Sacred Sounds, Secular Spaces
Military defeat, political and civil turmoil, and a growing unrest between Catholic traditionalists and increasingly secular Republicans formed the basis of a deep-seated identity crisis in Third Republic France. Beginning in the early 1880s, Republican politicians introduced increasinglysecularizing legislation to the parliamentary floor that included, but was not limited to, the secularization of the French educational system. As the divide between Church and State widened on the political stage, more and more composers began writing religious--even liturgical--music forperformance in decidedly secular venues, including popular cabaret theaters, prestigious opera houses, and international exhibitions. This trend coincided with Pope Leo XIII's Ralliement politics that encouraged conservative Catholics to rally with the Republican government. But the idea of amusical Ralliement has largely gone unquestioned by historians and musicologists alike. Sacred Sounds, Secular Spaces provides the first fundamental reconsideration of music's role in the relationship between the French state and the Catholic Church in the Third Republic. In doing so, the book dismantles the somewhat simplistic epistemological position that emphasizes a sharp divisionbetween the Church and the secular Republic during this period. Drawing on extensive archival research, critical reception studies, and musical analysis, author Jennifer Walker reveals how composers and critics from often opposing ideological factions undermined the secular/sacred binary throughcomposition and musical performance in an effort to craft a brand of Frenchness that was built on the dual foundations of secular Republicanism and the heritage of the French Catholic Church.

Josquin's Rome
In the late fifteenth century the newly built Sistine Chapel was home to a vigorous culture of musical composition and performance. Josquin des Prez stood at its center, singing and composing for the pope's private choir. Josquin's Rome offers a new reading of the composer's work in light ofthe repertory he and his fellow papal singers performed from the chapel's singers' box. Comprising the single largest surviving corpus of late fifteenth-century sacred music, these pieces served as a backdrop for elaborately choreographed liturgical ceremonies--a sonic analogue to the frescoes byBotticelli, Perugino, and their contemporaries that adorn the chapel's walls. Author Jesse Rodin uses a comparative approach to uncover this aesthetically and intellectually rich musical tradition. He confronts longstanding problems concerning the authenticity and chronology of Josquin's music whileoffering nuanced readings of scandalously understudied works by the composer's contemporaries. The book further contextualizes Josquin by locating intersections between his music and the wider soundscape of the Cappella Sistina. Central to Rodin's argument is the idea that these pieces lived inperformance. The author puts his interpretations into practice through a series of exquisite recordings by his ensemble, Cut Circle (available both on the companion website and as a CD from Musique en Wallonie). Josquin's Rome is an essential resource for musicologists, scholars of the ItalianRenaissance, and enthusiasts of early music.

Evangelical Worship
Say the words "evangelical worship" to anyone in the United States -- even if they are not particularly religious -- and a picture will likely spring to mind unbidden: a mass of white, middle-class worshippers with eyes closed, faces tilted upward, and hands raised to the sky. Yet despite the centrality of this image, many scholars have underestimated evangelical worship as little more than a manipulative effort to arouse devotional exhilaration. It is frequently dismissed as a reiteration of nineteenth-century revivalism or a derivative imitation of secular entertainment -- three Christian rock songs and a spiritual TED talk. But by failing to engage this worship seriously, we miss vital insights into a form of Protestantism that exerts widespread influence in the United States and around the world. Evangelical Worship offers a new way forward in the study of American evangelical Christianity. Weaving together insights from American religious history and liturgical studies, and drawing on extensive fieldwork in seven congregations, Melanie C. Ross brings contemporary evangelical worship to life. She argues that corporate worship is not a peripheral "extra" tacked on to a fully-formed spiritual, political, and cultural movement, but rather the crucible through which congregations forge, argue over, and enact their unique contributions to the American mosaic known as evangelicalism.
Music and Jewish Culture in Early Modern Italy
Musical culture in Jewish communities in early modern Italy was much more diverse than researchers originally thought. An interdisciplinary reassessment, Music and Jewish Culture in Early Modern Italy evaluates the social, cultural, political, economic, and religious circumstances that shaped this community, especially in light of the need to recognize individual experiences within minority populations. Contributors draw from rich materials, topics, and approaches as they explore the inherently diverse understandings of music in daily life, the many ways that Jewish communities conceived of music, and the reception of and responses to Jewish musical culture. Highlighting the multifaceted experience of music within Jewish communities, Music and Jewish Culture in Early Modern Italy sheds new light on the place of music in complex, previously misunderstood environments.

