In some cases, the work evokes nostalgia, but not primarily so. Adrienne Salinger hears from current teenagers often; many send her pictures of their bedrooms today. Social media encourages users to endlessly "rebrand" their identities, creating idealized fantasies, striving for perfection. These photographs are not about perfection. A Village Walk
This morning, I stepped out for another simple walk through the village. Camera slung over my shoulder. Nothing planned. A few minutes into the walk I heard a concentration of voices up ahead - chanting, laughter, the unmistakable hum of people gathering. As I approached the house I realized a family was holding an annual ceremony to honor a loved one who had passed. Monks were assembled and neighbors were still arriving, quietly joining in.Although it was already nearing its end, I moved carefully yet quickly into and through the yard, documenting the experience. I was offered food and stayed a while longer. Just after the monks departed, a truck arrived carrying a brand new farm tractor. Within minutes a shrine was being prepared to bless the machine. The gathering quickly shifted into another ceremony. Children ran through the yard. Dogs lay in the shade. Conversations floated through the air. And just a few feet away a herdsman tended to a cow being bred. Then voices rose sharply, chants echoed, and prayers were offered as the tractor sat on a mat before them.These pages offer a candid peek into a moment of daily village life. Ordinary and extraordinary often fold together into one here ... if you're paying attention.For the people here in these small border villages, this is simply another day lived together as a community.
Elegantly Wasted
罈 Dance it over竄 and 罈 come by and let yourself go, 竄 罈 Your brain urgently needs a vacation, 竄 read the flyers for Ritter Butzke, and the result is, of course, 罈 From euphoric to exhausted.竄 Ritter Butzke was set up by Johann von Jena and friends after he stumbled upon the vacant factory site of Aqua Butzke Works in Kreuzberg's Ritterstra? e in 2006 while searching for a temporary party location. The club operated illegally from March 2007 to January 2009, was shut down by authorities, and reopened legally in 2010. 罈 It was probably the largest illegal club in the world ... I believed we were living the best time of our lives in this massive speakeasy - free from bureaucracy, accounting, regulations, and staff schedules. I worried that the fun, which came with freedom, would quickly fade.竄 But that was far from the case, as in the 2010s, 罈 Berlin was named the city where the party culture of the 21st century was reinvented, 竄 as Max Dax says in his interview with Johannes von Jena and Ben de Biel. Ben de Biel is the photographer behind the series in this book, having documented Ritter Butzke since its early days. Photography in clubs was not only frowned upon but often forbidden, as these spaces were seen as 罈 safe zones竄 by owners and visitors. But Ben de Biel, the operator of the legendary Maria am Ostbahnhof, captured the scene as someone deeply rooted in it. In the 1990s, he photographed the squatter scene in Friedrichshain; 罈 10 years later, my nightly taxi rides home from Club Maria. At Ritter Butzke, I began photographing parties typologically because club culture was the reason I moved to Berlin over 35 years ago. I also knew no one had photographed Berlin clubs on this scale before, and I had a camera - but more importantly, a very personal approach ... Flowers for Bea
The images in Flowers for Bea were made during the spring and summer of 2020. Each day during the lockdowns put in place during the Covid pandemic, Brendan Barry would go for a walk in his neighborhood, picking wildflowers, bringing them home and arranging them into still lifes to be photographed with a camera obscura and darkroom he had constructed out of a garden shed. He created the images using two analogue processes, one with a paper negative, the other produced using a complex colour-reversal process.

Grant Castner
In July 2019, staff of the New Jersey State Museum visited a cramped and dusty storage locker in Hunterdon County. Inside was a treasure trove of more than one thousand glass plate negatives. Each negative preserved an image of New Jersey at the turn of the 20th century. They once belonged to a Trenton resident who had used the plates as tools for his chosen art form. His name was Grant Castner. His art was photography. Castner's glass plate negatives are a visual record of New Jersey's social and cultural history. His many human subjects are rich and poor, young and old, Black and white. They are at work, at play, at home, and in the community. Castner also documented social change brought about by electricity, engineering, education, industry, and transportation. He captured the excitement of public amusements such as parades and fairs. He recorded the aftermath of floods, fires and other disasters. Castner also had a fondness for the outdoors. He used his camera to reflect on the beauty and tranquility that he found in the natural landscapes of New Jersey. This book presents the collective work of Grant Castner, an amateur artist whose place in New Jersey history was, until now, completely unknown. His photographic negatives forever preserve pinpoint moments in the past. They are time machines to another era.
