Rock & Soul
When I was young, I wanted to be Jimmy Page. That job was already taken, so I learned how to work a camera and photographed Jimmy Page instead. Before Barry Morgenstein ever clicked a camera shutter, he was shredding guitar solos in his high school garage band, chasing the same rush that electrified his musical idols. He had no idea that he would one day cruise through New York City in Tina Turner's limousine or hand Elton John a bouquet of balloons in the middle of Madison Square Garden. After two years learning under famed rock photographer Mark Weiss's wing, Barry struck out on his own, armed with grit, passion, and an uncanny ability to freeze raw emotions into a single frame. From the smoky corners of L'Amour to the thunderous roar of Giants Stadium, Barry poured his blood, sweat, and soul into capturing the faces that defined 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s music culture--including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Steven Tyler, and legends like Chuck Berry--in moments both fabled and intimate.Rock & Soul: Portraits by Barry Morgenstein is a visceral, visual collection of some of the best work throughout Barry's career. This isn't just a coffee table book--it's a backstage pass, a time machine, and lightning strikes on paper. Each image tells an unfiltered story, immortalized by someone who didn't just shoot the scene--he lived it.Turn the pages. Feel the flashbulb fire. Experience the soul of rock 'n' roll, locked in the lens for all time.
The Cure
The story of The Cure: a tall tale of a truly unique British band. The Cure's story is a fantastical pop fable, but their trajectory has not been one of unbroken success. A Perfect Dream is the tall tale of a truly unique British band. It's the story of The Cure. This fully updated edition includes a deep dive into the band's long-awaited 14th studio album released in 2024: Songs of a Lost World.

Picturing Prince: An Intimate Portrait
Featuring a mix of never-seen-before and rare photographs of Prince, alongside written vignettes about working at Paisley Park with the icon, Steve Parke's book is essential for Prince fans PICTURING PRINCE sees the late icon's former art director, STEVE PARKE, revealing stunning intimate photographs of the singer from his time working at Paisley Park. At least half of the images in the book are exclusively published here for the first time; most other images in the book are rare to the public eye. Alongside these remarkable images are fifty engaging, poignant and often funny written vignettes by Parke, which reveal the very human man behind the reclusive superstar: from shooting hoops to renting out movie theatres at 4am; from midnight requests for camels to meaningful conversations that shed light on Prince as a man and artist. STEVE PARKE started working with Prince in 1988, after a mutual friend showed Prince some of Steve's photorealistic paintings. He designed everything from album covers and merchandise to sets for Prince's tours and videos. Somewhere in all of this, he became Paisley Park's official art director. He began photographing Prince at the request of the star himself and continued to do so for the next several years. The images in this book are the arresting result of this collaboration.
The Silver Snarling Trumpet
The legendary lost manuscript of Grateful Dead co founder and primary lyricist Robert Hunter, written in the early 1960s--a wry, richly observed, and enlightening remembrance of "the scene" in Palo Alto that gave rise to an incredible partnership of Hunter and Jerry Garcia. "Strange to think back on those days when it was perfectly natural that we all slept on the floor in one small room ... These were the days before practical considerations, matters of 'importance, ' began to eat our minds. We were all poets and philosophers then, until we began to wonder why we had so few concrete worries and went out to look for some." So wrote Robert Hunter in The Silver Snarling Trumpet, both a novelistic singular work of art and the missing piece of the Grateful Dead origin story. In these pages, readers are privy to the early days of Hunter, Garcia, and their cohorts, who sit at coffee shops passing around a single cup of bottomless coffee because they lacked the funds for more than one. Follow these truth-seeking souls into the stacks at Kepler's Books, renting instruments at Swain's House of Music, and through the countryside on mind-expanding road trips. Witness impromptu jams, inspired intellectual pranks, and a dialogue that is, by turns, amusing and brilliant and outrageous. Hunter shares his impressions of his first gig with Garcia for a college audience, along with descriptions of his most intense dreams and psychedelic explorations. All of it, enlivened by Hunter's visionary spirit and profound ideas about creativity and collaboration. The lost manuscript is augmented with a Foreword by John Mayer, an Introduction by Dennis McNally, and an Afterword by Brigid Meier, who was part of their scene in the San Francisco Bay Area that served as a bridge from the beatniks to the hippies. Also included is Hunter's own 1982 assessment of his work--about how he shared it with close confidants but then decided to leave it unpublished. Five years after Hunter's death, the text has been found, so readers and fans of Hunter's indelible poetry and song can explore the origin of his genius and his craft. "An essential document in the Deadhead library." --Kirkus "Deadheads will drink this in." --Publishers Weekly
Touch of Grey, or How the Grateful Dead Became Pop Stars
Touch of Grey, or How the Grateful Dead Became Pop Stars tells the story of how one song transformed the popular legacy of one of rock's most iconic musical groups. John Brackett traces the history of the song "Touch of Grey," beginning with songwriter Robert Hunter's lyrical sketches and the Grateful Dead's earliest live arrangements, culminating in the group's popular renaissance following the release of "Touch of Grey" and the album In the Dark in the summer of 1987. Brackett details how particular recording technologies, notable musical characteristics, modes of attending and listening, and the mechanics of the contemporary music industry shaped this defining moment in the group's career. Drawing on extensive archival research, Touch of Grey examines how the band and their label worked to produce a hit record, a dynamic music video, and an effective promotional campaign that would propel the Grateful Dead from a group with a devoted cult following to become a pop culture phenomenon.

