44 Duos for Two Flutes
(Boosey & Hawkes Chamber Music). Bela Bartok's "44 Duos" for violins are a set of marvelous musical miniatures that draw on the composer s love of Eastern European folk music. Ranging from easy to advanced standard, they have long been the province only of string players with arrangements first for cellos and more latterly for violas. Now they are available to delight flautists and will be ideal for recitals, either as a main program item or as encores, just as violinists have enjoyed them since their composition. Arranger Fereshteh Rahbari comments that it is thanks to the development of the flute over the last four decades, especially in its speaking quality, that these effective new arrangements could be made.
Kats-Chernin: Peggy's Minute Rag for Piano Trio
(Boosey & Hawkes Chamber Music). Elena Kats-Chernin composed this piece in its original form for solo piano in 1996 when staying on a scholarship at the former home of the Australian composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks (1912 - 1990), as a tribute to the well-known colleague. Kats-Chernin later arranged Peggy's Minute Rag for bassoon or clarinet or violin with piano, solo clarinet, violin duo as well as string trio. The version for piano trio was written in 2012 for the Streeton Trio, which also recorded the snappy ragtime number on CD.
Kats-Chernin: Naive Waltz for String Quartet Score and Parts
(Boosey & Hawkes Chamber Music). 'I wrote Naive Waltz in the early 90s for a dance piece called "Zeche 2" in Bochum, Germany. It was one of a few waltzes in that production and the only one to survive the passing of time, ' says Elena Kats-Chernin. Shortly afterwards, the composer herself arranged the original piano solo version for string quartet; this is the form in which the musically restrained piece is included onthe Acacia Quartet's complete recording of her music for this instrumentation.
Offenbach, Ed. Keck: La Jeunesse de Berlin - Suite of 3 Waltzes for Piano
(BH Piano). Offenbach, who came to Paris at the age of 14, gave concerts as a cello virtuoso and composed for salons and dance halls before achieving world fame as the inventor of the "Offenbachiade". However, writing waltzes, mazurkas and polkas not only provided him with a good technical basis, it was also a perfect vehicle for making a name for himself in the Parisian music world. La Jeunesse de Berlin is one of the first waltz suites that Offenbach composed for one of the legendary Parisian entertainment establishments, the "Turkish Garden". It was only published in a very small edition. Neither biographers nor catalogs mention the charming work. Until the French researcher and collector Jerome Collomb found a copy of the first edition for piano and thus made this new publication possible.
Winterbger: Suite for Violin and Piano

Hans Winterberg's extraordinary life was written in two chapters, one Czech and one German, split right down the middle by the experience of the Shoah, which Winterberg, unlike his colleagues Ullmann, Krasa, Haas and Klein, miraculously survived. In 1947, the Prague-born composer moved to Munich, where he worked for the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Haba, he belongs both to the Czech tradition following Janacek and to the circle of the Second Viennese School. He saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern culture. The circumstances under which Winterberg was able to compose during the war years are still unclear. Although his "mixed marriage" initially saved him from deportation, he had to perform forced labour and was eventually sent to the Terezin ghetto in January 1945. The Suite for Violin and Piano was composed in 1942, the year in which both Winterberg's mother and his piano professor Therese Wallerstein were murdered by the Nazis. Compared to the violin sonata from 1936, the Suite is much more condensed, lasting less than seven minutes. A melody dominated by chromatic turns and expressionist harmony lend the work its melancholy character, which gives way, however, to an almost irrepressible defiance in the rhythmically percussive last movement.
Winterberg: IV. Streichquartett String Quartet Study Score
(Boosey & Hawkes Scores/Books). Hans Winterberg's four string quartets were composed over a period of four decades between 1936 and 1961 and reflect the four stages of his eventful biography. He composed the first in what were probably the happiest moments of his life in his native city of Prague, the second under great hardship in the terrible war year of 1942, the third in 1957 during a phase of great compositional success in his adopted home of Munich, and the fourth in another dramatic phase of his life. It came at a moment of renewed doubt and uncertainty, when a young generation of composers in Europe was vehemently asserting itself, breaking with all traditions because it considered them obsolete and corrupted by fascism. Winterberg, a survivor of the Shoah, did not break with the past, but rather tried to continue the Czech-German-Jewish cultural symbiosis in his compositions after the war. The fourth quartet marks the beginning of a new creative phase in which he succeeded in combining the very different influences that shaped him - the Bohemian-Moravian, folk-inspired tradition as a successor of Janacek and the achievements of the Second Viennese School, imparted byhis teacher Alexander Zemlinsky - into a homogeneous, rhythmically pointed and expressive style.

Seven Angels for 2 Trumpets in C, Percussion, Harp, Cello, and Piano Accompaniment Score

A setting of passages from the Book of Revelation, with particular reference to the angels who appear with seven trumpet blasts, heralding a series of apocalyptic scenes. Commissioned by Jeffrey Skidmore, director of Ex Cathedra, and first performed by them at Birmingham Town Hall in 2015. The composer states, "There is a vividness and strangeness in these dramatic texts, which are endlessly fascinating and disturbing. The instruments used here are based on the various instrumental types mentioned throughout scripture - trumpets, harp, bells, cymbals, tabor, rebec." These are scored for mostly in their modern forms, but shofars (Jewish ritual temple trumpets) and early trumpets are also used. The choral writing shows a similar contrast between traditional and contemporary scoring, with polyphony and homophony alongside extended vocal techniques, including Sprechstimme. Leading choral director Paul Spicer comments, "This is an extremely dramatic work which draws the listener into the apocalyptic story line...The ending is cataclysmic."

In seven movements, the Australian composer Brett Dean explores the musical and poetic potential of the coded communication channels that are omnipresent, but all too often not perceived as language. The rhythm is the link between physical information channels and the sound scenes derived from them. Moving themes and symbols - including Morse signals from the sinking "Titanic" - are Dean's source of inspiration. The music develops with a variety of means, references to Robert Schumann such as advanced playingtechniques, a physically perceptible strength and harbors a quality close to the dance.

(BH Piano). What if the probably most popular symphony by Sergei Rachmaninoff were rewritten as a piece for piano and orchestra? This was the idea behind the 'adaptation' of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 into his Piano Concerto No. 5. All the while, the Russian pianist-composer Alexander Warenberg kept true to Rachmaninoff's style. However, the four movements of the symphony had to be adapted to the common three-movement form of the piano concerto by combining the second and third movements into one 'Adagio'. Warenberg's arrangement has meanwhile been performed many times. A recording with Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy (piano) is available on Brilliant Classics.