Studi Pergolesiani- Pergolesi Studies
For decades now, scholars of music theory have firmly established the supranational importance of the pedagogical tradition that flourished in the Neapolitan conservatories from the 17th to the 19th century. Beyond its potential in today's teaching practice, many questions remain open about the didactic tools peculiar to this tradition. As is well known, Neapolitan maestri did not produce theoretical treatises, but drafted short exercises such as partimenti and solfeggi to be realized extempore, which were at the core of their composition teaching. But what about the mechanisms of creation and transmission of these tools? And to what extent were Neapolitan methods imitated or adapted across Europe? This volume brings together contributions from an international conference (Milan - Bern, 2017) addressing these issues.
Music and Musicians in Renaissance Rome and Other Courts
First published in 1999, the essays that follow have been selected from the author's writings to explore musical institutions in 15th and 16th century Italy with a detailed focus on the papal choir, but with additional comments on Mantua (Mantova), Florence and France. Much of the material which formed the basis of those essays was largely drawn from archives. Richard Sherr explores diverse areas including the Medici coat of arms in a motet for Leo X, performance practice in the papal chapel during the 16th century, the publications of Guglielmo Gonzaga, Lorenzo de' Medici as a patron of music and homosexuality in late sixteenth-century Italy.

Music and Power at the Court of Louis XIII
What role did sacred music play in mediating Louis XIII's grip on power in the early seventeenth century? How can a study of music as 'sounding liturgy' contribute to the wider discourse on absolutism and 'the arts' in early modern France? Taking the scholarship of the so-called 'ceremonialists' as a point of departure, Peter Bennett engages with Weber's seminal formulation of power to consider the contexts in which liturgy, music and ceremonial legitimated the power of a king almost continuously engaged in religious conflict. Numerous musical settings show that David, the psalmist, musician, king and agent of the Holy Spirit, provided the most enduring model of kingship; but in the final decade of his life, as Louis dedicated the Kingdom to the Virgin Mary, the model of 'Christ the King' became even more potent - a model reflected in a flowering of musical publication and famous paintings by Vouet and Champaigne.

The author, a retired clinical psychologist, cantor and violinist, embraces a memoir as a way to share a treasury of short stories and vignettes that go beyond a lifetime of personal experiences, touching on broader universal values, spirituality, and psychology. Even a glimpse of what life was like growing up in Brooklyn and New York City eighty years ago can focus on what we have in common, while also celebrating our uniqueness and diversity. The pages include a varied and abundant sampling of life viewed through the writer's prism with true events that are amusing, touching, poignant, thoughtful, ironic and inspiring. My Tapestry Journey, Certainly Not an Accident!
Early aspirations of being an accomplished musician that I had held in my heart since childhood were not encouraged as academically attainable by those who would know. As a college freshman, I was told in no uncertain terms by the music faculty that I should just enjoy music as a hobby and reserve serious study for the gifted and talented. I was not at the advanced level required and should never have slipped through the cracks and been admitted that first semester. So why would I possibly persevere? It made no earthly sense! There came a point in my adult life when I suddenly realized that there were too many twists and turns, unrelated people, and life-changing events through the years to now be able to refer to them as "coincidences."This surprising and extraordinary series of life events is chronicled in My Tapestry Journey, as it eventually led to the culmination of a major dramatic musical regarding Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation-only possible and explainable through God's providence and amazing divine intervention.

Hanyang Kut
This volume, first published in 2002, presents a sophisticated analysis of the musical instruments, repertoires, musicians and ensembles, and symbolism of the ritual music of Shamans of Seoul, Korea. Placed firmly in a social and historical context, it shows that Shamanism, considered superstition by many today, is alive and well in Seoul in a rich tradition reaching back to the Chos繫n Dynasty (1392-1910), the capital of which was Hanyang (now Seoul). The instruments, dress and other accoutrements of courtly life from the Chos繫n Dynasty have been taken up, although transformed, in contemporary rituals among spirit-possessed Shamans. Through a comparison of Hanyang kut - the rituals of the Hanyang Shamans - and the ritual practice of Inner Asian Shamans, and through an analysis of the relations of spirit-possession music rituals to musok, the indigenous religion of Korea, Seo sheds light on the role of music, spiritual practice and culture in present-day Korea.

