Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center
A celebration of this luminous jewel of a church, which serves as a memorial to all those who tragically lost their lives on 9/11 and provides a place of quiet reflection open to all. The original Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1892 and sat at the foot of the World Trade Center in New York City. Tragically, the church was completely destroyed in the collapse of Tower Two during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Determined to rebuild, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese selected world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava to re-create the church near the original site. Using marble from the same quarries as the Parthenon, Calatrava developed his plan from a wealth of Byzantine precedents for the church's structure, including the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The Shrine's iconographic program was created by Bishop Joachim of Amissos (John A. Cotsonis) and brought to realization by the celebrated iconographer Father Loukas of the Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos. It is the only church in the United States whose complete iconography is painted by an Athonite monk. The Architecture of Wesley Clark Dodson
Raised the son of a Methodist circuit-riding minister, Wesley Clark Dodson had just begun establishing himself as a civic-minded architect in Alabama when the outbreak of the Civil War dramatically altered his life. He fought with the 40th Alabama Infantry Regiment and emerged from the war disabled. In 1866, unable to find work as an architect in his home state, he was determined to begin again in Texas. Starting over would prove far from simple. Postwar Texas had a depressed economy, and the conflicts of Reconstruction plagued the state. Dodson lost his beloved wife, Sarah, to illness during a severe winter. Nevertheless, he persevered, gradually building a career designing courthouses, jails, churches, and schools; institutions he saw as necessary to create a good, strong society in Texas. Eleven of Dodson's public buildings are still in use today and nine of Dodson's buildings in Texas, including the First Presbyterian Church in Palestine and the courthouses of Parker, Hill, and Lampasas Counties, are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Architecture of Wesley Clark Dodson reveals how Dodson transitioned from being a pre-Civil War master builder to a late nineteenth century professional architect with a membership in the prestigious American Institute of Architects; details the important role he played in elevating architecture to the status of a licensed profession; and provides insights into the process of building these public institutions and the difficulties encountered. This third volume in the monograph series of work by Jones, Partners: Architecture picks up where the previous volume El Segundo left off. After 10 years in El Segundo the office has relocated near Sciarc in the arts district of DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) where Jones is teaching and many of the team members have matriculated or are studying.Alameda covers all the work done in this location between 2007 and 2013, in 330 densely packed (but artfully designed, by the Afton Klein Design group) pages, including "words, buildings, machines," as well as projects, competitions, furniture and over forty pages of the firm's signature graphic production in convenient tear-out sheets of posters, competition boards and other client presentation material. As the title suggests, the spirit of the work continues to be Boss, but this volume also records a new and ongoing exploration of what Jones terms "hard modernism," which is to architecture what hard cider is to apple juice. This work sees itself as continuing the evolution of the machines for living as mechanisms for contemporary meaning. This third volume in the monograph series of work by Jones, Partners: Architecture continues the coverage of the firms "words, buildings, machines," in the same signature graphic form that made the previous two volumes inspirational collector's items.