Tommy Bolin - In and Out of Deep Purple
It started off so well. As Jon Lord enthused in the October 1975 issue of Melody Maker: 'Tommy can't be so bad for us with so many good ideas. All I can say is when you hear the album (Come Taste The Band) you'll change your mind. Whether you like the music or not, you'll have to realise that Deep Purple now have an excitement in their playing that they haven't had in a long time...'. Despite calls of 'we want Blackmore' when Deep Purple Mark four played live, there was so much more to American guitarist Tommy Bolin than being Ritchie Blackmore's replacement. As a result, the purpose of this long-overdue biography is to readdress the existing narrative of Tommy Bolin's legacy. As well as discussing objectively Tommy's time with Deep Purple, Laura Shenton offers an insight into his musical achievements in his own right outside of the band, which include two cult rock albums in Teaser and Private Eyes. He also had a stint in The James Gang and make numerous guest appearances, where his versatile and virtuosic skills as a guitarist were utilised, before his untimely death in 1976 at the shockingly young age of 25.

The Cars
New York Times bestselling author Bill Janovitz delivers "the definitive story of The Cars" (Rolling Stone), one of the most popular, beloved, and influential bands to emerge from New Wave--with a foreword by Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes. The Cars formed in the late 1970s as an alliance of five journeymen musicians with roots in Maryland, Ohio, New York, and New England. They had each performed in a series of bands before finding one another--along with the right sound at the right time. That sound, soon fortified by their iconic imagery, turned them into Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Biographer, critic, and musician Bill Janovitz explores the musical, cultural, and commercial impact of the band with articulate and knowing insights. He draws on his own exclusive new reporting along with the enthusiastic participation of the surviving members of the band, as well as nearly everyone who surrounded them over the years. The band's unusual providence is fully explored here for the first time, and each of their landmark albums is masterfully chronicled and dissected, as is their profound support of the Boston music scene that has reverberated around the world and throughout the decades. Yet, with all of the success, there were also significant conflicts within the band, which led to an untimely end. Janovitz reveals the stories of each member, and of the group as a whole, with great care and understanding. To paraphrase The Car's own lyrics: Hello again, you might think this is just what you needed. It's magic. Let's shake it up and let the good times roll.
Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock 'n' Roll Group

