And Sullivan
The complete plays of Gilbert and Sullivan presents a vibrant collection of comic operas that blend satire, humor, and musical brilliance into performances that remain timelessly entertaining. Set in imaginative worlds often reflective of Victorian society, these operas explore themes such as class, duty, love, and identity through absurd situations and witty dialogue. The collection opens with The gondoliers, set in a lively Venetian piazzetta, where romance and routine are quickly disrupted by the arrival of unexpected news about royal inheritance. Amid floral offerings and playful interactions, two gondoliers find themselves entangled in a comedic case of mistaken identity, caught between their simple lives and the sudden possibility of monarchy. This opera, like others in the collection, uses lighthearted scenarios to probe deeper questions of power, privilege, and personal choice. With cleverly constructed lyrics and spirited ensemble scenes, the plays showcase the seamless collaboration between lyricist and composer. Their works often mock the rigid structures of society while celebrating human folly and warmth, offering audiences a clever, melodic, and joyful escape through operatic storytelling and theatrical charm.
The Story of the Christmas No. 1
Marc Burrows explores the peculiarly British cultural phenomenon of the Christmas singles chart. The festive top spot was something that, prior to 1973, wasn't particularly important but has since become a cornerstone of the December news cycle and, for years, an annual cultural moment ... that may have reached the end of its life.He traces the origins of the concept, through the Beatles and the-years-when-it-wasn't-really-a-thing, the Glam rock boom, Band Aid, novelty records, the X-Factor years and the awful Sausage Roll charity records of the 2020s. This exploration is supported by interviews with figures involved in some of the most iconic hits and notable chart battles of the past half century and obsessive, in-depth research. He explores the sometimes fascinating and sometimes weird and unlikely stories behind some of the most beloved (and some of the most utterly loathed) songs in British musical history. The Story of the Christmas No. 1 is more than just a nostalgic music book. It subtly explores pop culture and social history, examining our relationship with Christmas, how our national identity is reflected in the music we listen to together, and how the music industry has changed. It also reveals how the Christmas No. 1 reflects the current social reality of today and how technology and culture have reshaped the way music is consumed.