Popular music in the twenty-first century is increasingly divided into niche markets. How do fans, musicians, and music industry executives define their markets' boundaries? What happens when musicians cross those boundaries? What can Christian music teach us about commercial popular music? In God Rock, Inc., Andrew Mall considers the aesthetic, commercial, ethical, and social boundaries of Christian popular music, from the late 1960s, when it emerged, through the 2010s. Drawing on ethnographic research, historical archives, interviews with music industry executives, and critical analyses of recordings, concerts, and music festival performances, Mall explores the tensions that have shaped this evolving market and frames broader questions about commerce, ethics, resistance, and crossover in music that defines itself as outside the mainstream.
Songs of SonderlingCommissioning Jewish ?migr矇 Composers in Los Angeles, 1938-1945
Songs of Sonderling is the story of Jacob Sonderling's unique contributions to Jewish liturgical music. Rabbi Sonderling was many things: a descendant of Chassidic rebbes, a rationalist, a Reform rabbi, a Zionist, an army chaplain, a celebrated orator, an artistic soul. From his early career at the Hamburg Temple and German Army service in World War I, to his wandering years in the Eastern United States and founding of the Society for Jewish Culture-Fairfax Temple in Los Angeles, Sonderling cultivated a unique aesthetic vision of Judaism, a "five-sense appeal." Jonathan L. Friedmann and John F. Guest document and analyze Sonderling's experience and expression of Judaism through music. Rabbi Sonderling's vision yielded liturgical commissions from exiled Viennese Jewish composers who arrived in Los Angeles in the 1930s and 1940s. Through these musical settings, activities at the Fairfax Temple, and involvement with the Los Angeles campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Sonderling made an indelible mark on the city's Jewish community and the wider musical world. Songs of Sonderling focuses on the commissions Sonderling made from 1938 to 1945: Ernst Toch's Cantata of the Bitter Herbs, Arnold Schoenberg's Kol Nidre, Erich Wolfgang Korngold's A Passover Psalm and Prayer, and Eric Zeisl's Requiem Ebraico. Through musical analyses and an examination of Sonderling's career in Los Angeles, Friedmann and Guest contribute to the study of Jewish liturgical music, to Jewish history in the American West, to Jewish identity in the twentieth century, and to Jewish diaspora writ large.

Ecologies of Resonance in Christian Musicking
Ecologies of Resonance in Christian Musicking^ Rexplores a diverse range of Christian musical activity through the conceptual lens of resonance, a concept rooted in the physical, vibrational, and sonic realm that carries with it an expansive ability to simultaneously describe personal, social, and spiritual realities. In this book, Mark Porter proposes that attention to patterns of back-and-forth interaction that exist in and alongside sonic activity can help to understand the dynamics of religious musicking in new ways and, at the same time, can provide a means for bringing diverse traditions into conversation. The book focuses on different questions arising out of human experience in the moment of worship. What happens if we take the entry point of a human being experiencing certain patterns of (more than) sonic interaction with the world around them as a focus for exploration? What different ecologies of interaction can be encountered? What kinds of patterns can be traced through different Christian worshiping environments? And how do these operate across multiple dimensions of experience? Chapters covering ascetic sounding, noisy congregations, and Internet live-streaming, among others, serve to highlight the diverse ecologies of resonance that surround Christian musicking, suggesting the potential to develop new perspectives on devotional musical activity that focus not primarily on compositions or theological ideals but on changing patterns of interaction across multiple dimensions between individuals, spaces, communities, and God.

Verdi in Victorian London
"Now a byword for beauty, Verdi's operas were far from universally acclaimed when they reached London in the second half of the nineteenth century. Why did some critics react so harshly? Who were they and what biases and prejudices animated them? When did their antagonistic attitude change? And why did opera managers continue to produce Verdi's operas, in spite of their alleged worthlessness? Massimo Zicari's Verdi in Victorian London reconstructs the reception of Verdi's operas in London from 1844, when a first critical account was published in the pages of The Athenaeum, to 1901, when Verdi's death received extensive tribute in The Musical Times. In the 1840s, certain London journalists were positively hostile towards the most talked-about representative of Italian opera, only to change their tune in the years to come. The supercilious critic of The Athenaeum, Henry Fothergill Chorley, declared that Verdi's melodies were worn, hackneyed and meaningless, his harmonies and progressions crude, his orchestration noisy. The scribes of The Times, The Musical World, The Illustrated London News, and The Musical Times all contributed to the critical hubbub. Yet by the 1850s, Victorian critics, however grudging, could neither deny nor ignore the popularity of Verdi's operas. Over the final three decades of the nineteenth century, moreover, London's musical milieu underwent changes of great magnitude, shifting the manner in which Verdi was conceptualized and making room for the powerful influence of Wagner. Nostalgic commentators began to lament the sad state of the Land of Song, referring to the now departed ""palmy days of Italian opera."" Zicari charts this entire cultural constellation. Verdi in Victorian London is required reading for both academics and opera aficionados. Music specialists will value a historical reconstruction that stems from a large body of first-hand source material, while Verdi lovers and Italian opera addicts will enjoy vivid analysis free from technical jargon. For students, scholars and plain readers alike, this book is an illuminating addition to the study of music reception." Music. It brings zest to life. It can cheer the downhearted or add melancholy to an already sad day. It has the power to excite or to calm. We hear it in parades, in movies, in our car stereos and in our headsets. Music is such an integral part of life that it can change our mood - our heart rate - and even the structure of our brains. Through music we can feel transported to God's throne - but music may also be used to strengthen the works of darkness.Have you ever wondered about music's power? How is it that such an ethereal element can have such a profound effect on our lives? What if God meant music, not only to entertain us - but actually to help make us godly? Come along as we explore the effects of music on our minds, our bodies, and our souls.