Rather, the writer, online talk show host and, most important, singer in a series of breathtaking rock 'n' roll bands (the Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, Chain & the Gang), is drawing a line in the sand and doing so with what he hopes will finally define the undefinable." --Los Angeles Times IAN SVENONIUS'S EXPERIENCE AS AN ICONIC UNDERGROUND ROCK MUSICIAN--playing in such highly influential and revolutionary outfits as the Make-Up and Nation of Ulysses--gives him special insight on techniques for not only starting but also surviving a rock 'n' roll group. Winterberg: I. Streichquartett Symphony for String Quartet Study Score
(Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Books). 1936 was Hans Winterberg's most fruitful creative year before the catastrophe that befell Czechoslovakia with the annexation of the Sudeten territories in 1938 and the "rest of Czechoslovakia" in 1939 by Nazi Germany. Winterberg lived as a freelance composer in Prague, had found his own style after studying with Alexander von Zemlinsky, among others, and ventured into the great forms of the tradition for the first time: piano sonata, symphony and string quartet. Winterberg's First String Quartet, whose manuscript survived the turmoil of the war and was not premiered until 2024, "a masterpiece not only of Czech music but of the entire string quartet repertoire of the 20th century" (Michael Haas), is perhaps his most complex, most demanding work from the pre-war period. In terms of the interpretational challenges and the peculiarities of its stylistic approach, it lies at the interface between the quartets of Janacek and his pupil Pavel Haas and the quartet compositions of the protagonists of the Second Viennese School.
Hip-Hop Rivalries
"... the author details how various hip-hop feuds began and ended and analyzes the lyrics of the dis tracks that resulted from them." - Library JournalIt was the best of times, it was the worst of times. In A Tale of Two Cities, the duality of changing times was poignantly highlighted and almost the same thing is true in Hip-Hop Rivalries: East Coast Versus West Coast. As music in the general arts and people in general society have changed over the decades, politics has reflected these changes, sometimes for the best but often for the worst.Hip-hop was fulgurant with promise, a machine steadily gaining influence worldwide, a newly birthed political powerhouse. With its aggrandisement also came the inflation of egos until suddenly, everyone wanted to be the King of Hip-Hop, the King of Rap, or the King of New York - all of which were interchangeable terms. Those of us who grew up in times when lyrical witticisms had to be cultrate in order to be truly appreciated were galvanised back into life by the rivalry between Kendrick Lamar and Drake - which served as proof that hip-hop had graduated from simply rhyming rapping into a multiverse of praiseworthy diction, the stunning displays of lyrical thespians who amaze us with ever-evolving presentations full of entertainment, and battle rappers who boast a mighty grasp of nuanced literary contraptions. There is evidence of this growth in the haymaker equivokes tacitly enunciated in their performances, and never more so than during "beef" those times of dissent, discontent, or malcontent among classic rap groups, or between individuals. From Nas and Jay-Z to Drake and Pusha T, we will delve into the origins of hip-hop, its past and current artists, and the methods they employed in their rivalries that brought excitement and appreciation of this genre of music to followers worldwide.Join us on this informative, amusing, and nostalgic tour as we explore the greatest moments in hip-hop and battle rap that helped to put certain superstars on pedestals and thrones, while others were humiliated and became objects of scorn, clownery, or abject ridicule to this very day.

The Rolling Stones. 45th Ed.
The kind of fame and success The Rolling Stones have achieved in their 60-plus year career is without parallel; their most famous riffs and catchiest lyrics are indelibly engraved in our collective memory. With their mesmerizing on- and off-stage presence, the Stones set the standard for how a rock band should sound, pose, pout, and behave. They were the first to instinctively understand that what you looked like was as important as the music, and that photography had a vital role in promoting that image."The clothes and the hair are always impeccable," describes author Lucy Sante. "They were playing themselves, but with such consistent finesse you knew they were instinctively aware of the camera and how good they will look in the photos." Unsurprisingly many of the greatest photographers in the history of the medium wanted to take their picture.Produced in close collaboration with the band, this edition charts the Stones' remarkable history and outrageously cool lifestyle in over 500 pages of photographs and illustrations, gathered from archives all over the world. Unprecedented access to the Rolling Stones' own archives in New York and London adds an equally extraordinary, more private side to their story. For Mick, Keith, Charlie, and Ronnie this is and was their official photographic record.Features: Over 500 pages of incredible images from some of the world's greatest photographers, including David Bailey, Annie Leibovitz, Cecil Beaton, Anton Corbijn, Herb Ritts, Albert Watson, Andy Warhol, David LaChapelle, Peter Beard, Helmut Newton, Bent Rej, Gered Mankowitz, and Norman Parkinson.Essays from award-winning writers David Dalton, Waldemar Januszczak, and Lucy Sante.Appendix including a Stones timeline and a discography.

