Risoluto
(Southern Music Band). Risoluto is a music term of Italian derivation, first appearing in the mid 1700s. A great many musical terms such as this are in Italian, because many of the important composers from the Renaissance to the Baroque were from the geographic area known today as Italy and spoke some form of Italian. Consequently, performance markings in their published music, widely disseminated through the rest of Europe, were in the language that they best understood. Music marked in this manner is to be played firmly and decisively with firm resolve and little variance from the marked tempo. It can be seen that while there are several stylistic changes in this piece, the tempo varies not a bit, holding firm at Allegro vivo, quarter note at 120, from first measure to last.
Dueling Carmens: Two Carmen Fantasies by Hubay and Sarasate
(LKM Music). "Georges Bizet's opera Carmen had its first performance in Paris in 1875. In the audience was the 17-year-old Hungarian violin virtuoso and budding composer Jeno Hubay. After the performance Hubay started writing his Carmen Fantasy from memory. The following season for his debut recital in Paris, he included his newly created composition. It is a lyrical work of great beauty and brilliance. Hubay combined his career of a concertizing virtuoso, composer and violin pedagogue. At the Royal Conservatory in Brussels he became the successor of Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski. Later, Franz Liszt invited Hubay to lead the violin department in the newly created Budapest Music Academy. He created the world-renowned Hungarian school of violin playing. His student, Franz von Vecsey, recorded the Carmen Fantasy in 1904 at age 11! His other students included Joseph Szigeti, Zoltan Szekely, Sandor Vegh, Endre Gertler, Gyorgy Garay and many more. Hubay was a very active composer, creating over 120 works including operas, ballets, concertos, songs and instrumental compositions. Pablo de Sarasate wrote his Carmen Fantasy in 1882. It is a composition of drama and passion, written with his unparalleled brilliance for violin writing. This work has remained in the standard repertory, on programs of virtuoso soloists, as well as a required work for major competitions."
Ennanga
(Southern Music Strings). One of America's foremost composers, William Grant Still (1895-1978) had the distinction of becoming a legend in his own lifetime. From a musical family, he studied at Wilberforce University, Oberlin Conservatory, and the New England Conservatory. Mentors included George Chadwick, Edgard Varese and Howard Hanson. During his education, he also entered the world of commercial music, playing in orchestras and orchestrating, working in particular with the violin, violoncello and oboe. His employers included W.C. Handy, Don Voorhees, Sophie Tucker, Paul Whiteman, Willard Robison and Artie Shaw. He also arranged for and conducted the "Deep River Hour" over CBS and WOR. Dr. Still's service to the cause of brotherhood is evidenced by his many firsts for African-Americans in the musical realm: to have a symphony performed by a major U.S. symphony orchestra, to conduct a major symphony orchestra in the U.S. (1936, Los Angeles Philharmonic), to conduct a major symphony orchestra in the Deep South (1955, New Orleans Philharmonic), to conduct a white radio orchestra in New York City, to have an opera produced by a major company in the U.S., and to have an opera televised over a national network. With these "firsts" he was a pioneer, but in a large sene, he pioneered because he was able to create music capable of interesting the greatest conductors of the day: truly serious music, but with a definite American flavor. Versions of "Ennanga" for string orchestra and string quartet are available from the publisher.

He was a well-known composer in many other fields, such as opera, symphonic repertoire, concertante works in addition to music for films. In the summer of 1927, at 35 years ofage, he completed his Opus 100. All of the composer's stylistic qualities (contrapuntal lines, polytonality and polyrhythm) can be found here. However, the style that emerges here is a brutal and uncompromising one, designed to highlight all of the soloist;s bravura and virtuosity.

(Editions Durand). At the end of 1922, Darius Milhaud (1892 1974) had a dozen chamber works to his name, but that year was particularly productive.