Studies in Malaysian Oral and Musical Traditions
The first of two studies included is "Music in Kelantan, Malaysia and Some of Its Cultural Implications," by William P. Malm. Kelantan is the northernmost province on the east coast of Malaysia. It is considered to be the most orthodox area in a nation whose state religion is Islam. At the same time it must be noted that it borders to the north with the Buddhist country of Thailand and to the west is the Malaysian province of Perak whose jungles and mountains contain many "pagan" tribal traditions. Beyond Perak is Kedah with its larger Indian and Chinese populations and to the south is Trengganu where some Indonesian traits are still to be found. It is in this context that Malm's study of music is made. The second study is "Professional Malay Story-Telling: Some Questions of Style and Presentation" by Amin Sweeney. In view of the hitherto almost exclusive concern with the content of such tales as those of Sang Kanchil or Pak Pandir, Sweeney throws some light on the form, style, and presentation of oral Malay literature, with special reference to that class of story-telling popularly known as penglipur lara, or what Winstedt termed "folk romances."
The Music of Friends
Each summer, 350 musicians-amateur and professional, performers and composers-leave behind their day-to-day lives to gather for an intense week or more making music together. What makes this experience so compelling? The Music of Friends is a celebration of the history and ethos of this collective endeavor, formally known as the Chamber Music Conference and Composers' Forum of the East, Inc. The summer of 2020 would have marked the seventy-fifth annual conference and a move to the campus of Colgate University after decades at Bennington College, a double milestone that must now wait one more year.In celebration of the anniversary, author David Webber, a long-time conference participant, has combed the organization's archives and other historical material to present the story of an idea, the community it has created, and-crucially for this group's mission-its commitment to composers and new music.Webber documents the conference's development, and on occasion its survival against the odds, under different but always committed leaders, in a series of venues, and in changing times for music and society. With an introductory "Prelude: A Personal Perspective" by Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, The Music of Friends captures the spirit of conviviality, the dedication of the professionals and volunteers who stage the event every year, and the facets of the conference that will make it successful for years to come.
Foundations of Christian Music
In the study of Christian liturgical music, the first three centuries of the Christian era are foundational. Seldom, however, does this period receive serious attention from scholars. One of the reasons for this oversight is the fluid auditory environment of this period, and the inadequacy of the Western concept of ""music"" to describe this environment. Foundations of Christian Music addresses this lacuna by exploring the auditory environment of first-century CE Judaism and emerging Christianity until the time of Constantine (d. 337). Through a consideration of the text, styles, forms, performance, and settings of Jewish and early Christian worship, Foundations offers an unusually rich perspective on the lyrical nature of emerging Christian worship.
In God Alone
This contemplative, meditative Christian music is inspired by scriptures. The music was begun as a way to remember the scriptures but may lead one into a deeper and closer experience with the Lord. It can be sung or listened to during meditation or it can be sung by choirs or congregations. There are a variety of moods expressed in this music and many are written as prayers. The music is easy to play.At His FeetBlessed Are YeBlessed Be HeBlest Am ICalm My Heart, O LordFill Me With Your PresenceFruit of the SpiritHe Humbled HimselfHeal Me TodayHere Am IHis Grace Is All I NeedHoly SpiritI Am Alive TodayI Will Lift Mine EyesIn God AloneIn My Darkness, You Are My LightLead Me to the RockListen, ListenNarrow Is the WayNo Eye Has SeenOur Lord is Faithful"Seek My Face"This Beautiful WorldYou Are the Water of My Soul