Mothership Connected
An oral history with the women of Parliament-Funkadelic, from forming the band to landing the mothership. Parliament-Funkadelic is perhaps the greatest funk band ever assembled. Yet at the time of the group's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, none of the women who helped create the sound and performed in P-Funk were invited to the ceremony and their contributions have been largely overlooked. Mothership Connected tells the story of Mallia Franklin, Lynn Mabry, Dawn Silva, Debbie Wright, and Shirley Hayden, all of whom were instrumental in making Parliament-Funkadelic, as well as the spin-off groups Parlet and the Brides of Funkenstein, into the legends they are today. Assembled by Seth Neblett, son of the "Queen of Funk" Mallia Franklin, and filled with the voices of funk icons like George Clinton, Sly Stone, Bootsy Collins, and the women themselves, this oral history makes clear why these "architects" at the "core" of P-Funk were both essential--and erased. From Franklin introducing Bootsy Collins to Clinton, to the Brides' top-10 hit "Disco to Go," to the drugs that helped destroy the group, this book reveals the hidden lives and uncomfortable truths of life in P-Funk. More than sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Mothership Connected is about Black women navigating a tumultuous era and industry to become musical pioneers. Now, after decades in the shadows, these genre-defining women are finally telling their story.

Jane's Addiction - Shockingly Habitual
Jane's Addiction: SHOCKINGLY HABITUAL, is detailed, deep look at the history of rebellion and redemption. An ntimate and unflinching portrait of one of the most influential and groundbreaking bands to emerge from the 1980s Los Angeles underground. Chronicling their meteoric rise, turbulent years, and enduring legacy, this book captures the spirit of a band that defied convention and reshaped the sound of alternative rock. From the raw energy of their independent debut album, Jane's Addiction (Triple X), to the seismic cultural shift ushered in by Nothing's Shocking and the genre-defying masterpiece Ritual de lo Habitual, the story of Jane's Addiction is a tale of visionary artistry, uncompromising creativity, and chaotic self-destruction. Tracks like "Jane Says," "Mountain Song," and "Stop!" became anthems for a generation, blending punk, metal, funk, and psychedelia into a sound that couldn't be categorized.Led by the enigmatic Perry Farrell-an artist, provocateur, and the mind behind Lollapalooza-the band grappled with addiction, fame, and the limits of their own ambition. Dave Navarro's haunting guitar work, Eric Avery's thunderous bass lines, and Stephen Perkins' explosive drumming created a chemistry as volatile as it was transcendent. Yet their groundbreaking music often stood in stark contrast to the chaos behind the scenes: grueling tours, personal conflicts, and struggles with substance abuse that nearly derailed everything. This book delves into their beginnings in the gritty clubs of Los Angeles, their artistic peak with Nothing's Shocking, and the creative clashes that led to their first breakup at the height of their powers. It explores Farrell's vision of music as a communal, spiritual experience, Navarro's fight for self-expression amidst addiction, and Avery's deeply introspective role as the band's sonic architect. The story doesn't end with their disbandment; it follows their evolution through reunions, side projects like Porno for Pyros and Deconstruction, and their triumphant return with Strays and The Great Escape Artist.Through meticulous research and fictionalized dialogue, Jane's Addiction: A History of Rebellion and Redemption offers an honest look at the band's artistic and personal struggles, their cultural impact, and their enduring influence on the alternative music landscape. It's a testament to the power of art to challenge, inspire, and endure-a love letter to a band that broke all the rules and changed the game forever. This book isn't just about the music; it's about the people, the art, and the chaos that made Jane's Addiction a legend.
